Slow start up after sleep

hey all,
when I wake my computer up from sleep it makes a gearing up noise as if the hard drive is getting ready, and the screen stays black for 7 seconds, then blue for about 3 seconds, and then finally the desktop appears. All of the other iMacs that I've used start up immediately, and this slow wake from sleep is affecting the performance of some of my important applications. Does anyone know how to speed the wake from sleep issue?

1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
6. Release the keys.
Let us know if this helps,
Miriam

  • I am having a problem with very slow start up after expanding RAM on my 2009 Mac Pro.

I am having a problem with very slow start up after expanding RAM on my 2009 Mac Pro (8 Core 2.93GHz). When I run the Mac Pro with 2 x 2Gb RAM it takes 4 seconds before the gray screen, chime and spinning wheel appear. However when I expand the RAM to 20GB the grey screen and chimes appear after a long 20+ second black screen.
    The RAM modules are paored  2 x 4GB Crucial CT51272BA1339.M18FMR and  6 x 2GB SAMSUNG M391B5673FH0-CH9, all DDR3 ECC.
Reading articles on the internet, I thought it may be damaged RAM modules, but I have completed memtest and all are okay. I have tried changing the pairs around and if I use any paired 2 modules the Mac Pro starts normally, only when I try running more than 2 modules the delayed start up happens. (black screen 20 Seconds)
I also have tried PRAM and SMU resets after changing the RAM setups, and the issues always occurs when I have more than 2 modules. As you can see I have 6 SAMSUNG modules and even with identical modules the issue happens, when increasing the RAM to more than 2 modules.
The Mac Pro runs fine after the start up screen and can see all the modules, but has anyone else come across this issue, or have any ideas as to why my Mac Pro is taking 20 seconds to start up with 20 GB RAM?

Hi there. Thanks for your comments.
I have tried all the different combinations of RAM setup, and as stated in my initial topic, the Mac Pro boot up time only slows when I have more that 2 modules. Where I place these does not seem to make a difference.
I have taken the Mac Pro to an Apple Reseller technician yesterday and they where not able to find any RAM errors. Apparently the boot up time is within Apple's acceptable parameters for this set up.
Could anyone that is running a Mac Pro 2009 with more that 4 modules of RAM, please let me know if the boot up time is normal. ( the time it takes from pressing the power button to seeing the gray screen around 16 - 20 seconds)
Or is anyone else having the same issues?
    thanks for your responce

  • Why is my Macbook Pro slow to wake after sleep?

Why is my Macbook Pro slow to wake after sleep?

I am having the same issue. I hook it up to the charger in the evening and close the lid. When I go to use it the next time it takes a good 30 seconds or so to wake up. The screen shows the log in screen but typing doesn't work and the cursor is frozen. Sometimes it will even give the rainbow wheel for the cursor, so it seem like it is processing whatever to get going. I also notice that my battery won't be fully charged at anywhere from 95%-99% after being charged a full evening. What can I do to change whatever is happening because it is pretty crappy to charge it all night expecting to have a full battery for the next use, plus the issue of having to sit there waiting for it to boot every time.

  • Leopard slow starting up after latest update

My MAC Pro is very slow starting up after latest update. Before it took 15 seconds and now takes approximately 8 or 9 minutes. There is a blank blue screen for the entire time, i have repaired disk permissions but this has not helped either. Can any one suggest anything else.

Download an appropiate utility such as Onyx, etc., and purge all caches, user and system. Also do an [SMC reset|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411] and a [NVRAM reset|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379]. When you repaired permissions, you also repared the disk itself, right?

  • Slow start up after 10.8.3

Does anyone now have slow start up after udating to 10.8.3?

I hope this helps, I uninstalled TinkerTool System and the problem went away. I guess it was a conflict problem.

