Slow Speeds using WRT54gs Router on Comcast

I have Very Slow speed the longer I use my Internet on Comcast, My system is Wired using Comcast Modem and Linksys WRT54GS Ver. 7.0. I also have A Xbox concected to to this network with one other PC on wireless. Please Help no one can tell me way

I have a similiar problem. The wired desktop has intermitten slow spots. I am not sure if this is due to a software firewall issue or what. Never had the problem before installing the router so I know it has something to do with the router.

  • Howto use WRT54G router to make satellite receiver LAN terminal wirelessly connectected?

    Hi,
I have a satellite receiver with Ethernet LAN port connection point. I also have wireless network in my house to connect my computers wirelessly to internet.
Is it possible to make this satellite receiver wirelessly connected to my wireless home network by using WRT54G router attached to it?
    If yes:
1)Which terminal of WRT54G router I must use for interconnection with satellite receiver ?
2)What I should do to configure WRT54G to achieve my goal, and how?
    Thanks,

Thank you very much for the first reply.
However let me simplify my question this way:
In order to make satellite receiver part of my wireless home network, is it possible to use WRT54G as wireless adapter by connecting it with an Ethernet cable to LAN terminal (which has Ethernet connector) of the satellite receiver?
    If the answer yes:
WRT54G has 4 Ethernet connectors marked 1,2,3&4 for LAN and one marked as Internet for ADSL modem.
    1) To which connector of the WRT54G I must connect the cable end coming from satellite receiver LAN terminal?
    2) What should I do (step by step please) to configure WRT54G to achieve my goal?
    Thanks.

  • Why is my Wireless Network so painfuly slow ?!?!?!?! [Im using WRT54G Router]

I have a wireless network/internet connection setup in my house. I have Wireless G Linksys Router sending my 10mb Internet signal to my Laptop PC and G5 Mac, the internet works fine, great speeds on both pc and mac, however...
When i try and transfer files between my mac and pc on the wireless network its painfuly slow [it takes about 5 minutes to transfer a 60mb file]. However when i plug them in together using an ethernet cable the speeds are great and 50mb will transfer in a matter of seconds rather than minutes.
My problem is that having them connected via an ethernet cable is far from practical and i really want to be able to do fast transfers via the wireless network iv setup, this must be possible ?? this why i purchased this router after all !!
If anyone has any idea why the wireless network is so slow or how i could go about sorting it out then please let me know...I cant stress how much it would be apreciated !
Some Relevant Info which might be handy in diagnosing the problem:
    - Im using a Linksys WRT54G Router with the latest firmware
    - My Internet goes from the modem into the Router downstairs which then sends the wireless signal to my pc and mac upstairs
    - Wireless Reciever [airpot extreme card] on mac is wireless G
    - Wireless Reciever [Intel Pro Wireless] on pc is wireless B
    - Transfering from mac to pc or pc to mac makes no difference to speed, its extremley slow for each.
    - Im the only person using the network
    - Im running the latest version of Windows XP and OSX Tiger
    - The Signal Strength when recieving the Internet is Excellent
    - Iv tried disabling any firewalls within the network [on the router/pc] and it makes no difference
PLEASE HELP !!!Message Edited by Altair on 10-08-200608:34 PM

Part of the problem is your wireless B.  This will limit any file transfers to a maximum of 11 Mbps = about 1.1 M byte per second, after allowing for system overhead bits.
Therefore the minimum possible transmission time for a 60 M byte file, through a wireless B, would be about a minute.
Your wired connection runs at 100 Mbps, so the same file would take only about 6 seconds.
This may explain part of your problem.  This is part of the reason your system is taking much more than 6 seconds.  However, I do not know why your system is taking 5 minutes instead of 1 minute.

  • How do I share internet using WRT54G router?

I have a computer that is connected to the internet, and it has 2 Ethernet ports. I'm using 1 of them to connect to the internet, and I want to use my WRT54G router to connect to the internet through the second Ethernet port, for my wireless devices. Is this possible? If so, how would I set it up. I have it plugged in right now, but it says limited or no connectivity on my computer, and it doesn't appear to be working on my wireless device.

