Slow/unresponsive track pad on Macbook Air

Hi,
I bought my Macbook Air just last week and it's been great until last night. We've upgraded our broadband and (it seems) since connecting it to the new WiFi network the track pad has totally slowed down, even when no programs are open. It's the same on my account, and my husband's. I've checked our memory, there's plenty of free space and I've tried changing the speed via System Preferences. It just seems to get stuck, though clicking is fine.
As it's so new I'm happy to restore the system (if anyone thinks that will help) but I got a bit lost when I tried to do it through Disk Utility. I'm not new to Apple products and I know more than my husband - but I'm no technical expert!!
Any advice will be gratefully received - I have the 2012 version, running on OSX 10.8.4 - If you need any more info I'll try to answer!!
Thanks in advance

  • Internet slow on my brand new macbook air

Hi my internet is very slow (almost unresponsive) when loading pages on my brand new macbook air.
The internet in my house is working fine.  I can still stream movies on other devices with no problems.
Any and all help would be appreciated. Thank you
    -Sarah

Have to say comparing this thread to many others that it isn't just the internet and wireless connection.  I'm just about ready to throw my new Macbook in the garbage as this has been an ongoing issue since I bought it.  And it's not the connectioon as anyone else coming in to our home is able to connect easily, Google TV runs just fine, the only device with issues is the MacBook.  The hours I waste waiting for pages to load or trying to reconnect are numerous.  Very dissappointed.
While this thread had a happy outcome, most of the others are like my situation where the problem doesn't get resolved.  If the standard PCs and windows can work fine why doesn't a Mac.  I feel duped and dumped twice as much money into a device that doesn't work as good as the less expensives laptops with Windows.
    Frustrated

  • Slow internet on mid 2011 macbook air

So my internet is intermittently slow on my macbook air. This has been happening for many months although I cannot remember if it corresponded with upgrading to OS X 10.9. It is sporadic and I cannot identify any precipitating causes or solutions. My internet speed will just randomly drop and then eventually will correct itself where I will have the 15mbps download speed that I am paying for through my ISP. When the internet speed drops I will average 0.6 - 1.5mbps on speediest.net. This seems to be only isolated to my mid 2011 macbook air as my other laptop - a PC, and my iPhone show regular speeds. I have called my ISP and router customer service departments many times with no help. I have replaced my wireless router. Please help.
Nothing has worked. I have tried everything that I can think of including:
    1. Installed all OS updates - this seemed to work for about a day and then back to the same slow internet speed
    2. restarting the computer
    3. restarting in safe mode
    4. uninstalled and reinstalled the wifi network
    5. restart modem and router
    6. replaced router with a new model
    7. changed wireless security settings on wireless router and channels'
    8. changed DNS to google 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
9 installed onyx and cleaned system
    10. ran virus check
    11. disabled safari plugins
    12. deleted preferences.plist and networkinterfaces.plist
13 turned off bluetooth on mac
    14. turned off wifi on all other devices
    15. disabling and enabling wifi networks
    16. run diagnostics on wifi - normal

run diagnostics on wifi - normal
It's not clear if that was the result of using Apple's Wireless Diagnostics. It may supply some additional helpful information.
To use it, hold an option key while you click your Mac's Wi-Fi icon, and choose Open Wireless Diagnostics...
The following authentication dialog will appear:
Authenticate with your Admin password, then click the Continue button in the following:
The network analysis and diagnostic tests will take several minutes to complete:
When it completes, if your wireless network is functioning properly the following will result:
If something is amiss, supposedly the results will be different and you will be presented with helpful information.
Assuming your connection is "working as expected" select Continue to summary and click Continue:
Ignore the pre-populated text field, which is provided as a place for you to type in additional information should Apple ask for it in the course of obtaining technical assistance from them. Apple has no way of knowing where your router is located in your home, and certainly doesn't know if you even have an upstairs bedroom closet.
    Click Continue.
The next step will also take a few minutes:
When it finishes, you will be presented with a summary that may or may not be useful to you. Let me know if it is.
The WirelessDiagnostics-xxx.tar.gz file deposited on your Desktop can be dragged to the Trash, or you may wish to expand it and examine its contents. It's up to you.

  • Time Capsule and Thunderbolt HDD very slow access via wifi enabled MacBook Air

I have a Q-RAID thunderbolt external drive attached to the Time Capsule.  I use it to archive movies for viewing via a media server around the house (mostly via WIFI).  Using my MacBook Air to access the files, performance is very spotty.  Sometimes it's very fast (monitoring the "Data Received" via Activity Monitor typically > 3MB/sec) and sometimes it's very very sluggish (Data Received < 200kb/sec).  Any idea?  It's not a home network issue b/c when it's slow, i test it immediately against a networked iMac and i can access large files just fine (Data Received > 2MB/sec).  Thanks.

