Slow transfer speeds between Mac Pro and Shared Drive on Windows Domain

Hi Guys,
Getting really slow transfer speeds when I try and transfer a file from a Mac Pro to a shared network drive on one of our Windows 2003 Servers.
The Mac Pro is logged on to windows domain. This data is transferring via our hard network, not via wireless. Not having any other transfer speed issues on any other PC's.
For example an 8mb file took around 45 mins.
Hope you can help. Many Thanks.

I saw this at a site where they were using DFS with Server 2003. When the few Mac's they had connected to the actual server and uploaded the file it was okay. But when it was sending the file via the \\DFS_node\share_name the Mac took heaps longer for the same file. Watching the Activity Monitor > Network monitor you could see gaps with the data transfer, as if there was some pausing between packets. A pcap showed that there was constant DNS requests coming from the Mac, even after the connection to the share was made. The same wasn't happening when the connection via SMB was directly to the actual file server. As there was only a few Mac on site they left it with the direct connection but were getting an MS specialist in to look at it. Never heard what happened with that one but you may want to try monitoring the packet transfer to see if the data movement is contstant or breaking. I'd also recommend getting Wireshark to monitor the transfer. You can compare upload to download and maybe even the transfer from the Mac to an MS workgroup share.

  • Slow transfer speed between existing servers and new servers

I have an issue with copying files to a new HP physical server with Esxi 5.5 host and Windows 2012 Server from anywhere in our current network.
We have an older HP server with Esxi 3 and multiple Windows 2003 vms, including a domain controller, file server and sql server (our current environment).   I installed a new HP DL380 Gen 8 server and installed Esxi 5 and two Windows 2012 servers,
one is a DC and one is a file server (our future environment).
Currently the new 2012 DC a second domain controller; have not made it the first domain controller yet.   The 2012 file server is a member server.  Same network IP range, static, same subnet, same gw.
When I try to copy files from our current environment – to either of the Windows 2012 servers it crawls, like 100kb/sec or less.   It is slow between 2003 and 2012 servers, either direction, and between my Windows 7 and the 2012 server.  Does
not matter if I use windows to copy or robocopy.  It is very fast between the 2003 servers in the current environment and between my windows 7 and the current servers.  Downloads from the Internet do not seem slow.  I have done the following
to try to resolve with no success:
Some forums have suggested disabling Large Send offload on the nic card – usually Broadcom cards, ours are intel, but      I tried it anyway with no success.
Some forums suggested turning off digital signing in group policy, no success.
Some forums suggest SMB2 can be a culprit, I disabled it on the 2012 server with no change in speed.
I made sure all the updates are complete on the new 2012 file server.
Turned the server firewall off to be sure it wasn’t blocking something; no antivirus installed yet.
I contacted Vmware to make sure the virtual switch and nics were set up correctly on Esxi 5, they said they are.
I checked the physical Cisco switch settings to make sure it looked fine.   The current and future physical servers were      all connected to the same physical switch.
I switched out the network cable
I moved the network cable to a different switch.
I checked to be sure DNS was set up correctly.
I checked firewall settings on the Esxi 5.5.
Current HP Service pack is installed on the Gen 8 Server.
I am running out ideas.   Any suggestions?

    Hi,
Would you like to adjust to RSS, NetDMA and TCP Offload?

  • How can i stream(air mirroring) *.mkv files between Mac Pro and AppleTV2 by using quicktimeX?

How can i stream(air mirroring) *.mkv files between Mac Pro and AppleTV2 by using quicktimeX?
    Need support!

How can i stream(air mirroring) *.mkv files between Mac Pro and AppleTV2 by using quicktimeX?
As stated you can't. Even if the compressed data is TV compatible, the container is not. If the file is playback compatible with the QT X Player, you can, of course, play the file on your main system and "mirror" its display to the TV. Unfortunately, this normally means only the video is played back via the TV device. On the other hand, if you convert the MKV content to an TV compatible file (or move the compressed data to an TV compatible container if the data is already TV compatible), then you can mirror the QT X player (with audio) to the TV device in the full screen mode, air play/mirror it from iTunes (or any mobile device), or stream it directly from itunes.
Basically, what you can do here depends on the compressed data in the MKV file container and how you define "mirroring."

