Slow start-up with K450e, programs hang/freeze.
Our K450e has been havings issues for over two months (purchased new August 2014). It takes around 10 minutes to boot-up. Various programs will hang or freeze once opened. It operated fine for the first two months, but since October it's been problematic. We've tried the Lenovo Solution Center, also restored the unit back to factory settings numerous times, but nothing has worked.
According to the diagnostic report, there are 2 failures: "Targeted Read Test" and "Smart Short Self Test." Can someone please help with a solution to these problems.
Solved!

Found my missing paperwork, contacted support and it appears I have a faulty hard drive. A replacement is on the way.

Lion very slow starting apps with Firewire 800 drive mounted.
When my Firewire 800 drive is in sleep mode, when I start up an app like MS Excel or Addressbook. I get a spining wheel and a delay before the app launches. Any ideas? Never happened in 10.6.Long shot: What format is the drive?

Issues with Quark Xpress Hang/Freeze when focus is shifted to anything else
I've been working on this issue since the 28th of Dec.
I've been in contact with Quark. They're still examining crash log.
I thought I'd share what is on my plate in hopes others might have had, and solved similar experience.
This message will be verbose in hope of giving the uber-guru answers to questions in advance of their being asked.
First portion will contain a log of actions taken and results there of.
Second will be the typical Quark Crash log I've been getting when the application is quit.
I will mention as well that I've received a clean bill of health from TechToolPro, DiskWarrior, etceteras, as well as Passed the tests from Apple Hardware Tests.
Let me know if I can provide any additional info
Log of Actions
Installation of new Quark, up to 6.5 only.
Completed at 5:27pm
Launching Quark under New User at 5:28
Launch successful.
Created one file. Saved file, selected finder, then text editor, the quark.
Quark still operating. added text, saved, and closed document.
selected finder, then text editor, the quark.
Quark still operating.
Manually quit quark from application menu at 5:33.
Application successfully "quit" without "crashing"
Repeating the procedure above at 5:34
Launched quark via double-click of previously saved file.
added text, saved, selected finder, then text editor, the quark.
Quark still operating.
selected finder, then text editor, the quark.
Quark still operating.
quit quark from cmd-tab cmd-q method causes "unexpected crash"
Ran several similar scenarios, with this as conclusion:
Launching quark from double click of application, creation of new document, saving, and quitting in ANY fashion allows safe quit
Launching Quark, opening from save/open dialog box an existing document, then quit with or without edit, using cmd-tab cmd-q allows safe quit
Double-clicking existing document to launch Quark, then closing document after edit and save or immediately, quark Unexp. Crash occurs with Cmd-Tab Cmd-Q every time.
Double-clicking existing documents to launch Quark, then closing document after edit and save, then create new document, with save and close, quark Unexp. Crash occurs with Cmd-Tab Cmd-Q every time.
Launching of Quark 6.50 under base user
Launching Quark, opening from save/open dialog box an existing document, then quit with or without edit, using cmd-tab cmd-q allows safe quit
Double-clicking existing document to launch Quark, then closing document after edit and save or immediately, quark Unexp. Crash occurs with Cmd-Tab Cmd-Q every time.
Double-clicking existing documents to launch Quark, then closing document after edit and save, then create new document, with save and close, quark Unexp. Crash occurs with Cmd-Tab Cmd-Q every time.
Launching Quark, creating file, saving, selected finder, then text editor, the quark.
Quark hangs/freezes until force-quit
it seems there are two issues at hand.
unexpected crashes occur with cmd-tab cmd-q in either Base or New user logins when quark launch was initiated by double-click of file from finder.
and
unexplained application hangs/freezes when under base user.

Should I buy an enclosure for my HD and see if I can get it going externally? Would that be the best way to see if it is the drive and not the cable? An enclosure is cheaper than buying a new SATA cable, so I'm hoping that's where I can start.
Yes. See if the HDD will boot the MBP via a USB connection. You should probably have an external HDD for backups or a possible replacement of your boot drive.

