Slow start up. Sometimes freezes.

When I shut down my Macbook and then I power it back up some time later the start up is taking twice as long as usual. Sometimes the little circular thing that shows at start up freezes. It usually goes back to normal if I press down the power button. Not the "hold for 10 seconds" to shut down way, but just one quick press.
My Macbook has been acting up really bad recently and I can't determine why.
My wireless internet has also been dropping every couple of mintutes. Help!
Thanks in advance.

I have no idea about the startup prob, but the Wi-Fi is an ongoing issue in earlier MacBooks and MacBook Pros that has two mile-tall threads on it at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1008143&tstart=0 for Tiger machines running 10.4.10 and http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1231631&tstart=0 for those with Leopard.

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Satellite L300 - Very slow start up and freezes

    Hi all,
I have a Satellite L300 which has treated me well - however over the past 2 months it has got really slow and freezes quite often. I have run through anti virus, spybot etc and come up with nothing.
Last night I tried to reformat the system by pressing and holding 0 which did not work then tried with F8 which let me do a further scan but no reformat. I am now quite pleased that I failed to do the reformat as I purchased windows 7 after the original purchase of the laptop.
Any ideas anyone - or anyone with the same/simular problems?

    Hey,
That means you have Windows 7 installed at the moment and not preinstalled Windows version?!
Well, in this case the HDD recovery option is not available anymore. You can do this on preinstalled Windows only.
To format your notebook you need Toshiba recovery disk.
    Did you create it?

Could it be the external drive that all music is stored on? I have 60 GB of music on an external drive (through firewire).
    Help!

But by the time I can get to the desktop to open Activity Monitor, the problem has passed. It's all between the chime and logging in. I've looked in Console but don't know how to interpret what I see there. Do these mean anything?

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it, which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
The section Install missing components has advice on breaking down the iTunes installer into the individual .msi files which might prove useful if one component, such as Apple Application Support, won't install normally.

Could you try disabling Firefox's hardware graphics acceleration? You usually need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Options > Advanced
On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"
If you restart Firefox, is the issue resolved (or improved)?

  • Macbook Pro slow start up, freezing on Safari, weird things on iTunes

I have a mid-2012 Macbook Pro and it's never seemed to operate optimally. It's slow to start up and sometimes freezes on Safari pages. ITunes is difficult to navigate and does weird things. I haven't done the latest update because we don't have Wi-Fi at home. Could it be that or could I have a hardware problem? Thanks!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

You have SCADS of extensions and the things running. McAfee, Intego, Orbicule, CleanMyMac, and others I've not ever even heard of. My first recommendation would be to remove all of these and see if things improve.

  • My iMac from 2007 is slow and sometimes freezes, what can I do? (Software is updated and RAM is maxed at 4GB, CleanMyMax 2 is runed)

Hi, My iMac from 2007 is slow and sometimes freezes, what can I do?
All my Software is updated and RAM is maxed at 4GB. I have used CleanMyMac 2 to clean the iMac.
I also have a problem with Wi-Fi is jumping between On and Looking for Networks

Almost certainly that is your problem, Norton causes more problems than it ever helps. Not only is it unnessary no antivirus app is necessary. Keep your machine up-to-date using Software Update and in most situations that is all you need for security.

  • Slow start w/ delayed browsing

Recently I have been experiencing some slow moving instances with Safari.
Upon clicking Safari to open up the browser, it now takes approximately 10-15 seconds for Safari to open up. The icon will bounce 9-10 times and I will get the rainbow circle for an brief amount of time.
It also seems that while browsing I now ocassionaly get the rainbow circle as well and have even had Safari crash on instances.
Even when closing Safari it sometimes freezes up for 5 - 10 seconds before closing.
I have tried everything including repairing permissions, removing the plist, removing unecessary bookmarks and I clear my history/cache/cookies regularly.
I experienced this once before, but the computer was exhibiting other problems as well such as delayed start up of other programs and such. This time I'm not having other issues, just with Safari.
Any ideas what could be causing this? Could it be a Spyware/Malware issue? What is the overall thought on Macscan?
The last time I ran into issues I resorted to a complete reload of the system and that set everything back to working order, but then I had to sit through all the updates.
Also, how often does everyone suggest repairing the permissions?
    Thanks for any help.

