Slow streaming

Anyone having problems streaming video from iphone4 to apple tv. The video buffers for minutes before playing, if I'm lucky.

Christoph
Hope you don't mind if I ask a network question not entirely related but possibly so!
I have an Intel iMac and Intel Macbook
iMac connected via ethernet to a netgear pre-N ADSL modem/router. Internal airport disabled.
Macbook connects via wireless with 'patch' to allow the 'extreme' functionality of the card purchased from Apple and installed.
I use the Macbook to pull MPEG2 transport streams of terrestrial broadcasts off a Topfield hard disc recorder. Once these files are on the Macbook I have frequently tried to transfer them via wireless networking to the iMac for processing and conversion for the AppleTV.
The problems I have are two-fold:
- transfer speed is extremely poor even with all bars on the signal strength indicator showing
- files frequently don't transmit in full and the Macbook hangs
Do you guys know if there are any limitations to wireless file sharing/transfers or Finder glitches that might explain this?
Any pointers to good resources on secure wireless filesharing between Macs on an intranet.
As I say this may be unrelated, but if everyone sees very slow data transfers and the Airdisk functionality is based on similar core Mac OS comms software or Bonjour or something, could this be a rate limiting factor?
Cheers

  • Incredibly slow streaming of video from macbook pro to apple tv

Hi.  We purchased an apple tv 3rd generation connected to wifi.  our internet runs about 7mb/sec.  no problem streaming movies purchased on itunes through apple tv but ridiculously slow streaming mp4 through itunes to apple tv over macbook.  when i say ridiculously, not even sure if it works... just seems to think about it.   home sharing is enabled on both devices.  i know they are communicating because i can play my music library on the tv (which is also pretty slow).  am i missing something?

Home sharing is done over the local network so internet speed wouldn't play a factor. I would be inclined to think it is specific to the videos you are trying to share.
Have you made sure they are compatible with the Apple TV?
H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High or Main Profile level 4.0 or lower, Baseline profile level 3.0 or lower with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats

same problem here. videos are basically unwatchable on my iPod touch 4g. a 3 minute video takes 10 mins to load, while the player slowly skips through playback. the real annoying part is that if I just put it down to let it load when I get back the YouTube app has gone to the comments screen and deleted the buffered video so when I go to watch the video again it has to re-download the video ( it does not seem to download at all if the player is paused) meaning I have to sit there for 10 mins, pause when it is almost done and seek to the beginning to watch. just stupid.
thing is if I go to my desktop everything works fine... I click play and the video plays with no stuttering. I have a decent Internet connection, and I know my ISP does no throttling. seriously what's up with this? is YouTube purposely slowing streaming to mobile devices?

  • Slow Streaming Periodically

It seems most of the time AppleTV works great, but for some reason it just has a day or two where it streams everything at very slow speeds. Perfect connection, nothing out of order, in fact it worked perfectly the night before. Wake up, slow streaming, Hulu and YouTube. Every other device in my house works perfectly with those sites, please assist.

Have you verified speed during those times? Have you checked for interference? Are you using the ISP's DNS? If on wifi have you tried ethernet?

  • Slow Streaming - Local Files (Video ) only

I'm trying to pin down this slow streaming and excessive buffering problem:
Apple TV 2nd gen - updated to latest software - operating wirelessly
    Fios Actiontec Router
    PC quadcore intel (fast)
Everything else seems to be working fine, photos, internet streaming, etc. But when I try to stream local video files, it is extremely slow (if it starts at all)
I have just run a test and Netflix and Youtube are blazing fast to load and then play long videos.
I have just tested it with 2 new videos in my Itunes Home Video folder:
The orginal is an mp4- 258 MB with a 5.75 bitrate
I actually also converted this via itunes to a m4v file for testing purposes
Both files are extremely slow if they load at all.Virtually unwatchable.
The same file (mp4) uploaded to youtube and played through the YouTube app plays almost instantaneously.
Could this be some router setting? Or is this all I can expect to get,
    Is there some other fix?
    Thanks

It likely has to do with the encoding. Local streaming is done over the local network. Try converting with handbrake.
Here are the supported specs for ATV

  • HT4352 slow streaming from itunes to apple tv 3

I am experiencing slow streaming from itunes to apple tv (latest gen). My itunes library is found but when the music begins it stops after 2 seconds then restarts etc etc. It seems like it is streaming slowly from itunes. At first it appeared the firewall was the problem but this has been eliminated. Any one have the same problems or know of a solution?

