Slow start and page load on 10.8.5?

I recently upgraded to 10.8.5 from 10.6.8. It now takes several tries to get the system to start, and page loading on the net seems slower. Is this normal?

No.
Do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then re-install the OS.

  • After upgrading to 8.0 the add-on compatability tool runs and the Getting Started web page loads every time the browser starts.

After upgrading to 8.0 from 7.0.1 every time I start FF I get the add-on compatibility tool to run and the Getting Started web page loads along with my homepage in separate tabs as well. So far I have tried running the installer again, disabling all add-0ns and custom settings and restarting and turning off automatic updates. Nothing worked there. I got the same behavior each time. I don't know what else to try other than a full uninstall and reinstall. Something I'd like to avoid if it's possible because of the time involved. This is the second time I have posted regarding this issue. The first time I didn't get a response. A solution or a possible workaround would be greatly appreciated if anyone knows of any. As a staff member and a global forum moderator for an anti-virus company I understand how hectic things can be at times but some feedback, good or bad, on this issue would be very welcomed! Regards, Ritchie...

Hi michaell, thanks for the reply. I tried everything in the Preferences are not saved link you provided and nothing worked there. If creating a new profile will delete all my add-ons and custom settings I might as well just do a complete uninstall and reinstall. That actually would be easier. That article told me how to save my bookmarks though so I don't have to loose those which is nice. I don't know if this makes any difference but there is a discrepancy between the preference file in the article which is: prefs.js and what's showing on my PC which is: prefs with no .js suffix. I tried to rename the file to prefs.js and restarted. No luck there either. It just created another prefs file. I guess we've pretty much exhausted all the avenues to try! I'm just going to go ahead and do a reinstall when I get the time. Thanks so much for your help michaell. I do appreciate the effort. Regards, Ritchie...

  • Slow FF startup and page load speed

TIP TO IMPROVE SPEED(?): My FF startup and page load speeds increased dramatically when I used the auto feature in Ashampoo WinOptimizer 6 to adjust my internet settings. I've been using the comparable feature in TuneUp Utilities 2009 and FF speed was worse than abysmal. Hope this helps some of you. (You can obtain a trial version from Ashampoo or CNET; actually v7 is out and appears to be even better.)
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == Always

Gmail only allowed to log into one message or link or folder then ff 3.6.4 freezes.
I have gone back to 5.2 to get it to work yet every time it updates ff freezes. Why is this?
If I reinstall 3.5.2 will I ba able to get an answer to this problem else I may not be able to see what you send me.

  • Flash audio starts on page load..don't want it

I have a flash photo slideshow with audio. The problem is
that the audio starts on page load and not on reaction to the play
b utton. Any help? auto play is set to off

I don't know much about working with flash. There is a stop
action on the first frame for the slideshow. Do I need to make one
for the sound too? How do I go about doing that?

  • Fired up my first Azure Website to host some virtual tours... ftp uploading and page loads super slow.

I upgraded my plan to BASIC... any idea why FTP upload are so slow?  When I go to my pages, they are loading slowly too.

    Hi,
First, please have a look at this article to see how to use FTP in azure:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/kaushal/archive/2014/08/02/microsoft-azure-web-site-connect-to-your-site-via-ftp-and-upload-download-files.aspx, based on your description, the pages loading slowly, this issue only occur in your first time to loading? If yes, I
think it is normal, If you mean the initial request takes long and then any subsequent requests are fast, then that would be because you are hitting .NET apps cold start. Many .NET apps are slow to JIT and load all their .NET requirements, but once everything
is loaded, they are fast. If I misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.

  • Boot and page load very slow after 2nd HD install

    Good morning.
I recently added a second slave HD (80 GB with a OS X partition) to my beige G3 MT. I am using the original 9 GB drive as the boot drive. Northing else was changed.
Since that time, the boot time has increased significantly (2-3X pre 2nd drive).
Also, page load times have been increased with the Norton AntiVirus symbol being displayed.
    1. What's causing the slow boot? Is the CPU looking at the new drive and applying Norton before the original boot drive?
    2. Are there settings in Norton that might help?
    3. Is it even worth continuing Norton use for this OS 9.1 machine?
    Thanks for your time!

