Slow System with K7N420

I have a system with a K7N420 in which I had 256MB(x2) of Crucial memory. I stole on stick for a new box I was building while I waited for prices to go down. When they did I moved the second stick back to the K7N420 box. When I moved it back I also did some live updates on the drivers. Now the system takes a minimum of ten minutes to boot. At least 8 of those bedfore the USB comes up (intellimouse goes red?). When I check the system it shows that I only have 480MB of memory instead of the 512MB that is there. I boot seperatly on each card and they each register as 224MB. I have moved them from slot 0 to 1 or 2 with the same results.  I upgraded to BIOS V2.8 and that didn't help. Have I introduced something ro has the board gone bad? Any suggestions? Thanks.

32mb goes to the onboard video, but the long boot problem?
Well I am thinking one of those updates is causing problems or your HD may be going bad. If you have nothing to lose but time then I suggest a clean install, SP1 and then the unified drivers 2.03.
Stay away from live update or any MSI drivers for now.
Oh and if you used BootVis from micromush that could also be causing some problems.

  • Slow system with btrfs

    Hi, I have reinstalled system and choose btrfs as system default filesystem. System is overally very slow, maybe this can be also caused by systemd(I had installed archlinux without systemd before), but dont think so.
    It takes about 30s to start any application, openning webpages is slow, downloading....copying between folders is about 5MB/s.
    Can be this caused by btrfs?
    I have noteebook ibm x41, with 1,5ghz cpu, 1,5gb ram.
    Is possible and how to backup data on system disk with btrfs and change filesystem to ext4?
    thanks

  • Slow System (includes Etrecheck...)

    Problem description:
    My system processing seems slow - even with nearly no apps open.
    I still have almost 20Gb of HD space, I’m not syncing to time machine, and it’s not internet connectivity that’s affected or affecting this degradation in performance.
    I’m not running torrent software or anything like that, but the system itself is crazy laggy.
    What's to be done?

    When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
    These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
    from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
    Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
    Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
    Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
    The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
    Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
    Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

    i am using laptop hitting and slow system not working and very late opan file browser every think . plez help me

    Hi,
    Shut down the notebook.  Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Select the Bios option ( usually f10 ) and under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run tests on both the Hard Drive and Memory.  Post back with the details of any error messages.
    Note:  If the option to run these tests is not available in the Bios Menu, use the f2 diagnostic menu instead.
    Can you also post back with the following details.
    1.  The full Model No. and Product No. of your notebook - see Here for a guide on locating this information.
    2.  The full version of the operating system you are using ( ie Windows 7 64bit ).
    Regards,

  • Mac mini slow speed - with pauses

    My Mac Mini crashed and I had to reinstall.
    Now it runs partly very slow, even with pauses, where I have to wait for responses.
    Start-up takes long minutes.
    System profiling tools says HD activity reaches a max of 8MB/s.
    CPU workload looks far below 100%.
    Is there any experience with this?
    How can I check and find out more precise the reason for slowing down?
    Mac Mini:  4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM, 500 GB HD, 2,66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, OS X 10.7.2 everything updated

    As per the reply to your other post with the same question:
    This is not something to worry about or be concerned with. Firstly, the paging counts will depend on how long the system has been running since the last boot, but MacOS is designed to actively page out and in, so in itself, the fact your system shows it is doing so means nothing at all.
    If your computer is exhibiting some indication of a problem, I suggest you start a new thread here and describe what you are experiencing. That way we can help you directly with the specifics of your problem. On the other hand, if you have just seen the comments regarding paging and system performance and have checked your own Mac to see what it's doing - the answer is that in the absence of an indication of a problem, it's very likely doing exactly what it ought to be doing!

  • Extremely slow performance with Radeon HD 7870

    Hi,
    I am using a number of Adobe programs on my new Windows 8 64 bit system, with 16 gigs of ram, an Intel Core i5 2.67ghz, and AMD Radeon HD 7870 2 gig. All the programs (including After Effects and Illustrator) work very well with the exception of Photoshop CS6 64 bit, which has extremely slow performance with Use Graphics Processor enabled in my preferences (which Photoshop selects by default). If I turn off Use Graphics Processor, the slow performance vanishes. If I change Drawing Mode to Basic, there might be a slightly detectable improvement over Normal and Advanced, but it's still horribly slow. The refresh rate seems to be just a few frames per second. Everything is slow: brushes, zooming, panning, everything.
    I've tried changing the settings I've seen suggested elsewhere: I switched Cache levels to 2, history states to 10, and tile size to 128k. No effect. Photoshop is currently at the default of using 60% of available ram. Efficiency has remained at 100% throughout all my tests. Also, this slow performance has affected me from the moment I installed Photoshop; it didn't crop up after previous good performance. The problem exists regardless of the size or number of documents I have open. Performance is still terrible even when I create a 500 x 500 pixel blank new canvas and try a simple task like drawing with the brush.
    Photoshop is fully up to date, and so are my graphics drivers (Catalyst version 13.1). Any help would be greatly appreciated; at the moment performance is so bad in Photoshop that it's unusable with graphics acceleration enabled. Thanks in advance for replying.

