SLOW start up on Mac book

Here's my setup
iMac with External HD
My iPhoto library is on the External HD.
So, when I start iPhoto from iMac it starts just fine.
When I start iPhoto from Mac book, it takes 2-3 minutes for iPhoto to start. It's NOT network speed! The EX HD spins up as soon as I start iPhoto from the Mac book. It's just that iPhoto seems to hang there for 2-3 minutes !?!?!?!?!
Once started, everything's fine again.

If you go to System Preferences>Users & Groups>Login Items you will see a list of all of the applications that will start up when you turn on the machine. The only item i have in login items is 'itunes helper'. So for example, when i installed 'drop box' it was set by default to launch automatically when i turn on the computer. You can disable this in the app's settings or in 'Login items' window.

  • HT6114 Slow start up on Mac Book Air second and fourth generations

Both of our Mac Book Air computers are slow at start-up. Average time to start-up is 41-65 sconds. Apple logo on screen with "circle" winding around... Any help our suggestions on how to reduce this start-up time would be appreciated.

If you have the exact same problem - take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.  If you have AppleCare call them!

  • Start up on mac book pro

Hi there. I have recently erased my HD on mac book pro and reinstalled osx. Since then when I start the mac up when I come to log on I have my normal ID profile and one next to it that says Disk Password. Doesn't matter which one I click it takes me to my normal ID profile. However it is so slow compared to how it was before. Before I reinstalled I only had my normal ID showing on start up and took 30 seconds from turning it on to being free to do whatever on it. Can anyone help please?

Open the Security & Privacy preference pane and select the FileVault tab. Does it show that encryption is in progress?

  • On start up my mac book pro shows a white screen with a folder with a ? in it then switches to the apple symbol with the loading bar under it but it freezes about half way any ideas

My mac book pro on start up shows a white screen with a folder with a question mark in it then switches to the apple symbol with the loading bar under it but it freezes about half way. Only started to have problems since upgrading to yosemite any ideas.

I do hope you have recent backup, because it look like your hard disk is failing. You can start up in Recovery Mode, and run Disk Utility to see if the disk can be fixed:  OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support

  • Loud beep sound when starting up my Mac book air (2007), right before the classic start-up noise

There is a very loud beep right before the classic Mac start up "bong"
I'm thinking there might be something wrong with the ram...
    Any answers? Thanks!

Although it's an older article, for the most part it's applicable -
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2538
The beep on startup is usually an indication of a failed RAM module. It's also possible that a recent firmware update on the machine was botched. If you didn't recently perform a firmware update then it's probably the RAM. As the RAM is soldered directly to the logic board it cannot be replaced individually, it'd require a full logic board replacement.
Given the age of the machine, it's unlikely still covered by the AppleCare Protection Plan and definitely not the one year limited warranty.
The next course of action would be to bring the machine into the Genius Bar or AASP and have them evaulate your repair options.

  • Slower start up on Mac

Just comparing out new Macbook Air to my over 2 year old Macbook. I've tried deleting/uninstalling unnecessary stuff, but it still takes a long time to load. When I open up chrome it bounces for along time whereas in one click on the Macbook air it is up.
Is there even a possible way to speed things up? My old comp is still on Snow Leopard. Would updating speed it up? Just curious.
I don't really want to add more memory. I just want to know ways to speed up the comp without doing all that. I figured deleting stuff would help but it doesn't. I don't get it.

Have a two year old MacBook Pro here on 10.6.8 with a 5,400 RPM drive and Safari loads nealry instantly as well as Firefox.
Chrome is rather bloated, so that might account for it. Also the Air has a SSD which is fast on all it's parts where a hard drive gets slower the more it's filled and most used data is written to the slower innter sectors.

Far as operating system speeds, Snow Leopard is fastest and 10.5, 10.7 and 10.8 are slower freshly installed on the same hardware.
Your new Air cannot run Snow Leopard so you can't use the fastest OS version, but you can make the 2 year old machine fastest possible with Snow Leopard.
Take a look at my User Tips here to speed up your machine., you likely need to clean it up, fix any software issues, run the #12 OnyX cache cleaning routine and finally do a defrag.

  • Slow internet on 2012 Mac Book Pro

Over the past 4 months the MacBook pro has been running slow when connected to the internet. The computer itself runs fine. Had installed Yosemite Beta, but the problem was occurring prior to move on Mavericks. Went to the Apple store and there was a hard rest of the computer, no improvement in internet speed.
I run wireless diagnostics which tells me everything is running fine.  Another iMac on the network also running well. iPad and iPhones also running well.
OOKLA speed test ping of 29 ms, download speed of 0.52 Mbps and upload of 1.67 Mbps.
On ATT network rated for 54 Mbps.

  • Slow internet on a mac book pro

I have had an issue with slow wireless and internet for a while but never thought nothing of it but poor service. But the wireless on my imac works perfectly. Some pages load slower that others and streaming videos are choppy. Im not sure whats different between my pro and my imac besides a better airport. Anyone have similar problems or any recommendations? Thanks for the help.

Did you see the patch for 10.5.8 that handles the problem of connections being slower when on battery power than when on A/C? It's here:

  • Slow boot up in Mac book Pro

Running Leopard with Latest firmware. Have had increasingly slower boot times over the past 3-5 months. Boot times exceeding 3-4 minutes. I have only a couple of programs that load at boot time, and run in the back ground. And in fact have used them since using Tiger OS with no boot problems to speak of. No compatibility issues, w/ Leopard to my knowledge. Boot times just getting longer, Help?

Duplicate fonts were slowing me down on startup. Give this a try. It seems rather low-tech, but it really did the trick for me.
    Open FontBook
    - You'll see a bullet next to each of your duplicate fonts
    Select All your fonts
    Click Edit, Resolve Duplicates
    Reboot
Let us know if that works.

  • On starting my new Mac Book pro, i have 3 i have three names, my lion one and two from my windows laptop. Can i amalgamate these into one name only.?

The first time i booted my new Mac i created a password, then i transfered my files etc from my windows laptop, all welland good.
Now i find that i have three names including the lion to sign in to access my computer.
Is there a way to amalgamate the two from windows PC with my Mac password.?
I am finding it a bit hard to move over to my Mac but i will pesevere, Thank you.

    Few are having this problem.
There is no single sure shot solution for this problem.
Apple may or may not provide an update to correct this.
Until then manually connecting to wifi may be the only way.
    Best.