It is something like this.  Unplug the Ethernet cable from the computer and plug it to the internet port of the router.  Now install another cable from port 1 in router to your ethernet  port in your computer.  Port 2 to second computer, etc.  You will need a wireless adapter on each computer if you want to go wireless.
Now, you have to configure your router.  Either use the CD or connect it manually.
Log on to router using 192.168.1.1 and use admin as password.  Leave username blank.
Click on Wireless.  Now change the SSID to something other than Linksys.  Ex. Yankee. Click on save.
Click on Wireless Security.  Change mode to WPA2 Personal.  Change Algorithms to TKPS+AES. Make up a passphrase (8 charactors or more) Click on Save.
Now go to computer with wireless adaptor and look for your wireless network (ex. Yankee Secured Network)  Click on it then connect.  It should ask you for the key.  Put the passphrase you set up in router.

  • Slow speeds using airport express 1st generation

I am currently using an airport express 802.11n 1st generation. I have a direct link from my modem to the airport express which provides a wireless connection to 4 other devices, my macbook pro (2009), iphone 5, android phone, and a windows computer.
I have been seeing very variable download speeds when using speedtest.net on both my macbook and iphone. I had just assumed it was my internet provider. However, I tried connecting my macbook directly to my modem using an ethernet cable instead of through the airport express. When I did that I had the full 50 Mb/sec download speed that I am paying for. When I then reconnect the airport express and measure the download speeds through wifi and with all 4 devices connected, I see much slower speeds, anywhere from 4 Mb/sec to 30 Mb/sec, but never the full 50 Mb/sec.
It seems that when my download speeds are really slow and I reset the airport express by just unplugging it and then plugging it back in, the speeds generally seem to improve, but again they usually average around 15 Mb/sec.
Another thing, it seems like the download speeds improve if only 2 devices are connected and not all 4. Yet, this seems unlikely, I would expect that the airport express could handle more than 4 devices!
When I connect with airport utility, the airport express has the latest firmware. I can't think of much else that would cause these slow speeds.
Any help would greatly be appreciated!
    Thanks.

It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference that appears during these hours that is preventing your 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) from providing a clean RF signal.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like iStumbler, or AirRadar to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible.

  • Slow speed with WRT54GS Wireless-G router

    I have install a WRT54GS wireless router.
Since then my download speed on my pc (the one directly connect with the router) has come down from 4mb to 1mb.
If I connect the modem directly to the pc I get 4mb but when i connect the wireless router between them it goes down to 1mb.
I have call tech support, upgrade to version 1.52.0 but nothing change.
I have try it without a firewall and get the same result
One thing I have notice, when I do a tweak test at http://www.dslreports.com my RWIN  without the router is 56000
If I connect the router is show 9800 even if my PC who as XP is set to 56000
    Thanks

Check for latest firmware and upgrade if necessary. Then do a factory reset.

  • Slow speed using written

I have a WRT160n ver 3. My computer is vista 64. I am using it wirelessly. I have been chatting with lincksys but so far no help. I was in New York CIty before this and using Time Warner for Cable modem. I think I had the same issue and when I called for support they adjusted the setting and it became very fast, download speeds in the 20's. I moved to Florida and now have comcast. I should be getting signals of 16 for downloads but when I use explorer I am lucky to get 10, if I use AOL it goes down to 6 which is a joke. I have the latest firmware loaded as I just did this with tech support but still no help. We switched the channel to 11 but all that did was make the connection keep falling out, so I have moved it back to 6. What can I do? Comcast says they are giving me the signal at the speed as promised and it is something wrong with the router.

I had my broadband provider here today to check everything for me. Seems that the issue is caused by which browser I am using. I normally use AOL and that is bar far the slowest. If we connected the modem directly to the computer I was getting the slowest speeds. If we then went through the router it slowed just a bit more. These speeds were half of what they were doing the same test with Firefox. Comcast confirmed that I was really getting signals in the 20's out of the modem hardwired. If I then went through the router they slowed just a bit but they were still strong. If we then tried through AOL then it was less then half. I didn't have this problem in New York City or I didn't notice it as much. I guess I just do not know enough about all this to be able to figure out how to fix this problem. I have not changed anything since I lived in New York and it seems that the speeds were the same but I didn't have as big of a drop off with AOL. If anyone knows what I could do or where I could look for help I would really like the help. I could pay more money and increase the speed but I just don't see the sense in that and it is very expensive. I guess I just have to use my AOL through firefox. It is a bit more of a pain but what else can I do?

  • Is anyone having issues with slow speeds using safari 8.0

my requests to some sites are left hanging and I have checked my internet speeds.