    Great news!
    I followed your suggestion, Noel, and uninstalled my drivers with the Catalyst Uninstall Utility (which I hadn't used before), rebooted, reinstalled Catalyst 13.2 Beta 7, rebooted, deleted the PS Prefs, started PS, and now the performance is radically improved!
    It baffles me why I would need to do a clean driver uninstall in a new system environment that has only ever had this video card, and is only a few months old, but that action seems to be what's improved the situation. Note that because I deleted the PS preferences, the good performance now occurs with the default Use Graphics Processor enabled, and Drawing Mode set to Advanced (with every feature in the Advanced dialog checked except 30bit display).
    Having no reference point, I can't tell for sure if performance is as good as it theoretically ought to be for my system specs, but using the standard 13px brush is only slightly laggy behind the cursor, even if I become reckless and squiggle on the canvas violently. It wasn't just sluggish response before: Photoshop seemed to be in pain trying to draw the line segments as it laboured to catch up to the cursor. That is pretty much gone now.
    Much more tellingly, zooming and panning the canvas is like it ought to be, responsive and clean, more or less like it was for me in CS4 with my old Nvidia 9600GT. The poor performance with zooming and panning was the most worrying aspect of the issue. It's a great relief to see these working more properly now.
    I have to confess I'm a little embarrassed to have drug you through all this hassle only to discover that something as rudimentary as properly cleaning out the drivers would be the apparent solution. I never would have imagined that doing that, with such a new and stable system, would make any difference, since I don't have a legacy of older drivers dotting my hard drive. In any event, I'm really grateful that you guys took the time to try to help me.
    In the interest of completeness, here's the relevant portion of my system info after doing the reinstall steps I mentioned above:

    As you can see, the Microsoft Basic Render Driver still appears as a Video Card in the list. This presumably has something to do with Windows 8, and I really don't know if its presence here is still a sign that my card is not being used to its optimal capability. I have a hunch that the slight lag that I am still experiencing with the brush when Use Graphics Processor is on -- totally absent with the acceleration turned off -- implies that Photoshop is still unable to take maximum advantage of my card. I would assume that the brush tool should be more responsive with acceleration on than off, in a rig without any issues, but that's just assumption on my part. If you turn off Use Graphics Processor on your systems, is the brush tool more or less responsive?
    But again, panning the canvas with the hand tool is now extremely responsive, without any screen tearing or visible lag, and that's a massive improvement over the total meltdown of performance I was suffering from before.
    Thanks again very much for your help. I'm grateful to all of you who took the time to chime in.

  • Disk too slow / System overload HELP?

    I'm really hoping someone can help me out with this!:
    I purchased a G4 PowerBook around six months ago, with Logic Pro pre-installed. Since then, I have mixed and mastered lots of music that was recorded on a previous system and imported. I was running multiple tracks simultaneously with tons of plug-ins and everything ran smoothly on my new Mac. HOWEVER, within the last month, my playback capabilities have been severely reduced. When I try to play back even two tracks simultaneously (with just one compressor or reverb), I get the error message, "Disk too slow / System overload."
    My first reaction to this problem was to check my disk space and see how much room I had left: it turns out I have over one third of my harddrive space still available. I checked my memory capabilities and they seem to be more than adequate. I bought new virus protection, too, and ran scans to see if that might make a difference, but it hasn't. I don't understand why this is happening on a system so new. ANY ADVICE YOU CAN OFFER WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!
    Many thanks.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    It is generally not a good idea to run logic on the same drive that contains your audio files and samples. Most of the data involved with logic whether it be programs or individual audio files will be saved physically all over the place on your hard drive. At a certain point the actual part of the drive that reads the data will not be able to move around to all the little different audio files it needs to access for the session on top of running the program and whatever other software that is up. It is best to save all your audio files and samples to a fast external drive (7200rpm at least) otherworldcomputing.com has great drives that have high quality cases and the option to put any drive they have in stock into the case. (i would recommend seagate) If you are going to continue running your entire sessions off the internal drive then you need to keep up with your basic mac housekeeping. You should repair your permissions 2 times a month (use disk utility) You should buy a good directory repair program such as disk warrior. The directory is exactly what it sounds like. It keeps track of where everything is on the computer. If your directory is corrupt the computer will have to do an extra manual search to find what its looking for. If your directory is healthy your computer will make a straight shot to the file you are looking for.