    Hi,
I had this problem both between Mac itunes library and Apple TV and Windows 7 Itunes Library to Apple TV, I disabled IPv6 on both my mac and windows machine, fixed the ip on all my devices. I also disabled windows firewall on my windows machine (I have an external firewall so not needed) you may not want to do this. From my windows machine it would play a few songs, then start one at 7 seconds and not play audio. From my mac it would say connecting to itunes library with the wheel.
These are the things I believe to resolve the issue, I also disabled a tonne of windows services (iphelper, Windows media streaming)

  • Slow streaming on ATV2

Is anyone else experiencing slow streaming from the iTunes store via the ATV2?

FYI -- Some pointers of potential use:
    1) Found WiFi was 8 MBsec in this room so reconfigured router and get 21 Mbsec, helps on streaming
Supposedly altering Multicast rate can sometimes help too.
    2) ATV2 software updates turn OFF Home sharing each time.
Not seen this but Home Sharing seems more flaky than the older 'pairing' with iTunes.
    3) Use of cordless landline phone knocks out ATV2 streaming every time.
You've clearly identified a local source of RF interference - my microwave used to do this until I moved it.
    4) Occasional break up in music stream over WiFi.
Your wi-fi sounds as though it's flaky affected by interference - it could be a faulty AppleTV 2 wi-fi card - have you asked Apple to replace if the older one worked fine?
Anecdotally my ATV2 has lower signal strength on wi-fi compared to an AppleTV 1 in the same location.

  • Apple TV Gen 2.. Terribly Slow Streaming From Wired Home Network via itunes Windows 7. Please Help

Hello all, I just signed up for this as i hope to get more results from here than i did waiting 4 hours for a call from apple today.
I recently purchased an Apple TV Gen 2.. installed it on my Samsung 40" HDTV via HDMI cable and also ran a network cable to my basement where my router, (Linksys 5 port router plus Wireless) is mounted on the wall beside the cable modem.
just to rule things out i will give some spec's and details before i get further into this.
My goal is to use my Desktop Homebuilt PC running windows 7 ultimate 64bit to store my Digital Movie Library and stream through itunes all of my digital media to my Apple TV located in another room. Both Apple TV and my desktop windows 7 PC are hard wired NOT WIRELESS.
My internet connection is cable and tested it this evening several times at  58.9 Megabits per second down and 8 Megabits per second down... (yes that is correct 58mb/s down. this equates to about 7.1 megabytes per second download speeds for reference.
Now just to rule out my 2 year old wireless router i went and purchased a brand new router today... Same results.
Now on to the problem details and my findings.
Using my Desktop PC wired to try and stream Itunes movies from the streaming is absurdly slow.. very slow... i have yet to wait to see what happens after 30 minutes of waiting for a Movie to start.. music also takes a long time to load...
Music... i can go to icloud funtion which i paid for today.. and click on the same song in icloud and the song starts almost instantly, so does music videos...
Also previously purchased TV shows starts playing from the cloud almost instantly as well even HD TV shows...
Trying to stream anything through my desktop windows 7 pc just doesnt work right...
I have narrowed this problem down to my desktop.. but can not figure out what the problem is...
using my macbook air 120GB SSD wireless over the same network, which i also have a mirrored copy of my itunes library for testing purposes... there is zero issues with streaming anything from my macbook air over the same network via wifi...
Also using my ipad 2 mirroring works flawlessly, even HD movies plays without a hitch... same goes for my iphone 4s
the only issues i am having are with my desktop and streaming from my itunes libary on it... i do not want to use my macbook air.. as that defeats the purpose of having apple TV.. in the future i plan on ripping my entire DVD / Blueray collection to a 3 TB hard drive and stream to my AppleTV...  from my desktop computer storing my entire DVD / Blue Ray library digitally on the 3TB hard drive....
But i can not get this to work...  i can see my itunes libary on my desktop.. i can play music and watch movies.. other than anything HD will not play... but everything takes a rediculously long time to load... i can download an entire movie with my 58mb's connection in the time it takes to load something streaming from my itunes libary on my desktop PC...
if anyone has any suggestions.. there may be something i have overlooked or i am missing. any input and or advice will be greatly appriciated.
    Thanks,