Hi, Bruce. NAV is probably scanning the entire new drive at startup, thus accounting for the major startup slowdown. And no, there's no good reason to have NAV installed at all. Your Mac doesn't need antivirus protection.

  • My Firefox is impossible to use. It is very very slow to change pages, load pages and so one.

I already search and applied several suggestions found in Internet, but until now, no one solve the problem. Firefox is using much memory (600.000) and much CPU (100%) and work very slow to load new pages or update the pages loaded.
I am using APP "Memory Fox" but is the same.

hello VictorTrindade, please try to [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems|reset firefox]] and see if this can address the issue...
please also make sure that firefox isn't blocked by your security software/firewall in any way.

  • IMac 27 slow start and KPs

    Hi friends,
I've got a 27 inches iMac from January 2010. In last month i'm experiencing very slow starts in first white screen. The start takes about 2 or 3 minutes.
Then, in desktop, all is OK. I work very good with all programs and games. I'm not experiencing any problem with videocard, memory, hard-disk, or somthing.
Two or three times I try to Shut down the iMac, OSX put a screen making me to shut down holding down the bottom to start/stop for a few seconds and restarting the system. Then, the iMac show me this KP:

    Things I've done:
    - Try to repair users and disk permissions with Onyx.
    - Try to unplug all USB devices plugged in back USB (ex. AverTV or Printer)
    - I've updated the OSX to 10.6.7
    Things I suspect:
    - In desktop the mouse or keyboard doesn't work until I press some buttons. (Maybe Bluetooth problem?)
    - Two months ago I've got a problem with Espionage Software, making some folders invisibles with encryptation, deleting the app, reinstalling and some folders encryped maybe causing problems?
    - I can't restart with 'D' pressed for a Hardware Test (Maybe same Bluetooth problem?)
    - Maybe I may to move the RAM between sockets?
Could someone guide me for what can I do?
    Thanks!

  • Slow Internet and troubles loading

Hi guys and girls I was looking for a bit of help with my Internet connection.
I have Bt Infinity and everything was fine until around about the end of November. Now it is so slow in loading most (but not all) websites. It starts to load websites then it just stops, and I have to cancel it then reload it a few times to get it to load.
When I try to download files it only downloads a little bit then it stops, the only way I can download things is to keep redownloading it over and over until it finally finally finishes.
When I try to watch videos on youtube it Instantly buffers a section of the video then just stops. When I change the video quality either up or down it bufffers the next section instantly.
The Internet works perfectly on the wifi tho. Everything loads first time and very fast on my ipod and xbox but not so on the PC. I ran the Bt speed check and it came back with a downlaod speed of 35.2 mbps and a connection speed of 38.7 mbps.
If it helps I'm using a Desktop PC, running windows 7, I have made sure that all the windows updates are installed, Checked for viruses, Removed temp files. I am using firefox, the lastest version. I tried running it without add ons, I also tried using IE and Google Chrome and still it is so slow and hardly loads anything.
I am using Bt Home Hub 3 as was supplied by BT.
Like I said the Internet was fine til about 1 month ago and loaded everything fast first time. I never had any problems before with buffering videos.
Any help would be very nice as it is starting to get very annoying now.
    Cheers Kirk

  • X79A GD45 Slow start and slow boot into windows with SSD

Im having some major issues with my X79A GD45 board, When I start the system it takes about 30 seconds sometimes more for something to appear on the screen and from cold boot it starts stops and then starts again before loading.
Once its loaded it is taking forever to get into windows Im running 2 6gb/s SSD's in raid and the windows logo is able to appear and flash 3 or 4 times before I even get into windows.
Ive tried it with just a single drive and re installations of windows but get exacly the same thing its driving me mad as Ive spent so much money on this machine. Details of my system are below:
    MSI X79A GD45 v1.0 Bios 1.6
    Intel I7 3820
    Corsair Vengeance 16gb 1600 Cl9
    2 x GTX 680 in SLi
Creative Soundblaster 3D Recon Fatality Sound Card
    2 x Sandisk Extreme 240gb in Raid 0
    Silvertone Strider 850w PSU
    LG Bluray Writer