I have a Q-RAID thunderbolt external drive attached to the Time Capsule.
You are killing it.. The connection on the TC is USB2. USB is slow.. slow .. slow interface. It is very CPU intensive.. and depending on what the TC is doing it can slow it down like crazy.. the fact is, the TC was designed to plug in a simple drive.. not a raid array. The access to files in the array .. frankly it is a wonder it works at all. But you should move the Q-RAID to a computer with thunderbolt port and share the disk to the network.. it will go at 10times the speed. or maybe 50times or 100times when you have slow speed. TC is not suitable.

  • Why does Yosemite slow Imac as well as MacBook Air?? Any Idea for a solution??

I have installed Yosemite on my iMac as well as on my MacBook Air.
Both now boot very very slow.
I regard this as a big disadvantage.
    Does Apple have a solution?
If if would have known of this problem in advance I wouldn't have updated on Yosemite!!

As far as I've observed the long boot times on both machines running now Yosemite is the only major problem.
However, trying to delete an additional user on the iMac (under Yosemite) lead to a frozen iMac. So the only solution was to finally switch of the iMac manually from power supply and start it again. However, then it worked.

  • Track pad on MacBook Pro 15"

The track pad on my MacBook Pro 15" (Late 2009) when trying to drag and drop files stays continously selected and never lets me drop them into the new folder.  This all started happening after install of the OS X Mountain Lion.
I have already tried the universal access route by enabling dragging but it doesn't seem the same way as it used to be.  Because even with that then when I select words while typing, it like locks and drags and messes that up, and if I do it without drag lock then it goes back to not working at all, and stays continsouly selected.
Also have tried Disk Repair Permissions.
Is there a patch out to fix this, or another way to fix this?

    Try SMC and PRAM resets:

When transfering image from my phone to iphoto.
    When Open New Application.
When working in multi application when swich between application, sometimes it was hang for a few second.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At or near the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "System Version." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Will OS X Mountain Lion slow down or crash my MacBook Air "13?

    Hi
I just downloaded OS X Mountain Lion and I am hesitant to install it... Here are some reasons why
    1. My MacBook Air will crash during the installation
    2. It will dramaticly slow down my notebook (CPU)
Thanks if you can answer my question.
P.S. I have to 2GB of memory (RAM)

It won't slow it down over Lion. Likely be faster, but you would be better off with 4GB or more RAM.

  • Synch magic track pad with macbook

I'd like to use my magic track pad with my macbook.  How do I make the macbook recognize the trackpad?

Try turning the trackpad off then back on so that the light is blinking. Then open BT preferences and initiate the search. Be sure you have the Discoverable option turned on.

  • Slow Printing after upgrade on Macbook Air but NOT no Macbook

After installing the newest firmware on my AEBS, my Macbook Air prints to my USB connected printer very slowly. If it's a page with just text, it will print with-in 10-15 seconds. However, when it has images, it will take 1-2 minutes before it starts to print. (Note that nothing else is on the network at the time.)
However, my Macbook (non-Air) has no trouble printing images and functions just like it did before the newest firmware.
I've reinstalled the driver on my Macbook Air but that didn't do anything. Hooking up the Macbook Air directly to the printer gives me speedy printing. I can't figure out what settings on my Macbook Air is making this delay happen. Any thoughts?

... I solved the problem. Deleted the partition using the utility that comes up when booting while holding down <cmd> and <R>.
    made a new partition.
then --- all in the utility that came up during booting with cmd-r ---- restored my HD up from my the TimeMachine external HD.
when all was done the MountainLion update continued as nothing had happened. Even the 2GB OS download was restored. :-)
before letting him continue I deactivated FileVault, reset passwords to less complicated ones that would work with any keyboard layout and activated automatic login. All this did the trick. Now I am happily dictating away in Pages (THIS was my true reason to update to Mountain Lion.... as well as my addiction to new apple stuff ;-)
    cheers, Martin

  • How to fix slow startup times on a macbook air

Before upgrading to Moutain Lion my MacBook Air booted up to the desktop in less than 30 seconds. Now with Mountain Lion it takes 1 minute and 30 seconds to get to the desktop. What can I do to get the startup time back to the way it was before upgrading?

