Slow system and odd startup icon

If I'd only changed one variable at a time then I'd probably not be asking this question... but since I changed so many here goes:
About the same time as upgraded to 10.4.8 I added a third internal drive (first one in the slower drive area near the front of my MDD G4) and installed the newest iLife suite.
My system has slowed down amazingly... just trying to activate Finder to look at a file list, changing an active selection from Mail to Safari, opening most any app... causes a 5 to 10 second spinning beach ball.
My only clue is a momentarily new symbol when I restart the CPU: Prior to the launching of the normal Apple screen I see a small folder that alternates with a question mark for just a second or two. Then startup proceeds normally. I thought that icon was for a problem finding the startup drive, but I've not changed where the system resides or that drive at all.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated,
Pat

Did you also update your iLife apps and QuickTime? And did you repair permissions? Two things to do to see if you can find the source of the slow down:
1. Create a test user using System Preferences->Accounts. Leave the test user basically as it is created, don't add contextual menus, menu extras, fonts, nothing extra. Try logging into the test user and see if the responsiveness is back to normal. If so the problem is something in your usual account rather than a system level problem.
2. Try launching Console from your utilities folder and leave it running in the background. Are you getting any odd error messages?
Also check to see if the drives are set to sleep when possible, make sure the check box is UNchecked in System Prefs->Energy Saver. Usually though the slow down when that is checked is intermittant rather than constant.

  • Slow system and application startup times

    Hi,
I've got a 17" Macook Pro (Early 2011) 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 - ever since I bought it I feel like it runs a little slow.
I've been a long-time mac used but I feel a little disappointed with this machine.
e.g.: Startup time takes around 4 minutes.
Applications take around 10 seconds to start.
Chrome sometimes takes 5-10 seconds to start, about the same to quit.
My Xbench scores fluctuate wildly - best I've ever got is 220, worst is 18. 160 is about the average.
    http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc2=526647
    http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc2=537725
    http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc2=544252
I feel that tried everything including:
    - Creating a new user
    - Repairing disk permissions
    - DIsk verify and repair
    - Removing all startup items
    - Installing extra ram (currently at 8GB)
It runs well most of the time but frustratingly slow sometimes and there doesn't seem to be any anomalous activity in activity monitor. I feel that it could be the hard disk, but don't know (I always have 250-350gb free).
    Any help appreciated!

Thanks for the link. I've never seen that page before but I have done everything in that list.
It's not a spinning beachball issue - the system doesn't lock-up often it just takes a **** long time to do some things. I didn't really realise it as a problem until I started using other people's older/lower spec'ed macs and noticed that they run FASTER than mine.
Activity monitor pics - just after a restart with my usual apps running:
    CPU https://skitch.com/e-hellodaniel/83pq5/activity-monitor
    Memory https://skitch.com/e-hellodaniel/83pq7/activity-monitor
    Disk https://skitch.com/e-hellodaniel/83pxg/activity-monitor
Even using Skitch to take those screenshots took ages.
It's almost like the disk or CPU is throttled back or bottlenecked, and always has been...

  • Installed OS X Maverick on Macs...having problems slower system and apps freezing

I installed and downloaded OS X Maverick last week and installed it in relatively new Macbook Pro and IMac...both purchased last year...have experienced applications freezing, slower start up time several times, once was unable to start my Macbook Pro...had to reboot..and slower system response...anyone else experiencing the same?

Checked to see how much space is available ??
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage. Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
As for slow startup, delete all apps in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items
Same for HD > Library > StartupItems
Anti virus software can slow your Macs down if installed.

  • Slow system and plist

My system started slowing down and having gone through the forum,I deleted the plist list files. On deleting the files, I discovered that my settings have changed and has deleted my emails! Can I restore the settings and my emails?

    HI,
Deleting the Safari .plist file has not effect on your e-mail.
Can I restore the settings and my emails?
You can restore from a backup using TimeMachine.

  • Slow System and cost to take to local store

    Hey All,
My system has been running slow recently and I'm not sure why.  I was thinking of taking it to my local store but do they charge a huge fee to help?