Ok.. in order to help other users i will post this..
I have resolved the issue... it was rather simple and dumb...
I never use windows media player ever.. i do not like it and can not stand it.. because in my case it was a brand new windows installation this fix will only apply to certain users..
because it was a brand new windows installation.. i had never clicked on windows media player.. apparently streaming settings are embedded into windows media player for the windows 7 OS...    in past installations that i have used for years.. i simply never ever clicked on windows media player, as i never had a reason to.. i use itunes for my ipad, iphone etc.. etc...
by accident and shear luck i decided to click on windows media player.. and of course go through the express settings....  after i did this all of my streaming problems to my apple tv gen2 disapeared... HD movies now start almost instantly... so as i stated above apparently there are media streaming settings embedded into the OS through windows media player... doesnt make any sense to me as i never use the program.. but whatever that fixed my issue..
so for any of you windows 7 people out there using a windows 7 pc as your itunes sync computer and using that itunes library to stream to your apple tv... make sure you have done the initial setup at min.. of windows media player.. i still left itunes as my default player....  everything now works flawlessly... infact for whatever reason.. even in an HD movie my network almost has half the movie synced now accross the bar before the movie starts so now my apple tv is blazing fast....
i have been struggling with this for 2 days now and simply never gave it a thought that windows media player would ever have anything to do with itunes streaming a totally seperate program.. but it did..
i hope this helps other people with similar problems.
    good luck

  • Slow Streaming From Time Capsule to Apple TV

    Hi,
I have several movies and tv programmes stored on my Time Capsule..... When I stream from the time capsule to Apple TV it is very slow and is constantly buffering. How can I get around this as at present the films / programmes are un-watchable.
    Thanks
    mbchunky

Thanks for describing your current network configuration for streaming.
In your current setup, QuickTime will first have to access the media files from the TC over a wireless connection. From there it will send the stream back to the TC. The TC will then send the stream to the Apple TV. As you can see there are a number of potential Wi-Fi interference issues along this overall path. Interference is not just from other Wi-Fi operating nearby, but also includes microwave ovens, portable phones, baby monitors, etc. Very importantly, it also includes the type of building material used along the path the wireless signal must travel through.
I would suggest that you do a bit of testing to determine what exactly the data throughput you are getting. Once you understand those values, we should be able to determine where the bottlenecks are and try to eliminate them if possible.
Please take a look at the following AirPort User Tip for details on taking throughput measurements.

  • TS2972 Slow streaming home sharing

In my configuration, I purchase and download TV shows on to my Mac mini. I then stream to my iPad or APple TV using Home Sharing. Everything was working fine until I upgraded OSX on the Mini. Despite all my devices being on the same network and all having HS enabled and logged in to my Apple ID, I couldn't get anything reconnected to the mini.
I was finally able reconnect following innumerable restarts and disconnecting and reconnecting Home Sharing. Works fine on the Apple TV but iPad is still impossibly slow....ANY ideas?? I had no idea Apple products could be this difficult?!!?

I figured it out...I switched to 5ghz in AirPort Utility under wireless options.  No issues now, and I'm running twice as fast as before.
Should have thought about it before I asked.

  • Slow streaming over wifi using ipad

Why is streaming over wifi slower than over cellular connection?  Other devices don't have the same issue.

generally we all think and expect wifi will be faster than a cell connection.  But that will not always be the case.  A good uncongested LTE runs pretty fast.
But the wifi should be fast enough that you wouldn't notice any issues unless:
You are using a public wifi spot where the signal is metered.  Where I work, they clamp the wifi for guests at 250k.
The wifi cannot run any faster than your internet connection.  Is it clean?
Recent stoires here are explaining how verizon and Comcast have been allowing you tube and netflix feeds to become overcongested, in an effort to extract $$ from them for the privilange of sending you the signal.
a good place to start is to get a speed app - like Speed test (there are a bunch in the store) and see what speed your wifi is delivering.
One thing that is almost certain, your wifi is a whole lot cheaper than your cell signal!

  • Strange slow streaming and syncing problem - any diagnostics?

I have two Apple TVs syncing wirelessly via an Airport Extreme with an iMac and one of the ATVs has begun behaving very strangely. I've rebooted my ATV, and even gone back to it's factory settings (2.1) and updated it to the latest firmware again without success. iTunes is version 8.1.1, but I had the same trouble with recent version of iTunes too. The problem ATV used to work fine with iTunes.
Syncing has been intermittent and iTunes frequently 'loses' my problem ATV2. Restarting iTunes will usually find it OK, but sometimes I have to go into my ATV2 settings and re-select the Airport Extreme and input my security password again before it's recognised by iTunes.
Even when iTunes does 'see' ATV2, the syncing has been extremely slow. The display of 'Top Movies' thumbnails has also been very sluggish. Playback of movie and podcast material from my iMac / iTunes library has also ground to a halt. For the most part I just stream from the iMac, and have most settings for ATV2 set to e.g. 'sync selected Movies'.
But even when I've selected items to sync with ATV2 the syncing is very slow. Today a 200 MB .m4v file took about 18 minutes to copy across to my ATV2. Once it had transferred across it played fine from the ATV2, with none of the stop/start problems I'd had when streaming from iTunes.
My Airport extreme is in the same room and about 12 feet from ATV2. My ATV1 is in a nearby but different room, and works fine, even though it's further away.
Is there any way I can diagnose the cause of this issue, or does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem might be? I presumed that a factory reset removed all settings on my ATV2 but is there a more extreme reset I could have done?
    Thanks.

