Slow Start-up and finder not responding

So I guess I should explain everything.
I have a macbook pro that I bought in july of 2011. A few weeks ago my charger broke and I did not have the money to replace it until now. Obviously, my macbook died since then and has been dead until yesterday when I got a new charger.
I plugged in the new charger and I noticed it was taking a long time to turn on. It stays at the apple logo with the loading circle thing. also it had the progress bar as if started up in safe mode. I forced it off two times with the power button, after waiting 10-20 minutes on the apple logo screen. the third time it finally took me to my login screen and I was able to login in use it without any issue.
I turned it off last night and when I went turn it on today it was taking long again. Same screen as the yesterday. It finally turned on after about 2 hours of turning off and on and waiting. also did the command+alt+P+R and the safe mode and it did not help.
I have it on now but my Finder is not working. If i close out all windows there is just the rainbow  loading circle thing. I can only click on things in my dock(besides finder). I cannnot click on anything in the bar on the top unless I have a window open. When I do have a window open I can click on the things in the left corner but not the other side (like wifi, time, spotlight). Also, the battery life is not showing up there either. 
I have an appointment at the genius bar tomorrow but I need to backup my photos and music. I tried uploading them to dropbox but since finder is not working it won't let me and ends up freezing and I have to force quit safari..
SO can anyone help me fix finder so I can backup  my files onto dropbox? And if anyone can help me with the startup issue that would be great. I have a feeking I will need to uninstall and then reinstall the OS because that's what i've seen online as a solution to the startup issue, that is why I want to backup the files..

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
- History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
- Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

    often failing hard drives will pass all tests by the utilities.
    you may want to back up any important files just in case.
    if the iBook boots up from the OS install CD/DVD with no problems, issues could be caused by the corrupted files on the hard drive or failing drive.

  • Files disappeared and Finder not responding

    Since upgrading to OS X Yosemite, I have had a number of small issues, but today I lost all the Files and Folders from the Desktop on my 27" iMac and when attempting to access 'Finder' I keep getting message that says "Finder quit unexpectedly while using the Finder plug-in"

    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

    Step 1
    For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
    from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
    In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
    Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
              DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
    (not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
    I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
    If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
    In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
    Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Slow start up and not responding Firefox 3.6.13

    Slow start up and not responding when I open Firefox 3.6.13. As long as 1 minute. I tried in save mode and it doesn't seem to happen. I used McAfee before and now use Norton IS with Real Time Malwarebytes. Still the same speed opening up, so the virus software is not causing the problem I think. I disable a lot of the add-on and still the same problem. Any suggestions?

    If other softwares runs fast and smooth it's obvious that it's a Firefox-problem.
    Probably because of a corrupt profile.

    Regarding slow start up, it's a common and old problem.
    Not all FF-users experience it as a problem, but I used to belong to them who suffered.
    If your cold start up (the first start after a Windows boot) is really slow, but a warm start (the second time you restart Firefox) is much faster - then I think I can help you.

    I run on Win 7 64-bit and on Firefox 4.0 betas, but that doesn't matter as it works also on older Windows and Firefox versions.
    Regarding your anti-virus software. I have tried the most of them. The best tradeoff is in my opinion Eset Smart Security (NOD32).

    If that doesn't fix it try starting in Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs?
    Restart holding the "shift" key.
    (Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)
    If this works look in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and delete any third party login items (-), you can always add them back with the (+). Don’t just “hide” them by checkmark.

    You need to be running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 at the very least in order to sync your iPad with iTunes so you could update your Mac, if it can be updated, and if you care to do so.
    If that's not an option, you will have to find someone that can restore the device for you with their computer running iTunes or make an appointment at an Apple Store and ask them to restore the device for you.
    I hope that you have an iCloud backup, because you will lose everything on the device when it is restored.

    Also, I would not give up on the reset technique....holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appears. It takes about 10-15 seconds and sometimes just a little longer to get the logo to appear.

    Geoff-
    Go to Settings-Safari and Clear History and Clear Cookies and Data.
    Another thing you can try is to double-click the Home button.  A row of recent Apps will line up along the bottom of the screen.  Scroll across and find the Safari icon.  Press on it for a couple of seconds until it starts to wiggle.  A red minus sign will appear on each icon.  Press on Safari's minus sign to remove it.  This may clear its memory of the bad Google page.
    If this does not help, try resetting (rebooting) the iPad.  Hold both the Home and Sleep buttons for several seconds until the Apple logo appears.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" arrow.  The iPad will restart after a couple of minutes.  Resetting this way will not hurt anything, and sometimes clears up mysterious problems.