    FaithPlatform wrote:
I would recommend you use a Anti virus software to scan for any virus, is there is no luck with that, personally (I am saying this because it's what I would do) I would backup any/all important documents and run a fresh install of OS X Yosemite.
Please, nobody follow this horribly bad advice!
Malware is almost never the cause of performance issues on a Mac, while anti-virus software often is the cause. Further, if this one thing didn't help (which it wouldn't), it makes no sense whatsoever to jump straight to reinstalling the system! There are many other things that should be tried first, such as removing certain kinds of third-party software (anti-virus being one of the top candidates), checking for low RAM problems, checking for problems due to insufficient hard drive space, etc.
Buckeyes1205, Apple's techs should be able to help you. If you're not able to get in to the Apple Store right away, though, you could download EtreCheck, run it and then post the report it generates here. That will give us more information about what's going on with your system, and we can give you some real suggestions for how to fix it.

my mac book pro load system but not shows icons only show pointer

Can you open Applications by navigating to the Applications folder via the Finder? When you write that your computer doesn't show icons, do you mean your Dock icons? Can you see the Dock as all?
Need just a little more information...

  • Odd startup icon and issue

When I started my relatively new MacBook tonight, instead of the usual happy Apple icon, the computer stopped at an image of my hard disk with an arrow pointing to it, which I discovered I had to click to get the computer to start fully. Once I clicked the arrow pointing to the HD icon, the computer seemed to run fine, and started up normally again on another try. I haven't done anything funky with changing the designated startup disk, starting up from a network drive, etc.
    What gives?

That means that the computer thought the Option key had been pressed at startup. Unless it happens repeatedly by itself, don't worry about it.

  • Slow system and applications.

    Hello everybody!
I have macbook pro which I bought 8 months ago and I have a mac universal which I bought 5 years ago. I usually use my macbooks for online research, pages, keynote and numbers. Besides that I dont do something special. But lately both my macbooks are running very slow and most of the time I have pop-ups on the safari or on firefox. I have an application which name is mackeeper to speed up my both macbook but It seems like it doesnt do anything. I am trying to learn more about macbook. What kind of applications that I have to use for speed up for my macbooks? Or what should I do? Please let me know I would like to learn more about Mac.
(my both macbooks are up to date)
    Thank you so much!

Hi Dibenkorn, first of all thank you so much for your time!! this report belongs to my macbook universal one! I dont have the BBM application but I believe I still have its root under my data! What should I do? How I can delete all those 3rd party links!!!

  • Slow system and too many details after upgrading to OS/Lion

This MacBook Pro is my right hand, I was doing so great with Snow Leopard, Now everything takes twice longer. I cleaned up, reseted, reinstalled softwares, etc. same.
Too many details that doesn't work correctly.
-Safari constantly needs to be loading. Some times Firefox.
The track pad cant keep open a display box with a long list, once you try to scroll down.
-Preview, i used this app a lot, safe me time, DUPLICATE? instead of SAVE, i don't see the purpose. After editing images and safe them, gamma, color patterns and light appear distortion.
-iTunes volume doesn't comeback after using Skype or another app, remains low.
-Airport takes a bit longer to find a local network.
-There is not an extra space for the left and right scroll bottom on the finder window, sometimes this one disappear but mostly remains which makes it pretty tricky to open the last file at the bottom of the list. because the scroller is on front.
-External Drives, takes longer to connect or disconnect them.
Suggestions before i reinstall Snow Leopard.

    guizz,
it sounds like you have come across the mother of all problems but i would like to help as much as i can.
first of all, i noticed that it took a few days after installing lion before my system was back to the full stride it had while running snow leopard give it some time and a few updates and lion should speed up because components such as ram take time to adjust.
the duplicate thing in preview is a new thing that came out with versions, one of the many new features in lion. i think it takes the place of the SAVE AS... command and you should still be able to save using the old command-s keystroke however part of lion includes an autosave feature so you really never have to worry about saving your work.
i personally cannot speak for safari or firefox even though i have both because i use google chrome as my web browser you can always give that a try.
in the system preferences under the general settings option you can change how the scroll bar is displayed on the screen.
i would suggest searching for other people who have had similar problems with itunes to try and find an answer
as for everything else your system may just need time to adjust to lion
good luck hope this helped a little

  • Slow System and Failure Messages

I am working on a project, and Captivate keeps slowing down/quitting on me.  What is the next step @AdobeCommunity?
I was working with adjusting audio in my 62 slide presentation, off the local server, had been clearing the cache, and saving as I went.  After two particularly slow saves with lengthy "not responding" messages (we are talking 4-5 minutes until I recieved a response), I closed Captivate and restarted my computer. The following are all of the error screens.

