Slow User Interface Performance on a Mac Pro

I've recently purchased a late 2013 6-core Mac Pro with 16gb of memory and the 256gb SSD.  While the general performance of Final Cut Pro X is outstanding (applying filters, transitions, analyzing for dominant motion, optical flow retiming, rendering, etc.), the user interface seems to still start to slow down the further along I am in my project.  It is most noticeable when I click a clip in my timeline to modify a video property in the inspector, then hit play (spacebar) again to resume editing.  At the start of a project, I can fly through my clips and edit without any hesitation, but as I near the 90 second-ish mark (with an edit/clip every 5-10 seconds), the responsiveness of the user interface starts to waiver just like my previous early 2011 Macbook Pro (something I thought was related to the graphics and/or system performance of computers from that era).
I've tried creating proxy and optimized media projects and even edited my h.264 footage in native, compressed format - regardless of what I try, the performance of the user interface is nearly identical until I start to hit a few minutes with some colour corrections on 25% of the clips.  I've also experimented with the playback quality during editing (i.e., best performance vs. quality) which resulted in minimal performance improvements.
Clearly, this Mac Pro has been designed to tear through video footage and process mass amounts of data, but I wonder if there is something else looming in the code of Final Cut Pro X that, regardless of the computer in use, the user interface just gets sluggish at a certain point when a critical mass of edits/clips are in a project.
Any comments or feedback would be greatly welcomed, as I may decide to return this beast and settle on an iMac if this symptom exists regardless of what Mac I use.
Sincerely,
Ryan Smith

1.  All of my media was located on the SSD installed inside the Mac Pro and is the startup disk of the computer
This will slow you down.  Get a secondary drive for the media and Libraries.
2.  The SSD had between 50g and 150g (depending on the project) available
That drive is becoming too full, and slowing down.
3.  The project consisted of a single event from one import, about 100 files totalling 40g
A good USB 3 or Thunderbolt external RAID will fly through that without issue.  The system drive will get bogged down.
4.  I haven't paid close enough attention to Activity Monitor; I will start doing that, but FCPX is the only application I ever have open when editing and consumes about 12gb - 16gb.
16GB RAM should be plenty for FCPX.  I've never seen it eat up that much RAM, even on very large projects.  But more RAM won't hurt if the system is using that much RAM.  How are you getting those RAM usage numbers?
The issue seems to be your drive.  First, don't use the system drive, that will bog things down, no matter what type of drive it is.  Second, get your media and Libraries on a fast secondary (external) drive.
Finally, are you running with the dual D500 or D700 GPUs?  There is a significant performance difference between the two in FCPX and Motion 5.  But I highly doubt that's your issue.  I think you simply are eating up too much of your drive, and running off the system drive, both are huge no-no's.

While 2 GB is the absolute minimum to install Mavericks, if you want to do anything with the Mac you need more then that. Upgrade your RAM.
Until you upgrade the RAM seriously consider shutting down the Mac nightly. You should also seriously review the items in the User Login Items to see if there are any there that you really don't need to have startup with your login to reduce the amount of RAM you are using.

  • After effects performance issues on mac pro 12-core

    Hello everyone,
I feel as if i keep making similar posts to this, but for some reason i am still not satisfied with my machine. Im using a mac pro 12-core 2.4GHz with 40gigs of ram installed and a ATI Radeon 5770 graphics card.
I finally got around to getting my SSD set up and i have all of my applications installed on it along with the OS. i also have all of my cache files set to my WD hard drive so I'm not clogging up my 120GB SSD. My SSD has 40gigs left so i figure i shouldn't go any lower than that to keep the performance of the drive at its fullest potential.
I do a lot of work in after effects CS6 and i feel that the machine is still going slow.. I was working on a project last night and when i went to do a RAM preview i kept getting the beach ball and after effects would glitch up.. what would be the main cause of this? could it have been that the destination file i was working with was on my WD drive and not the SSD?
I don't know what it is i need to keep adding to this machine to finally be satisfied with its performance.. My next investment would most likely be a GTX 570 to enable CUDA cores for open GL rendering, but i still feel that i should still be getting great performance now.
Any suggestions? maybe I'm doing something wrong?
    Thanks in advance!