  • I cannot update from OS 10.9.4 to 10.9.5. I get a message saying: File couldn't be installed error (513). I have configured my OS so that I have read and write permission followed by system with read and writ permission. Can someone help me? Thanks.

    I cannot update from OS X 10.9.4 t0 10.9.5> Whenever I try I get the following message: File couldn't be installed error (513) and something about not having the proper permission.  Under the Macintosh HD sharing and permissions settings I have customized the settings so that (Me) has read and write permission followed by the system with read and write permission, wheel and everyone have Read permissions.
    I have no problems updating apps such as Adobe CC or iTunes but cannot update the operating system, can someone help me? Thanks.

    1. Restart the computer in safe mode. Certain caches maintained by the system will be rebuilt.
    Safe mode is much slower to start up than normal. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
    When the login screen appears, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and test. There's no need to log in while in safe mode.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode. In that case, go to Step 2.
    If there's no change after taking this step, continue.
    2. Back up all data before proceeding.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /var/folders
    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
    from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "folders" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash.
    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
    from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Extremely slow system help on ETRE report

    my mac became exteremely slow, in even the most basic tasks like switching between applications, copy&paste, etc. I suspect that there are running strange processes that are slowing down the system. I paste the report from ETRE herunder. Could someone take a check it and give me some recomendations? Would be great thank you!

    hi john, hi all,
    i was not able to remove all "User Login Items", because they did not show up, wether in the "pref pane / user / login items" nor in the library.
    all cleaning did not have any effect.
    So i decided to backup my data, formal the HD and install a virgin system. To avoid infecting the new system with any "germs" from the  old system, I did not migrate all the old data, but copied manually only my documents, but not system files etc.
    Nontheless, my macbook pro is still slow in basic tasks (in particular opening windows and dialogs, typing i search fields of spotlight, mail, browser, etc, othe UI-interaction).
    Does anybody have an idea, what is wrong?
    After formating and before installing the new OS10.9 i run ckecks with:
    - disk utility
    - dr. web (antivirus)
    - virus barrier (antivirus)
    - onyx
    no fatal errors where found. Everything was cleaned/fixed