  • Difference between Mac Pro and Mac XServer

    Hi,
I wanted to know if there is any difference between Mac Pro and the Mac XServer - at the OS level? Meaning, if I design an application on Mac Pro would it run seamlessly on XServer or do I need to care about a few things.
    Please advise.
    Thanks,
    Abhishek

Both Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server are presently at the Tiger 10.4.10 release, with Mac OS X Server having various added pieces and features, and having a few structural and configuration differences.
    * Do both of them support the ipv6 protocol
Yes; both Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server both offer IPv6.
    * do both of them support LDAP and PAM based authentication
Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server have LDAP support, yes. Mac OS X Server has LDAP authentication, DNS and a variety of other servers built in. Mac OS X is configured as a client, though there is the Apache web server.
Haven't looked for PAM for either platform.
    * Do both of them support the same level of Java ( I understand we need 1.5 or higher for Tiger / Leapord)
Java itself is the same on both Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server, though Mac OS X Server has server-oriented pieces of Java present. And it's still write once, debug everywhere.
No Leopard questions are permissible here at this time; Leopard details are NDA.
    * Do the compilers (gcc) have different compilation options - maybe xServer uses some better optimized flags that handle large volumes of data and network traffic.
AFAIK, there are no differences in gcc defaults. Nor would I expect any. Handling volumes of data is left to the programmer. (I'm not even sure how a compiler author would even implement that sort of difference.)
    * Is there any difference in the behavior of the way the libraries ...
I'd expect the exact same behavior the programmer requested would occur with both platforms.
Now as for what I expect is the root of your question, yes, you'll likely want to test your application on both Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server software platforms. There can exist very hard to predict details such as cases where dual NICs or the aforementioned directory differences that have tossed a few applications off the rails and into the weeds; have caused applications to fail.
You can choose to install Mac OS X Server on a Mac Pro. Probably the 10-client, because you probably aren't planning to serve piles of clients from the Mac Pro.
An overview of Mac OS X Server is here:
    http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/specs.html
Now as to whether or not I would expect run-time differences, no. But I've been at this way too long and have chased way to many weird bugs to make any promises here.

There is something incompatible would be my guess. Did you disconnect all your peripherals in safe mode just to check?
You might now create a new temporary user account. Log into the new account. Do the panics still occur?
I would also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. Sometimes they can be difficult to track down. Looking at each new panic log would help determine if it's cause is associated with the same extensions.

  • Slow Data Transfer Speeds Between Macs.

    Hello Can anyone please help?
When I transfer data between my MacBook and iMac it is taking ages and never used to be this slow a couple of months ago.
A 1 GB file is taking 2 hours. I am using an Airport Extreme 802.11n router on 5GHZ Wide Channel and when I check my connection using Network Utility it says 270 MBit/s.
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks
    Shaun

I am having a very similar issue. I am copying iTunes music to a USB flash drive formatted to FAT32.  It is very slow - not as slow as you have indicated, but still very slow. Someone mentioned it could be Spotlight indexing the USB drive. I am going to turn indexing off and try again - although it is taking a long time just to stop the current copy that I had in progress.

  • Going between Mac Pro and G4 laptop

Hi - I am needing to go out of town for a month and I need to keep working as business as usual with my system. In the past, I would clone my older G4 tower system drive to my G4 Powerbook and then back again when I returned home. This worked perfectly.
    (Using 10.5.7)
Recently I upgraded to a Mac Pro and I know that with the Intel processor I cannot clone back and forth anymore since my Powerbook is a G4.
How can I keep my computer, mostly Mail, Dreamweaver and iCal, synced so I can keep my workflow with a good transition? My data is on a separate external drive that travels with me. I'm not worried about applications as I still have them installed on my Powerbook pretty much in the same way as my MP is set up.
#1 - I really need to have all of my Mail accounts (pop3) data - the sent and received messages - to be duplicated between the two systems before I leave and then when I return to the MP system. My Dreamweaver account settings would be important as well since I need to manage about over 100 different accounts and it helps to keep them current as I am frequently adding and editing account login data.
    Suggestions?

