Slow, unresponsive Finder.

Downloaded a security update this morning and after restarting the computer the computer is completely unresponsive. Applications take 3-4-5 minutes to launch, many freeze while starting.
I have checked and repaired the start up disk, through Diak Utility. The HD is ok.
Still it is no good. Could any one help?
I'm trying to do a backup but the computer takes forever.

If it will let you, can you open up Activity Monitor during this period and see what's hogging the CPU?
Although this in itself will use some CPU, maybe temporarily set AM as a login item. That way it'll open up as soon as it can.
And check all these

  • Slow start- finder unresponsive

I have started having isues with my 27" imac.  It does not get restarted very often and I can't tell you when the last time it was restarted before this week but this is what happens now:
First time or two I restarted it took 3 or 4 minutes to get to the desktop and when I did get to the desktop the finder was unresponsive for at least another 3-4 minutes.  It would finally start working normally.  I disabled all log in items and the time to get to the destop has improved but the unresponsive finder remains.
    I have:
booted to a back up (created with carbon copy cloner) and checked the hard drive with disk utility- all comes comes back good, by the way when I booted to the back up drive it too booted slowly and had the unresponsive finder for several minutes
ran apple hardware test and everything came back good
Is there a corrupted plst file or something?  any other suggestions?
    Jeff

  • Ever since my iphoto library crashed (ran out of space without warning) my mcbook pro has been slow, unresponsive, freezes in sleep mode and won't restart... please help.

    Hi everyone
Ever since my iphoto library crashed (ran out of space without warning) my mcbook pro has been slow, unresponsive, freezes in sleep mode and won't restart...
I've since backed everything up on an external hard drive, removed the corrupt library, even reinstalled the operating software and there is now hardly anything on the hard drive, it still runs painfully slow. If I close the lid which puts it in sleep mode, it either doesn't go into sleep mode but instead the battery just gets drained and I find it completely empty of power (it won't start again unless plugged in), or it goes into sleep mode but just freezes when I try to reopen.
In iphoto (reinstalled) but even other applications it is painfully slow, not like a mac at all!
I am trying to go to genius bar with it but thinking maybe someone in this forum can help...
    Many thanks
    Andre

Have you tried SMC and PRAM resets?

  • Slow, Unresponsive, Spinning Wheel - Help!!!!!!!!!!

I am running Snow Leopard on a iMac 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 3GB RAM.
Just over a week ago my machine started being extremely slow, unresponsive and displaying the spinning wheel. At times it won't restart, it gets stuck either on the blue screen or the logo screen.
At first I tried repairing disk and disk permission, but this didn't help.
Next, I tried a clean install of Snow Leopard and restored my full backup from Time Machine. However, the problems persisted. I even tried repeating this a few times.
Then I tried, clean install with restoring the full backup and the machine seemed to be working with stalling, hanging, spinning wheel, etc...
But then I started doing fresh installs of my applications and restore some important files from Time Machine and the problems have returned.
This morning the machine would become unresponsive and it would take at 5-10 minutes for the spinning wheel to disappear and then as soon as I suggest using an application the wheel would return. Eventually, I restarted the machine, but it sticks on the logo screen and still now I can only start in safe mode.
I do not fully understand the information in Activity Monitor but I cannot see anything obvious, although, WindowServer and kernel_task appears to use a lot of CPU/Memory at times.
    Can anyone help?

Only one DVD came with the computer
System discs come in pairs. Disc #1 is the install disc which includes AHT. Disc #2 is the bundled software - restore disc.
You need to let Apple know that you are missing a system disc. You will need to provide Apple the computer serial number in order to get the correct one - US (800) 767-2775. If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those -
    http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html
    Drop-in DVD
Never heard of those. What is a "drop-in?"

  • Remote iPhone App Slow to "Find" Apple TV

In the past few days, the Remote iPhone and iPad app have been slow to "find" our Apple TV (3rd Generation).  It can take up to 3 minutes to connect to the Apple TV and sometimes only "finds" it after I unplug/plug in the Apple TV.
I have restarted our wireless router, tested the network connection on Apple TV, double checked that Home Sharing is turned on (though, admittedly, sometimes it is not able to find my Library), turned Apple TV on/off multiple times as sometimes it is the only way I can get the remote app to find the Apple TV.
The Apple TV remote seems totally dead.  I never got a low battery message, but while the iPhone and iPad are listed as "paired remotes" in the Settings, the regular Apple TV remote is not listed at all.  I tried to pair it (holding menu+right) but nothing happens.  The Apple TV doesn't flash or anything when I try to use the aluminum remote.
Thanks for any other ideas to troubleshoot.