  • Very Slow Query with CTE inner join

    I have 2 tables (heavily simplified here to show relevant columns):
    CREATE TABLE tblCharge
    (ChargeID int NOT NULL,
    ParentChargeID int NULL,
    ChargeName varchar(200) NULL)
    CREATE TABLE tblChargeShare
    (ChargeShareID int NOT NULL,
    ChargeID int NOT NULL,
    TotalAmount money NOT NULL,
    TaxAmount money NULL,
    DiscountAmount money NULL,
    CustomerID int NOT NULL,
    ChargeShareStatusID int NOT NULL)
    I have a very basic View to Join them:
    CREATE VIEW vwBASEChargeShareRelation as
    Select c.ChargeID, ParentChargeID, s.CustomerID, s.TotalAmount, isnull(s.TaxAmount, 0) as TaxAmount, isnull(s.DiscountAmount, 0) as DiscountAmount
    from tblCharge c inner join tblChargeShare s
    on c.ChargeID = s.ChargeID Where s.ChargeShareStatusID < 3
    GO
    I then have a view containing a CTE to get the children of the Parent Charge:
    ALTER VIEW [vwChargeShareSubCharges] AS
    WITH RCTE AS
    SELECT ParentChargeId, ChargeID, 1 AS Lvl, ISNULL(TotalAmount, 0) as TotalAmount, ISNULL(TaxAmount, 0) as TaxAmount,
    ISNULL(DiscountAmount, 0) as DiscountAmount, CustomerID, ChargeID as MasterChargeID
    FROM vwBASEChargeShareRelation Where ParentChargeID is NULL
    UNION ALL
    SELECT rh.ParentChargeID, rh.ChargeID, Lvl+1 AS Lvl, ISNULL(rh.TotalAmount, 0), ISNULL(rh.TaxAmount, 0), ISNULL(rh.DiscountAmount, 0) , rh.CustomerID
    , rc.MasterChargeID
    FROM vwBASEChargeShareRelation rh
    INNER JOIN RCTE rc ON rh.PArentChargeID = rc.ChargeID and rh.CustomerID = rc.CustomerID
    Select MasterChargeID as ChargeID, CustomerID, Sum(TotalAmount) as TotalCharged, Sum(TaxAmount) as TotalTax, Sum(DiscountAmount) as TotalDiscount
    from RCTE
    Group by MasterChargeID, CustomerID
    GO
    So far so good, I can query this view and get the total cost for a line item including all children.
    The problem occurs when I join this table. The query:
    Select t.* from vwChargeShareSubCharges t
    inner join
    tblChargeShare s
    on t.CustomerID = s.CustomerID
    and t.MasterChargeID = s.ChargeID
    Where s.ChargeID = 1291094
    Takes around 30 ms to return a result (tblCharge and Charge Share have around 3.5 million records).
    But the query:
    Select t.* from vwChargeShareSubCharges t
    inner join
    tblChargeShare s
    on t.CustomerID = s.CustomerID
    and t.MasterChargeID = s.ChargeID
    Where InvoiceID = 1045854
    Takes around 2 minutes to return a result - even though the only charge with that InvoiceID is the same charge as the one used in the previous query.
    The same thing occurs if I do the join in the same query that the CTE is defined in.
    I ran the execution plan for each query. The first (fast) query looks like this:
    The second(slow) query looks like this:
    I am at a loss, and my skills at decoding execution plans to resolve this are lacking.
    I have separate indexes on tblCharge.ChargeID, tblCharge.ParentChargeID, tblChargeShare.ChargeID, tblChargeShare.InvoiceID, tblChargeShare.ChargeShareStatusID
    Any ideas? Tested on SQL 2008R2 and SQL 2012

