Slow Typing In Mail: A Permanent Fix???

Ultra slow typing in Mail seems to be a Leopard "feature". Quitting and starting again, restores a semblance of good behaviour. Not as fast as, say, TextEdit, but acceptable. And then it starts slowing down once again... until one quits and restarts.
This seems to be a bona fide bug. Is there a "true" fix?

Thanks Pascal. I know that many users do not have this problem, which is kind of infuriating if you see what I mean... :-))) My only plug-in is SpamSieve which never caused me any problem until Leopard. I tried with or without SpamSieve, and the same problem reappears - slowing down after a few days, until I restart.
I must add that Mail never caused me any problems until 10.4.11 included. Never. This is something new... Next move: I am going to search and destroy any plist file associated with Mail. If it doesn't work, I will reinstall Mail from scratch.
Other users have reported the same problem here, and their posts went unanswered. Their only work-around was also to quit and restart. Strange.

The "Slow typing in Mail" issue continues in Lion. Has anyone found a fix yet?

Well, when typing in MAIL, the letters manifest VERY SLOWLY. I am know ACE typist, and it can't keep up with me. I type even a few characters, and wait for several seconds for my textual desires to appear.
This was well discussed under Snow Leopard, I see.
Restarting the App often helps for several minutes, but no more.

  • Slow typing in Mail

    Hi all,
The key delay in Mail is getting longer and longer. I used to fix this by deleting the file: com.apple.security.plist.bak from Mac HD > Preferences and it worked fine.
I just went to Mac HD > Preferences and there is no com.apple.security.plist.bak file.
Any ideas on where it could be, or if there's another way to fix the problem? Please, no directions to typing code into Terminal. I've tried this and it was a real headache to fix.
    Thanks,

  • Slow hesitant typing in Mail

I found some older posts on this and folks there seemed to get no help so I thought I would start a fresh post on this subject...
When Leopard arrived, I switched from Entourage to Mail.
I have had no problem until the last month.
Now...when I type a line...Mail waits for while before finishing what I have written.
It's not just happening occasionally...it's happening a lot.
    I rebuilt my envelope index.
I did the terminal tricks and they did speed up opening mail and moving around in Mail
but it did nothing about this problem.
    I have disk warriored...trashed logs...trashed caches...fixed permissions...etc etc etc.
    No change.
Some people report that restarting seems to help but after 5-10 emails, it starts again.
I see the same thing on my mac.
BY THE WAY...is there a bug in the board here?
Above this text box, I see:

    ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

I'm having the same issue with slow typing in mail. It is confined to mail.app and is absolutely killing me. Everything was running fine one day, then the next I had this mail issue. I send emails all day long, and am being forced to switch out of mail.app (my preferred program) and into something else because of this problem.
I can find no fix, no matter how hard I search for one. Has anyone found a cure for this?

  • Some emails are there when searching, but do not show up in inbox for mail account. How do we permanently fix that? This is dangerous for businesses that rely

    Hi, and thanks,
I noticed that many dozens of others have expressed the same problem with Thunderbird, but it still continues.
For no apparent reason, sporadically, some emails don't show up in the inbox list of an account, but are actually there. If we're told later that someone sent one, and if we do a search at that time, it does come up!
We rely on this for business, and wouldn't know to search if we are unaware that an email has come in but simply doesn't appear in the list. We have actually lost significant business $ on 3 separate occasions, from clients who have said they emailed us, but we never responded! (That's really bad, and even worse because they also won't use us any more.)
Obviously, we of course would not want to have to check with the webmail host when we have Thunderbird. So...., how can we permanently fix this problem so it never, ever occurs??? We used to use Eudora before switching, and this never happened.
Some blogs say to delete one of the files in the system to re-index the inboxes, but again, that would not be the answer, because we wouldn't know to do that, nor when to do that, since some emails, without a warning or clue, occasionally simply don't show up in the list at all.
Please let us know the permanent and complete fix for this ASAP.
    Thanks so much,
    Les Pock

Lers, I have used Thunderbird for the best part of a decade and have only once experienced something similar to what you describe and it was a corrupt database.
So lets just back up a bit.
If you want mail to flow without issue the first bullet to bite is anti virus.
    * Scanning of outgoing mail is a total waste of time and an added risk for no return. You anti virus already certifies your machine clean.
    * Scanning of incoming mail is of extremely limited value. Thunderbird does not allow scripts in email, so there is no bug that will junmp out and start running even if your mail is not scanned and it contains a virus. The exception to that is attachments. But they are not dangerous either, unless you try and open them. Even then your anti virus should be monitoring the temporary folder on your computer and blocking any attempt to write the infected file, let alone execute the contents.
    * Scanning of your mail folder likewise is of limited value, but is more than often the cause of mail indexes not being updated. These days anti virus program appear to scan everything. Every file as it is accessed and opened. Thunderbird often has quite large files to store mail, up to 4Gb is not all that uncommon. Anti virus program take about 2 minuted per Gigabyte to scan files. So it can be the case that the anti virus is scanning while Thunderbird is timing out waiting for access to the appropriate files.
To make things more efficient exclude your Thunderbird mail profile folders from on access scanning by your anti virus program. The folders contain NO executable programs, and a weekly scan along with the rest of your computer with Thunderbird closed should be more than adequate. Perhaps scheduled for1am Friday. Gives Friday to deal with anything found and does not interrupt your use of the device.
A similar exclusion can also be beneficial for other data storage areas (databases especially)
Finally look at what processes run on your computer. there aerew by default about 40 when it is new and over time this grows with almost every security, office or game you install until your computer is so busy running background processes to check if the latest versions of XXXX has been released that it becomes sluggish and performance on most things is degraded (That common nugget of Windows computers getting slower over time is TRUE, but a large part of that is added processes and security software which is actually reducing performance quite extensively.)
BTW right clicking a folder, selecting properties and the repair button rebuilds the index non destructively as deleting the files as you mention also looses tags.