If you copy the entire user folder you will also copy the /Home/Library/ folder. Although this isn't necessarily a problem, if you have PPC plug-ins for contextual menus, preference panes, or input managers they will no longer work on an Intel machine. You would need to replace them with universal binary versions for compatibility. For more about migration from a PPC see the following:

If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking
will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:
    MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) and MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008)- Migration Tips and Tricks;

Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • What's the diference between Mac pro and iMac?

I am really confused with this two things.
I dont know what a Mac Pro is, but I thing is like a CPU?, I mean, can I conect it to my iMac?
    I'm really lost.
Can someone exaplain what's the diference between those two?
and do I can conect to my iMac?
also any full explanation of what a Mac Pro is would be really helpful.

    My iMac specs:

What I do on my iMac is:
Gaming, Maya, After Effects, Nuke, Photoshop, Boujou, Realflow, 3DS Max (soon)
Most of the time working with heavy 3D and Videos.
I wanted to buy other 4GB Ram, and a Quadro 4000 (but its for Mac pro).
My idea was (or still is) to buy a Mac Pro and expand my iMac capacity (processors, Ram, etc, but no one has answered me if i can do that), or else I was thinking if I can buy the Mac Pro and transfer my iMac stuff to it, then use the iMac monitor as a display of the Mac pro just while the iMac sells and then just buy a monitor (but again, no one has answered me if I can do that too)
    Please solve my questions

  • Extend the distance between Mac Pro and display

I'd like to know how to extend the distance between my Mac Pro and its Cinema Display. The Mac is early 2008 as is its display I think. I need a distance of about 5metres.

yes-get a DVI Dual Link Extension cable M/F or M/M. I think you can get 'em around 25 feet max. then you'd need a gender changer, maybe......
depends what you want to pay, though.*cough* monoprice*cough*
    just my opinion

  • Slow transfer speeds between two macs

The general setup: an iMac Intel 20" and an iBook G4 1,2GHz connected via an Airport Express (newest edition), both computers running 10.4.7.
When trying to transfer files via AFP between the two on my local network, I get "tremendous" speeds of about 0.5-1 MB/sec. Why is this so incredibly slow? Is it because of encryption or something similar? I can download off the internet with greater speed than that!

i have exactly the same problem , using a macbook black g1 . slow network speeds and flakey internet . these were ok when I first got the machine . but are now slow as . using the network view of menumeters I see that if i try and shift files from my mac mini they are incredibly slow with menumeters show 0.0kb/s for seconds at a time .
to trouble shoot this problem I used another friends macbook configured with exactly the same settings on this network and the transfer speeds were as they should be which was about 1.5-2.5 megs/sec .
so i figure there is some preference corrupted but which one ?
I have experienced several crashes recently . because of the overheating bug I have the fix applied to my machine and the firmware update . Maybe the network preference got corrupted at that point .
any tips as to which preference to delete would be appreciated .

  • Very slow transfer speed between 2 computers in the same network

    I recently bought a new laptop (Lenove G510) with win 8.1 pre-installed.
When i download files of the internet, my speed is ok, for wireless, but when tranfering files between computers (The other computer is a win 7), the transfer speed is really slow (2-4 MB/s). The transfers takes forever, and are relly unstable. It bounces from 1 - 4 Mb/s all the time and will not stabilize.
The same applys when streaming to other devices (Media Center). The video being streamd will just go frame by frame, and it is no fun watching...
Why is my transfer speed in local networsk so slow?? How can i fix this?
I use AVG Anitvirus, and I have tried disabeling it before transer, whitout results...
I have also updated BIOS, Chipset and the driver for the wireless network card...
I can also mention that when I turn my computer on, the internet connection is lost to all other devices... I then need to reset the router, and then the connection is fine again. This was never a problem before I got Windows 8.1, and is not a problem while the computer is turned of.
In advanced, thansk for any replys/tips

  • Very slow transfer speeds with Airport Extreme and MacBook

I have been using a new Airport Extreme without problem at my home for the past six weeks. The speed and range was excellent with both my MacBook Pro and the MacBook which I purchased a few weeks ago. I came out to Greece with both laptops and a new AP Extreme box for my home network here. After set up I noticed that internet access was lethargic on the MacBook and file transfer between the two computers was extremely slow. The problem seems to be with the new MacBook (although it was working well in London). I've done some speed tests and the internet download speed is only 48 kpbs! I also notice that the range is very poor--in the room next to the router I am down to five bars. If I connect to the AP Extreme with cable I get the full 1Mbps I would normally expect here in Athens (ADSL nominal 2Mbps). The MacBook Pro has no problems with wireless access speeds or range, so I am assuming this has to be a problem with the AP extreme card in the MacBook. Is there anything I have overlooked? Perhaps something to do with setting up the new AP Extreme here in Athens?

