Slow startup, Safari not working
Hello,
I have a new problem with my Imac. The bootup process is very slow, with the background and the dock items appearing quickly but the folders and other desktop items taking a long time to appear. Likewise, when I open Safari the homepage comes up but doesn't connect, eventually ending in the message "server not found". I am definitely in the novice category here. Any help is appreciated. I have not experienced any significant problems in the three years I have had the computer and have kept up with all the updates. I did, however, recently added Office for Mac to my system although I have not used it much as yet.
Thanks in advance!
JD

Exactly which model iMac G4 is it?
Identify it here iMac Model Specifications.
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is available?
How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?
What happened between the last time the iMac started successfully, and when it didn't?
Have you made any changes, like upgrading the system, updated or installed any applications or programs, etc?
Have there been any unusual occurences, like freezes, crashes, power outages, etc?
Have you run Repair Disk & Repair Permissions?
Please advise if you need instructions to perform those operations.
Do you shut the iMac down at night, or let it run 24/7 so the CRON Tasks are run?
If shut down, do you perform regular maintenance routines as suggested in the documents linked to below?

Safari not working on ipad mini
Hello, I can"t seem to get Safari working on my ipad mini. The screen is unresponsive and the text input boxes cannot have any text inputted. I have gone thru the various remedys I have found in this and other forums and nothing has worked. I brought it into an Apple store for a Genius to try and remedy and the inital troubleshooting didn't work. They tried a reboot, reset, and finally a new restore and the results were all the same.....nothing. They then took a brand new iPad mini out of a sealed box and setup that one. Believe it or not, after setting it up the same problem occured on this new iPad mini! So I asked to have my original iPad back as it had a personalization etched on the back but was told it was already swapped out and they couldn't return it to me. So now I have a brand new iPad mini that exhibits the same problem of Safari not working and also the advice from the Genius that in a couple of days Apple will have an update. I haven't seen any updates as yet so I am asking anyone on this forum if they have a solution to get Safari working. By the way everything else on the unit functions, I can surf using Chrome, read emails, etc.
Thank you

Did Safari stop working after you set up your iCloud account? Did Safari work before that?
Have you tried turning off syncing in Settings > iCloud > Safari > OFF?
This solved my question -
Why isn't my back button in Safari not working? I am constantly resetting Safari.

Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari
Move the Cache.db (or ApplicationCache.db) file from the com.apple. Safari folder to the Trash.
Restart your Mac. Launch Safari. Try the back button.

Safari Not working on certain web sites......
There are many sites where Safari does not work correctly.
A example is eBay.com and GoogleBase.com
Where you are trying to enter text in the "sell a item" window.
I have been told by these sites that I need to update to a newer version or Safari.
I am running Safari Version 2.0.4 (419.3) on a iMac G5 2.1Mhz OSX 10.4.8
When I Use Foxfire on these web sites I have NO problem entering text.
Why will Safari not work?
Is Safari to old?
Are the web sites to new?
Thanks
1.5GHz G4 PowerBook & 2.1 GHz G5 iMac Mac OS X (10.4.8)Complying with security standards and complying with web design standards are two entirely different things.
Many web sites don't comply with web design standards - it's an unfortunate fact of life. In a very many cases, it's because the sites are designed to work with Windows Internet Explorer* with no attempt to make sure the web sites work with any other browsers or on any other platforms. Usually that doesn't result in the inability of a web browser to access the site properly, but in some cases it does.
*(In case anyone thinks Windows Internet Explorer should be the standard, this simply isn't realistic, despite possibly sounding sensible on the face of it. Web design standards are based on usability guidelines and and well-researched methods to make web page code more practical, streamlined, and able to be used on a variety of devices and by people with a variety of needs. They're not just a set of rules that can be changed on a whim to conform to a certain web browser's quirky way of rendering sites. Internet Explorer is notorious for not being compliant with agreed upon web standards. Internet Explorer is even inconsistent in how it renders web pages from one IE version to the next, complicating matters even further.) -
I have a Ipad safari not working.
I have a Ipad safari not working, was workingthis am. It goes to web sites but partial greyed out and can not navigate. Other internet connections appear to be working correctly.
Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache and also Clear History
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot. -