I can offer at least a partial reply to my own question.
I found lots of messages suggesting problems with the more recent firmware upgrade of Apple's Airport Extreme. So I downgraded from 7.4.1 to the older version 7.3.2 and afterwards my sluggish syncing and playback issues seemed to be resolved.
The file that took around 18 minutes to sync before now does it in about two minutes, and playback of files is normal. Don't know yet how well the older firmware will hold onto my ATV2 but I suspect all those issues were related and hope that will be fixed too.
If there are any downsides I'll update here.
Incidentally I forgot to mention that my ATV1 which had no problems with the Airport Extreme was an earlier model 1.x with updated firmware, whereas the problematic ATV2 had the later 2.x firmware, updated to 2.3.1. Both appear to be working fine now.

  • Apple TV3 not working - Can not connect to iTunes, Very, very slow streaming. Help please?

For just over a week I have been unable to stream film/TV shows from Netflix via my Apple TV. When I have been able to, the streaming is painfully slow... for example, to watch a half hour program I have had to pause it at the beginning and leave it for 30-40mins before I can watch it and even then i'm not guaranteed to be able to watch it all! On top of the streaming issues, I tried to purchase a film from iTunes via the Apple TV - this took 3days to download!! Then finally, last night, it all seemed to stop working - will not connect to iTunes account at all (can not connect to server). I have checked again this morning and the error message says the same thing. My internet connection is fine (perfect on both mac, dell laptop and iPhone. I have tried the obvious troubleshooting methods - nothing has helped.
Can anyone please tell me whether this is an internal Apple issue and if we know how and when this will be resolved? Or has anyone else had the same problems and been able to resolve them?
    I'm pulling my hair out...

This would be an issue with your network. Netflix will constantly adapt to your connection. iTunes content is fixed, will cache as you watch, and will need to load a portion before playback begins. As you have not provided information on what you have tried, I will list common things to check.
What is your current connection, via speedtest.net
Make sure DNS is set to auto (settings - general - network)
Make sure router is up to date, if on wifi try ethernet
Go to istumbler (Mac) or netstumbler (PC) to get a report of the network, look for signal strength and noise

  • Choppy/Slow streamed videos on both Firefox and Chrome

I have a 2010 Macbook Pro that was recently turned off for two weeks while I was on vacation. When I turned it back on and tried to watch videos online (youtube, Netflix, streamed videos) the videos are choppy and slow to load. This was never a problem before turning of the computer for the two weeks. I have tried both Google Chrome and Firefox and the problem happens on both. When viewing the Activity Monitor while attempting to watch the videos the CPU usage is fine for the first 20 seconds or so and then Chrome or Firefox take on 80-90-over 100% of the CPU usage, a majority of the usage is from the system (in red) and the videos become untwatchable. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both browsers and have disbaled all the extensions. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Silverlight for Netflix and have uninstalled all unused versions of Adobe Flash player. There are no problems with video when I watch a DVD. Help! I want to watch videos again

having same problem since mac os x 10.6 upgrade, but was never issue prior... have tried everything i can think of, new flash players, reinstalling players, reboots of computer and router... to no avail. since this was never an issue for me prior to upgrading to Mac OS X (10.6.8), i believe its the os software.

  • Slow streaming video

    Dear All
I have recently added a number of video tours to our companies website via iweb. They stream well in the morning but then later on in the afternoon (4-6pm GMT) they slow right down and take a while before the video will start streaming.
    http://web.mac.com/dorsetdc/Corben&_SonVideos/Thatch.html
I have tested my broadband speed and that does not seem to alter. The grand speed of 2mbs seems to be fairly constant (i know its a snails pace but that "Great" Britain for you)
Could it be that a lot of people are trying to view the same video or does apple's servers slow down at certain times?
I would be grateful if anyone has any ideas or could point out something i am doing wrong.
    Kind regards
    DC

You broadband speed is always the same.
It's probably the server at Apple.
6PM GMT = Early morning to noon in the USA.
So everybody starts editing and publishing their iWeb pages. And then the whole internet bogs down.
We just have to live with it.