Updated the SSD Firmwares and it made no difference. Ive already tried single drives and the same. The drives are installed into SATA 1 and SATA2 ports the 6gb/s ones. The hang time is atleast 20 seconds at the splash screen alone before loading into windows. I checked the event log for booting and this is what it showed:

  • Single page application and page load time

I'm trying to instrument a "single page application" with Application Insights but it seems that there is not way to provide manually the performance data (page load time) when invoking the logPageView() method.
The single page application has a "unique page" and all views are displayed using internal routing feature without refreshing the main page once it is loaded. So the logPageView() method is invoked multiple times: one of each displayed view.
It means that the built-in performance counter (netCon, ..., ptotal) based on window.performance.timing.* do not make sense for this type of application, that should be based on manual computation of the time needed to render each view.
Is there any method to provide manually this information using logPageView() or separate method ? If not, is there any idea to fully support in the future the single page application ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Maurizio

    Hello Maurizio,
Do you still have the same issue with the latest
    AI in Azure Portal?
There should be new API layer with the ability to submit custom properties and metrics. This might work well for you scenario. AI nugets are still in preview, please, use "Show Prerelease" in VS when adding those.

  • Slow keynote and pages

Why does it take 2 seconds to move an object in Keynote and Pages?

Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. One backup is not enough to be safe. The backups can be made with Time Machine or with Disk Utility. Preferably both.
Erase and install OS X. This operation will destroy all data on the startup volume, so you had be better be sure of the backups. If you upgraded from an older version of OS X, you'll need the Apple ID and password that you used, so make a note of those before you begin.
When you restart, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process in Setup Assistant. That’s when you transfer the data from a backup.
Select only users and Computer & Network Settings in the Setup Assistant dialog—not Applications or Other files and folders. Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled.
    After that, run Software Update.
If the problem is resolved after the clean installation, reinstall third-party software selectively. I can only suggest general guidelines. Self-contained applications that install into the Applications folder by drag-and-drop or download from the App Store are usually safe. Anything that comes packaged as an installer or that prompts for an administrator password is suspect, and you must test thoroughly after reinstalling each such item to make sure you haven't restored the problem.
I strongly recommend that you never reinstall commercial "security" products or "utilities," nor any software that changes the user interface or the behavior of built-in applications such as Safari. If you do that, the problem is likely to recur.
Before installing any software, ask yourself the question: "Am I sure I know how to uninstall this without having to wipe the volume again?" If the answer is "no," stop.
Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it.

  • Safari extremely slow and pages load with errors

Not sure if this is related to other Safari posts, but when I try to load a page from many sites, including this one, the speed is extremely slow and there are invariably errors reported on the bottom status bar. I'm on a new Mac Pro, and I haven't added any add-ons to Safari or changed system settings. My internet connection is DSL on ethernet, and there are no problems with email or on my old G4 using Explorer 5.1. At this point G4's Explorer is light years faster than Safari on this machine. I'm going to try Mozilla Firefox, but is there any hope for Safari?
    Thanks,
    Peggy

    Hi Peggy
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Try this to speed up Safari.
First, make sure you are not using Rosetta. Go to Safari's info panel (Application folder>Safari.app>Single click>Apple Key I). If Rosetta is selected, uncheck it.
    Network Connection
Go to the System Preferences>Network panel
    - Location - set up a personal location by clicking on the drop down menu and selecting "add a location". Use a name familiar to you. Once established, select "apply".
    - Next, click on the "Show" drop down menu and select Network Port Configurations. Only Ethernet ought to be checked. Move it to the top of the list (you can drag it). Select "apply".
    - Back to the "Show" menu, depending on your connection select "Ethernet". Click on the TCP panel. There, enter 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 (separate lines) in the DNS servers box and select "apply".
Creating a personal location, plus adding the DNS codes seems to speed things up. Otherwise, the "automatic" function has a tendency to "search" for available locations.
In the Finder, go to your Utilities folder and select "Terminal". Once the screen is open enter lookupd -flushcache and press return. This clears out the DNS cache. Once done, quit Terminal.

