Slow to sleep

I've recently upgraded from a late G3 iBook to a new White Santa Rosa MacBook, with which I'm having some sleep issues.
Firstly, the MacBook will not sleep if inactive. I've set it to go to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity, but this does not happen. The screen goes to sleep, but the hard disk does not.
Secondly, if I close the lid or select 'sleep' from the menu, the hard disk does go to sleep but it takes about 30 seconds. The screen sleeps immediately, but the hard disk remains awake for a further half-minute or so. This is a bit annoying, as I'm used to the iBook sleeping instantaneously, and I'm loath to leave the MacBook with the lid closed and the hard disk active, for fear that it won't sleep and will fry itself.
I've tried resetting the PRAM and the PMU, but to no avail.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

Thanks for your response.
I didn't know about 'safe sleeping' - thanks for that. I just tried restarting. Then, with no applications running, I closed the lid; sleep came more quickly - in 15 seconds, rather than 30 seconds when a few apps are open. Still, 15-30 seconds seems like a long time to me. Is that abnormal? A friend who is also running a MacBook (admittedly, an older version) says that his machine sleeps (hard disk asleep, pulsing LED) virtually instantaneously...
As for my energy saver settings: yes the computer is set to sleep after 10 minutes, not just the screen. And the 'Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible' box is checked, so that shouldn't be the issue.
Any other ideas? Thanks.

A friend suggested I read a MacFixIt note in CNET titled Snow Leopard slow to sleep
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10396408-263.html
For users experiencing this issue, you can narrow down the cause of the slow shut down using a simple Terminal command. Open Terminal and enter:
    pmset -g log
The "Signature" with the longest "Response Time" (in ms) should be the first program to look at. Users should be sure they have updated all their third party applications and plug-ins, especially after updating to Snow Leopard 10.6.2, to ensure the best compatibility.
I did and and there were several small and a few big items but I have no idea what I should
    do about it???

I got lucky! Sleep is now working great again. I am not sure what really fixed
the slow to sleep but one thing I did was to go to the System Preferences/Energy
Saver and used the Restore Defaults and restarted the iMac.
Some things that sound hard are pretty easy to fix. I hope it stays

  • Macbook Pro is slow to sleep after upgrading to Lion; pmset -g question

Two months ago I updated from early '08 MBP from Snow Leopard to Lion and increased my memory from 2GB to 4GB.  In doing so, I noticed that my MBP will sometimes take 30 seconds to go to sleep, regardless of what applications are running.  I've put in an Apple Support ticket, and I have done everything from uninstalling and reinstalling Lion, SMS resets, and last erase harddrive and rei-install Lion and then migrate my user and apps back over.  Incidentally I noticed that when I erased hard drive and re-installed Lion prior to migrating my user and apps over my MBP performed normally (as far as instant sleep is concerned).  After I migrated my apps and user profile back over, the slow to sleep issue re-appeared.
I've seen several articles on the forum regarding pmset -g commands and terminal.  However I'm not familiar with the pmset commands and what they actually mean.  I've also seen articles about chaning the pmset -g, but mostly those are related to MBP with retinas running Mountain Lion.  I did come acress an article that suggested I review my pmset -g assertions to see what may be preventing the slow to sleep issue.  I'm posting this below:
    Assertion status system-wide:
       PreventUserIdleDisplaySleep             0
       CPUBoundAssertion                       0
       DisableInflow                           0
       ChargeInhibit                           0
       PreventSystemSleep                      0
       PreventUserIdleSystemSleep              1
       ExternalMedia                           0
       DisableLowPowerBatteryWarnings          0
       EnableIdleSleep                         1
       NoRealPowerSources_debug                0
       UserIsActive                            0
       ApplePushServiceTask                    0
    Listed by owning process:
pid 8391: [0x000020c7012c0040] PreventUserIdleSystemSleep named: "Address Book Source Sync"
My question concerns the Listed by owning process.  It appears my "Address Book Source Sync" may be interfering with my system sleep.  If so, can someone confirm if my assumption is correct?  It should be noted that I have disabled my iCloud and Exchange address book and yet I still get the sporadic slow to sleep.  Can you tell me what the "Address Book Source Sync" means and what this command means, and if this may be interfering with my sleep?
I'm waiting on a call back from an Apple Senior Technician regarding my case.  Up until now, the technician has seemed to disregard looking at my pmset settings.
    Thanks.

Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
Click the Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About this Mac > More Info > System Report then select Storage on the left under Hardware.
You'll see Available and Capacity. Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.

  • Macbook pro runs really slow after sleep mode

My MBP ( MacBook Pro (13-inch, medio 2012), 2,5 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB), runs very slow after sleep mode. I notice that when I wake it up, my memory usage is nearly 8 GB. After a restart it is back no a normal level, between 2 and 5 GB depending on how many programs I am running. Any ideas what causes this? My IOS is Yosemite 10.10.2

  • Mbp running slow after sleep mode

My MBP runs extremely slow after sleep mode (closing lid). It seems like Safari will take up much RAM. But I use a memory freer which supposedly should solve the problem. So after all I am not sure what is the real cause and what could solve this.
BTW it runs normally after a reboot.
Mine is a mbp 13" refurb purchased in March, 2012.
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB RAM

I too have been noticing problems in slow behavior after sleep mode.  It has gotten so bad I have been restarting it regularly or shutting down much more regularly.  It behaves almost like normal after a re-start.
It is almost like the hard drive is failing? Last time this happened I put a new HD in.  I am usually running a large number of different programs, always multi-tasking, which has been a mac fortie. Seems worse with the last few updates.  My I mac is 24" imac 2008 model. replaced drive just before apple care expired.

  • Mid 2010 macbook pro slow to sleep. No print queu issues.

Hey everyone! My Mid 2010 macbook pro slow is slow to go to sleep. I have read several community forums and I've checked for old print jobs (which seems to be a common issue) and have found none. I've also reset all printers and jobs.  Anyways, it takes 35 to 60 seconds to go sleep (until fan/harddrive turns off/I see blinking white light).  This slow sleep occurs even with a complete fresh install of Mavericks, and even after installing a new SSD. I am honestly at a loss.
I did the "pmset -g log" command and I have found two reoccurring things that I think might be the reason (though I don't really understand it fully). I commonly see "TimedOut InternalPreventSleep "com.apple.powermanagement.darkwakelinger" 00:00:15" commonly and "PreventUserIdleSystemSleep "Address Book Source Sync" 00:00:30".  I have bolded both of these below:

  • Macbook Pro is slow to sleep after upgrading to Lion

I just updated my Early 2008 15-inch Macbook Pro 2.4 Ghz from 2 GB to 4 GB as well as upgraded my OSX to Lion (10.7.5) from Snow Leopard (10.6.8).  I have noticed since the memory and OSx upgrade my Mac is slow to go to Sleep.  It may take up to 30-40 seconds for it to go Sleep.  Sometimes it will instantly go to Sleep, however most of the time there is a significant delay.  I have not experienced any delay or issues when waking up my Mac from sleep status, but it is very slow to go to Sleep now.  In prior versions of OSx my Mac would always instantly go to sleep.  I've researched some discussion threads and I've found some topics relating to resetting the pmset code.  I was hoping someone a lot more knowledgeable than me can help me troubleshoot this issue.  If it is the pmset, can someone give me detailed instructions on what to review and how to correct?  I see where this was posted from a previous thread but alas I'm at a loss on how to correct...https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages /10.7/man1/pmset.1.html.

  • Mouse slow after sleep

    Hello
    I have a 2009 2.8ghz IMAC with 2gb of RAM running 10.5.8 OS.
The mac iteself seems to be of good performance generally, but after coming out of sleep mode, more and more frequently the mouse pointer performance is slow, not reponding quickly to the inputs of the wireless apple mouse I am running (it is a 2009 model)
If I reboot the MAC, the mouse performance is restored. Looking at the mouse performance it is like the processor is labouring, but I do not see this in application performance
I do not think it has anything to do with the mouse mat I am sitting it on as performance is restored with a reboot -
I have run a directory repair (I saw this can fix certain issues) but to no avail.
    Any advice welcomed
    Thx
    Chris

If anyone else has this problem, and this solution doesn't work, here's another one you can try.
I had this very same problem, for months. It was maddening. I tried all the standard solutions in Power Options, Device Manager, BIOS, etc.
I finally fixed it by disabling the Workstation service (one of the many hidden programs that automatically run when you start Windows). The Workstation service is necessary only if your PC is connected to a private network (not the Internet) so you can share
files, printers, and other devices with other computers.  (You can read more about it here: www.theeldergeek.com/workstation.htm)
When you resume from Sleep mode, the Workstation service searches for other computers on your network. Even if they don't exist, in some cases it can still take a while to realize that and release your system back to you. If your PC is NOT on such a network,
you can safely turn it off and avoid this delay.
    1. At the Start menu, type cmd and look for "cmd.exe" in the list above.