  • Slow to respond after sleep

    Hi all,
    I have a mid-2012 Macbook Pro running OS 10.8.2.
Unfortunately most of the time my computer is unresponsive for about 2 minutes when coming out of sleep. This happens when I close the lid of the computer, then re-open it the next day (say >8 hours). The screen will show an image, but does not respond to mouse or keyboard. After 2 minutes it will start responding again.
I have already tried clearing the NVRAM (think that what it is called?) and the other item that can be cleared from booting (sorry forgot the term). However this has not helped.
I have pasted below the data from Console after the PC is taken out of sleep at 15:05 (note, didn't become responsive until 15:06), as well as what was happening an hour earlier while the lid was still closed...
    Any thoughts greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks
    Oliie

    Hi There
Sorry to bump this, but I haven't yet recieved any replies, and I would quite like to find out what the problem is behind this.
Also, to add to the problem, the computer is now generally really slow all the time, not just after sleeping.
    Thanks in advance
    Cuby

  • Starting up after sleep

Hi I'm having problems starting up my imac G4 after it's been asleep. It makes all the right noises and asks for my password but there is no mouse curser visible and it won't let me type anything in...the curser flashes in the password tab but nothing i type appears.
any help would be hugely appreciated.
    Cheers

Try using Safe Mode to restart.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
If that gets you to a login screen where you can type and continue on to your user account, run Disk Utility and use the +Repair Disk Permissions+ routine.
FYI - You posted in the +iMac (CRT)+ category, which is for the older G3 iMac. However, you question does not sound like a iMac G4 specific issue.
Edit: I just realized that you seem to be saying this happens after sleep, not when you initially start up. If this problem does not occur initially, then start up normally and do +Repair Disk Permissions+. After restarting, see of the issue with sleep occurs.

  • Slow to wake after "sleeping".

Recently when my mac "sleeps" the monitor is hard to awaken. The screen stays dark and clicking a key or hitting the space bar doesn't bring a quick response as it once did.  It takes a minute or two before it wakes.  This is a new computer only 4 months old.  What could be causing this?

Some users have reported solving this problem by resetting the NVRAM (PRAM.) One user reports long delays in waking from sleep after enabling FileVault. I can't reproduce that experience, but if applicable, you could try disabling FileVault.
If you've installed something called "iCleanMemory," or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "free up" memory, remove it according to the developer's instructions after backing up all data. Reboot and test. If there's no change, continue.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Can't start applications after sleep

Twice now, after waking from sleep, I have been unable to launch any applications. They will bounce endlessly in the dock and activity monitor, but never open correctly.
    Also, they are not force-quittable.
Eventually I have to hard-reboot. On reboot, everything works fine again.
    Worrying!
    Any ideas?

Okay, I have found something which makes things better. My MBP had a Belkin USB hub connected to a Belkin KVM for keyboard/mouse/screen sharing - which all worked fine before Leopard. The keyboard and Mouse are Microsoft ones and I had the Mac IntelliPoint and IntelliType drivers installed.
So I uninstalled those drivers and disconnected the hub and now things are much better. When I open my MBP lid, it wakes from sleep and I can use it. No more hard reboots. I figure its more likely that the drivers were the problem than the Belkin hardware.
I am still having the occasional hang - but not as much as before - ie it is now usable and I am not thinking of going back to Tiger.
I have the latest version of Parallels installed and found comments on another thread that that may be causing problems - will wait for an upgrade from them.

  • Macbook Pro has slow start up after Time Machine restore

My 2.4 Ghz Santa Rosa MBP had Ubuntu Hardy and 10.5 on it. I played with Ubuntu for a while and decided to go back to OS X only. I wiped the HDD and reinstalled Leopard, then restored from a time machine back-up. Since then, my MBP has gone to a white blank screen for about 5 or 6 seconds before displaying an apple on start up. What could be causing this? I tried disk utility options, nothing worked, restored from a different back- up with no luck also. Any Ideas? My start up has slowed a very noticeable amount since going back to one OS
    Thanks in Advance

  • Slower start up after updates

    Hi,
I have owned several Macs through the years, but one thing puzzles me: Why is it that every Mac I ever owned has a fast start up until I start updating it using Software Update. Then start up (and sometimes shut downs) are suddenly a lot slower than before. It will never get as fast as it was and it only becomes worse the more updates I install through time.
The only way to make it fast again is to make a clean install from the CD-ROM.
Aren't updates supposed to make the Mac software better, faster and more secure all together?