  • Mail slow typing

Since upgrading to Yosemite, I have experienced slow typing when composing a message in Apple Mail.  Frequently, the letters appear on the screen 5 seconds after they are typed.  It is so slow that the Mail program is essentially unusable.  I posed this problem to Applecare and, after five attempts to correct the problem, I gave up.  It seems they don't know what is causing it.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem?  Does anyone have a solution?

When the lag is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

I have an older MacBook Pro Mid 2012 with conventional hard drive running same OS and same Thunderbird version 31.4.0 and there is no slow typing whatsoever.

  • After upgrading from acrobat 9.5 to XI pro my users have complained on slow typing when filling in form that were created in version 9.5?

After upgrading from acrobat 9.5 to XI pro my users have complained on slow typing when filling in form that were created in version 9.5?
The issue is they type but there is 2 second delay when it appears in the field.
    Windows 7 64bit

I see, I misread your reference to Reader 11 to mean you were using Acrobat 11, but it looks like it worked out anyway.
The base-14 fonts are special in PDF because they are guaranteed to be available even if they are not embedded. If you select a non-base-14 font for use with a form field, the entire font usually gets embedded, since each glyph it contains has to be available for use with the field. This can take up a lot of space if you do this a lot, and the space isn't reduced if you change back to a base-14 font later because the internal reference to it is not removed. This is caused by the bug I mentioned.
In your case, however, the entire font doesn't get embedded because fonts like it (e.g., large asian fonts with a lot of glyphs, Arial Unicode) would take up too much space if fully embedded. If it did, a 100KB PDF could bloat to 20MB with that one change. Instead, users are expected to have such fonts installed on their system, which is why you were prompted to install the font pack. This despite the fact that the font was not actually used by anything in your document, it was simply the orphaned reference to it that triggered this. This should get fixed in Acrobat eventually so this type of thing doesn't happen again.

  • Information on the "slow typing" issue

I think I've uncovered a (maybe the) cause of the slow typing complaints that's worthy of a new topic. I had severe problems with the trifold brochure, and found that some other templates also were "slow typing" templates. After reading all the posts here, with at least a dozen different fixes, none of which fixed my particular probelm, I started experimenting. What I found was interesting.
All my problems with slow typing (seeing the results of key presses show up on-screen seconds after the event) were traced to one single problem - a table format. When text flowed around a table with its Text Fit choice as "Wrap text to follow a square border", typing was slow. With the Text Fit choice changed to "Wrap text to follow the contour", typing was fast. Seems too simple.
This change made a HUGE difference in the trifold brochure, and a noticeable difference in a couple of the others that I tried. Some tables, especially those with pictures, not text, are disguised and not easy to recognize, so if you're having the notorious "slow typing" problem, look carefully at tables in your document as a possible cause.

I am a scientist who needs to write grants and papers with long text sections and embedded figures. I LOVE the way Pages handles graphics but even with a 12 page document with 3 small tables and 2 figures I am waiting 10-20 seconds for the typing to catch up (doing all the suggestions in these threads)! Together with the fact that there is no direct link to referencing programs like Endnote (which I am forced to use to interact with PC-based colleagues) makes Pages decidedly less useful than the Phantom Menace - MS Word. That beast uses 1/3 the CPU percentage and works faster in general than this lean, mean, Apple product. NOTE TO APPLE: Please please please bring users like me back from the dark side!!

  • Slow typing problem

I am having a problem where the type on the screen in Pages 2 can't keep up with my typing speed. I only type about 40-40 words per minutes. This was not a problem in Pages 1. Help...

    Hello Appraiser,
there are a lot of posts about this issue in this forum. To maximize the respond of Pages is to:
    1) Hide the thumbnail view with the menu: "View/Show(Hide) Thumbnails".
    2) If there are a lot of images, shapes or tables, use the wrap option "follow contour" and not "rectangle" in the bottom section of the wrap inspector.
    3) If there are a lot of images, shapes or tables with the fix positioned oprion set, Pages has to recalculate a lot the text positiones, because there is heavy text flow in long sections. Try to avoid that.
Do a search for "slow typing", there are more advices and suggestions.
    Frank.

