Slow startup related to network issue

Hello,
When my laptop starts up, it goes through everything like it should but when it gets to starting the network it takes a good minute or two. The reason being is it is trying to start an apparent wmaster0 connection. It of course fails. How can I remove this connection? Or at least remove it from start up?
-Ghosty

take a look in you rc.conf file, you may have wmaster0 in you INTERFACES array.
also you could put the network process to start on background (with @network in the DAEMONS array), I've done that before with my old router because the authentication took a minute or so :\

  • PureNetworks Network Magic Significantly Slows Startup in Windows XP

I set up a new hard drive on my laptop. All was running well except during Windows XP startup it seemingly took forever for the wireless services to start up (took approximately 5 minutes after user login for the wireless to work (wired also). I am using WIndows to manage my wireless. I had to turn the PureNetworks Service to Manual from Automatic. My computer startup for wireless access is not almost instantaneous (within 5 seconds of User Login).
Now when I try to use Network Magic (try to open the application, it tells me the service is not running and I have to start it up.
What can be done about having PureNetworks not take so long to have the computer start up if it is set to Automatic?

    Hi peye,
I don't believe the problem is necessary the platform service, but a combination of your Anti-Virus and the Platform Service.
    Try this:
Change Platform to Automatic again. Disable or temporary uninstall your Anti-Virus and see what happens.
    Report back.

  • Slow startup and password issue.

    Hi all...
    Happy new year...!
As a little christmas present for myself I purchased a Crucial M4 256GB SSD for my MacPro 4,1 (2.26GHz, 22GB RAM, 10.8.2). I'm a semi-pro photographer and wanted a bit of a speed up for my processing etc etc. So yesterday I cloned my existing system drive to the SSD with Carbon Copy Cloner. I then installed the SSD in the spare superdrive bay (my other 4 bays are used).
Just as a background my previous startup/shutdown times on this machine where quite slow averaging around 90s for startup and around 45s for shutdown. I had assumed that this was normal and was just a slow syetm HD issue. When I changed the startup disk to the new SSD and booted up the startup time did decrease but not significantly... its now exactly 59s whilst the shutdown times go down to around 30s. In use the speed of the OS is massively improved with applications and local file copying blazingly fast. I've a few friends who upgraded MacBook Pro's and others macs with SSD's and their startups are around 10-15 seconds....!!! I'm not overly bothered by the slow startups/shutdowns but I am curious as to what might be causing these delays. In testing today I deleted everything unecessary from my user account startup items, disabled various apps and checked the /library/startupitems for anything that shoudnt be there. After a couple of hours trying I cant find anything that is effecting the startups and am lost. I'll likely just accept it and move on as in use the SSD is impressive but if anyone has any ideas it'd be appreciated!
A second thing that has happened is that whenever I try to delete/modify/move an app I am now asked to type in my user password. I have tried repairing permissions, checking the permissions of my .Trash folder etc etc but as of yet nothing has worked. Any ideas...??
Many thanks and Happy New Year yet again.
    Richie

The traditional way an Operating System deals with "deleted" files is to remove ONLY the Directory information and simply add the data blocks to the free pool. Those "deleted" data blocks are not cleared.
This works in rotating drives because:
    1. The logical block size is the same or larger than the physical drive block size.
    2. Rotating magnetic media are block-for-block re-writable.
In SSDs physical blocks are much larger "superblocks", and re-writing a portion of a superblock is a slow and difficult read-modify-write operation. In addition, since the OS did not notify the drive what data are no longer needed, deleted data continue to be carefully maintained and re-written by the drive. Soon every write operation becomes a read-modify-write, and performance deteriorates.
In my opinion, this nearly-full condition is likley to cause drive failure. Something more than wishful thinking is required.
Apple enables TRIM on the drives they install directly. They do not do so for third-party drives, but that is likely because those drives have not been tested by Apple.
I have been using a very small SSD as a boot drive for a while, and periodically consolidate free space followed immediately by erasing free space with a third-party utility. I believe this has kept me out of trouble. My son has been using SSD in his laptop and doing nothing for maintenece, and he has killed two drives in a year.
Trim Enabler utility from groths seems to be working, and makes things simple. Your mileage may vary.
if I notice significant performance slips
You added a much lower latency drive and startup times did not improve significantly. Much of the time required for startup is needed for memory testing. The rest is largely attributable to disk Read/Write times. What more evidence do you need?