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them. In that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If not, do that now and see whether there's any change.
If your browser is Safari, then from the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    and confirm. Any change?
If you're running OS X 10.9 or later, select the Advanced tab in the Preferences window and uncheck the box marked
              Stop plug-ins to save power
    Any change?
Quit and relaunch the browser. Any change?
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Enable Private Browsing in the Safari menu. Any change?
Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same? What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
If other browsers and Internet applications are also affected, follow these instructions and test. Any change?
If Parental Controls is active for any user, please turn it off and test. Any change?
If only Safari is affected, launch the Activity Monitor application and enter "web" (without the quotes) in the search box. If a process named "Safari Web Content" is shown in red or is using more than about 5% of a CPU, select it and force it to quit by clicking the X or Quit Process button in the toolbar of the window. There may be more than one such process. Any improvement?
Open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the box marked Photos, if it's checked. Any change?
Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

  • Help! Extremely slow Internet speed using Linksys WRT54G router

I have an eMac running OS 10.3.9 and wired to a Linksys WRT54G router using ethernet cable. I have to use this router for my work PC. I'm also using WildBlue satellite internet. The problem is, I'm getting about 1.5 Mbps on my PC, but less than 33 Kbps on my eMac. It was running faster before using dial-up. I've called WildBlue and Linksys tech support, and they can't help. Can anyone help?
By the way, my son is using his iBook on the same router, only wireless, and he's happy with the speed he's getting compared to dial-up.
    Thanks,
    Eric

1400 kbps is a lot nicer than 33 kbps, isn't it? You can possiblly tweak it a little more --- I know I've seen a MTU of 1460 mentioned --- since you can also revert back to the 1400 MTU setting you found.
(Broadband Optimizer is in one sense a nice GUI to the terminal commnads you found and used.)
One more thing to be aware of, satellite internet is subject to longer latency times than cable or DSL, due to the unavoidable geometry of bouncing data packets off a satellite in orbit. That could be an issue if you ever want to play real-time online multiplayer adventure type games. It shouldn't be an issue for being able to grab OS updates in minutes instead of hours, through. Enjoy your broadband access!

  • My 1st Generation time capsule won't connect to the internet thru a new motorola sb6121 - get continuously flashing yellow light. Using a router in between the modem and capsule yields good but slower connection to internet. Any thoughts?

My 1st Generation time capsule won't connect to the internet thru a new motorola sb6121 - get continuously flashing yellow light. Using a router in between the modem and capsule yields good but slower connection to internet. Any thoughts?

    Thanks for your response
Let me give the history - I started with an Apple Express being fed thru a D-Link  EBTR 2310 cable Router from an RCA DCM315 Modem (Pure). Comcast service all the way.
Got the 1st generation TC in 2008 and merely replaced the Airport Express with the TC. Worked ok
A year or two ago I did try removing the modem and feeding the TC directly from the modem. Resulted in the same condition I have now - Continuous flashing amber on the TC. So I put the router back in the chain.
Some time later, at the recommendation of a Comcast rep, I replaced the router with (a Belkin F5D 5231) to see if speed and dropout problems would be improved. I thought it helped some at the time but now I am not so sure.
Last week I decided to see if a new modem would help with download speeds. So I got another pure cable modem (Motorola SB 6121- high on the Comcast recommended list).
Got up and running easily with Comcast help and with the modem connected directly to a computer.
Next I put the TC in the link and again could not get past the TC continuing to flash amber. Although I did get connected to the internet with this configuration I lost connection two both of my printers - one connected by USB and the other wirelessly to the TC. Again everything works fine when I put the Belkin router back in the system.
    However with the router in there, the modem shows the downstream connection to be 10/100 ethernet speed. (Modem light changes color for indicating speeds.}
I have gone thru all of the combinations of powering down/ up, but all stays the same.
I can live with what I have but something still doesn’t seem right.
    Thanks again

  • Slow VPN throughput speeds using WRT54GX4

I have a WRT54GX4 and am experiencing slow VPN throughput.
When I connect from my home network to my work network via my companies VPN client I've noticed that the throughput drops significantly.  Speed tests to DSL Reports are ~10500 kbit/s download and 950 kbit/s upload when going through the WRT54GX4 not using VPN, but only 250 kbit/s download and 95 kbit/s upload when I connect using my VPN client.
I have used the same laptop computer at various locations away from home and tested through my work VPN connection to DSL Reports and noted that the speeds don't change too much when I switch between direct and VPN.
Next I bypassed the WRT54GX4 router all together and connected directly to my cable modem at home and repeated the test.  This time the speed test using my VPN client was ~9950 kbit/s download and 850 kbit/s upload.
My company has several DS-3 connections that are load sharing and as mentioned above testing from other locations has shown that my office isn't the bottleneck.
    Everything points to the WRT54GX4.
Also, my previous router was an early Wireless-G Linksys router - forgot the model - and it did not slow down my VPN like this new one does.
The problem exists in either wired or wireless connection mode.
I recently upgraded with the latest firmware V 1.00.20 but that didn't help.
I have also tried various MTU sizes and auto but nope, no joy there.
By the way, we have both Cisco and Nortel VPN servers at work and I've tried each client on two separate host machines at home and both exhibit the same slow connection.
When I turn off the VPN client everything is great and my speeds are super.
    Any ideas?