I had already checked and tried numerous "google" searches without any successbefore coming here. If you can't give a response without being sarcastic then don't bother replying.
Wow! Are you thin-skinned. My comment wasn't, as you say, sarcastic. I never assume anything not explicitly stated or implied. If you've visited these forums for any length of time, you'd know how many don't do the obvious things, but expect responders to be clairvoyant. If none of those hits solved your issue, I'm out of ideas, since the global and app-specific defaults changes work here. Good luck and have a happy holiday weekend (US-only).

  • My track pad on my air doesn't always respond when using firefox and trying to scroll up or down in the page

when in firefox my track pad doesn't always respond when I want to use fingers to scroll up or down in the screen...any thoughts?

it is possible that zoom maybe enabled i think double taping with three fingers should disable it.
or you can go into settings>general> assessability> zoom and turn it off.
    hope this helps

  • Brand new MacBook + Boot Camp = Totally eratic, slow, unusable track pad!

I see the long thread below but wanted to report what's happening with the new multitouch one button trackpad on the brand new MacBooks.
It is unusable in Windows under Boot Camp.
It behaves in completely erratic ways. You can't select any text - drag over some and it won't stay selected when you unclick. There's out of control scrolling when you're inside little windows like start menu options, making it impossible to click on settings. There are weird delays with clicking generally, sporadic 2 or 3 second delays. There are control issues, sometimes the pointer just jumps around uncontrollably.
This isn't about fancy stuff like right-click or page scroll not working. This is about core required point and click type stuff that you simply can't do without a mouse or a very incredible amount of patience. It's useless.
I bought the MacBook because it can run Windows, which I need sometimes. If there is no resolution I will definitely need to return it.
I'd add I have zero issues with the trackpad under Leopard, it works perfectly.

    Hi Velasquez.j,
Thanks for the tip about the 3-finger right-click, and turning down the scroll lines. I'm running XP on the new MBP 2.53GHz. These 2 tips worked for me. Scrolling is better, though still not perfect. The right-click was driving me crazy that I couldnt do it! The 3-fingers seems to work - but not 100% - it still misses sometimes, but it's better than not working at all.
I'm not surprised the trackpad is erratic in general though. My previous machine was a late-2006 MBP and sometimes the trackpad pointer would jump all over the place, "jiggle" in place, and other wierdness like that, under XP. I am pretty happy with bootcamp in general, but I really wish Apple would make the effort to ensure that the trackpads work CORRECTLY under Windows. Right now they seem content with a bare half-baked minimum. Sorry, but it's not good enough.
For now, if you want to avoid pulling your hair out, it seems a mouse is pretty much a requirement for using Boot Camp on a portable

  • Track pad on macbook pro 2010 can click but no response

    Hi.
I have a macbook pro late 2010 model. Suddenly the mouce tracp won't work. I does everything I ask it to and even click. But when I click nothing happens. Anyone know how to fix this? I have tried screw thing behind the battery trick but that only helps if the track doesn't click at all. Help please!

Have you tried it with a mouse to see if that works? If it works with a mouse, it may be a trackpad hardware issue. You can take it to an Appple Genius bar for a FREE evaluation.

  • The internet on my Mac OSX v10.6.8 is running extremely slow. I have a macbook air 13-inch late 2010. Please help!

The Internet (firefox, safari) are loading VERY slow. At first I thought it was just my school's website acting up, but after talking to their technical support they had me delete cache and cookies, make sure all programs are updated including plug ins like adobe, flash plug in etc. All of these things didn't help when I did them.  On my school's website the videos do not load completely so they are choppy when viewed. After finishing an activity it won't load my score, during activities the page constantly has errors. It was just this website that was slow to load but now it seems like any website I go to is very slow. I am wondering if the loading problem is contributed to the computers memory, or lack of. However, I am not expert when it comes to computers so I don't know how to figure out how much free disc space I have/memory etc. I'm wondering if this is the problem.  I have increased my activity on this computer for school, including more documents, downloading etc. So do you think the slowness of the internet is contributed to the memory or disc space? I believe I have snow leopard. it is MAC OS X 10.6.8 with Memory: 2GB 1067 MHz DDR3. Please help! Thank you!

To find out how much space you have & what is left, open up Disk Utility/Machintosh HD/First Aid.  The info will be at the bottom of the window.
Sluggish Finder - Bunch of icons on your desktop?  An overcrowded desktop slows down your Mac.
Get rid of needless Finder calculations - Open a window in Finder/View/Show View Options:  ensure "Calculate All Sizes" option is unchecked.
Internet related - It's likely that your broadband connection is the bottleneck.  You can check your speed on http://www.speedtest.net to see how fast your connection is.  If your web browser specifically performs slowly, quit and relaunch it.