Slow start up with my new dv6-6067ez
Hi everyone,
I just bought a hp Pavilion dv6-6067ez, I followed the steps to finalized the installation/setup of window.
I restarted it several times, in the meantime I did several things to improve the performances (msconfig to disable unessential softwares, uninstalled unwanted programs which were originally installed, defragmentation).
I'm a bit disappointed because it is still slower than my last laptop (which is 3 years old), I don't really understand, I choose on purpose a laptop with quite good specifications (I mean at least to me, for an unprofessional user).
I was wondering whether it would be better to format it, to install window again without these many hp softwares (?)
Thanks =)

PS: sorry for my English, I hope that is clear enough.I think I have figured this out. (Sorry for the typo in the text and heading...)
The blackout at the first 7-8 seconds after pressing the powder button was due my thunderbolt adaptor to ethernet cable. When the adaptor is plugged in (even without the ethernet cable), it delays the start up with just black screen. Not sure if it is a bug, maybe the computer is trying to figure something out when it is plugged in.
The long wait from the white screen and the apple sign screen was due to my sony memory usb key. Not sure if the delay was due to the fact that it is NTFS(windows) format or something else. I need to test it with a mac drive usb to tell. -
C Program Hang-Freeze in usleep
We have a program that intermittantly suffers hang-freezes. Running it in the debugger shows that the C program is calling usleep when it freezes. What kinds of interrupts sent to our application could be causing this?
Thanks,
Art<pre>
Hi,
1. This behavior is known in case your program in MT.
usleep() is MT-unsafe, therefore it can't be used in
programs compiled with "-mt" option. Alternate is to use
nanosleep().
2. If that is not the case, I would suggest you to put the
sample code here that exhibits the problem.
Thanks

win 7; 32 bit OS
Firefox 23.0Thanks for posting back. Glad Firefox continues to work.
Most programs try to do a bit of a cleanup routine as they closedown so it is usually best to close them down properly.
You will presumably have options to make the computer sleep, that needs power; or hibernate, that needs no power but may need spare RAM memory.

No doubt you have already discovered
* You can opt for Firefox starting with home pages or starting with the last opened Windows. <br />Even if starting from home pages the History option usually allows the last open windows and tabs to be reopened
**[[Startup, home page and download settings]]
* If something goes wrong Firefox tries to give you the ''embarrassing'' screen with options to select what opens from last time.

Problem starting HotSync with Antivirus Program in XP
Couldn't start my HotSync program, running XP.
Found that it had to be "approved" by my anti-virus program.
That fixed it.

Ocassional slow start up with Preparing Windows message
I have a new Toshiba C855D Satellite laptop that came with Windows 8.
On about three ocassions now, when I turn on the computer to boot up, it takes a lot longer than usual... then eventually it shows the message "Preparing Windows." After that happens I get on and see my front page/start screen almost empty like it's in a default state with just Toshiba icon and some other few things.
I sign out and resign onto my user name and everything is back to normal.
I think the last thing I did prior to this last incident happening was using Windows Update, then shutting down after it was updated/installed. Could this be related?
What is causing these two issues (long boot time with Preparing Windows message, then the having to sign out and sign back in to access my regular start screen/desktop,etc?
Thanks for the help.Satellite C855D-S5116
So this is an out of the ordinary problem and not some Windows update/Win 8 issue?
We don't know. But a new machine should just work. I returned a Windows 8 machine to Best Buy recently for problems very much like you described.
You don't need another drive. Restore the machine this way.
Settings > Change PC settings > General tab > Remove everything and reinstall Windows

Since I downloaded the Lion, it takes a long time to start up the mini. Anyone knows how to fix it?
It takes around 3-5 minutes. Sometimes, it is faster but sometimes, it stuck for awhile.

Slow start up with Ver 7 ?
Looking up library takes about 10 seconds. SOmething that it didn't do before.
Does having all the album covers uploaded affect this? Cos I never saw it before loading 7 and I never had all the covers before 7 made it easy to download them.
Tom JIt takes around 3-5 minutes. Sometimes, it is faster but sometimes, it stuck for awhile.