    >> The database is linked [sic] to an established app and the column and table names can't be changed. <<
    Link? That is a term from pointer chains and network databases, not SQL. I will guess that means the app came back in the old pre-RDBMS days and you are screwed.
    >> I am not too worried about the money field [sic], this is used for money and money based calculations so the precision and rounding are acceptable at this level. <<
    Field is a COBOL concept; columns are totally different. MONEY is how Sybase mimics the PICTURE clause that puts currency signs, commas, period, etc in a COBOL money field.
    Using more than one operation (multiplication or division) on money columns will produce severe rounding errors. A simple way to visualize money arithmetic is to place a ROUND() function calls after
    every operation. For example,
    Amount = (Portion / total_amt) * gross_amt
    can be rewritten using money arithmetic as:
    Amount = ROUND(ROUND(Portion/total_amt, 4) *
    gross_amt, 4)
    Rounding to four decimal places might not seem an
    issue, until the numbers you are using are greater
    than 10,000.
    BEGIN
    DECLARE @gross_amt MONEY,
     @total_amt MONEY,
     @my_part MONEY,
     @money_result MONEY,
     @float_result FLOAT,
     @all_floats FLOAT;
     SET @gross_amt = 55294.72;
     SET @total_amt = 7328.75;
     SET @my_part = 1793.33;
     SET @money_result = (@my_part / @total_amt) *
    @gross_amt;
     SET @float_result = (@my_part / @total_amt) *
    @gross_amt;
     SET @Retult3 = (CAST(@my_part AS FLOAT)
     / CAST( @total_amt AS FLOAT))
     * CAST(FLOAT, @gross_amt AS FLOAT);
     SELECT @money_result, @float_result, @all_floats;
    END;
    @money_result = 13525.09 -- incorrect
    @float_result = 13525.0885 -- incorrect
    @all_floats = 13530.5038673171 -- correct, with a -
    5.42 error
    >> The keys are ChargeID(int, identity) and ChargeShareID(int, identity). <<
    Sorry, but IDENTITY is not relational and cannot be a key by definition. But it sure works just like a record number in your old COBOL file system.
    >> .. these need to be int so that they are assigned by the database and unique. <<
    No, the data type of a key is not determined by physical storage, but by logical design. IDENTITY is the number of a parking space in a garage; a VIN is how you identify the automobile.
    >> What would you recommend I use as keys? <<
    I do not know. I have no specs and without that, I cannot pull a Kabbalah number from the hardware. Your magic numbers can identify Squids, Automobile or Lady Gaga! I would ask the accounting department how they identify a charge.
    >> Charge_Share_Status_ID links [sic] to another table which contains the name, formatting [sic] and other information [sic] or a charge share's status, so it is both an Id and a status. <<
    More pointer chains! Formatting? Unh? In RDBMS, we use a tiered architecture. That means display formatting is in a presentation layer. A properly created table has cohesion – it does one and only one data element. A status is a state of being that applies
    to an entity over a period time (think employment, marriage, etc. status if that is too abstract).
    An identifier is based on the Law of Identity from formal logic “To be is to be something in particular” or “A is A” informally. There is no entity here! The Charge_Share_Status table should have the encoded values for a status and perhaps a description if
    they are unclear. If the list of values is clear, short and static, then use a CHECK() constraint.
    On a scale from 1 to 10, what color is your favorite letter of the alphabet? Yes, this is literally that silly and wrong.
    >> I understand what a CTE is; is there a better way to sum all children for a parent hierarchy? <<
    There are many ways to represent a tree or hierarchy in SQL.  This is called an adjacency list model and it looks like this:
    CREATE TABLE OrgChart
    (emp_name CHAR(10) NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY,
     boss_emp_name CHAR(10) REFERENCES OrgChart(emp_name),
     salary_amt DECIMAL(6,2) DEFAULT 100.00 NOT NULL,
     << horrible cycle constraints >>);
    OrgChart
    emp_name  boss_emp_name  salary_amt
    ==============================
    'Albert'    NULL    1000.00
    'Bert'    'Albert'   900.00
    'Chuck'   'Albert'   900.00
    'Donna'   'Chuck'    800.00
    'Eddie'   'Chuck'    700.00
    'Fred'    'Chuck'    600.00
    This approach will wind up with really ugly code -- CTEs hiding recursive procedures, horrible cycle prevention code, etc.  The root of your problem is not knowing that rows are not records, that SQL uses sets and trying to fake pointer chains with some
    vague, magical non-relational "id".
    This matches the way we did it in old file systems with pointer chains.  Non-RDBMS programmers are comfortable with it because it looks familiar -- it looks like records and not rows.
    Another way of representing trees is to show them as nested sets.
    Since SQL is a set oriented language, this is a better model than the usual adjacency list approach you see in most text books. Let us define a simple OrgChart table like this.
    CREATE TABLE OrgChart
    (emp_name CHAR(10) NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY,
     lft INTEGER NOT NULL UNIQUE CHECK (lft > 0),
     rgt INTEGER NOT NULL UNIQUE CHECK (rgt > 1),
      CONSTRAINT order_okay CHECK (lft < rgt));
    OrgChart
    emp_name         lft rgt
    ======================
    'Albert'      1   12
    'Bert'        2    3
    'Chuck'       4   11
    'Donna'       5    6
    'Eddie'       7    8
    'Fred'        9   10
    The (lft, rgt) pairs are like tags in a mark-up language, or parens in algebra, BEGIN-END blocks in Algol-family programming languages, etc. -- they bracket a sub-set.  This is a set-oriented approach to trees in a set-oriented language.
    The organizational chart would look like this as a directed graph:
                Albert (1, 12)
        Bert (2, 3)    Chuck (4, 11)
                       /    |   \
                     /      |     \