After upgrade to 8.3 safari not working
After upgrade to 8.3 on my iPad, safari not working at all, keep saying I got no internet connection, server problem??
If you are not connecting to the Internet, first try toggling OFF your wifi then toggle it back on.
If that doesn't work, Settings-> General->Reset- >Reset Network SettIngs, when the iPad boots back up sign back into your wifi network.
You might also want to reboot your modem/router. -
i have purchase iphone4 from gray market,it is not factory unlock, how can i get it factory unlock,
its safari not working and it is not showing drive in my computer.iPhones are sold in carrier-locked and unlocked versions. If the phone has a carrier lock on it, you must contact the carrier to have it removed (you probably need to bring the phone to the carrier for the process). If you don't know the carrier, you won't be able to get it unlocked. US carriers will not remove the carrier lock and it cannot be removed.
How is Safari behaving that makes you say that Safari is not working? The lock status of the phone won't affect Safari, except that if the phone is locked and you aren't using the carrier (and SIM provided by the carrier) to which it is locked, then you can't use the phone or 3G service, only Wi-Fi.
The iPhone should not appear as a drive on your computer, so there's no error there. -
Slow-link detection not working.
Slow-link detection not working.
In our branch office in Ethiopia we are experiencing some issues with the access to mappings. Our main office is located in the Netherlands. The Offices are connected with a VPN site2site solution.
We map a home folder to H:\ (which is working).
We map a Document share to L:\ (which is not working).
We map a Programs share to X:\ (which is not working).
All shares are DFS namespace.
We have set the according GPO which results in the following reg keys:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\NetCache\SlowLinkParams]
"\\\\DOMAIN.XXX.NL\\dfsdata"="Latency=32000"
"\\\\DOMAIN.XXX.NL\\dfsdata\\Home1"="Latency=360"
"\\\\DOMAIN.XXX.NL\\dfsdata\\Home2"="Latency=360"
"\\\\DOMAIN.XXX.NL\\dfsdata\\ConcernData"="Latency=360"
"\\\\DOMAIN.XXX.NL\\dfsdata\\Programs"="Latency=360"
The detection says in the eventvwr (OfflineFiles) says:
Path \\ DOMAIN.XXX.NL \dfsdata\home1 transitioned to slow link with latency = 106 and bandwidth = 270472
So the Homedrive is working.
But when I try to access the DFS root I get:
Windows cannot access "\\DOMAIN.XXX.NL\dfsdata
You do not have permission to access....."
And yes, the user has permission.
So the L-drive and X-drive are not accessible.
How come?Hi,
>>Slow-link detection not working.
Did we check group policy result to see if the policy setting was applied successfully? We can run command gpresult/v or gpresult/z to collect group policy result.
Besides, instead of just focusing on slow link, this issue may be related to DFS namespace.
Regarding this point, the following blog can be referred to for more information.