SOLVED for me by restarting my iPhone 5. Power off completely and powering back on.

  • Palm Desktop is slow to find when there are no hits

Palm Desktop PalmDesktop 4.2.1revD is excruciatingly slow on Mac OS X 10.6.7 when "Locate - Find" or Command F to find something if there are no hits.
In other words, if Palm finds hits, then it is fast (finds them in almost real time), but if there are no hits, it takes 20 seconds to show that "No matching items were found).
    How to fix it?

It shows a staggering number of errors on your hard drive. Back up everything now, then boot from your recovery partition and see if Disk Utility can repair your internal hard drive. IF it can;t you may be looking at a new drive.
There was an Apple repair extension program for the 1TB Seagate hard drives in 2009 27-inch iMacs but it has now expired. If you did not take advantage of that program, a failing HD could be the issues.
Adding RAM might help too, but you must get the hard drive issues sorted first.

  • Unresponsive Finder

Hi, I am a g5 user with a 10.5.7 OS. I made a very stupid mistake the other day when my computer started running slow and the pinwheel kept coming up every time I went to crop a picture on iphoto '09. I went and re-installed iphoto '08 thinking it would solve this issue, but then it slowed everything down even more and now I can't open iphoto at all, it won't launch. I called the phone service and he advised to reload "09 and it would solve the problem. Wrong it got worse, now I can't open my finder - it is unresponsive. At this point I am in a panic and need help. Has anyone gone through this? I can't get into my finder so I cannot open any applications. Can anyone help me please?

Since the Apple Script information didn't make that much sense to me I followed another persons advise and copied this:
    mkdir ~/Documents/FilesFromMyDesktop
    find ~/Desktop -type f -depth 1 -exec mv {} ~/Documents/FilesFromMyDesktop \;
into the terminal which solved all my problems immediately by removing all my files from the desktop and placing it in my documents where I could delete them without any problems.

  • Slow, unresponsive system...PLEASE HELP!

    Hey guys,
I've been having issues for the past couple of days...nothing is seriously wrong, everything has just become very slow and unresponsive. Even with no apps open, just moving a Finder window about is very jerky and it takes time for the window to catch up with your mouse. Moving through the menu bar (just the finder with nothing else open) seems to be an effort and it takes a while for the the blue selection to catch up with the mouse curser.
It's done a few other things that seems strange; when launching one app (Safari for example) and clicking on the desktop to access the finder menu bar, it will still display the Safari menu - only hiding the app or minimising the window will enable you to access the Finder menu. I've also been unable to deselect anything in a folder or on the desktop (ie. I couldn't click on the desktop background to deselect all drives and files/ folders, I could just click from one to the other to select them).
Curser selections are also an effort and no matter how slow you click and drag it seems to miss the first few characters or words in the selection (if that makes sense?!). If I click and drag at the speed I normally would it will miss the first few sentences in a paragraph.
I've performed a hardware test and everything passed.
    I've reset the PRAM.
    Disk Utility flags up the following;
ACL found but not expected on "Applications/Utilities".
ACL found but not expected on "Applications".
ACL found but not expected on "Library".
which it has done since installing 10.5, but takes about 10 minutes to verify the disk.
Oh, and I've got 86GB free on my startup disk. As I said, everything IS working, just working very slowly. The only app I've installed recently is Skype, and I've got nothing in my startup items folder.
    Any comments are much appreciated.

  • AFP Directory Listings via VPN very slow in Finder

    Hello all!
I recently exchanged my existing Apple iMac Core2Duo (with Mac OS X 10.6.8) to a brand new iMac 27" i7 (10.9.4). Besinde to this new iMac I´m using a MacBook Pro 15" (with 10.6.8). WLAN/Airport is turned off; only Ethernet / LAN is used.
My problem right now is: since the upgrade to OS X Mavericks we are experiencing server problems, browsing AFP shares on remote servers (VPN). The Directory Listing is very slow an can take up to 30 minutes for large listings. I can't browse network folders with Finder because it's too slow. It takes forever just list all the subfolders. If I try to transfer or open a file, everything is fine and I can do it at the right speed.
    Here's the setup
2 networks are connected thanks to a VPN connection.
All clients, in all connected networks can communicate to a common fileserver (MacPro with OS X 10.6.8 SnowLeopard Server) in Network A
Firewall is not an issue between those networks
The clients authenticate via OpenDirectory and Kerberos to the fileserver
So the problems occur if i want to connect a client on network B to the server on network A. Connection, authentication, ... all good. Even the performance over the VPN, to tranfer files is OK. But browsing subfolders is catastrophic. I used AFP , results are the same. I also made tests on older clients, to see if the fileserver is the problem. 10.6 and 10.8 clients can browse normally, speed is OK.
So my question: What can I do to accelerate the browsing of my AFP/SMB shares for all my Mavericks clients? What can I do to speed up the Directory Listing? And yes: i know about solutions like PathFinder, TotalFinder, .... but i'm more interested in a native solution to this problem.
    Thx!!
    OS X Mavericks (10.9.4), 10.6.8 Server

