Slow to launch

I have had Adobe Photoshop Elements for some time now, just recently it has started taking a full minute to open, what could cause it to launch extremly slow after opening fine for a long time? Other programs are opening fine, problem appears to be onlly with Elements. Running on Windows XP Pro.

Generally, changes in behavior are associated with changes in the preferences settings. Try recreating the preference files by holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift when launching Photoshop Elements. If you get the timing right, you will see a dialog that asks if you want to delete the settings file. Do so. This will reset the application to default settings and may get rid of the slow opening behavior.

  • Applications Slow to Launch

I have a Macbook Pro (15 inch 2010). The applications are very slow to launch (keeps jumping for long before launching). Have pasted a report about my system generated using a software (EtreCheck) as advised in the link How to eliminate slow Mac problems. I would be very grateful if someone could help. The MS Office for Mac is extremely slow to launch. The application launch is slow even when my CPU is more than 90% idle and though no backing up is taking place in the background.
Spinning beach ball is a common occurrence though it has not yet started irritating me.

  • Vmware Horizon 3.3.0 - slow when launched from a VM (WS2008 R2) - any solutions ?

    Hi guys,
We have a VMware Horizon setup that works quite well when accessed from our laptops.
However, for a number of reasons we also need this environment accessed from a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine that resides as a VM on a hypervisor.
But the problem is it is very very slow when launched like this (you can feel the mouse cursor lagging or whenever you open a window on the published Vmware View machine). I will point out that the connection to the client VM (WS2008R2) is done through RDP.
The questions I have since I've not been able to find out so far are:
    1)     Is WS2008R2 x86-64 supported as a client ? Does installation of a VMware Horizon Client on it differ in any way than on a Windows 7 machine ?
    2)     Is the fact that it is virtualized the root cause of the slowness ? If yes, why is that and can I do something to fix it ?
Thank you very much , I really appreciate your help.
    Jay.

    Ok, solved it myself
It seems in the "Control Panel > Mouse Options > Pointers > Scheme" the "Windows Aero - System Scheme" was selected. The second I set that to None, the mouse cursor started behaving and it's moving normally.

  • Safari SLOW to launch, FREEZING since iTunes 8.1 update Help Please!!

Ever since I took the latest iTunes update Safari has developed problems, namely very very slow to launch and freezing up on numerous pages. I have done the repair permissions and restarted and nothing has touched this problem at all.
I know there are mentions about this in other threads but I thought I would start another one with the subject line directly reporting the issues.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, even if it is only "wait it out till the next update".

Something is wrong with Safari. It happens alot for my students. I've done a script for them to run to clean things up, it works. (See below) The script runs from a simple AppleScript.app they can dubbelclick.
But When it hangs, I can deselct a lot in Safari preferences and get it running again. I just havent figured out wich of all the parameters that really is responsible.
    Script:
    #!/bin/bash
osascript -e 'tell application "Firefox" to quit'
#osascript -e 'tell application "Safari" to quit'

  • Very slow program launch

    1.83Ghz / 512mb Mini that's about a month old.
I have used Onyx for the Maintenance and Optimisation.
    Restart.
    Wait for everything to load.
    Get Firefox in Quicksilver
    Press Return
24 seconds later Firefox opens and starts loading the 3 homepages.
Everything is slow to launch. I can't see that memory can be a factor when all I'm doing above is opening a browser.
I assume the above can be speeded up?

I can understand the frustration, not least because I can assure you that by and large, quick and efficient is a good way to describe the normal workings of MacOS.
I can tell you, for example, that on my 1GHz G4 powermac (that I am using at this moment) Firefox launches from the dock in 8.9 seconds. Safari in 6.5. This system is several factors slower than your Intel mini. The G4 does, however have 1.5Gb RAM, though it currently has 8 applications open also (excluding Firefox).
I was looking on the Mozilla site for information as to whether the current version of Firefox is Intel-native of not, but there is no clear indication one way or another. O see a reference to an earlier version that IS universal binary though, so that would seem to suggest v2 is also. In any event, you can check when it's running by opening Activity Monitor, which will indicate PPC processes.
There's no doubt that additional memory will help overall, but I would urge you to consider the other issues I mentioned in the last message - permissions, prebinding, caches etc, because these can have a major impact on system performance. I'm assuming you have some familiarity with these issues since at the outset you mentioned OnyX, a good general purpose tool that deals with exactly these matters, and to consider re-downloading the Firefox installer on the mini and then installing again.
I don't have regular access to an Intel mini to see how it performs, though I have set a few up for users in my networks and not found them noticeably slow in any obvious way - even using Firefox which a couple of my users prefer. Thus I would not agree that such behavior as you describe is particularly normal. Not that that comments helps much!!

  • I tunes (7)slow to launch and slow to operate generally

after upgrading to itunes 7 it is now very slow to launch, 45 secs. Also when using the itunes store the same thing happens. Didn't have this problem until "upgrading" to itunes 7

Could be a few things.  Have you installed any programs recently or done any os or software updates?  Have you connected any new hardware?