  • Macbook Pro "13 2.7Ghz 2011, VERY slow after Sleep

    So, this is the case.
I recently changed from windows to Mac, and by first look, I was very impressed, BUT!!
Ever since I bought the Macbook Pro I have had a little enoyig problem.
Whenever I close the lid or it goes to sleep automatically (cause of the timer), it will be very slow, when I open it up again.
I tested this a few times, justclosing the lid, wait 30 seconds, and then open again (with no applications running exept Safari (1 tab)), and when I try to scroll on Facebook in safari it laggs like I was trying to play Crysis 2 on a N64 =)
Before I close the lid (Before Sleep) everything runs smoothly, but if the computer has gone to sleep I reach a point when I cant work with the computer cause of the enoying lag, and I have to restart the computer.
WHen I restart, everything is good again, even if all the windows comes upp.
Please, are anyone experiencing these problems?
My specc: MacBook Pro 13" 2.7Ghz 4Gb Ram, 2011 version. Running Lion 10.7.1
Hope some of you can help.

There was no big processes running mentioned in the other post, and I didnt quite understand what you ment with the picture, but my Energy Saver (in Norwegian) looks like this. (first picture is on battery and second with power connected)

  • Slow login/sleep after windows update - Yoga 13

I applied some Windows 8 updates earlier today and ever since I rebooted my Yoga has gotten very very slow at logging in and going into sleep mode.
Logging in can take up to 2 minutes (After you enter your password, you see your profile picture and nothing happens..) It used to take 3-5 seconds.
Going into sleep mode is a disaster. It can take anywhere from 1-5 minutes. (Before this it was < 10 seconds.)
I don't have system restore activated, so I can't rollback. Is there any way of fixing this?

Could you try uninstalling the updates through Control Panel > Programs & Features > View Installed Updates
If there weren't that many maybe you could try a restart after uninstalling each individual update to see which was the culprit and then reinstall the others; doing so might well help others who fall victim to the same problem.

  • Windows 7 Pro slow after sleep

    Hi Guys.
This is driving me mad! I have a Lenovo Thinkcentre Edge 71 1577G1G running Windows 7 Pro and every day it starts Ok from sleep but after about 3 minutes its starts to go slow and will not do anything hardly for around 30 minutes, all this time the hard
drive is whirring away and sounds very busy. I have uninstalled Norton which made no difference and there is loads of space. CPU usage in Task Manager is low at around 0-10% but it still won't do anything. It is also slow to respond if left for around 1 hour,
although sleep is set at 2 hours. I have set everything to max performance and removed Lenovo's power saving as I read somewhere this can cause conflict issues all to no avail.
    Any ideas please?

I can tell you this. Norton Internet security is certainly not willing to play nice and hasn't been doing so for quite a while, but because of Norton's aggressive monitoring, I surely cant tell if it is reacting to something that shouldn't be on the system
or being merely overly aggressive, but I suspect the latter.
Secondly, I seem that windows firewall is running and it shouldn't be, because by default, it should have been turned off, the moment Norton or any other third party Antivirus was installed. I suspect that the combination of Windows firewall and NIS, is
probably leading to some conflict and playing a role in slowing performance.

I suggest you remove Norton, install, update and run a complete scan with Microsoft Security essentials. When done scanning with MSE, Download, install, update and do a complete scan of your system with Malwarebytes free, for good measure.
Note: You can keep MBAM and occasionally use it as a "second opinion" scanner. Remove any and all found, reboot and repeat the scans until nothing is found.

  • Slow After Sleeping???