Rick is talking about After Effects Multiprocessing.  You can turn it off and on here:
Also, you've only reserved 3 GB out of 40 GB for other applications.  Other apps on your computer also need memory to work and setting this number so low could cause these apps to fight with After Effects over the available memory causing AE to slow down. I would suggest starting with that number a lot higher, possibly around 10 GB.  Then do a bunch of render tests to see what the best settings are for your machine.
I also highly recommend watching the "Using 'Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously' Multiprocessing" tutorial by Adobe employee Todd Kopriva on Video2Brain for more information.  If you really want to learn more about getting the best performance in AE, I would go through the rest of the After Effects & Premiere Pro Performance Workshop.  You'll learn a lot.

  • PPro Performance Variance on Mac Pro 2013: CC Version 7.0 vs. Version 8.0

    Hi,
I've been editing on a late 2013 Mac Pro model with Yosemite (see system specs in the JPEG below). I have really mixed results editing with the most up to date version of Premiere Pro CC. Playback in a timeline lags significantly with 4K and standard HD 1080p media and the software crashes more often than I would like. I have tried a few things like checking the permissions status of varying media and project folders. I do not use GPU-based rendering as that has been problematic, creating pink lines etc. in the resulting previews and exports. Even after previews are rendered for a timeline, playback still lags regardless of media resolution.
In general, as a Premiere project becomes more complex, crashes become more frequent and playback lags even more. Dynamic Linking with AE causes so many crashes that is basically not functional. The only plug-ins I'm using are Magic Bullet and FilmConvert.
I'm not a huge fan of the shift in workflow/edit logic in FCP X, and want to avoid making that transition if I can. In an attempt to test the varied performance of Premiere, I have reverted to a previous version, CC 7.0. MY initial testing shows that this version renders previews more quickly (still without GPU assistance) and playback seems to lag less. Of course I imported an XML from a project originating in V. 8.0 and there are a few translation issues mostly related to warp stabilizing and color correction, which can be fixed if the overall performance boost is greater.
I have read a handful of forums of users experiencing similar or even more drastic difficulty running Premiere on a new MacPro platform. I have explored some of the troubleshoots suggested, but no major changes in performance. It seems to be hit or miss in terms of Premiere/MacPros playing well together. Strange that no one factor can seem to be pinpointed.
Has anyone else been fiddling with this option of using a previous version of Premiere on a Mac Pro? Any success? Other suggestions to improve performance in the latest version?
    Thanks!

I just had an interesting thought.
I use the method of dragging a clip to the "new item" button to create a matching sequence of my majority media type for a project. Have there been any bugs or issues reported with this technique on the latest version of Premiere Pro CC? This is a possibility I haven't yet explored in terms of the issues I am experiencing with playback. When this thought dawned on me today, I took a look at my sequence settings in a troublesome clip, and am not sure it quite matches up. In this example, details in screenshot below, my majority footage was shot on a Canon XA20. The resulting sequence is using at ARRI Cinema editing mode. That seems to be a mis-match, but maybe not? Thoughts? Suggestions? Helpful resources about "editing modes" and optimization for playback? Any help appreciated. Thanks!

  • Horrible performance on new Mac pro

I have a new 2014 Mac pro with an 8-core processor and 64 gb RAM and with it logic is unable to handle more than 9-10 software instrument channels operating with midi data and minimal processing. I've tried switching out external audio interfaces and messing with every audio setting, but no matter what I do logic is laggy and keeps giving me the message "unable to synchronize midi time clock...check conflict with external device" over and over again. I've done quite a bit of research and it feels like i've tried EVERYTHING that could potentially fix the problem. All software is up to date. it has an SD hard drive with an added 7200rpm 4tb LaCie thunderbolt external drive that contains all my samples/audio. Please help!

Thanks, Nigel, for the quick response!
Ive tried switching between my newer antelope zodiac+ and my old focusrite 2i2, both of which are up to date on their drivers, but in both cases I've experienced similar problems.
I did just try reconfiguring things as you advised through the terminal. It doesn't seem to have helped much.
According to the etresoft report, when a project with 9 software instrument tracks (4 Battery and 5 Sylenth in three track stacks) and a somewhat significant amount of processing (two reverb busses, 3 mastering plugins on the master, 3-10 effects plugins per track) is playing with a blank audio track selected, Logic is using 131% of my computers faculties, and I was surprised to see that 32lives is actually using an additional 42 (I guess I need to find an alternative 64 bit plugin for sylenth).
Any other Ideas? Could 32lives and sylenth be my only issue?

