Slow (stop/start) transfers between networked computers

When I transfer large files from my 2007 iMac to my networked windows computer the file transfer hangs(doesnt transfer any data) for a few minutes, several times during the transfer. A file that usually takes 30 seconds (on tiger) can take 5 minutes as a result. Can be a real pain.
This problems occurs via both WIFI and ethernet cable. It doesnt happen all the time but most of the time.
Any solutions to this?

I am not having stop/start trouble but file transfers between external FW 400 drives seems a lot slower than in Tiger.

  • Can no longer share between networked computers

I recently noticed (possibly just after most recent security upgrade) that I could no longer share files between my wirelessly networked desktop and laptop computers, both running 10.5.8. I have never had a problem before, but suddenly, if I tried to access files from my Intel Macbook using my iMac G5 (PPC), I was told I had insufficient privileges.
After trouble shooting for awhile and resetting prefs and rebooting, I now find I also no longer have sufficient privileges to access the iMac from the Intel Macbook! So I am stuck.
I CAN connect one computer to the other and I can share the printer but, although File Sharing is also checked, and both accounts/computers have Read/Write privileges, little "No Entrance" icons are plastered all over my folders and I cannot drop or transfer files let alone open them.
What is going on suddenly? What can I do to correct this as I really need to share.
    Thank you!
Both have file Sharing turned on and files and File Sharing and Printer Sharing checked. I CAN share the printer, which

    1) PPC can connect with Intel's Test Public folder only (I created a test document but the Documents folder is not even visible). (Intel's User folder is also not visible.)
Are you saying that if you log into the 'Intel Test User' account and 'Connect As' a registered user ie. <test> that your username and password are accepted but once you are logged in you cannot see any of the folders?
In Sharing, file sharing and printing are still checked but the only other option is for DVD/CD sharing - no list of Users who might have access etc.
Are you saying that in System Preferences/Sharing that services like Screen Sharing, Web Sharing etc are missing and that if you select File Sharing that the Shared Folders and Users panes are empty?
    2) Intel can see PPC HD, but the "Connection Failed". In Sharing, file sharing and printing are checked and you can see Intel's users. The main User for that machine is dimmed and has a No Access icon over it.
So you can log into the PPC Mac but when you try to access the HD or open a folder it drops the connection, is that right?
I apologise for all the questions but I am having a little difficulty visualising what is happening here so can't really make any constructive suggestions until I know what we are up against.

  • Transfering between 2 computers through my ipod

i want to transfer songs to one of my computers to another through my ipod. is there a way i can do this? i try to drag the songs i want to the library, but you can't do that. i would really like to know if there is any possible way for me to do that. i would just use a cd, but that is the entire reason for transfering the songs...to burn a cd, b/c this computer does not have a cd burner in it....any info would be GREATLY appreciated!

If the songs are in your iPods library there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

  • Websharing between Networked computers

We have 2 Macs (g4 and g5) networked by Ethernet connection.
A website is published on the one machine and accessible and fine if I open it via Safari from the machine where the website resides.
Filesharing is on in both machines
Websharing is on in both machines
When I try to access computer A (the one with the resident website) from comuter B via Safari by entering the relevant IP address, I get an unformatted version of the website.
If I type in the IP address and full pathway to the index.html file, I get an error message that I don't have permission to access the file. This also goes for the 'Sites' folder as well.
If I check the 'sites' folder and 'index.html' folder themselves, permissions are read and write.
Am I having a permissions issue, or what seems to be going on? why can I access the user file, but not the next two articles in the heirarchy (sites and index file) if they aren't specifically protected?
    Thanks
PS The http port lists as open on computer A

I can't think of ANYTHING in InDesign that would change the font specifications when you move the same file from machine to machine. Style defintions and are file-specific.
Can you show us some screen shots of the style defintion dialogs and some actual text on two different computers where this is happening?
And tell us which version of ID and OS, please.

  • File transfers between two 10.9 Macs over FRITZ!Box AVM 7270 painfully slow, any ideas?