Hanging / Freezing problem and slow start up
Problems:
It starts up very slowly
It hang / freeze all the time
More details about the hanging problem:
All the sudden it will stop responding for a couple of minutes, I would do right or left click (via the build in notebook mouse) but nothing would happen. Then after a little while the “Right click” would start responding, but the “left click” would still be hanging, as when you click and hold it (although I am not even clicking on it at that moment). For instance, to clear up what happens:
While I’m on a page using the browser, or using M.S Word, as described earlier it will hang, then if I click the right click it will show the proper list (so at that moment the right click is working), but if I click the left click it won’t respond. And although I take my fingers off the 2 buttons (the built in mouse’s right and left clicks buttons) and just move the mouse (WITHOUT clicking right or left), it will highlight the whole text in the browser or in the Word file and start scrolling up and down. It is exactly as when you click and hold the left click then move the mouse up and down to highlight something, although as I explained above I am not clicking or holding anything, I am just moving the mouse up and down. Plus the left click won’t response / clicks, so if I want to close the browser by left click on the (X) at the corner it won’t click it.
I then press (alt + ctrl + delete), the Task Manager comes up but I can’t end the task because I can’t click left on anything. However, the whole system collapse and all I can do is to wait until the mouse stop hanging and back to response (this takes approximately 15+ minutes every single time it happens).
Technical support:
The first time I called HP technical support, the technician suggested that my hard drive has to be replaced, I wasn’t satisfied with her conclusion. I called again and I spoke to another HP technician, he instructed me to do both (quick test) on the hard drive and it “passed” showing that it is in a good condition. Then he instructed me to do “intensive test” which takes about 3 hours, after 3 hours the hard drive again “passed” but my Windows was damaged! I couldn’t access Windows 7 no more, and when I start it, it takes me to a black screen and requests the Windows CD.
I’ve got all my data in the notebook so I had to recover it but I had no access to Windows to do that, I called HP support again and the technician told me that she can’t help me! I’ve got to find an IT person who can recover the data for me and all HP can do is to send me the Windows 7 CD so I can reinstall my Windows.
As HP won’t help, I went to an IT person who recovered my data and he managed to reinstall Windows on my notebook. Now while I’m still busy installing programs in order to get back up and running, thinking that the problem is resolved, but the same 2 problems I’ve explained above are back, starting up slowly and hanging.
If any of HP technical support team is reading this PLEASE HELP URGENTLY! Could you please arrange a technician to contact me ASAP in order to really figure out where is the problem (is it the Windows, or the hard drive, or the mouse or maybe something else) and arrange the repair accordingly. (I’ve purchased from HP the onsite 3 years care pack warranty).
As I explained above I’ve done as the HP technicians instructed me, yet the problems still exist. I use my notebook for business I can’t afford to stay without pc for longer time, installing and reinstalling my Windows and ALL programs and data over and over again is because of this guessing game. For IP settings of your DCs, I would recommend that you refer to the ones I shared here: http://www.ahmedmalek.com/web/fr/articles.asp?artid=23

Help with Paint program.
Hello. I am somewhat new to Java and I was recently assigned to do a simple paint program. I have had no trouble up until my class started getting into the graphical functions of Java. I need help with my program. I am supposed to start off with a program that draws lines and changes a minimum of 5 colors. I have the line function done but my color change boxes do not work and I am able to draw inside the box that is supposed to be reserved for color buttons. Here is my code so far:

}If anyone could point me in the right direction of how to go about getting my buttons to work and fixing the button box, I would be greatly appreciative. I just need to get a little bit of advice and I think I should be good after I get this going.
Thanks. This isn't in any way a complete solution, but I'm posting code for a mouse drag outliner. This may be preferable to how you are doing rectangles right now
you are welcome to use and modify this code but please do not change the package and make sure that you tell your teacher where you got it from

Hi, I just switched over to premiere CC and have been having trouble with the program monitor freezing up. I am editing R3D files 5k and therefore have the playback quality set to 1/8. But every time I'm trying to scale up the picture, the monitor freezes completely. Everything else works, but i have to restart premiere to get any picture back on the program monitor. Is there any setting i could change to prevent this? Answers are appreciated!
- Espenmy computer configuration details are:
-Its a MAC
-processor: 2.6 Ghz Intel core i7
-memory 8 GB 1600 Mhz DDR3
in the project settings:
-renderer: Mercury playback engine GPU acceleration (openCL)
-diplayformat: Timecode
And I'm have set the scratch disks to an external HD using USB3, could this maybe be a problem?
The strange thing is that everything worked when I Used the Premiere cs6 before i switched to premiere pro CC.
Thanks for the reply Rameez! -

hope somebody can help meNo you can dump alsa and just give a command to run Doom 3. Doom3 was built on using OSS, so its not a proble. It normally detects OSS. To be sure it does run:
doom3 +set s_driver oss
A link:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p= … ostcount=5
with a bit-more. Not sure if doom uses openal, but I had to once reinstall openal to get it to detect oss.

Hello Forum,
I'm currently tuning some SQLs with parameters that run some minutes. When I enter the SQL in the worksheet and press F9, SQL Developer asks for the parameters. But after clicking "Apply" (or whatever it is called in the english version, I'm using german ;-)
I get the elapsed time of 0.018 seconds displayed and the whole program hangs until the SQL is completed. The elapsed time is not updated so I don't get the real elapsed time.
I run SQL Developer against an Oracle 9.2 Database on Win2k. The client runs WinXP.
I hope this is not a double post but searching the forum for "parameters" gave too many hits to check. ;-)
Regards,
dhalekSqldev hangs when issuing an action that requires the previous action to be completed first.
Sqldev could open a new connection for this, or at least display a message telling the action isn't possible until the previous one completes, instead of just hanging. Vote for the requests for this on the SQL Developer Exchange if you want this getting addressed sooner.
Thanks,
K.
