Slow to a crawl in the Discussions Forum

Today has been maddeningly slow . It was taking a few minutes to just open a subject , a couple times I timed out and/or the site appeared to actually go down . I am finding it strange that I don't see much mention of this . At first I thought it was my eMac but the Powerbook was also slow and when I tried the PC , it to was slow . This is just in the Apple Discussions Forum everything else is fine so it's not AT&T
A search for "slow" showed up some problems in Nov. that were blamed on "code tweaking" so I assume this may be the same problem . Is there someplace that tells about current issues or problems ? Ebay mentions in advance when they will be doing maintenance .

Hi Kady
Thank you for the info . I thought it was my computer because I was having other troubles .
Was it memory leaks ? It would be nice if something could be posted when things slow down. Hear is some info I found ;
Well, I’m sure you guys and gals know this already, but spend half an hour on the Apple discussion boards at http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?[email protected]@ , preferably accessing things like “my posts” or other search related activity and you will very soon find some nasty memory leaks.
Most people find that the ‘Real RAM” consumption of Safari goes up from a a few megabytes to over 200MB within 20 minutes or so., at which time very nasty slowdowns occur (40 secs to a minute to open a link on the pages, despite my 1500 ADSL link and an iMac G5 2 GHz with 2 gig of RAM. The problem causes these slowdowns even when I have more than a Gig of RAM completely free.)
A number of Apple Discussion Board Level 4’s have been discussing this problem and reporting exactly the same experience. We have been wondering whether to blame you, Apple , Javascript, or Web Crossing. Many people who use this board regularly are simply shifting to other browsers to avoid the problem.
The leak can be overcome to a large extent by disabling javascript, but this is a very annoying way to have to deal with the issue. Spend half an hour on these boards and I’m sure you will soon get some relevant information!
Cheers
Rod

  • Search the discussions forum

so... we used to be able to search the discussions forum. Maybe I'm just missing where that feature went to. When I use the Search at the upper right corner of the page it searches all of Apple.com, but strangely enough rarely hits the forums. Please point me in the right direction.

  • The Discussion Forum

The discussion forum which Oracle has come up with a new look ,
i feel is more cumbersome to use.
The earlier forum was much better in terms of usage .
Although the look and feel wise the new forum is much better but
    its not user friendly .
Sorry to say but the previous Discussion forum was much more
    better.

Noted. Comments about the discussion forum itself can be posted

  • Editing the discussion forum portlet

    Hi,
I've just deployed the discussion forum portlet from portal center, and am using it in a portal. But, how can I remove the big Oracle Logo that is displaying in the portlet?
    Best regards
    Eva Svensson

    Hi Evan,
Are you talking about OracleAS Provider for Jive Forums?
If you are, then you can remove the logo by going to:
    htdocs/launchLink.jsp
and modify the table tag which has a reference to the logo(images/logo.gif)
    thanks,

  • How to down-load the discussion forum portlet??

I am willing to download the discussion forum portlet from the
    portalstudio site.
For that i was suppose to download and install WinCVS first.
I did that but while setting-up the cofiguration.
I had to enter my login name and password, provided by the
    otn.oracle.com
WinCVS refused to recognize the login name
i m unable to understand the problem .
And i do not have any other option for downloading the
    discussion forum portlet.
Is there any other way to download it
or is there something else ,which is to be done while
    installing the WinCVS

  • Why did apple screw up the discussion forum format?

Why did apple screw up the discussion forum format?

    Hi,
Apple in this case has to rely on what software is out there that can handle the amount of Traffic that these boards get.
This is from the Brows Option the selecting People in the box
    Note the Number
At the Launch of the new software this was at just over 2,250,000 and has now topped 2,300,000
That is well over 50,000 people joining in just 2 weeks.
Jive are the only real players in this market.
To some extent the software is a one size fits all, much like the previous software was.
We got used to the look and the Folder type layout of the Previous software.
We ignored the foibles of where things were placed.
Things are somewhat double edged in my view.
    I post mostly about iChat.
I don't like that the Leopard and Snow Leopard forums that were are now "Refine the List"/Tag led searching to read specific threads. (not to mention that returning to "Dicussions" loses the "refinement").
On the other hand those same threads and anwsers are now a lot more viewable in the OS forums than the subforums of before.
As a regular poster I use a couple of Boiler plate things for a welcome message and my Signature.
Some were made with TextExpander and included the HTML code to sttyle things slightly.
These no longer work without going to the HTML editor.
Posting link used to use the BBCodeXtra add-on to Firefox but this action is now included in the Regular and Advanced Editor.
That means I equipped myself and used things to get around shortcomings of the old software which is some cases I either don't need or need to learn the new way.
I am sure the Style will morph as we go along.
Of course some of this relies on what exactly you mean by:-

  • Is there any way to programmatically get the discussion forum Id using API

    Hi,
Can any one let me know how to get and set the Discussion service forum Id / category Id to the discussion task flow programmatically using services API's. Here I am using Web center groupspace API's to create and add members to group space from my fusion app. Added the discussion task flow to my fusion app and need to set the category Id / forum Id assigned to that groupspace and display the corresponding discussions. The test connections to discussion forum is success. I am getting all the forums corresponding to that user in my ui. But I want to get the forum that is associated with my groupspace.
    thanks.