                   /        |       \
                 /          |         \
            Donna (5, 6) Eddie (7, 8) Fred (9, 10)
    The adjacency list table is denormalized in several ways. We are modeling both the Personnel and the Organizational chart in one table. But for the sake of saving space, pretend that the names are job titles and that we have another table which describes the
    Personnel that hold those positions.
    Another problem with the adjacency list model is that the boss_emp_name and employee columns are the same kind of thing (i.e. identifiers of personnel), and therefore should be shown in only one column in a normalized table.  To prove that this is not
    normalized, assume that "Chuck" changes his name to "Charles"; you have to change his name in both columns and several places. The defining characteristic of a normalized table is that you have one fact, one place, one time.
    The final problem is that the adjacency list model does not model subordination. Authority flows downhill in a hierarchy, but If I fire Chuck, I disconnect all of his subordinates from Albert. There are situations (i.e. water pipes) where this is true, but
    that is not the expected situation in this case.
    To show a tree as nested sets, replace the nodes with ovals, and then nest subordinate ovals inside each other. The root will be the largest oval and will contain every other node.  The leaf nodes will be the innermost ovals with nothing else inside them
    and the nesting will show the hierarchical relationship. The (lft, rgt) columns (I cannot use the reserved words LEFT and RIGHT in SQL) are what show the nesting. This is like XML, HTML or parentheses.
    At this point, the boss_emp_name column is both redundant and denormalized, so it can be dropped. Also, note that the tree structure can be kept in one table and all the information about a node can be put in a second table and they can be joined on employee
    number for queries.
    To convert the graph into a nested sets model think of a little worm crawling along the tree. The worm starts at the top, the root, makes a complete trip around the tree. When he comes to a node, he puts a number in the cell on the side that he is visiting
    and increments his counter.  Each node will get two numbers, one of the right side and one for the left. Computer Science majors will recognize this as a modified preorder tree traversal algorithm. Finally, drop the unneeded OrgChart.boss_emp_name column
    which used to represent the edges of a graph.
    This has some predictable results that we can use for building queries.  The root is always (left = 1, right = 2 * (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM TreeTable)); leaf nodes always have (left + 1 = right); subtrees are defined by the BETWEEN predicate; etc. Here are
    two common queries which can be used to build others:
    1. An employee and all their Supervisors, no matter how deep the tree.
     SELECT O2.*
       FROM OrgChart AS O1, OrgChart AS O2
      WHERE O1.lft BETWEEN O2.lft AND O2.rgt
        AND O1.emp_name = :in_emp_name;
    2. The employee and all their subordinates. There is a nice symmetry here.
     SELECT O1.*
       FROM OrgChart AS O1, OrgChart AS O2
      WHERE O1.lft BETWEEN O2.lft AND O2.rgt
        AND O2.emp_name = :in_emp_name;
    3. Add a GROUP BY and aggregate functions to these basic queries and you have hierarchical reports. For example, the total salaries which each employee controls:
     SELECT O2.emp_name, SUM(S1.salary_amt)
       FROM OrgChart AS O1, OrgChart AS O2,
            Salaries AS S1
      WHERE O1.lft BETWEEN O2.lft AND O2.rgt
        AND S1.emp_name = O2.emp_name
       GROUP BY O2.emp_name;
    4. To find the level and the size of the subtree rooted at each emp_name, so you can print the tree as an indented listing.
    SELECT O1.emp_name,
       SUM(CASE WHEN O2.lft BETWEEN O1.lft AND O1.rgt
       THEN O2.sale_amt ELSE 0.00 END) AS sale_amt_tot,
       SUM(CASE WHEN O2.lft BETWEEN O1.lft AND O1.rgt
       THEN 1 ELSE 0 END) AS subtree_size,
       SUM(CASE WHEN O1.lft BETWEEN O2.lft AND O2.rgt
       THEN 1 ELSE 0 END) AS lvl
      FROM OrgChart AS O1, OrgChart AS O2
     GROUP BY O1.emp_name;
    5. The nested set model has an implied ordering of siblings which the adjacency list model does not. To insert a new node, G1, under part G.  We can insert one node at a time like this:
    BEGIN ATOMIC
    DECLARE rightmost_spread INTEGER;
    SET rightmost_spread
        = (SELECT rgt
             FROM Frammis
            WHERE part = 'G');
    UPDATE Frammis
       SET lft = CASE WHEN lft > rightmost_spread
                      THEN lft + 2
                      ELSE lft END,
           rgt = CASE WHEN rgt >= rightmost_spread
                      THEN rgt + 2
                      ELSE rgt END
     WHERE rgt >= rightmost_spread;
     INSERT INTO Frammis (part, lft, rgt)
     VALUES ('G1', rightmost_spread, (rightmost_spread + 1));
     COMMIT WORK;
    END;
    The idea is to spread the (lft, rgt) numbers after the youngest child of the parent, G in this case, over by two to make room for the new addition, G1.  This procedure will add the new node to the rightmost child position, which helps to preserve the idea
    of an age order among the siblings.
    6. To convert a nested sets model into an adjacency list model:
    SELECT B.emp_name AS boss_emp_name, E.emp_name
      FROM OrgChart AS E
           LEFT OUTER JOIN
           OrgChart AS B
           ON B.lft
              = (SELECT MAX(lft)
                   FROM OrgChart AS S
                  WHERE E.lft > S.lft
                    AND E.lft < S.rgt);
    7. To find the immediate parent of a node:
    SELECT MAX(P2.lft), MIN(P2.rgt)
      FROM Personnel AS P1, Personnel AS P2
     WHERE P1.lft BETWEEN P2.lft AND P2.rgt
       AND P1.emp_name = @my_emp_name;
    I have a book on TREES & HIERARCHIES IN SQL which you can get at Amazon.com right now. It has a lot of other programming idioms for nested sets, like levels, structural comparisons, re-arrangement procedures, etc.