By process of elimination I realised that the only cause of the sudden slowness must be software that I had installed recently. The only software I had added was a wifi utility to detect available networks--open or protected. Unlikely as it sounds, quitting the utility (which I had set to load on startup) made a dramatic improvement in performance.

  • Slow wireless speeds on Mac Pro, but only downloads???

I have an "early 2009" quad-core Mac Pro. I also have a Macbook Pro that's a couple of years old. I'm running speedtest.net, with the laptop sitting on top of the Pro. My wireless setup is a several-year-old Airport Extreme base station hard-wired to the Verizon router.
My FiOS speed is 25/15, and that is generally what the laptop gets. When I first started this saga, the Mac Pro was getting about 4/12 on wireless (it is just as fast as the laptop if I hard-wire it). The laptop is also able to see about twice as many wireless networks as the Pro.
I have had the Pro in to the Genius Bar 3 times over the last couple of weeks. I give them credit for trying really hard; they say it actually has better wireless speeds in their store than one of their own Mac Pros, so they are chasing a problem they can't reproduce. The main thing they have done so far is replace the Airport card, which improved my results to about 9/17, but here we seem to be stuck. At this point the store has done everything they can think of, and all they can offer is to give me the names of some Apple certified techs who can come out to my home office (for a fee, of course) and try to trouble-shoot it here.
What I find most perplexing about this is that it's only download speed. I would think if there was some sort of interference, which is what they are thinking, it would affect both. And it would affect the laptop too.
I have a brand-new Airport base station that I will try setting up, but I don't have high hopes. I can also try upgrading to Snow Leopard, but that is a big time sink that I'm not quite ready for yet (I like to do a full install when I upgrade).
Does anyone have any other suggestions or tips on where else to research this?
    Thanks in advance!

  • AirDrop between Mac Pro and Iphone 6 not working

    Dear Team,
I have been using Mac Pro since Late Dec 2012. My version of Mac is Mac book Pro (13 Inch, late 2011) with Yosemite 10.10.3 version. I have recently bought iphone 6  ios (8.3).My Mac is not providing me an option for "Allow me to be discovered by". I have searched all my setting, I could see any option.
    Please help me and suggest.

  • Icloud sync only works between mac pro and windows outlook, not with iphone and ipad anymore

    Hi
Can anyone help me with my problem?
I do have icloud installed on my MacBookPro, on my Windows Outlook computer, on my iPad 2 and on the iPhone 4S.
Now until yesterday everything synchronized perfectly well.
Then I created some groups on my MacBookPro address book and since then (I believe that was when it started) icloud no longer synchs from and to the ipad and the iphone. It still works between the Mac and Windows Outlook.
On the iPad/iPhone I have tried everything but it still won't do. I have even reset the whole iPad and obviously lost all data and tried again. I all sometimes get is a few contacts back into the address book on the ipad. But only a limited number, not all.
Also, to delete the icloud account on the ipad/iphone is sometimes not possible. It just hangs and I can see the message "Deleting..." for ever.
    Anyone an idea?
    Thanks in advance!

One more comment. Wired connection seem to be stable neither. I have ping running to the Windows computer and after a couple of minutes, it gets broken.
However if I have both WiFi and cable connection to the home router and disconnect from cable (after ping is broken), I get the network to the Windows comptuer back. Nothing serious on the network change, I just get 192.168.1.x instead of 192.168.1.y as IP).
During this network switch I do nothing with the Windows computer.
This is not valid if I want to connect to the Windows computer via Microsoft sharing (smb://192.168.1.x), then it immediately breaks the connection. Can't get it back until Windows is restarted.
    Getting lost...