This has been a major issue in Mavericks all along.   SMB has been a total disaster for anyone who works with MACs on a corporate network, causing admins night terrors, anxiety disorders, and general sadness.    10.9.4 + some server side fixes (smbcreditsmax and smbcreditsmin)  fixed many of the issues, but the slow finder listings over VPN connections is still unusable.  the only workarounds i know of are:
    - switch to windows
    - downgrade to mountian lion
    - use FTP or webDav protocols
    - use a 3rd party finder replacement:  mucommander     (clunky additional app but works!)
I will be testing Yosemite beta this weekend, i have heard reports that some of this nonsense is fixed.

  • Macbook Pro (2010) slow/unresponsive booting OSX from Windows

    Hello All,
Let me introduce myself. My name is Josh and I am currently deployed in Afghanistan and also pursuing an Info Sec degree. As such I was forced to boot camp Windows 7 on my Mac in order to complete certain classes needing Windows and Windows software. I am running into some issues that I can not seem to work around. First I will give the stats of my computer then try to explain the issues I am encountering.
    Macbook Pro 13inch  Mid 2010
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    16GB memory
    Crutial 256 GB SSD
    OSX 10.9.2
    Windows 7 Professional
    New battery
I partitioned the SSD in half for both Windows and OSX. Each has around 30 GB of data on each side. I installed the SSD and memory around 6 months ago and everything worked flawlessly. Needing Windows and being cheap I decided to dual boot, through bootcamp, the two operating systems. Install, although a pain, was completed sucessfully and worked great. It has been installed for about 3 months and ran flawlessly. I have kept up with updates on both sides and running antivirus on Windows. I rarely do any work besides school on Windows but run the antivirus regularly for protection. These issues arose a few days ago. One issue I encounter periodically is that when booting to Windows I hold down the control key and it still loads OSX. I have to try several times to get it to boot Windows. Sometimes it works first try. Once in Windows everything works as it should and fast with the memory and SSD. When I shut down the computer and return to OSX everything loads as normal with the same speed except when I go to open an application. It takes several minutes of spinning wheel for it to open. Until then it is slow and often unresponsive. If I let it run its course it will eventually calm down and work correctly. During this time the fan kicks on. Another issue is that sometimes one of my external hard drives fails to read. I can unplug and plug it back into each of the USB hubs with no luck. The two external hard drives I have are one for Time Machine backups- 1TB Western Digital and the other for all my work- 1TB Western Digital. Each hard drive is scanned with Windows 7 during antivirus checks. Finally, I installed a new battery, as mine was gone, and since the install I do not get the same life span out of a charge (around 5 hours max with little use). If anyone has any advise please feel free to contribute. I would like to solve the issue. Thank you for your time and if you need any more information I would happily provide.
Also: I will be creating another thread for two more Macbook Pros I am working to resolve issues.
    Josh

    Josh,
have you tried resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller, to see if it would have any effect on your battery life and fan frequency?

  • Slow/unresponsive video playback, media pending, after CC'14 October update

Encountering a strange issue after the October update. It's a project carried over from the previous CC'14 version, nothing crazy, about an 18 minute timeline of video/.mov clips straight off a JVC GY-HM600U with simple RGB curves/masks on some clips, some Prores422 clips of graphics exported out of After Effects, a couple nested sequences featuring simple text w/ cross dissolves, and a lower 3rd Quicktime with RGB+Alpha. There are some linked AE comps in the project but not in the sequence. Ran fine before update. Here's my system, obviously no CUDA so Mercury Playback is software only:
Upon opening the project everything is fine, playback is smooth, scrubbing from beginning to end no problem. After a period of time, 10-15 minutes? Suddenly video playback hangs up, with audio continuing to play after . Opening a clip in the Source window displays the Media Pending thumbnail, after 15 seconds it seems to find the media but again it's only a still frame with video hanging up. Then audio seems to hang up and I can't do anything. I can still manipulate the UI but scrubbing through the timeline is completely unresponsive, pressing play does nothing.
Quitting the program seems to freeze it, the window closes but it stays lit up in my dock and shows Application Not Responding, causing me to force quit.
A system reboot yesterday seemed to clear the issue up for the remainder of the work day but it's back today. Not sure where the issue is coming from, but seems like some kind of memory leak or something similar since it seems to be a gradual degradation in performance. I'll have to roll back to a previous version to finish up this project until things are fixed.