  • Slow startup issue on MacBook Air running Yosemite

Hi. My mac is starting slowly, taking about a minute. It seems to get held up in the blank screen phase after the power-on self test. It's not a massive issue but is annoying and a solution would be great. Thanks.

  • BootCamp drivers crash Windows 7, slow startup, boot order?, backup drive

I have 3 issues that may be related or possibly not related to each other. I use an iMac (currently with Leopard 10.5.8 on a completely clean installation of both Leopard and Windows 7 on a freshly formatted and partitioned drive).
    Issues:
    1. Before reformatting and installing Leopard and Windows 7, I tried to install Snow Leopard and then Snow Leopard Bootcamp drivers into Windows 7. This crashed Windows 7.
    2. Slow startup of Windows 7 - Drivers needed?
    3. Firewire backup drive never re-mounts after using WIndows and then going back to OS X.
    *Details of issues*:
In the past, before I completely re-installed Leopard 10.5.8 with a new Windows 7, with this same pair of operating systems, I always had a slow startup of Windows 7 on Boot Camp. Sometimes this would take up to 6 minutes to completely open Windows 7. The "Starting Windows" message would appear usually soon, but it would tale a very long time before the Windows logo Flag would appear. The slow startup still continues, even after a complete reinstallation of these on a freshly re-formatted and re-partitioned hard drive (This re-installation was done for reasons shown below).
For a long while I have thought that because I had never installed any BootCamp drivers into Windows 7, then it might start better if I were to install the BootCamp drivers from an installation disk. Thus when I the other day briefly upgraded to Snow Leopard, this time I went ahead while operating under Windows 7 to install into my already existing Windows 7 the set of Boot Camp drivers from the Snow Leopard installation disk. The installation seemed to go well, but it then hung up and never continued when it tried to install the Intel chipset driver. An an hour had passed with no further progress. Thus I force-shutdown the computer, and Windows then never opened until I restarted under safe mode. After that when I would restart Windows 7 "normally", I found also that the Apple wireless keyboard under BootCamp no longer was recognized. The "normal" slow booting of Windows 7 still remained.
Because of I was not sure just what all might have been messed up, and because I am waiting for new versions of several programs that I use to be made as versions compatible with Snow Leopard, I reformatted the complete drive (Both partitions were merged into 1), and then I reinstalled Leopard on a freshly prepared drive, followed by newly installing Windows 7 on a new BootCamp partition. Both systems were fresh installs on a freshly prepared drive and partitions. These were not from clones of the previous installations. This time I did not try to install any drivers from the Leopard disk. The slow booting of Windows 7 continues.
Things I have suspected might cause the slow booting:
    1. Boot order of the Windows partition may be set to look for a CD-ROM before booting from the Windows 7 on the BootCamp Partition. To solve this, I have tried to open the BIOS on startup of Windows 7 in order to set the boot order. I am not sure which function key to press, but in trying several, I have gotten a DOS screen that shows Windows 7 as an option, but nothing else. When I select "Advanced", I get a list that includes "Safe Mode", "Boot Logging", and other items, but not anything for boot order.
    2. The drivers for BootCamp might not yet be made for Windows 7, and I need to wait until these are so that these can be installed. After such, then maybe the slow startup might be fixed?
    3. Possibly my Firewire backup drive interferes (permanently?) with the Windows startup process, because after I use Windows and then go back to OS X, the backup drive (Maxtor OneTouch III firewire drive) will not load on the MacIntosh desktop until I unplug the firewire from both the computer and the Maxtor drive and unplug the power cable to the backup drive, followed by replugging all of this in. (Note: The backup drive is formatted for Macintosh and is never seen as a drive in "My Computer" or in "Network Places" when I operate Windows 7).
Are you able to help/ Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Wilson