    Dave
Question for you: Do you have internet apps
    SpeedDownload, iGetter, PithHelmet, Acid Search,
Safari Enhancer ? Or Norton or Virex? Sometimes
non-apple internet apps need updating or
uninstalling. If you do, let us know which ones and
    which version, please.
I don't have anything of these sorts. I'm quite particular with what I install onto my computer.
    Have you done these?
    . Trash your Icons Folder:
    HD>Users>Home>YourName>Library>Safari -->Icons
Restart Safari and a new folder will be automatically
    regenerated.
(This folder saves favicons of all the sites you
visit. Needs cleaning periodically -- or you can
change that file's preferences to "Read Only"
rather than "Read & Write." This will keep it from
    growing in size.)
I wasn't aware of this. I will give it a shot and see how it effects things
    2. Launch Font Book and check all fonts for
duplicates. A duplicated font will have a bullet
beside the font family and you can resolve duplicates
by selecting the font and at the menu bar, go to Edit
    Resolve Duplicates.
Do this (one at a time) for each font with a bullet
    next to it.
I'll take a look into this as well.
    If you're still having problems:
    3. Shut down your computer . . . unplug the computer,
modem, and router, if you have one. Let everything
sit for 2-3 minutes. Plug everything back in, start
up your modem & router, then restart your computer.
I've done this on several ocassions (recently in fact) because I game online with my Playstation 2/PSP and when I run into problems this usually fixes things.
Thanks for the suggestions, when I get home to try all this I'll report back.
    Hope this helps

Both FF and IE are present on my laptop. I never use IE for browsing, but some websites open it for special purposes (BT for example in their Broadband help mode). I have wireless BB. At startup both FF and OE take forever to load. I seems independent of time of day or BB up/download speed, which BB is sometimes as slow as 0.5 meg and never exceeds 4.5. • Slow broadband speed and freezes 1 hour early morn...

I sometimes work during the night at home - but most nights between 01.30 and 02.30 am my broadband speed slows down drastically, sometimes causing freezing and websites cannot be accessed.  By 3am it starts to ease up. At the moment speed is ok at other times. Anyone any idea why this might happen, especially since it is so regular. When I spoke to the call centre they hadn't a clue why this would be happening. This has been happening over the last couple of years but I have never been given a possible explanation.

Do you have any software that could be doing a backup or other scheduled task such as a virus scan.

  • Slow Start up and other issues

Hi MBP users please help if u can...
I have a very slow start up time the last 2 days.
When finally up the hard disk is makes random ticking noises (not good when I'm recording music)
Also In the last couple of weeks I have been getting 'Random Shut Downs' Although this may have been due to a 'one click' surge protector and gang socket. This has been taken out of the loop and replaced with a standard gang socket - and I have no random shutdowns today.
I have read through previous posts regarding these issues and tried these solutions:
    Verified disk permissions
    Zapped the PRAM
    Apple Hardware Test
Nothing has worked - so I figure its time to start afresh - with a complete re-install!
I'm not looking forward to this as my software (Logic Pro) will take an age to set up to my requirements
Just wondered if anyone may know of another solution
Also as a side-note when I start up - I sometimes see the Hard Disk as my previous lap-top name/image (G4 PowerBook) could this be part of the problem?

Could be - because of the disk image, you actually have two mountable disks with OS X systems on them. Having two Mac OSs is not a good idea, and since one of them is not a valid Mac OS for the Intel-based MBP, this is a problem. Your occasional flash of the wrong disk suggests that this is your problem.
You might try opening the disk image from the G4 and deleting the System folder from it - you don't need it, and that is a likely source of the problems...
    Ps. 7+ minutes - wow!

  • My computer has been going slow, not it is freezing up every time I stop using the mouse

my Imac ,OS X version 10.9.5
The computer has been very slow, and is now freezing up
All I can do is shut it down and start up again

Are you using ZoneAlarm for security?
If so, try disabling the ZoneAlarm extension in Tools > Addons > Extensions and see if that helps.