  • Slow Mac with recurrent spinning ball of doom

    Please help,
    My Mac has always been slow since I had it and migrated my PC content to my Mac.  I have run EtreCheck and hope that this might illuminate the cause of my issues, but worry that it may not.  ANYTHING I ask the Mac to do will be slow and inevitably cause a spinning ball for a while.  I have kept the system up to date.  I have a lot of photos in iPhoto but can't imagine this can be the cause?
    Any help is much appreciated.  The Etrecheck output is below:
    Many thanks.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
    There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
    You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
    In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
    You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
    Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
    ☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
    ☞ Paste into the window of another application.
    ☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
    ☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
    The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
    and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
    If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be a series of messages in the Terminal window like this:
    Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
    Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
    The messages won't be spaced equally apart in time, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
    Wait for the final message
    [Process completed]
    to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the last message you saw. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
    At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
    If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • CS5 on mac 10.6.4 slows system to a crawl, render times really long

    We recently upgraded our towers to 10.6.4 and all productivity has slowed to a snails pace using After Effects. On 10.5 the speed was almost TOO fast on our renders...it was awesome. Now I'm looking to get that speed back.
    I have a few very simple comps. 1920 x 1080, 23.98fps, 5 layers (4 QT renders from final cut XDCAM and Animation codec, 1 adjustment layer with levels and hue/saturation for color correction). Approx 40 seconds long each.
    I've followed the Adobe advice of turning the multiprocessing on and using the following settings from here http://forums.adobe.com/thread/543440
    leave 4gb for other apps, set minimum 3gb per processor = 33min render
    setting it back to what WAS screaming fast on 10.5:
    leave 3gb for other apps, set minimum 0.75gb per processor = 19min render
    turning multiprocessing off = 5min render
    same project on 10.5 system with multiprocessing turned ON with the above mentioned settings = 2min render
    what is going on here? is there a compatibility problem with CS5/10.6 and Animation codec files? that seems to be the bulk of the slowdown, but still over twice as slow?
    additionally, when AE is rendering the rest of the system becomes unusable...every action, even dragging a finder window around, results in beachballs and a 30 - 40 second lag in response. this happens with or without multiprocessing.
    I just want to get back to work...any ideas on how i can configure this beast to get back to my former speeds?
    8 core mac Pro
    OS 10.6.4
    12gb RAM
    many thanks in advance. i'm willing to send beer for a winning fix.

    Good to know, thanks for the update. 10.6.x does manage memory differently, but our testing for performance has shown a slight improvement in the newer OS. So I am guessing that the OS update is not the issue. I just ran another test on a Mac with your configuration and saw a 4% improvement on 10.6.4 over 10.5.8.
    It's uncertain what state the system memory was in when you started your tests. That's why I asked for a restart of the computer. The times reported seemed like there was a possibility that the OS was swapping. XDCAM footage places a high demand on system resources.  But it's hard to say without being there.
    What I was seeing with the initial post was that the two extremes of allocation per background cpu were tried, but not the middle ground. To better see this, launch the Activity Monitor utility or look at the last line of the MP preference. With the 4GB reserved and the 3GB/ bkgnd cpu setting you weren't getting any extra processes spawned for multiprocessing. You can see this in the preferences multiprocessing section as "Actual CPUs that will be used = 0". Then, by setting the pref to .75GB/bkgnd the app launched 8 bkgnd processes, but for the task at hand, I am guessing that they were starved for memory and sometimes failed to render. This was faster than the first test, but still slow. By setting the pref to 1.5GB/bkgnd cpu you were now getting 4 new processes spawned for multiprocessing. The background processes had enough memory to succeed so that made it render faster still.
    Now, try setting it to 1GB/bkgnd cpu. That will launch 6 processes which should render faster as long as that is enough memory for the task. If  the Memory pref for Reserve RAM for other apps is set back to 3GB, it will allow the spawning of 7 bkgnd processes. If that is a successful balance for this project then it will be the fastest render time. But, our testing shows it will be at the risk of starving the OS for memory, thus the more conservative 4GB recommendation for a 12GB system.
    It's a fine line and why we are recommending that one give up a little speed by reserving more memory for other apps. True, there will be less processes spawned for multiprocessing, but there will also be less chance for the OS to start swapping to disk which greatly slows down performance for all tasks. If that compromise is not acceptible, then the alternative is to buy more ram so that all 8 processes can adequately receive enough memory for the job, and yet still maintain adequate reserves for the OS and other apps.