I am using a FRITZ!Box AVM 7270 as my WLAN Router and Internet access point.
Internet download rates are excellent (6 MB/sec), e.g. iTunes HD trailer playback starts immediately. However, local WiFi file transfers between my two Macs (2011 MB Air, 2012 Mac Mini Server) are embarrassingly slow. I typically see 60 kbit per second (even when no other transfers, up- or downloads occur). Copying just one 50 MB PDF from one Mac to another takes ten minutes.
The FRITZ interface shows that both Macs are connected using 802.11n (104 Mbit/s), signal strength is good.
I first suspected a problem with Apple's AFP protocol that was mentioned in several forums. But in the meantime, I have upgraded both Macs to Mavericks, which uses SMB as default. But even connecting via SMB "smb://mac1.local" has the same results: Dead-slow transfers. Activity Monitor shows some peaks at 150 kb/s when transferring files, but it's almost dead in between.
The problem occurs when copying in both directions (Mac Mini <> MB Air).
    Any ideas?

    I think you're right!
    Thanks for the tip!:-)

  • How to stop any photo transferring between Mac and iphone

how to stop any photo transferring between Mac and iphone ?

This is a possibility. But please be aware using your Mac to emit a WiFi connection is a temporary solution. And it will get a short range unlike an actual WiFi Router. Also you may find it to be unstable at times. The Airport Card in your Mac was not designed to be a full time Router WiFi emitter. But more of a receiver to get the signal and use it for personal use.
    1. Unlock the network on your Mac make it an open network
    2. Go to your iPhone, Settings-Wireless-Tap on blue circle next to network name, Choose Forget network
    3. Now go back, It will rescan and find an open network, Connect, and see if Safari works
If Safari works, Then you had a Security issue. Try using WEP 128 bit 13 character passkey or WEP 8 Character Passkey.
    Cheers and best of luck

When was the last time you did any of the following?
    Restart your computer?
Repaired Permission & restarted your computer?
Run "Repair Disk" from your install DVD?
Please detail all you have done to resolve your issue.  Need this information so that the users can avoid the "been there, done that" scenario type responses.  This is to avoid repeating the troubleshooting you may have already tried.  Thank you.

I need to make a stop start animation using iMovie. I need the time factor to be 0.03. Every time I make an adjustment it goes to 0.1s which is too slow. Does anyone have a suggestions?

First, for Stop Motion Animation, there are better tools. These include iStopMotion and QuickTIme Pro Version 7.
If you want to do it in iMovie, it is possible, but slow.
First, go into iMovie Preferences, and make sure you check "Display Time as hh:mm:ss:frames". This will let you edit to the frame lever rather than to the nearest 10th of a second.
Second, see this Tutorial by Jon Walker on how to edit down to a single frame in a still image sequence.
You can modify his technique to get 2 or three frames.

  • Transferring songs between family computers

My wife and I each have an imac. I have transferred all of our cd's to my computer. Is there a simple way to copy those imported cd's to her computer as well? Can I copy my purchased songs to her imac? Will itunes import duplicates or is there a setting when importing?

I need step by step instructions to set up Remote Desktop between 2 computers on 2 different networks. Please dumb it down for me.

I need to do the same, but with more than one computer behind a dynamic-IP NAT:
    OS X Server A -|
                   |
OS X Client 1  |- NAT Router Fixed IP ---|
                   |                         |
    OS X Client 2 -|                         |
                                             |
    OS X Client 3 -|                         |
                   |- NAT Router Dynamic IP -| Internet
    OS X Client 4 -|                         |
                                             |
    OS X Client 5 -|                         |
                   |- NAT Router Dynamic IP -|
    OS X Client 6 -|
I have ARD installed on Client 1 and Client 3 (different locations where I'm at) and I need to manage Client 5 and 6 (and the others, but that amounts to the same problem). Since there are multiple computers behind the NAT, I cannot just patch a port through. I want a secure solution as the traffic goes via the internet.
I have been thinking about letting the users of Client 5 and 6 set up a VPN link to the NAT Router of Client 1 when they need assistance, but when I want to manage this from Client 3, all traffic goes over two VPNs, let alone if the router at Client 1 can manage this in a stable way.
Probably, two assignments in the router of client 5 & 6 would be nice, but can I tell ARD to use different ports for certain machines?

