Slow to browser finder or delete files

I have a macbook pro connected to a maxtor shared storage II gigabit NAS via a gigabit switch. I use Samba to mount the drive via 'connect to server'. For some reason, copying files to the drive I only get a peak throughput of 8MB/s and when browsing the finder or deleting a directory with many files, it takes literally ages. The file names come at a rate of 1 per second.. Does anyone have a clue?

I must have been taking a vacation from my brain yesterday - everything you are talking about must be files in your Mac's home directory, right? There'd be no reason for the Windows Migration assistant to copy anything but data from your Windows data directory. All your data should have preferences set like this: (except it would be your name and not davidwb)
You can select an entire folder, choose GetInfo from the Finder's File menu, click on the lock to type in your password and then click on the Privelege line to set your rights to Read & Write. If your account name doesn't show in the list you can click on the + and add yourself and set your privileges. Then click on the gear and select "Apply to enclosed items" That will set the privileges for that folder and everything in that folder. (If that folder has folders inside it, check each to make sure the changes took on them. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't)
This is true for everything in your home directory but the Library. In the Library many folders have only read/write privileges for the user and everyoneelse has no access privileges. I'd recommend leaving the library alone until/unless you find that you must make changes there.

  • Finder displaying deleted files

I'm having a problem with Finder that I haven't seen before. In the past few days, Finder lists deleted files along the left hand side of it's display, under "Desktop". When I select one of these files the message is "The alias "xxxx" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."
Is there someway to force Finder to refresh it's view so that it don't display those deleted files? Thanks for any assistance.
    iMac G4 17" 1Ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

After about half a day of the slow rate of removal of items by "Secure Empty Trash" (as reported in my O.P., above) a few minutes ago I noticed that the temporarily went back to about one item per second.
About 20 items were removed at the higher removal rate.
Then, the removal rate went back to about i item per minute.
Does that help towards solving the issue?

  • Find and delete files with common name in different directories

I have hundreds of invisible files in many different directories on my 10.4.11 server with .fstemp at the beginning of their name.
They are taking up space and I would like to delete them.
    I can find them using
find . -type f -name .fstemp
But I can't work out how to use the rm command with a wildcard to delete them - I don't want to have to visit many different directories and run rm.
Do I need to pipe the results from the find to rm ?
For extra credit (you can probably tell I am out of my comfort zone here)... the files are all locked. I believe they will need to have
    chflags nouchg /Directory/filename
applied to unlock them before they can be deleted. Can the terminal pipe find|chflgs|delete?
    Thanks,
    b.

Well, if they weren't locked you could just 'delete' them in the find command. Otherwise …
Open the Terminal (from /Applications/Utilities) and copy and paste the following into the Terminal window, one line at a time, with a return after each line:
    sudo -s
    find / -type f -name ".fstemp*" -exec echo 'chflags nouchg "{}" && rm -f "{}"' ; | sh
I have tested this, but obviously with some substitutions. You only need the double quotes around the curly brackets, "{}", if your filenames contain a space.
To be on the safe side, you should check this out without the final "| sh". Then you will see the commands that would be executed with the full version.
Finally type exit to get out of the root shell.

  • Finder shows deleted files until I reopen the folder

    Hi,
I am having a problem in finder after I updated to Maverick (10.9)
Say; I have 3 files in a folder and I delete the first file, Finder still shows all 3 files. But when I open the first one in an app it opens the second one because the first one is already deleted.
I go back to previous folder in finder and come back, then the deleted file disappear and I see 2 files left. This is really annoying.
Is there a solution for that?
    Thanks.

    Thanks a lot.
    I tried to delete plist files as you wrote but there were no such files under that directory. So I deleted them using terminal as described on that page;
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/finder.html
    But it didn't help.
    Same problem continues.

  • Launching Difficulty, DVDSP trying to find purposely deleted file

I recently deleted some .mov files from my external drive to free some space. Since then, I have been unable to work in DVDSP because as soon as it launches, a window pops up that reads, "Searching for movie data in file "Horses_1". When I push the provided "Stop" button it then pops up a window that reads, "The movie file 'horses_1' can not be found. Without this file, the movie cannot play properly."
I can do nothing in the program because these two windows keep popping back up, despite me clicking "Cancel". I trashed that file on purpose. It is not needed for any present or future projects.
How do I get around this and able to work in DVDSP again? And how do I clear the video tab of the palette so it doesn't do it with other deleted files?
Suggestions welcome, Didn't mean to be so lengthy but wanted to be comprehensive, Thank You.
2 GHz MacBook Pro 15" 2 GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   FC Studio

Usually, a missing Quicktime file will allow you to click cancel, open the project, and remove the asset from the item that uses it.
However, you are getting the "without this file the movie cannot play properly" message - this means that you have created a Quicktime reference movie and removed the media file referenced by that movie. ("Make Self-Contained" was uncheked at the time you exported this movie.) In this case, the reference movie has been imported to DVDSP and is not officially "missing", but Quicktime is generating this error when it tries to relink to the media referenced by the quicktime reference movie.
You can move, rename, or delete this reference movie. You might as well delete it, since the media for it is now gone. Once the reference movie, which the acutal asset in your DVDSP Project, is gone, DVDSP should follow it's normal behavior for a missing asset, and allow you to click cancel and open the project.