    Extra comments;
I also tried the following, which did not fix the startup (*Once up, Windows works well!*):
    1. Checked for file and disk errors (ckdsk?? on startup).
    2. Purged temporary internet and other temporary files (using internet options and disk cleanup utilities)
    3. Cleared out Prefetch files.
    4. Emptied trash.
    5. Under "msconfig", I found 4 items there as startup items. I disabled Adobe Reader and Quicktime helpers, leaving only thus 2 startup items of the 4 enabled (Bulldog and some Microsoft thing).
    6. Defragmented.
    No better results.
    Sincerely,
    Wilson

  • Slow startup/shutdown on WL

    Hi,
We're having a performance issue starting/shutting down weblogic 8.1.1 on Solaris 8 on a Sunfire V240 with 4Gb of memory. it takes an average of 15-20 minutes to start the application using command line start.
Here is some background on the environment:
    A. Start with java args :
    -Xms1536m -Xmx1536m MaxPermSize=128m NewSize=256m MaxNewSize=256m SurvivorRation=8.
    B. There is a cron job that starts/stops then imports at night. The shutdown is also slow, so after 2 minutes of attempted FORCESHUTDOWN, we do a 'kill -9' on the process. My guess is that there is still a transcation that needs to finish ( some are fairly large ), and so FORCESHUTDOWN doesnt complete in 2min.
    C. There are multiple applications on the server, but even if we remove one of them ( the second ), startup/shutdown takes the same time to start. The second app depends on the first, so we havent removed the first one
    D. There have been some database issues as well, running out of database connections. This is due to Connections not being closed, and we are correcting that issue right now, and is not complete.
    E. Most of the time, the logs hang on the last statement below in the logs. However, I don't see any consistency in what follows the BEA-101133 message in the logs.
I apologize in advance for asking more than one item in a post, but I have multiple questions that I believe might be related to the slow startup:
    1. Will running 'kill -9' on the process have an impact on the startup of WL, as it is trying to recover or restore connections or resources?
    2. Once the database connection issues are cleared up ( working on them now), should startup time increase?
    3. Any other suggestions to increase the startup time of WL?

First of all I apologize for the late response, and thank you for the replies.
Here is the WebLogic log file from startup. Note there is a lag of between 10:20 and 11:13. I'm not sure of the cause of this, and any hints or resolutions would be appreciated.
Looks like the slowness is occuring when initializing the web server. Both the Apache web server and Weblogic application server reside on the same machine, so it's not a firewall issue.

  • Very slow startup on 2010 iMac

    Hi
I have a medio 2010 iMac 27" and it's a great computer. Still very fast and plenty of power.
From one day to another though, it started booting incredibly slow. Not that I'm sure, but I suspect to begin from right around the time I upgraded to Mavericks. The boot doesn't seem to get slow until it hits OSX (desktop view). But from here on it takes forever until I can start opening programs. Sure I can click the icons in the dock, but the program doesn't open til loooooong after. It never results in a crash... it just takes forever. I estimate the time from when I press the power button till I can start using the computer is around 10 minutes!!!
Then when it's done with the long startup, it works perfectly. No delay or stall what so ever. Just as quick and powerful as ever.
Of course I have tried many things already:
    unplugging all peripheral devices
    clean up in start-up items
    using CleanMyMac
rebooting from "start disk" in system settings
running controll/repair disk permitions and controll/repair disk from disk utilities
resetting the PRAM (cmd+alt+P+R during boot)
this solution as well: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/10/mavericks-issues-and-fixes/#slideid-23467 1
None of it seems to help. I have been encouraged to try to have someone look at my system startup log from the console to see if anything can be discovered from there. Can anyone help me with this? Or maybe someone has another idea for a solution?!
The system startup log goes like this:

Are you using Boot Camp? If so is your partition NTFS? If so this could be the problem creating a slow startup.

  • IMac and Macbook Pro Networking Issue

Just recently both of my Macs have developed a wierd networking issue.  I am sharing folders on my Windows server (WHS), now this odd slow issue appeared when using a file from the server.  It acts like my network is really slow when opening a file, but my windows machines work fine on it.
I have not made any changes to the server, I am running a Gigabit Cisco network (not linksys) in my home and this thing has got me stumped.  I installed an anti-virus on the iMac and it found nothing.  Either wired or Wireless I see the same results but only related to the Mac's..... does anyone have an idea what might be doing this?  I am kinda a Mac noob in most aspects so I am looking for any help here.