  • Ethernet crossover cable to network between two computers

I have an ethernet cable which i want to use to network between 2 computers. How do I know if it is a so-called "crossover" cable?
The cable has the following written on along its length:-
    "FTP CAT.5 100MHz 26AWGx4P PATCH TYPE CM (UL) C(UL) CMG E164469 - ISO/IEC 11801 & EN 50173 3P VERIFIED"
Thanks in advance for your help.
    iMac G4 flat panel 15inch   Mac OS X (10.1.x)   (running OS 10.1.5)

I'm no expert, but the details you wrote include the words Patch Type." To my limited knowledge, I think that there are two basic types of these cables, "patch type" and "crossover." So I'd guess yours is not a crossover. I've had a hard time finding crossover cables in the past (but have not gone looking for one for some time) and so have simply wired my own. Home Depot or Menards have cable and crimpers, and the instructions are really easy to follow overall.

  • Sync Mail between two computers

After Leopard upgrade, I switched from Entourage to Mail.app, so I'm new to it.

May I use a sync app like Folders Synchrnonizer?
    Thanks
    Stefano

Both my wife and I have multiple macs and work at home and on the road - we've tried all sorts, and there are 3 approaches that work:
    1) IMAP
I know you think this isn't the ideal solution for you, but it is unbelievably simple and rock solid once you get it working.
Set your POP mail addresses to forward all mail to your IMAP address (I use .mac which is brilliant, I don't know about Gmail).
Your mail is server based, so your laptop, desktop, iPhone, webmail from a PC etc. are all always in sync.
You will still get your mail from your old accounts.
You can set rules on any of your machines to filter your mail into folders according to which address they were originally sent to.
HOWEVER the mail you SEND will be FROM your IMAP address, so your clients / friends may get confused if you don't want them to use your IMAP address as your main address.
    2)
Leave POP mail on the server.
In Mail preferences, highlight your POP account and click on the "Advanced" tab.
Select "Remove mail from server" to a 1 day if you come home each night.
If you are away for longer, make it 1 week or Never.
This way, if you download mail on your Laptop, when you get home that evening, your desktop will download the same mail again, as it has been left on the server.
    It's sort of fake IMAP.
The downside is you can end up with a full mailbox at the server very quickly as you are now leaving messages on it, and you may have to empty the server yourself sometimes (in the same menu you just adjusted).
Also, if you are away from your laptop too long, you may download and later delete-from-the-server messages on your desktop, leaving your laptop out of date.
Use Mac Sync to keep your rules, mailboxes and preferences synced up.
This is the way it's designed to work, so it should work fine.
    3)
    Drag the Mail folder.
Assuming you're only using one Mac at any one time, you simply move the main mail folder to whichever machine is current.
    Quit Mail on both machines.
On your target mac, go to youruserfolder/Library and rename the "Mail" folder to something else like "Mail Old". This is just so you have a backup.
On your source mac, go to youruserfolder/Library and copy that entire folder (not just the mailboxes) either to a drive to transfer to your target mac, or straight to it if you have it networked.
When you start up mail you will find the messages, folders, mailboxes etc. are the same as they were on your source mac.
Now you use your target mac (say your laptop) for a while.
When you are going back to your original source mac (e.g. your desktop), you now repeat the process in the other direction, replacing your desktop's mail folder with your newer laptop's version.
It's really important you use one mac at a time and swap the folder each time you switch.
If you rename the previous version before you overwrite it, you know you have a backup if things get out of sync.
It works really well if you only take the laptop out occassionally, or if you use it exclusively for days at a time (i.e you go away) and you only need to do the transfer every so often.
Also, it helps if you don't have thousands of emails - if your Mail folder is under half a gig, you can do this quickly using a USB keyring or similar. Any bigger and the transfer can get a bit slow.
I use option 1, and felt it was worth changing my email address for.
My wife uses option 2 when she is using her laptop in the day and she can run her desktop each evening the download the mail left on the server.
But she sometimes gets trouble with her popmail server filling up (she gets lots of video and audio attachments) so if she's going away or not planning to use her desktop in the evenings, she reverts to option 3 and removes messages from the server "right away", updating her desktop's mail folder at the end of the week and just using her laptop until then.
    Good luck!