  • My live mail junk and deleted boxes have an x in them and i cannot find my deleted files .

How do I get my Deleted files and Junk boxes back. I have a message- Some items may be hidden because a View is applied, How can I take this View off ?

On your iMac launch iTunes and at the top next to the Apple symbol click iTunes > Preferences > Devices and tell me what you see. You last sync should be there showing only a device name. If you have an older backup it will be there as well the difference is it will be the device name with a date and time stamp. Sync and backups are two different things and there is a chance iTunes made a backup the first time you hooked up your iPhone 5.

  • I can not find my delete file tab

I have a inbox tab but no delete file tab. I also have 3 columns I do not remember seeing before. Left side column I can not tell what it is but the center is a star and the right column is an attachment file sign.

    sorry didn't read it right.
You might have to right click on your account and subscribe to trash /deleted or whatever your mailserver calls it.
Mouse over column would give you the answer what it is. (Display message threads)

  • Finder is deleting files AFTER successful transfer OS X - Win / sharepoint

This is strange but I've encountered it a number of times now. I'll set a bunch of files (large) to transfer as a selected group between my MBP and another windows machine in our workgroup and upon completion, most if not all of the files will be deleted.
Anyway, the behavior is that it will transfer all the files (agonizingly slow on a wireless -> wireless connection) one by one. You can even play them on the receiving end after each one completes.
Then when the transfer finishes, the files will "disappear" from the receiver and can't be recovered. (No recycle bin, just remote delete)
What's even stranger is that the last time this happened, (12 files for ~4gb) it kept the first two files and deleted the rest of the set.
I'm pretty sure that I can reliably reproduce this, it's just painful to do. I've lost all faith in the mac finder though and can no longer straight "move" files from one place to another. I have to copy, verify, and delete. sigh
I'm all patched up with the latest software updates, and I don't think it's the receivers fault because typically that would entail a move the recycle bin (recoverable).
I've experienced this with 10.6.4 as well.
My workaround (which is unacceptable) is to move the files one by one and babysit the entire process.
    What's going on here?

Apple Support was quite helpful, but in the end I will wait to do a clean install of OS X Yosemite which is due in the Fall and not try and fix OS X 10.9.4 Mavericks.
It turns out that I run backups on my '/Users/john/Library' and the size of this folder before the 10.9.4 update was 1.07 GB and after the update it is 806.9 MB which is baffling, but in the end all of these problems should be resolved with a clean install of OS X Yosemite.
One lesson learned for the future is that I will wait on installing an update until it has been in the wild for awhile as a quick OS X Mavericks Finder Problem search and similar searches show there could be an issue.

  • Cant find and delete files

Oh boy where do I start. I don't want to sound like one of these windows switchers who complains that things on a Mac seem complicated but things on my new Mac mini sure do seem so complicated.
I've had my mini Server (2 x 1TB drives) only a little while, I'm running it alongside my Windows 7 PC which it is to replace eventually. I'm just familiarizing myself with it at present.
The only thing I've done was to import 300Gb worth of photos/videos to the 'second' drive to have a play with iphoto, big mistake.  Iphoto constantly hangs and crashes, it cant seem to handle this amount of files so I deleted the pics/vids.  I've put nothing else on the Mac.
I then notice that the 'first' drive (the server drive) shows 320Gb worth of photos/videos on it?  They are the photos/vids I deleted from the second drive. How, I didn't put them there?  iphoto shows all pics/vids still there.
I've spent hours trying to locate them, some seem to be on a dated folder: server-users-name-pictures-iphoto library-master (folder)- 2013-10-13-20131013-235601. Is this from me using Time Machine for a while? TM worked ok but the backups seemed to be getting very big so I switched it off and deleted all backups.
I only found the location above by taking a screenshot of a spotlight search, if I navigate in finder it only shows stuff up to 'iphoto library' nothing after. The 'iphoto library' is 75Gb but there are 300Gb in total. I've have finder set to show hidden folder.  In iphoto I put the files into trash and tried to delete them, it deleted some of them but it very easily crashes. There are some files iphoto won't let me put into trash saying it doesn't support those files and to use Aperture. (I don't have nor want Aperture).
This is where I am now: some of the files seem to be in the dated folder above which I can't find (Finder doesn't seem very good at finding stuff). I can't delete the files from iphoto as it crashes very quick, in fact iphoto can now barely start up without crashing.  I don't know where the other 200+Gb files are but they are on the first drive. The object is simply to delete all the pics and vids on the first drive.
No doubt one of you guys are going to show me some Mac magic to solve this problem in a flash making me look an idiot, well I'm cool with that just tell me what it is.
    Thanks in advance.