I keep getting the spinning wheel, and macbook pro seems to be slowing down.  How do i fix this without buying software?

Go to system profiler and report back the amount of RAM that you have.
Make sure that you have at least 20% of your hard drive free.
Make sure you don't have a lot of items on your desktop as that can slow things down.
Quit applications that aren't responding or you aren't using and won't be using for a while.
~/Library/Caches Quit all applications and delete this folder. Do a regular delete then do a secure erase on all the items that won't delete.
If it only happens with a certain application (Safari for example)...
    1. Quit the application (Safari)
    2. Open ~/Library/Preferences and find the file for safari (com.apple.Safari.plist).
    3. Put the file in the trash. Do NOT empty the trash yet. Open the application and make sure everything's ok. Now you can delete the file. In Mail if you trash the file, you will get rid or your setup.
Make sure that your dashboard doesn't have too many widgets and use Activity Monitor to see what it's using.
There are ways to disable if you want to.
Make sure that all of your software is up to date.
    Repair permissions (it can't hurt)
Don't have a lot of login items.
Your internet browser shouldn't have a lot of extensions.
    I hope this helps
    Chris

  • Permanent fix for disabling safe sleep?

I am frustrated with my MacBook Pro's safe sleep 'feature'. I found the standard way of de-activating it (with the pmset commands), and this works in the short term, but within a few days, either through changing the energy settings or other ways, it always reverts to the original setting of having safe sleep activated.
I found SmartSleep, which allows one to turn off safe sleep without typing the pmset commands, but no luck - after a few days, it will revert to safe sleep.
This is very frustrating, and I'm not sure how to permanently disable this. I have read people suggesting writing a startup script, but I hardly ever reboot my laptop (the only times I have are after typing the pmset commands!) so this wouldn't really solve the problem.
Does anyone know of a permanent fix for this?
    Thanks!

The terminal commands are the most permanent way you'll find.
Here's the issue: If you launch Energy Saver and choose ANY of Apple's pre-defined settings like "longer battery life," safe sleep is automatically turned on. To avoid this, you must avoid selecting any of the default power configurations. You can still manually set the sleep and display timers, you just can't use Apple's predefined profiles.
Make sure you delete the virtual memory space reserved for safe sleep after you disable it, too. Here's the link:

  • Keyboard input performance (slow typing) on Mac OS Mavericks

After installing Mac OS Mavericks, the typing performance in Dreamweaver CC 13.1 is very slow, almost to the point of unusability.
I am aware of this discussion, however that discussion started before Mavericks was released, and there has been no acknowledgement on Adobe's part of what may be a newer issue related only to Mavericks. To further support this, I did not have any issues with keyboard input performance while on Mountain Lion.
So I'm hoping with this thread I can get some confirmation that Adobe is seeing the issue in Mavericks, and is planning a fix in the next update - which hopefully will be coming very, very soon because as I said it's almost unusable now and I saw in the other thread people are even cancelling their subscriptions over this.
    Thanks,

  • Slow typing in DW CS6 / OSX?

Is anybody experiencing really slow typing in DW CS6 on a Mac?
Regardless of what I type, the code only apears at a rate of 3 characters per second!  Does anybody know what may be causing this?  Is it an incompatability, a bug, or some rendering issue???
I'm running this on an old MacPro1,1 / NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256 MB with 8GB Ram, SSD drives OSX Lion 10.7.3.
This slow behaviour is not noticed on other CS6 apps...
The purchased product was an upgrade - downloaded from Adobe:
Adobe Creative Suite 6 Design & Web Premium (Mac,English)
Looking forward to a resolution, as it's pretty terrible.
    Luis.

    Hi again,
    (purchased version)
MacPro 1,1 : 2.66GHz 4 core (the original problematic machine)
I've just upgraded to OS X 10.7.4, and it appears to be much better (possibly a combination of the reboot!).
The typing is now only slightly slow - not too bad at my typing speed, but it could annoy faster typers.  Still - it's much faster than 3 characters per second.
The CPU usage, however still remains.
Within the body tag of a new html file, if I type any text the CPU usage for the Dreamweaver process leaps from 1.5% to 58%.
Again, this drops down the second I stop typing, and goes back up when I resume.
I have no DW CS6 extensions enabled on this machine.
NOTE: When I returned to DW6 to disable the RELATED FILES option, it had gotten really slow again (so it slowed down after some time passed).
Disabling the Related Files Option seemed to fix that slowness, but then that required a re-launch which could have masked the elapsed time bug (possibly a memory leak?).
HOWEVER, the CPU usage remains very high whilst typing, regardless of perceived slowness, or status of RELATED FILES option.
On a slower, but newer MacPro 4,1 : 2.26GHz 8 core ; running 10.6.8 with same SSD & RAM, the fresh installation runs quickly (without post-install reboot) and the CPU only goes to 20% whilst typing in the same situation.
I have no DW CS6 extensions installed on this machine.
I have an old MacBook Pro 2,2, also on SSD with 2GB RAM currently on 10.7.3  I'll do some tests on it when I get a moment, but this may have to wait until next week.