  • How many people can be on the system with a 512 K connection in BPC 7 MS

    Hi,
    It appears that BPC uses a large piece of the band width and more than one computer and user with a 512 K connection using BPC will not work.How many people can be on the system with a 512 K connection? -BPC 7 ms version.
    Thx
    PLN

    I would like to precise more things regarding the network.
    I did a case study for one customer and really to have good performances with SAP BPC client the network required the follow:
    Bandwitdth 1024kb/s
    Latency smaller than 200 ms between BPC client and BPC server
    Otherwise the users will experience problems:
    1. IBandwitdh < 1024Kb/s then to download 80 MB or more (templates + dimensions) will require a lot of time and that's means the login time will be very slow every time when a dimension is changed or security is process
    2. When an report is executed (a medium report not very complex report) around 100 mesage are send between bpc client and server. So if latency > 200 ms than a simple calculation is saying just into network it will be lost 200 * 100 ms = 20 s.
    So for a report which normally is taking 5 - 10 second it will take 30s or even more into client with latency bigger than 200 ms.
    Regards
    Sorin Radulescu

  • How should I go about this? (resetting my system with minimal losses?)

    Hey,
    I want to 'reset' my system with as little change as possible. I actually just wanted to install Windows XP with Boot Camp, but I ran into some problems. Soon thereafter some other weird things arose. After getting some help from very assisting folks here on Apple Discussions and on IRC, I understand that my best bet is probably to reformat my iMac's internal hard drive and, consequently, either reinstall Mac OS X or copy everything from an external hard drive back to the internal one.
    My question is, which of these two options would be preferable? If I erase the internal disk and reinstall OS X with the install DVD, can I use a Time Machine backup to 'migrate' everything back? or do I need to do this with some other backup software; or do I just 'restore from backup'?
    How would I make a backup which I could then copy back to the internal disk and continue using my Mac as before? Would this have to be a so-called "bootable backup"?
    Which way is (more) likely to fix any issues with the file system and/or operating system? Did I even get all of the above right?
    *Thanks a lot in advance for any tips!*
    P.S. Is it true that Time Machine doesn't backup certain files like cache files? If so, is there anything else that Time Machine ignores? (aside from non-file metadata which is needed to create a bootable backup disk/partition)

    From my experiences, the restore from backup feature is excruciatingly slow. I'd re-install OS X from scratch, hook up your TM drive (which will be automatically recognized as such), and then manually copy files over. This will also help prevent copying back corrupt plists and other files which caused your previous issue.
    How would I make a backup which I could then copy back to the internal disk and continue using my Mac as before? Would this have to be a so-called "bootable backup"?
    Bootable is always great, but is not necessary. Just keep your TM up to date.
    Which way is (more) likely to fix any issues with the file system and/or operating system? Did I even get all of the above right?
    As long as you don't do a complete restore of either (which would put everything back, either method works.
    P.S. Is it true that Time Machine doesn't backup certain files like cache files? If so, is there anything else that Time Machine ignores? (aside from non-file metadata which is needed to create a bootable backup disk/partition)
    Yes. Check the TM pane in System Preferences and click on Options to see a list of excluded files and folders. Otherwise, all other files (minus cache and temporary files that would automatically get purged quickly) are backed up.

  • Best IDE for slow system

    what is the good IDE with drag and drop interface for slow system running on P3 500mhz ,ram256

    I said relatively svelte. If Eclipse seemed slow, you'd shoot yourself in the head after trying to use TogetherSoft or TogetherJ or whatever the hell it's called. At one place I worked, where they wanted us all to use that IDE, I used to start the thing up, then leave to get a cup of coffee. I mean, I went downstairs, waited in line at the Starbucks, etc., and when I got back it still wasn't even finished starting up.
    Later I learned that they didn't even check what IDEs we were using, so I just used vi. I also tried using Eclipse and it ran OK but I prefer vi.
    I tend not to use IDEs much but when I've used Eclipse, it's always been pretty good, and it was never on the latest and greatest hardware.
    So try it, and if it doesn't seem fast enough, use something else. I suggest vi.