It very well could be the antivirus app, most are intrusive and debilitate rather than enhance performance and should be removed using the developers instructions. You haven't really told us anything useful such as any settting you may have changed. However if you began working backwards resetting any changes and uninstalling the apps added since the performance issue started then you probably will find your issue.

  • Labview exe slow to start over network

I am executing a Labview exe built in version 7.1.1 by running it from a local server in our plant. It takes approx. 50 seconds to display it's front panel. If I run it from my local drive it comes up in a few seconds. To copy the exe from the netwark drive is also quite fast, only a few seconds. I have seen this behavior many times with Labview exe's running from a network drive. Does anyone know why this is happening, and if there is a solution to this slow startup issue?
    Thanks,
    Howard Spec

It's good to know it's not just me that has this problem, and I can run locally since we are doing CRC check on the exe before using it. I would still like an explaination for why this is the case with Labview exe's (or maybe any exe)?
    Thanks,
    Howard

  • Why slow startup loading (55 secs)

Have you had any feedback on LabView 7.0 regarding "slow startup loading" or "slow shutdown"? When I click my icon to start LV 7.0 it takes several seconds (55) to get to the first screen and another 40 seconds to get to the second one. On exiting, the program it normally enters a "not responding" mode. While in the program, it appears to operate normally.

That should be more than enough. I'm not sure how many others have kept 6.1 on with a LV 7 install (there have been a few smatterings of install issues w/ LV 7, most notably w/ network installs). If I was the one dealing with it, I'd uninstall all Labview programs from all versions and do a clean LV 7 install and see if that fixes it (with the idea being that if it doesn't, I'd do a format c:, reinstall the OS and then LV 7, but I like to minimize variables when dealing with it). If you are working in XP or Win2k, you can monitor how much memory is being allocated to LV 7 and how much is free, just to see if that's an issue (ctrl-alt-del and use the Task Manager).

  • How to resolve network issue or dns to access web page on snow leopard server?

I have my network setup like as follows:
    internet > router 1 > ethernet ports > switch > router 2
I have a mac osx snow leopard server connected to "router 1", but it is so slow when accessing a web page hosted on the server from a browser on a workstation connected to either router 1 or router 2?
Is there a problem with my network setup or maybe because I changed the name to newservername.local?

    @Jeff and @Camelot,
I think it is a DNS issue.  I completely reset the DNS settings on server and the local name with the steps below, but now cannot access the site hosted on the server at all
I used a modified version of http://www.mkahn.com/2010/09/configuring-dns-on-mac-os-x-10-6-snow-leopard-serve r-for-hosting/ to reset the server set
    1.  Stop DNS Service in Server Admin
    2.  Close Server Admin
    3.  Obtain 10.6 DNS Default files (below)
    4.  Overwrite the DNS files with DNS Default files:
    /etc/dns/loggingOptions.conf.apple
    /etc/dns/options.conf.apple
    /etc/dns/publicView.conf.apple
    /var/named/named.ca/etc/named.conf
    /var/named/named.local
    /var/named/localhost.zone
    5. Restart your server
All machines have 1ms ping responses within the network including this snow leopard server that I am trying to setup.  There is another test web server that return pages instantly within this network so I doubt it is a network issue, but a DNS issue.