Never mind. Got the solution, can get this through servicesMetaData api.

  • The discussion forum's search box still has rendering glitches.

It has been reported several times but is not fixed yet. In Safari 4 the search box is being rendered like this: http://imgur.com/tRAic
Somebody fix this please! It is very distracting!
    Cheers,
    Behi

Not if you click on the Discussions link in Apple.com > Support > Discussions > Using Apple Discussions > Feedback about Discussions
It goes to a page that says "Welcome, Guest" (even though I'm logged in) with s mangled search box.
This also happens when I click on the Return to Forum link at the top of the thread.

  • Right place to submit bug reports for the discussions forums?

I know you can post suggestions here regarding how the Discussions system may be improved, but I'd just like to record a bug somewhere and then be informed if and when it is ever fixed. I'm thinking of something like the bugreporter web app that apple makes available. Anyone know about anything like that?

    With pleasure!
Try it with bugreport.apple.com. Need to be a registered ADC Member, but that frees. Be sure to pick a bug that is reproducible with a simple step by step recipe on the most current software.
So what is this bug you have been talking about?
    Recurring complaint of mine:
March 2006 [If the RSS feeds contained pubDate and author that would be great!|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1892109#1892109]
April 2008 [better rss feeds without jf namespace prefix|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1468264&tstart=189]
The RSS feeds are almost useful. They actually include the author and create date information, but do so in a format that neither safari or any other garden variety RSS reader handles.
Jive's own documentation on the subject [Jive Community: Content Syndication via RSS|http://www.jivesoftware.com/community/docs/DOC-1022] recommends reformatting the output to suit the needs of your audience in the section titled "*Displaying RSS (or, actually doing something with this stuff)*".
It seems the jf: prefixed tags aren't meant to be pushed out to the RSS clients. I certainly haven't found a RSS reader that deals with them correctly or lets you workaround them. So although the feeds have a creation date, modification date, author, and reply count, none of that information can be seen in a garden variety RSS reader. This is particularly a problem for the create date, since the create date of each article is replaced with the pub date of the feed. The pub date of the feed is the time when you pull it down, and that changes each time the feed is refreshed.
Anyway ... it seems to me that it would be a small and correct change that would take the existing RSS offerings that last inch into the realm of useful. Maybe I'll be surprised.

  • PROBLEMS SINCE THE DISCUSSIONS FORUM CHANGED

Since Apple changed the Discussions section, I've had problems. This used to be the best system of all of the groups I used. Now, it's hard to find what I'm looking for. The boolean operators don't function properly. When I searched "fonts AND book", I got results including "and" being highlighted, got results without both words that were supposed to be there, and still don't know if the problem with iPhoto fonts when making books is here. I'll keep looking...

    Hi H!
From any Discussions page, click on more options, located directly below Search Discussions. Above Welcome, your User Alias.
On the window that opens, click on Search Tips, located to the right of the Search radio button.

  • What happened to the search in the discussion forum?

It seems we have lost the ability to "search" in the forum. Is it just my Mac or can we not search anymore?

    Greetings,
With the popularity of the iPhone and it's related discussion areas, we have experienced heavy usage and reduced availability of Apple Discussions today. In order to improve site performance, we have temporarily disabled the following site features:
    * Search
    * Read tracking (the "blue dots")
    * Subscription emails
We are working to restore these features as soon as possible.
Thank you for your patience during this unprecedented and exciting period in Apple's history.
    Regards,
    Apple Discussions staff
Please see http://discussions.apple.com/ann.jspa?annID=382 for the actual posting

  • Can we please modify the Discussion Forums layout, especially the sidebars?

I'd find the sidebars on the forums much more useful if I could modify them by doing one or more of the following:
Remove particular boxes (close button in the top-right corner?)
    Reorder boxes (drag and drop?)
Set box height (slider beneath each box?)
Set how much information is provided in a given box, perhaps with scroll bars if it's more than fits in the box
Prevent the sidebar (as a whole) from scrolling with the forum/message/idea - in fact the header and footer should probably stay static too, especially if I can choose what information is present (e.g. remove the "Announcements" box at the top!)
If I could do those things, I'd set things up with the information I want to see, just the right height for my screen, so that it stayed in place where I want to see it as I browse the forums. At the moment, anything displayed beside what I'm looking at is rarely what I actually want to see, and I need to scroll to particular places to access that.

Oh NO - I kinda like the announcement bar just the way it is!  Don't you?

  • I have a question related to the discussions forum,

    and here it is:
In which thread should I post a technical question about the "Apple Care" warranty--it doesn't seem to have its own heading like the other products and services offered by Apple.
All I really want to ask is, "Why is it that I'm being asked for thirty dollars for a repair that you acknowledge is covered by the additional warranty that I've purchased? I was under the impression that one purchases a warranty so that he or she will NOT have to pay for repairs covered by said warranty."
Anyhow, please let me know where I may direct my question.

    Hello,
I recommend using the phone instead of these forums. The forums are user-to-user and are much too vast for Apple employees to ferret out the user who have special warranty needs or issues.
Your AppleCare plan should have come with a toll-free contact number. Talk to someone there and, if that does not give satisfaction, ask for a customer relations supervisor.