    None of my pictures that I uploaded into iPhoto are in my Finder under Pictures.  Should I copy and paste my folders from iPhoto into here, in case something happens to my iPhoto program (in addition to backing them up onto an external hard drive like I already do)?
    No, that's just wasting space.  A back up needs to be on a different disk.
    Your photos are within the iPhoto Library.

  • Photoshop failed to quit and is not responding

    I've had a nasty problem for the past few days that seems to be getting gradually worse. ie it now happens within a few minutes of openning Photoshop, whereas before it was happenning after an hour or two of working on an image....
    At some point while working on a moderately complex .psd (roughly 70mb with some 15 layers) Photoshop hangs and Force Quit Applications tells me that Photoshop is not responding. I can't identify anything particular that i'm doing that triggers it.... i use a fairly wide variety of tools and filters and the hang doesn't seem to be triggered by anything specific.
    I force Photoshop to quit, and it disappears from the Force Quit Application list. However, after quitting, I cannot open .psd or .jpg files from Bridge or from Finder. Raw files open up ok from Bridge into Camera Raw. And, when I try to shut down or restart my machine i get: " Logout has timed out - The application Photoshop failed to quit and is not responding." so the only way to restart is to force a shut down with the power button. After restarting the Mac Photoshop works ok again for a a while and then the problem happens again.
    I have repaired my disk permissions and run Diskwarrior over both my Mac HD ad the external Firewire drive where all my images live - which didn't identify anything out or the ordinary.
    Any thoughts on what else I can do to eliminate this problem would be v gratefully received

    Neil, just for reference the Cron script problem was fixed in 10.4.2 and should be run on boot if they haven't already. This doesn't mean that running cocktail occasionally to make sure doesn't have value or to run the maintance scripts early doesn't help (it wont hurt).

    The 3 Gb limitation is a limitation of 32bit operating systems and software. Photoshop can't address (use) more than 3Gb regardless of how much you have free or installed. OSX 10.4 is kind of 64bit but not completly, it has the ability to remap memory so EACH program can use a max of 3Gb. so in your case with 5ish Gb used PS is using 3Gb, Safari is using a bit and the OS is prob using most of the rest.
    Looking at what you posted the only two figures your really interested in is the Used and Free (which add up to approx 9Gb). The fact that the used number doesn't change from the several files open and the liquify filter opening indicates to me that it has already grabbed as much memory as it can( it's using 3Gb of the 5.52, the rest is the OS etc).
    Simply put PS IS running out of memory. You can help this by putting the memory allocation in the PS preferences higher (the OS will use other areas of memory so it wont cause a problem) and make sure the scratch disk is set to a drive with plenty of space. But keep in mind the Liquify filter is VERY memory intensive so you may not be able to use it with lots of files open.

    I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your MacBook Pro since your recent Yosemite update. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. If you are having intermittent but persistent responsiveness issues with your mouse or trackpad, you may want to try using Activity Monitor to see if these incidents correspond to occupied system resources, especially system memory or CPU.     We run a real estate website on Business Catalyst.
    I created around 50 web-app items ( properties ) at the moment without problems.
    But now it starts to slow down, when i trie to save the web -app item, the save preload keeps running ( hanging ) at 50 procent of the time.
    It is also hard to scroll true my web-app item pages, also hanging problem.
    Does anyone have / had a simular problem?

    We experience big performance problems with BC's v3 interface ever since they switched to Amazon last December. You are lucky if it's only slow uploading, we, meaning our clients and us, experiencing very often the editor timing out when saving or uploading, the wheel of death starts turning and does not stop. It does not happen with the development editor or sftp.
    We have opened several tickets but the BC support is absolutely useless, they always reply that they could not replicate the issue. 
    Our clients and us are completely fed up with this issue, sometimes losing your work, sometimes just being unable to get it done, but BC does not seem to get this under control, or they put the EU data center on a low cost backbone....
    If anyone has a solution, we gladly take it!