    This may help significantly.
I have DSL, speed is 3 mb. I have a WRT54GS router. When I hardwired the connection from modem to laptop, speed was 3mb - ISP was doing it's job. Via wireless connection, speed dropped to 1 mb.
I spoke with Linksys and after some tweaks (upgrading Firmware etc ...) - they said that the drop was not unexpected and this is what I had to accept.
I spoke with my network specialist at work (I am in I.T. myself) and he thought that the router should not eat 2/3 of the speed. This was confirmed by the Geek Squad as well.
Combing through this forum, I came across an interesting article about some tweaks you can do with www.speedguide.net - they have an optimzing tool that has yielded the solution.
    Try this ...
    http://www.speedguide.net/files/TCPOptimizer.exe
This will download the tool. When you open this up you will see a number of tabs - the general tab yielded the most for me. You will see some radio buttons for current state and proposed state. When you choose apply you will see the registry settings that will be affected - a re-boot is necessary.
So after I did this, I noticed that my wireless speed was up to 2 mb - better but still only 2/3 of what I expected.
About an hour later I went to the basement, did a speedcheck ( www.speedtest.net ) - and I was getting 3 mb!! I went up to the kitchen and ... 3mb. I went to the access point and ... 3mb.
Bottom line: Re-boot helps - but it seems that there is some cycling involved ... so try a little later.

  • WRT54G always reseting and very slow speeds.

I don't know whats going on, I have a WRT54G router thats completely up to date with the firmware and the such. I am connected to it via Ethernet cable, and only use the wireless part for my videogame stuff, so its not just the wireless network thats messing up, its the hardwired that is losing connection. Every half hour or so the router loses its connection and I'll either have to just wait for it to reconnect or have to power down the router (and sometimes the modem, or restarting the whole computer) and power it back up for it to be able to connect again. I have tried completely reseting the routers settings and uninstalling the EasyLink Advisor and reinstalling that and reconfiguring the router but its still doing this. When I am able to connect, my internet speeds are very slow. I am used to getting 200-300k/sec but now I am getting maybe 80k/sec when downloading. Is it possibly my router thats just messed up? thanks in advance(also, when i finished typing this my internet shut down again, and I had to restart the computer multiple times and now im just plugged into the modem so i get a stable connection..) access the router's web interface and try changing the MTU size to 1400 / 1300 .. check whether this makes any difference..

  • Not seeing comcast speed bump possible router problem

I got a letter in the mail this week about the speed bump from 50 to 75 Mbps and to just power cycle equipment and done Ran a few speed tests and average  51 down /11 up I power cycled my modem and router and PC again and had the same results. I did some googling and did not find anything related to my problem. I found something about slower speeds over wireless and some settings to change, but I m going over the wire. I still made the changes to see if they would help, disablling (Home Network Defender) and noticed no change with that. I master reset my router and no change. I directly connect to the modem and ran a speed test and was seeing 83 down /11 up. So this has me thinking time to buy a new router. Current hardware setupModem:TM702GRouter: WRT610N V1

I should have been more clear on my first post. I did end up using that as troubleshooting method the same day I made the post. I removed the router from the mix and was seeing the bumped up speed  of 83 down and 12 up. So I unplugged the modem for 2 minutes no battery came with this modem since Comcast wanted extra for it which is lame, but I have Tripp Lite Smart 1500 lcdt. Plugged the modem back in and let it fully power up and finish booting up where all the green lights were solid, plugged up the router and waited a few minutes for it to wake up, then did a speed test and was back down to 51 down and 11 up.  So currently I'm just running a direct connection to the modem with no router.

  • Speed through WRT54G is very slow

    Hello ,
I am using  WRT54G linksys router. When connwcted through the router my download speed is very  slow(~700K). If i plug in the LAN calble directly to my laptop the speed is ~4M
I am using only filter by MAC address.
    Amy help will be appreciated.

That speed that you posted with the router was that with a wired connection or wireless? Post also the speed test results if your computer is connected wired to the router and as well as the wireless connection. Also check the network speed. What is the speed that you are getting with your wireless network connection (link speed)?