  • Slow Screen Sharing after Sleep Wakeup

I use my MBP to Screenshare with my Mac Pro QuadCore (using the former to run programs on the latter). Normally it works fine and is fast enough to feel fairly seamless.
However, when my Mac Pro goes to sleep and then wakes up, Screensharing slows to a crawl. It doesn't always happen, but often enough to be incredibly annoying Reconnecting doesn't help, nor does restarting my MBP. The only cure is to restart my Mac Pro, at which point it's as fast as it was before.
Any suggestions to fix this? Anyone else experiencing similar problems?

Has anyone tried this: http://blog.macminicolo.net/post/33839671756/build-a-dummy-dongle-for-a-headless -mac-mini? i tried quartz debug from xcode as suggested here http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1422058&page=2 with no luck.

  • Slow start up after new hard drives

I recently replaced my OEM hard drive (160 GB Seagate) with two 750 GB Seagate drives. I have concatenated them into one huge drive. I then backed up everything from the original drive from a firewire enclosure to the new super massive drive. All is working but start up is super slow. I also have a PowerBook G4 800Mhz. The PowerMac used to be a blink in start up compared to the 1 minute for the PowerBook. Now they are about the same. I have seen some speed increases but also some speed loss. What should I do? I tested my system with Xbench and it shows a vast inmprovement with reading and writing big files but a slower performance with small files. Is this normal with bigger drives? Is there something to optimize the drive?

    Hi,
When using a striped RAID set as a boot drive I found in most cases the startup time can be a few seconds slower. In addition, I found no evidence that applications launch faster on a RAID. However, a striped RAID set will copy or duplicate data much quicker.
A striped RAID set will provide a lot of additional speed for those that are copying or manipulating large files but will provide very little additional performance enhancement. In some tasks it will be slower than a single drive.
The downside of a striped RAID set is reliablility. Striped RAIDs are much more likely to fail leaving the user with lost files unless they have a backup. A dual drive RAID is twice as likely to fail as a single drive. A 5 drive RAID is 5 times more likely to fail. See the WiebeTech white paper on this topic for more details at:
    http://www.wiebetech.com/pressreleases/release.php?id=36
You can also see barefeats article that indicates two drives can actually perform faster than a RAID:
    http://www.barefeats.com/hard63.html
    "RAID PAIR or INDEPENDENT DRIVES?
Based on the mixed gains of the RAID pairs over single drives, I hypothesized that there are more avantages to having two independent drives as opposed to a bootable RAID 0 pair. Why? Because things don't happen in sequence. Your normal work flow causes storage events to happen in parallel."
While I like to use a RAID for video work and even create a bootable RAID for this purpose I still keep the internal system drive as a single drive. Its safer and still performs well. To each his own poison but I want a single boot drive in my PowerMacs.

  • Slow Start-up after installing new hard drive

I just installed a new Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500 GB Hard Drive 2.5 Inch, 8 MB Cache, 5400 RPM SATA II WD5000BEVT in my late 2008 MacBook. Seems to work fine once things are running but start-up is taking as much as 1 minute. Previous Hard Drive was the factory 160 GB unit and it started twice as fast. Is it normal for start-up to take longer with a bigger hard drive?

Sorry you're not getting any responses. I guess sometimes a new thread can fall through the cracks.
I'm not much help on this one but I wanted to chime in because I'm having the same problem. I just put a brand new Hitachi Travelstar 7k500 7200 16gb hard drive in my macbook pro and, although everything seems to be running well (and the drive is super quiet), my start up time is considerably slower.
I cloned my original drive to the new drive using Carbon Copy Cloner and everything seems to be identical. So, I'm a bit confused as to why the start up is so much much slower.
I should add, there is one more variable for me. I upgraded my ram from 2 to 4gb (OWC modules) at the same time I replaced the drive. However, the ram is fully recognized and programs seem to be loading and running at least as quickly as before.
If I find anything out I'll check back in.