iPhoto is, and always has been, a very cumbersome app.  That really doesn't have anything to do with Finder though. I used iPhoto way way back around version 4 or 5, before I took up "Photoshopping". I've had it on every Mac I've owned, but I don't think I've opened it since 2006. The iPhoto library takes up MASSIVE amounts of space and the bigger it gets, the harder it is to manage. Adobe Bridge does a much better job, and so does Photoshop.
Once you get used to the ins and outs of Finder, you'll see that it's more intuitive than Explorer. Things it does that Windows may or may not ever do, like showing a complete file path from the top of window with just a right click on the title.
    And that's just a start.

  • Finding and deleting files

    Hi,
As an Automator newbie, here is what I did to delete all the .DS_Store files under a certain directory:
    1) Find Finder Item:name contains .DS_Store
    2) Move to trash
I was hoping this will find all the .DS_Store files under a directory and its sub directories and delete them, but turn out nothing was achieved, any idea what I did wrong here? thanks,

There are free utilities that will remove those files. Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
You are aware that although you may delete them they will simply be re-created by the operating system?

  • Finding accidentally deleted files from pages

I was working on an essay when my pages decided to shut down, saying there was an error. I was nearly finished and do not want to start again! How can I retrieve this file !

Sad news, Matthew. If it was not saved, it's gone. You don't have Time Machine set up?
If you do a search, you can find several auto-saves referenced. Sounds like something you need.

  • Imovie continually tries to find deleted files

I deleted several clips from imovie (7.1.4) and now when trying to open imovie it gets hung-up continually trying to find the deleted files. I have emptied the project folder and still it searches for the deleted files. How do  get it to stop trying to find the deleted files?

Try deleting iMovie's preferences file. With iMovie closed, in Finder go to your User (Home) folder Library/Preferences. Locate a file named "com.apple.iMoviexx.plist" where xx represents the version number. I can't recall the exact .plist name for version 7.1.4, which is iMovie '08, but for iMovie '09 it's iMovie8, and for iMovie '11 it's iMovieApp (that is, "com.apple.iMovieApp.plist").
Drag the appropriate .plist file to the trash. When next opened, iMovie will create a fresh file with the default settings, which you can change if desired in iMovie's menu (iMovie>Preferences).
Deleting the preference file sometimes helps when iMovie is not performing as it should. Deleting the file will not damage any of your Events or Projects.

  • Delete File From Mounted Volume

    Hey,
I am trying to delete the "Calendar Cache" files on both my laptop PowerBook G4 and the Mac Pro Quad that I sync my calendars with. I am using ChronoSync and the individual calendars sync fine, but there is a little house keeping needed with the cache file. They need to be deleted on both systems in order to "refresh" the views of the calendars.
So after the sync of calendars, I have the software initiating an AppleScript that deletes both. Here's the script:
+(* PowerBook Files / delete cache file *)+
+(* Please note that both systems have the same username. This may be arise a conflict *)+
    +tell application "Finder"+
    + activate+
+ tell application "Finder" to delete file "Calendar Cache" of folder "Calendars" of folder "Library" of disk "useranthony"+
    +end tell+
+(* Mac Pro Quad/ delete cache file *)+
    +tell application "Finder"+
    + mount volume "afp://10.10.10.1/anthonyabraira"+
+ tell application "Finder" to delete file "Calendar Cache" of folder "Calendars" of folder "Library" of disk "/volumes/useranthony"+
    +end tell+
I am having trouble addressing a deletion on the networked Mac Pro Quad.

why send it to the trash — just delete it...
(* PowerBook Files / delete cache file )
    try
do shell script "rm -rf /Library/Calendars/Calendar\\ Cache"
    end try
you may need a delay for the Mac Pro Quad to mount
( Mac Pro Quad/ delete cache file *)
--the mount and then the delay
    delay 4
    try
do shell script "rm -rf /THE-CORRECT/PATH-HERE/Library/Calendars/Calendar\\ Cache"
    end try