When you write "off the local server" does that mean that you worked on the project file while it was located on a server? If yes, then that is most likely the problem. Captivate does not play nice with networks.
If you are in a corporate environment with roaming profiles etc. you should also ensure that your project cache etc. are not synched with the server. Read this article for more info: http://www.cpguru.com/setting-up-adobe-captivate-6-in-a-corporate-environment/

How do I keep Firefox automatically starts when I boot up (OSX 10.6 .8 -- MacBook Pro Intel). It is not in the Startup Items in System Preferences, and automatic startup is not checked in Firefox Options.

    Hi fullrun-
Once Firefox is open, you should be able to open the Right click context menu on the icon. From there you select 'Options' and then de-select 'Open at Login'. Hope that helps.

    Hi,
Shut down the notebook.  Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Select the Bios option ( usually f10 ) and under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run tests on both the Hard Drive and Memory.  Post back with the details of any error messages.
Note:  If the option to run these tests is not available in the Bios Menu, use the f2 diagnostic menu instead.
Can you also post back with the following details.
    1.  The full Model No. and Product No. of your notebook - see Here for a guide on locating this information.
    2.  The full version of the operating system you are using ( ie Windows 7 64bit ).

  • IMac 21" late 09: Slow, screen flickering/tearing and odd behavior - the problem that puzzles everyone

    PLEASE HELP!
My iMac 21" late -09, started acting a bit wierd a year ago. Things got worse rapidly, it got slower, the screen flickers/tears (see link below), short moments of lost internet connection, lost connection whit the keyboard (might be keyboard that is broken), almost overheats when gaming and odd behavior on some webbsites whit galleries and/or videos.
Let's begin whit the screen: it's not vertikal lines or major distortions, just a subtle horisontal line that "wanders" from bottom to topp and some lagging from time to time. Looks like this: http://cl.ly/3i2W2o3S1D2T
The wierd thing is that hi-res does not mean more "tearing". Yes the lagg and risk of tearing increases, but the connection seems to be: lots of movement=tearing. So a pixeld 240p video of people dancing can be way worse than a news debbate in1080p!?!
Lost connection whit internet and keyboard rarely happens and is probably due to something else, but thought that was good to have in mind.
Odd behavior: galleries ex: when browsing images on Facebook in fullscreen, the image sometimes jumps around in the beginning and when clicking on next the same picture might appear again or just nothing at all. When scrolling down overwiewing a gallery, the updating stops and you can't scroll down further. This problem appers mainly on FB, deviantart also acts a bit wierd but there is often small issues whit image sites. Doesn't help to switch browsers either!
Videos: Youtube is horrible to use, stops loading, dosen't start loading, erases everything loaded (grey bar disapears and reloads), refuse to switch ressolution and suddenly stops the video like it was done! "ehh.. wasn't this 2min long? Not anymore, now its 34sec!". Mainly a Youtube problem but many similar sites can be a bit problematic to use.
NO, it's not the HTML-5 problem or any standard flash issue and using a different browser dosen't help!
Worst is the fact that most of these errors are not constant! One day your watching youtube or mabey a movie in VLC, a bit laggy, but almost no problem. Next day **** brakes lose and after 2hours of struggling you are ready to stabb yourself in the face!
What i tried: Most easy buggfixes that might cause the above problems, updating most things, Switched from OS X SL to OS X ML, complete reinstall and some things i probably forgot by now. Then went to MacStore for repair, they didn't find anything wrong and said it worked fine after the standard diagnostic/repair program!?! Went home and everything was the same! Went a second time to MacStore, same result.
So I'v reinstalled a few times and it seems to improve the Mac. But 2-3weeks later every error is back, even if I barely installed or downloaded anything!?!
Any idea what this could be? Or is the graphic card broken and MacStore has a blind, inbred muppet as a technician?

No I didn't. The first time i explained the problem thoroughly and thought that they just couldn't miss such a visual error. I was wrong. The second time the technician wasn't there so i showed the above clip to the salesstaff and explained everything onceagain. Later the technician called me and we talked for 10min.
Btw, the problems always "manifests themselves", just varies between strenght and frequence.
But all other issues aside, what could cause the tearing of the screen as seen int the above clip?

My email crashed and my ICloud icon disappeared by my system and reverted to mobile me which of course is no longer available. Any ideas on what to do?

You'll actually need to order a snow leopard DVD first.  Then you can download mountain lion via the app store.  Confirm you meet the requirements:  http://www.apple.com/osx/specs
If you dont, you might be able to get lion instead.  That's an order over the phone, to get a redemption code.
And make sure you're actually contacting apple:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
You'll also want to confirm your 3rd party apps are compatible before an OS upgrade.  Of course, you'll also want to backup your data.