Greetings! My MacBook Pro running OS X Tiger is awesome! And blazingly fast! However, I can't quite figure out why after it has been asleep, it takes so long (like 1-2 minutes) to "recognize" that it is connected to my local network and thusly to the Internet? That is, say I open the MacBook after being gone to work for the day, and it loads great, quick indeed; the icon representing the network connection in the menu bar shows full strength and clicking on it shows me connected to my network. However, Mail will not connect and shows those triangles with the exclamations! And Safari says I am not connnected to the Internet! After the wait which just seems uncharacteristically slow (more Windows like! Ugh!), Mail works and Safari surfs great as usual. Just doesn't seem quite right to me, though admittedly I am a new Mac user and lover! Any ideas???
    Thanks & God Bless!

Well, uh...I indicated my question was "Solved"...alas, the same thing occurred again last night and this morning! It's weird really: I had changed the configurations on the Energy Saver so my MacBook didn't go to sleep quite so quickly; however, I read that the Mac automatically goes to sleep when you close it. Is this true? I was sitting on the sofa, reading emails etc. Then, to take a coffee break, I just closed it and was gone perhaps 10 mins. When I returned and opened it, it showed the little antennae looking icon in the Menu Bar and Mail wouldn't connect and Safari said I was not connected to the Internet. Then, the full signal bars appeared and it showed a check mark next to my network but the weird part: Mail still would not work and Safari still said I was not connected to the Internet!!! This went on for about 2-3 minutes and finally! it connnected and all was well. I have done all as indicated above; Airport is the ONLY thing checked and is at the top of the list in Network Port Configurations! What's going on??? Why in the world would it show me connected and yet Mail and Safari not connect??? Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks & God Bless!

  • Imac running slow after sleep mode

not sure what's going on but i can't use sleep mode on my imac 2010 sl
whenever it wakes from sleep mode it is so slow, even typing an email i'll get the flywheel coming up and a delay in the words i'm typing. every application is slow, i have to a restart for it to start working normally again.
my wife has the same problem with her macbook pro of similar vintage and os.
anyone else have this problem and know a solution?

I too have been noticing problems in slow behavior after sleep mode.  It has gotten so bad I have been restarting it regularly or shutting down much more regularly.  It behaves almost like normal after a re-start.
It is almost like the hard drive is failing? Last time this happened I put a new HD in.  I am usually running a large number of different programs, always multi-tasking, which has been a mac fortie. Seems worse with the last few updates.  My I mac is 24" imac 2008 model. replaced drive just before apple care expired.

  • Slow after sleep if windows are left open?

So my mac is only a few months old but it's been having this odd problem for the last month or so.  If it goes to sleep (either through shuttiing the lid or not touching it for however many minutes) it will be extremely slow for the first 10 minutes or so after I turn it back on, but then it will eventually come back to its full functionality.  However, this only happens if I leave a window(s) open when it goes to sleep. It doesn't matter if it's itunes, safari, or anything else.  Also, if it's playing music but I don't touch it for a while and the display goes black it'll be fine until I try to use the computer again, then all of a sudden the music starts lagging.  So what can I do to fix this?  I've already gone through all the steps of the "10 ways to speed up a slow mac" etc.  The mac in general isn't slow, it's only when I leave windows open and put it to sleep.

    Dear Ruud,
thank you so much for your post on our webforum. I noticed that this is a known issue for Labview 8.6, a while ago it was reported with a Corrective Action Request (CAR# 132471). The issue should be resolved with Labview 2009. I wasn't able to reproduce the issue wit Labview 2010, the number of handles stayed arround 28000,

  • Apple TV extremely slow after sleeping

Hi all, My apple tv early 2012 is extremely slow after its slept.. (by slow i mean the wifi connection, both to internet and airplay)... Its so slow you can't hear a song or anything, it keeps cutting in and out.. I don't know why this is and its starting to annoy me..
It has only been happening recently (last two weeks)  so  far I have tried :
multiple restars = works until the next time it goes into sleep mode or left for a long time
restore = same as above (latest software)
disconnect and reconnect does the same thing.. works until I leave it overnight..
Anyone with any ideas what this could be?
I thought maybe it was my router but none of my other products are doing this : iphone 4  and 5 and two laptops..
There has been no physical damage to the 6 months old apple TV
    Thanks all!

I have a macbook. but after the restore home share hasn't been activated.. its with streaming content from the internet with apple tv itself and also airplay runs extremely choppy