  • MacBook Pro (mid 2010) - Slow Startup and Initial Load of Apps after Mavericks Install

    Hello everyone,
Long time Snow Leopard user here.  I've been absolutely, 100% thrilled with my MBP's performance / speed since mid 2010.  Since installing Mavericks I've noticed two things:
    1. Initial on boot load times seem much slower
    2.  The first time you open an app (Safari, even TextEdit) is far slower than in Snow Leopard.
Now granted, once the computer has been on for about 5 minutes, and once you've had an application open for 1-2 minutes, than performance is okay once again.  But it seems that quite literally everytime you do "anything" for the first time since the computer has been turned on you run the risk of a spinning beachball and an extended wait.  This simply never happened in Snow Leopard.
I'm not a computer science major but I do understand that when you do something for the first time since a reboot it will need to load new files into the RAM which takes time.  However, I've been using this computer since 2010 and have never experienced this behavior / speed / delay, etc... something seems fundamentally different.
For example, even just opening finder, and navigating to the Applications folder results in sluggish behavior the first time.  Also, anytime you first click the top menu bar in an application you run the risk of a beachball.
It doesn't seem like a failing hard drive because I can read/write large chunks of data one an app is finally loaded.  It's just initially loading the app takes quite literally 10-20 times longer than Snow Leopard.  It seems like perhaps Mavericks itself, the core of the new OS was perhaps installed in a bad sector of the HD, but none of my other files are on bad sectors... if that makes sense.  Again - I'm not a computer science major so I'm largely just making things up
It also seems as if multitasking and switching between several open apps has seen a decrease in performance.  Could it be that perhaps Mavericks RAM management is superior to Snow Leopard, but only if there is a TON of RAM to go around?  Could it be as simple as Macs with only  4GB installed should not be allowed to even install Mavericks?
Does this sound normal for Mavericks considering I have a C2D processor, a non SSD, and only 4GB ram?  I know those specs are "outdated" for 2014, but keep in mind these were the specs that I've always had and with Snow Leoapard I was consistently thrilled with the speed of the computer.
I suppose my question is: should my strategy be to simply turn the computer on, get a cup of coffee and let everything load and maybe even have my frequently used apps load on startup, etc... and carry on as normal?  Does something seem off?  Should I invest in a new SSD / RAM upgrade?  I know the upgrades couldn't hurt, but the issue is that I was perfectly content until upgrading to Mavericks
I've tried booting into OS X Recovery mode and using the Disk Utility.  I've tried Safe Mode.  I've included a "EtreCheck" report below.  I'm open to any ideas / suggestions.
    Thanks!!

Wish I could be of some help, but I'm having similar issues on my mid 2011 macbook pro with 8 GB ram. It's very frustrating. I haven't worked on a computer this slow since the early 90's. Even simple things like signing in to this site bring up the beach ball for maybe ten seconds. When opening up apps I often have to wait minutes, and often end up force quitting when they hang. I'm using force quit a dozen or more times a day, when it used to be very rare.
I don't know if it's Mavericks. I installed a new hard drive in November, but the problems really started getting bad since the latest upgrade.
It's not just opening apps. If I have an app open in the background and switch to it I have similar issues. Watching a simple video is often accompanied by stalls and delays - which is really bad as I'm often using the laptop to edit video. It's become unuseable for work.
Perhaps the most frustrating is clicking on a link, only to find Safari decides to complete a previous scroll that it had paused. The page jumps down, and sometimes I end up clicking on a link I didn't want. Then I have to wait for THAT spinning beach ball before I can go back to the previous spinning beach ball.
It can take up to ten minutes to restart. I've tried everything I could find on these pages so far, and nothing has worked.
I thought maybe it was something I've done (and perhaps it is), but I keep seeing others with similar issues.