  • Networking Issues after Upgrading to Windows 8.1

I have a Windows 8 desktop PC that is working fine with my network.  I can browse the Internet fine using all major browsers etc.  After upgrading to Windows 8.1 through the Windows Store I noticed that my wired networking was not working correctly.
The status of the network does not change (i.e. it doesn't change to Limited Connectivity) however browsing to sites in Chrome, IE or Firefox doesn't work as well as Windows 8.
IE11 gives me the error "This page can't be displayed, make sure the web address is correct" and other browsers give a similar error.  I normally have to refresh 2-3 times to get a new page to load, sometimes even more.  Everything works
fine from a laptop connected at the same time so it isn't an network issue with my provider.
I thought this might be a driver issue with the two on-board Marvell wired network adapters.   I wasn't able to rollback the driver to older versions I found on the Internet.  I then purchased another network card, Intel Desktop gigabit and the
issue still persists with that adapter.  I then tried a USB wireless adapter and the issue still persists using wifi with the wired adapters disabled.  I tried a new network cable and no luck either.  I also tried resetting the IP stack using
    the various netsh commands.
After that I thought I might try reset the Windows 8.1 PC, however that didn't work as I didn't have the restore image available as I upgraded from the Windows Store.  I then tried installing Windows 8.1 fresh using a ISO with my Windows 8 key using
some of the recent guides that are available.  That all worked but it didn't fix the networking issues.
I re-installed Windows 8.0 and the networking is now fixed and back to working normal again.  I'd like to try again but I think I will have the same problems.  I can't imagine why this would be a driver issue as I tried 3 different network adapters
and two installs of Windows 8.1.  Any ideas what would be the cause of the Windows 8.1 issue?

    HI,
Since this issue only occurred in the your desktop PC, and many network adapters you tried, failed, thus I think maybe we should focus on the model of your desktop PC, I suggest you update the BIOS and chipset from the manufacture to improve
    the performance of win8.1.
Please also test this issue in safe mode with networking.

The issue occurs in safe mode as well under Windows 8.1.  The motherboard is an Asus P5B Premium, however it works on Windows 8.  How would I update the chipset when booted into Windows 8.1?  In Device Manager it wasn't allowing me to update
the network drivers as they were newer versions already installed.
Edit:  I also installed at Intel Chipset Device software dated 8/8/2013 with version 9.4.0.1026 and the issue still occurs.  I am also running the latest BIOS that is available.

  • Slow startup Lion 10.7.3

I've read many threads, here and on other sites, that deal with slow startups. Most of the "answers" seem to be regarding login items, restored windows/apps, etc. But nothing that matches my sequence of startup issues. (If I've missed an answer somewhere, please forgive me...it's difficult to read everything on the internet)
When I power on, the chime sounds within a couple of seconds (normal). But then I get a blank white screen that can last anywhere from 45 seconds to 2 minutes. Eventually, I get the Apple logo and spinny gizmo. Once those appear, startup takes about 10 seconds. I restore no windows or apps and have no login items. Does anyone have some idea for what causes the long delay before the logo appears?
    My Mac is a Mid 2011, 21-inch iMac (bought new 12/2011), 2.8 GHz i7 running 10.7.3, 12 GB mem; 256 SSD main drive has 133 G free, second drive is a 1 T with 872 G free.
    Thanks,
    Michael

    Hi ds
I tried most of the items in the list you referred me to. Nothing found any problems (except the SMART utility errors mentioned earlier).
    Main items:
    - booted from install drive and did all repairs and permission fixes (no problems)
    - reset PRAM
    - the "D" key Apple diagostics (no problems found)
The only thing I did not do was reinstall the OS. It seems to me the delay happens before Lion is loaded. Once loaded, it runs fantastic. It's just that pesky pause before the actual OS loads. I really hope it's not a (partially?) bad SSD.
    Thanks for helping.

  • Lost ability to access iTunes via Airport after Force Quit - Network issue?

I am not sure if this is iTunes or networking related, but all other networking appears ok.
First my setup: multiple machines use iTunes library from an external HD connected to Airport Extreme, OS 10.4.11, iTunes 7.6.2.
I had been updating ratings in the iTunes library on the external drive connected to the AE and I was connected to the AE via Ethernet with Airport Card on PB turned off. I went to move the PB to another location so I turned Airport Card on and disconnected the Ethernet cable with the iTunes app and database open (dumb move apparently). The iTunes app appeared to lock up along with the PB, I was able to force quit thru it, and now I have an unresolved issue that has me stumped.
After numerous restarts of the PB, I can access the iTunes library on this AE server via the ethernet connection (as it was before attempting to move), and all of the ratings I had changed appear to have been saved. But I can not get iTunes to access the library via wireless (Airport Card).
I have restarted the AE and the connected drive both. I have restarted the PB numerous times. If I login on PB with ethernet connected there is no issue, if I login with airport active only there is an issue. All attempts to start iTunes and accessing the library wirelessly result in no success, sometimes can quit normally, sometimes must force quit. I can option start iTunes to access/create library on internal drive and also can create a new library on the external AE server. Also all other wireless networking activity regarding that server has no issue (access , copy, move files etc...)
I've tried removing iTunes pref files in user library and that didn't fix anything. The application itself works fine with the database when connected via ethernet or with internal library.
Anyone have any clues or suggestions on where I should turn to try and fix this? I can try to provide more details if needed, but I am stumped short of potentially aggravating the issue with re installs and other potential attempts that may not even be related to the issue.
    Thanks