    Hello,
Many thanks for your very long reply and your interest in my problems.
I shall try to answer you :
    - 1) OS :  Windows 7 64 bits Pro SP1, french,
                     Version : 6.1.7601.18247 (Win7RTM)
                     Framework.NET : 4.0.30319.18408 built by : FX451RTMGREL)
                     DirectX : 11.0,
                     OpenGL : 6.1.7600.16385 (Win7_rtm.090713-1255).
    - 2) Yes the media pending goes away but after a couple of minutes (one
year ago I was using PP CS6 and Encore CS6, I never had this problem
    even with very long files),
    - 3) Yes my GPU driver is updated (Nvidia GeForce 332.21 dated 12/19/2014).
I never had thiese problems with PP CS6 + Encore CS6 and my projects
built with these PP ans Encore version were with the same structure and
length (in PP CS6 : sequences up to 45 minutes, in Encore CS6 chapters
    up to the same time).
The difference between are in my hardware :
    - the RAM was upgraded from 12 GB to 24 GB,
    - the CPU was overclocked from 3,2 GHz (default) to 3,88 GHz).
    - 4) I shall try up to the disk burn to check if the problem is just due
    to display of "animated buttons".
I hope my answer will be usefull for you.
    Regards,
    Jacques Gourier.

  • Slow loading Finder in Mavericks?

I bought the brand new Macbook Pro Retina that came with Mavericks plus I upgraded my old Macbook Pro Retina to Mavericks before my new one came. On both computers I am noticing a few different things that are rather annoying.
When attaching documents to emails, etc... it is taking my finder forever to load the contents of the directory I am trying to access. It is doing this on both computers, so I am assuming this is something to do with Mavericks and not the new computer. It is rather frustrating because for my job, I am contstantly attaching documents to emails every day, but having to wait a good minute or two for a directory to load to find what I am looking for to attach is getting rather annoying.
Even my stickie notes load slow now when opening them in Mavericks and it has never done that before. They kind of appear laggy when loading. Usually they just popped right up.
Is anybody else experiencing this problem? Any suggestions for a fix? I really enjoy Mavericks but it seems to be messing with the overall performance of some things.

This problem really negates any benefit that Mavericks may offer simply in the reduced productivity this slowness creates. I really struggled with it and was seriously contemplating reverting to the previous version of Mac OS X Mountain Lion. However, on reflection, I identified one of the features of Mavericks that could be responsible. App Nap.  As I understand it, App Nap is designed to conserve energy and automatically slows down applications that are loaded but not currently active. If this is the case and it is applied to the Finder, then this could be the cause of our frustrations. On most Apps. in Maverick, using Get Info will present amongst other options, an opportunity to disable App Nap for the specific application. However, this option is not available for the Finder app. (/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder/Contents/MacOS/Finder).
I checked with Activity Monitor and discovered that the Finder process did get App Napped if unused so how to disable the App Napping? Happily, after some Googling, I came across these folks who had the answer:
    http://www.tekrevue.com/tip/disable-app-nap-os-x-mavericks/
So I opened terminal and issued the following command:
sudo defaults write com.apple.Finder NSAppSleepDisabled -bool YES
Hey Presto, finder appears to be restored to its normal operating speed.
I suspect that to reverse this step, the above command should be issued with the argument NO.
If you try this, you do so at your own risk but I wanted to share it because of the frustrating impact it is having to so many folks.
Good Luck and please let me know if it works for you.

  • External HD slow in finder: list loading very slow

I have a 1 TB HD that is very slow with loading the files in finder.
This has not been a problem with my 8 year old pc at home. Where I run macdrive to
acces the files. The HD is formatted in HFS+
When I press a folder it looks like if Finder first loads all the files in that folder and then when it's done loading it shows me the files. Is this a settings thingy or is the finder just acting like an idiot. Because it's extremely annoying and stops my workflow.
Ones it's loaded I can switch from different folders that I've previously viewed and there is no problem.
I hope someone can tell me what's going on inside the computer.
    Thanxs.

It takes forever to show up in finder. I've never had this problem before on the iMacs (white and silver), eMacs, Macbooks. And now I'm working on a tower mac with 4gb and it starts acting like a you know what...I'm sorry if I sound very annoyed but I am very annoyed. I checked Disc Utility, did a repair scan but it will take 22 hours. The academy is not open for 22 hours. Looked for the same problem but no useful info which tells me that I can do something about it or not.