  • Slow Spellcheck Launch

Hello. I am running InDesign CS6 on a MacBook Air. When I try to run a full spellcheck (not dynamic spelling), the spellcheck takes 2-3 minutes to launch. Once launched, it runs quickly. But the painfully slow startup causes me to not use it like I should

"AppCleaner" is just as useless as "Cocktail," or perhaps worse.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
Here are some general guidelines. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickYourMac.” First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickyourmac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickYourMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickYourMac.” If not, open “BrickYourMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
You may have to log out or reboot in order to complete an uninstallation.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase your boot volume and perform a clean reinstallation of OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" that purport to remove software.

  • Mac Pro 2008 slow application launch after startup?

It seems that my mac pro (early 2008 8-core) is pretty sluggish right after starting up. If I launch Safari it takes it a good 20 secs before I can actually use it. A browser window will open but I get the beach ball while it seems to be loading. There also seems to be a lot of hard drive activity after it first starts up. This also slows the system and you really can't do anything until it has settled down. I have Snow Leopard installed as an upgrade over Leopard. But, it seems to like it was this way with both operating systems.
I have a second internal drive partitioned for boot camp on the original startup disk. So, two internal drives and three external drives. Does this affect speed of overall system?
Anyway, is this common for this model? I just got a Mac Book Pro and it screams in comparison. It starts up and I can launch anything and there is no delay. I could be getting a little spoiled by this new mac.
Thanks for any help or insight!

  • App-V 5.0 memory leak problem & slow program launch

App-V 5 clients with most recent updates have a memory leak problem. Windows 7 64bit workstations with 8GB of memory will be useless within couple of days because memory has run out. Terminating App-V client process will free the memory, but system starts
to consume it again after that. All hotfixes (up to 5) have been installed.
Another problem is that launching some large (locally cached) programs, for example SolidWorks, takes many minutes for a program to start. With 4.6 there wasn't any performance issues.
    Any suggestions?

I saw the exact same issue with slow load times and 50% utilization by AppVClient.exe during that time.

The issue, specifically, is the amount of time the application takes to stage the registry is what causes the slow load and 50% CPU utilization.  I've written a script that stages the registry on your behalf that we use on server startup, after all

  • Slower Startup and Slower app launch time

Hi, ever since i upgraded to lion, my app launch times and laptop startup times have gotten much slower. Please Help!

Re:I have noticed more frequently since the 4.3.2 upgrade is a longer delay when I launch the "Settings"  App.
    (in response to Bruce Caucutt)
I have noticed the same response since I upgrade to 4.3.2 - I have reset the phone after shutting down all the Opened Apps, no change. Checking this out a bit more I found that the 4 sec. White screen only appears if you are Launching the Settings App first time, there after it appears almost instantly. It seems it just taking a little longer to launch in the first instance.

I'm running Snow Leopard (10.6.2 with all recent updates) on a new MacBook Pro, and the first time I launch a video it takes around 20 seconds to launch. Close that one and open a 2nd one and it opens instantly. I did a tweet about it and got a few people saying they have the same problem but didn't see anyone talking about this specific problem in here.
No problems playing the video once it launches, and all other functions are snappy.
Anything i can do about it?

Sometimes the new way search works in iTunes 11 can slow things down and give the spinning beachball.
To rectify this, Cick on the arrow in the search box and untick Search Entire Library. Performance should be better and Search will work like it did in itunes 10

  • Slow application launching - why?

Running Leopard 10.5.1, I've noticed that several times a day, it seems to take far too long to launch even small applications. Opening Preview, for example, took almost 15 seconds. Usually, it opens in less than two seconds. If I start another app while the slow one is starting up, that one takes a long time too, but once things have gotten started, launch times usually go back to normal.
I've watched the console during these times and haven't seen any messages that would explain the problem. Can someone give me an idea of what might be going on? When this happens, it always gives me the sense that something's about to crash...

Well, this machine has 4G RAM, and there's not that much stuff running in the background. There are several things plugged into it, though (external monitor, ipod, 2 usb hubs, 2 printers, 2 external HDs). How would those things interfere with app launching?

  • [SOLVED] Very slow application launch in KDE

Hi, some days ago a nasty makefile tried to delete my / directory while I was trying to compile a program. While it didin't touch anything in my system folders, it made a big mess on my home. I recovered almost everything, but since then KDE is behaving strangely. In particular, launching an application with lancelot or with the standard KDE launcher has become painfully slow. All the KDE applications are affected, but the issue is particularly annoying with firefox. Launching it from the command line, however, resolves everything. Chromium is launched quickly in any case.
I deleted .mozilla and .kde4, but the problem is still there. I have no idea to what look at to try to understand what's going on, so I would appreciate some help...
    Thanks.

Oh, you don't have to rebuild everything. Backup your configuration also, then put it back one by one and see what has gone wrong. (All those hidden files started with a dot ".").
I did mean those files are also important data, who would want to lose all the configuration that took so long to do
Shouldn't take too long to figure it out. If it's my configuration, I think I can find out what wrong in less than 15 minutes.
Good luck if you choose to do so.