Safari not working on iphone5 I have rest my network settings still not working also my gmail is not working
After upgrading to iOS 7 some of the settings on the phone remain from the iOS 6. To resolve the issue you will go to Settings > General > Reset and select "Reset All Settings" that should address the issue you mentioned about Safari and also any other potential incompatibility between the iOS 7 and settings.
Hope this helps. -
Search Google from the URL bar in safari not working, Help...
Hi to everyone,
im stuck here trying to find out why i can't search more in the url bar in safari. Just happened few weeks ago and i most use bing or yahoo.
I did try to delete cache and plist etc, everything i read in the net but still not working. I have mac pro 2011, and I'm not sure but i think this happened after i open a second account for my girlfriend in my mac, so she can have her own account. I check and in the other account happen the same...some ideas? Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
System unresponsive, slow, or simply not working (parts)
Hi, I'm having big troubles recently. I just updated to the latest software updates, but some of the symptoms were there before the update.
First of all, the menu bars doesn't show a lot of my previous icons. Including time, date, and pretty much everything else you have by default (Spotlight is there).
Next, plenty of my applications will simply hang (mostly applications that deals with hardware stuff):
Disk Utility (please take note, even the terminal diskutil will hang, this is important, I'll get back to it later), Image Capture (I plugged in a canon all-in-one I hadn't used for a while, one that I got with the mac) hangs totally, Finder is way too often unresponsive, *exiting a session is impossible, as well as shutting down the mac (no message, simply nothing happens)*, internet access is definetly unusable (way too long lag, too often my browser disconnects or times out note that I use Safari and Firefox).
I tried rebooting the system so it might solve thing, but shutting it down in any way won't work, even for quitting sessions, as stated above.
I then though about starting a whole new system (I was planning this because I wanted to clean up this one too), like the system on a drive, my files on another, backup on another, archives, etc; but Disk Utility hangs (no gui is seen, hangs before it loads).
I also wanted to repairs permissions and fix anything like that, but.. can't use Disk Util. (both GUI and CLI)
Source of problem I think:
Not enough disk space - although I have been using the system with a lower disk space recently, I am now a 4GB free on a 500GB which is WAY below the recommended 15% free space at all time
Fonts - Yes, I have lots of issue with fonts, so using Linotype Fontexplorer X I de-activated all the fonts not listed under "System Fonts" (otherwise I had too much at the same time) but I now see a lot of website using standard fonts with replacement fonts, this sounds bad.
Possible bad updates?
I am thinking of booting up another spare system I have (of course to prevent such problems from turning worse (everyone should have another spare system)) and then start over a whole new system.
Any ideas on how to import files and program (and settings, if possible) in a smart way?
I would appreciate any help because I am currently experiencing a lot of small problem rendering the whole thing useless, if you have any ideas or suggestions this would be really appreciated, thank you!
Edit: I can't even post this a the time of writing. The lag I have restrain me from uploading anything to anyone, and permits very low downloading. I had to save this text somewhere until it finally worked posting.
Edit: I tried adding Menu items in the Core Services folder, manually. Nothing happenned.
Edit: iTunes awfully long to load too. I dare checking any other apps.First step to a cleaner system:
Make way!
OS X needs at least 15% of your startup disk to work proprely.
A lot of experts even in these forum has confirmed this, and this should be a general rule with no exception.
As my startup has 500GB, I'd need to have at least 75GB more or less (more more than less) space free.
Using GrandPerspective , I was able to find out who were the culprits using huge disk space, often without good reason. These including gigantic duplicate backup of older system (old win/unix laptop lying around), copy of DVDs (WHOLE copy, god, oh god why?) which were blottering up all the space.
Other utility of the same genre as GrandPerspective available are: Disk Inventory X (slower than GrandPerspective in my opinion) and TreeSizeMacOSX (a lil awkward to use, not so nice GUI).
These are program that will show off a graphical display of file depending on their size. Huge one are big nice easy to spot blocks, while smaller files are simply smaller square (as for GrandPerspective and Disk Inventory X). I suggest you try out both.
Once you've found the culprit, decide what would be his fate.
As for my DVDs, I am encoding them (high tech quality and encoding, yo!) using Handbrake. If you don't know about Handbrake and need to have some DVDs converted, I highly suggest you try it out at once.
+Remember to only use DVD encoding and copying for your own and personnal use.+
Results?
I have compressed a 70GB disk image to a 45GB using Disk Utility and changing the image type. Oh but since I already had the compressed one, I just made 70GB. Then I am saving at the moment 7,2GB of each DVD, as my final size is 900MB over a 8GB film.
As for my pictures, which are consuming 100GB of my disks, I am currently building (or trying to) an automator action to resize and compress all the picture I feel less confident about keeping, but that I can't get rid off (I'm sure a lot of people gets the same feeling towards picture). This will help reduce by a lot the number of high quality picture really available, as I don't really need a super RAW quality for each shots.
One last note: I recommend always have a spare workable drive, perhaps even with a partition with a system on it. In that case, if you ever need to move huge amount of data, or even your whole system, but your system won't move because of lack of space, a spare disk can come in handy in these moments.
That's pretty much it for disk space cleaning! -
Safari not working with Yosemite- incompatible with google search too
Ever since I upgraded my macbook pro, Safari has been slow. In the past 2 days, it's more than slow - it's impossible. I am able to get to pages I have bookmarked or get to links in email documents - but every time I try to do a search using the search bar in Safari, it hangs. Sometimes I get a list of possible websites (after a few minutes) but if I click on any of those, Safari just hangs there and won't go. I even had to use Chrome in order to generate this question in the discussion groups. Does anyone have any suggestions other than using an alternate browser. Is it possible that google and Safari on Yosemite are incompatible? I did try using the "Develop" menubar option and chose DuckDuckgo as the search tool and it worked a bit better.
This is now the 2nd big issue I've had with Yosemite -- it totally would not work with my Adobe Photoshop Elements program -- I spent hours on the Adobe forums and discovered that 100s of others were also having issues. It turned out to be a problem with Yosemite and the trackpad. Adobe finally came up with a temporary plugin that allows Elements (and other Adobe programs) to run.
Suggesions on Safari other than ditching it and using Chrome?Try a Safari reset.
Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items. Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History and Web Site Data. The down side is it clears all cookies.Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site. -
Keyboard Command in Safari not working
I followed the instructions to set up a keystroke addition to a Safari menu - this was to use Control-C for the Copy Image command in the contextual menu. The problem is, it doesn't work!
If I Ctrl-click to see the contextual menu, sure enough there is ^C next to the command, but when I key Ctrl-click then Ctrl-C, and go to Photoshop, nothing is pasted, the command has not worked. Yet if I manually select Copy Image the usual way (with mouse or arrow keys), it works fine.
What have I done wrong?Hello Christopher,
The problem is not what you've done wrong. As far as I can tell, there's nothing wrong at all.
However, the problem is that when you put a shortcut on a contextual menu, the shortcut itself destroys the context! That's why none of the contextual menu commands you find ever has a shortcut attached. Unless you tell Safari (via a ctrl-click or right-click) what the image is to select, "Copy Image" has no way of choosing which "Image" to "Copy".
No doubt with a lot of programming, the facility could be provided by interrogating the current mouse position. But it would certainly slow down normal processing.
In any case, if you arrange your windows carefully, you can actually drag and drop images from a web page to a blank image document—much faster than copy and paste.