No disk maintenance recently. I have a week old backup of the entire iTunes folder along with the Library. I tried moving that backup Library (file only) into the AE server location but that did not change anything in terms of access.
I am on lunch break so no time to try your suggestions immediately, but will later this evening. I had thought about trying with a new user but hadn't gone there yet. I also have a G4 iMac ethernet connected all the time to the AE, but it has a AE card also typically not in use. I tried accessing with the iMac machine wirelessly, and although it progressed further (got the iTunes menu bar to display - never even got that on the PB), iTunes was not able to load which makes it almost seem not machine specific but rather something with the AE settings or the usb connected drive, but again all is fine there via ethernet.
Last night after original post, on the PB, I thought about a corrupted keychain type thing perhaps not allowing file access wirelessly, and I did have something to repair there, but it did not solve the issue.
Again, thanks for the suggestions and I'll try later tonight. Let me know if my additional info sheds any further light or if it would indicate that the suggestions were on the wrong track.

  • IMac running 10.9 not rebooting after network issues

This is weird, and while I am going through Apple's Knowledgebase steps - so far without success - I thought I'd post here to see if anyone else experienced a similar issue.
I was having network issues (or what I think/thought were network issues) for about a week. The symptoms looked like high packet loss, i.e. websites would simply not load reliably: sometimes not load at all, sometimes load partially. This started with some smaller websites and eventually it failed to load google and facebook. It took me some time to notice that  other devices on the same WiFi did not have this issue, so yesterday I decided to reboot my iMac. Network diagnostics didn't show any issue and I was able to connect to the WiFi router just fine, just not find any websites, so I thought a reboot may fix it.
I have not been able to boot it back up since. It stalls at the grey loading screen with Apple logo and a spinning wheel for ever (I've let it sit for hours). Safe boot does not work, and starting in Verbose mode hangs at "executing fsck_hfs" and it doesn't seem to do anything else. I've booted from the install disc (actually a USB drive) and ran Disk Utility from there, but it showed not disk errors at all. It did repair a handful of permissions (I only saw iBooks related stuff and something about etc/apache2/users), apparently successfully, but it's still not booting.
Disconnecting my external Time Machine drive and unplugging the iMac from my surge protector didn't help, either. I am now creating a new image from the partition just to have an additional backup on top of my Time Machine, and I'm going to try Archive and Install next, which is the next to last step in the Knowledgebase.
I do have two partitions on the Mac (one 10.9 and the other 10.7), by the way, and booting into the older partition seemed to work right away. It's just that I don't have any use for that other partition right now, it's a leftover from back when I migrated to Mavericks.
I am baffled how all of this connects together. Network issues, boot up failure without apparent disk issues? Has anyone else seen anything like this?

I am still working on restoring my iMac with 10.9.
I've cloned the affected partition. I used Disk Utility and it Restored without apparent unto an external drive. So I tried booting from that drive, but I get the same result as booting from the partition directly. Not a major surprise I guess since this is supposed to be an identical copy.
I have also created a dmg image out of the partition, and I was able to open that on my MBP without problems! All the files seem to be there. It seems to be something specific with the, uh,  boot sector or, uh, something?
Next, I booted into Single User mode and ran fsck -fy. The Knowledgebase says it's okay to do it if Safe Mode doesn't work, right? The first time it ran, I got conflicting results. It said both
** The volume appears to be OK
    **THE VOLUME WAS MODIFIED**
The Knowledgebase seems to suggest that it should only say one or the other?
    Running it again, it said
** The volume appears to be OK
Alas, rebooting it still doesn't work, it continues hanging at the Apple logo.