  • Can you have multiple users working off the same Mac pro at the same time with multiple monitors but doing different things?

I'm buying desktops for a start up company and was wondering if I could purchase a single Mac Pro and run multiple monitors to allow multiple users to work on the computer at the same time. These users would be doing different tasks but I would hope to accomplish that on a single desktop. I know that screen sharing is possible but with only one user controlling both of the screens. Thanks in advance, sorry for my apple ignorance!

A lot of companies are buying or leasing laptops to be used at the office by day, and carried home at night.
Some companies are doing "Bring your own device". Bring a device to receive email -- computer/smartphone/tablet you already have, or have an allowance to buy one for your use.
If Capital is short (and when is it not) leasing computers, to be turned in a few years, can be a huge savings because the cost is expensed as incurred. The alternative is laying out cash today, but not being able to expense the cost this year. Instead, the computer expense must be recovered over their useful life (often five years) through depreciation.

  • How do I fix incorrect resolution for Firefox user interface on Retina display Mac?

I have a 15" retina display Mac (roughly a year old) running Mountain Lion. A couple weeks ago the user interface in Firefox seems have switched from using the normal zoom level of every other application to the native dpi of the retina display monitor. This means that the UI elements are all extremely tiny, etc. Is there anyway to reset this without simply reinstalling or reseting the rest of my configuration?
    Currently running Firefox 27.0.

You can try to modify the gfx.hidpi.enabled pref on the <b>about:config</b> page (<=0: disable; 1:all screens same res; >1:enable always).
Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox (you need to close and restart Firefox).

  • Forgot user password, how to reset mac pro to factory settings

    hi guys,
Recently I bought a used mac OS X 10.5, am very new to mac world. i am unable to load any softwares like wireless adapters since I am unable to get the password for the previous user. Also, I would like to reset the computer to factory settings, can I do that? Would you folks help me out!!
    thanks

The Mac Pro has 4 internal drive sleds, no cables, that just pull out and slide back in.
Pull out the original drive and see what else is there.
Buy yourself or use one of your own drives.
HOLD 'C' to boot from a DVD.
Holding OPTION or Alt will show a boot menu of valid boot volumes (can include Windows even). You could boot from Windows CD/DVD and nuke the whole thing.
Before installing, go to UTILITY menu and DISK UTILITY and ERASE the drive (not the subset volume).
Assume you know your way around Mac and OS, yes?
You don't know what was or wasn't, and if you don't own license for software etc that is on the computer, another reason to wipe it clean.
    Start from scratch.
Call AppleCare Customer Support and they can send out discs for fee, insure it is 'legit' (need to give them the serial number from case).

Of course any 4-core Mac Pro with 8 GB RAM and appropriate graphics card will run any version of Photoshop very well, but you miss the point.

    multiple Mac Pro computer investment
    choices
    and prices to choose among:
boxes from 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 with various graphics cards and other architectural parameters to consider when choosing the "best" one for any given workflow and financial situation.
With 11 Mac Pros (further complicated by confusing graphics cards combinations) it behooves us to quickly remove what may be
unacceptable investment choices from consideration. The one box of 11 that limits RAM to 8 GB is - IMO - easily identified as "unacceptable" and removed from consideration.
Moving forward :) as app vendors evolve apps to better utilize available cheap RAM, OS 10.6 and boxes with more RAM access (like all the other Mac Pros ever made) ever-larger amounts of
cheap RAM will become more useful. E.g. I paid US$450 to upgrade my 2007 Macbook Pro from 2 GB to 3 GB, and it was worth it. Today that much money will put 24 GB in a MP, and RAM prices continue to fall.
Under OS X Photoshop can already take advantage of at least 32 GB installed RAM. We do not know what 64-bit Mac PS will bring us in a year or so, but odds are pretty high that having lots of RAM available will be very desirable. IMO buying a 4-year-lifecycle pro tower in 2009 that is constrained to 8 GB RAM would be a poor purchase decision.
All the above comments assume heavy graphics app usage like CS3/4/5.

    P.S.
We agree about the new Mini. Even with its limited RAM (and consequent shortened life cycle) the low price makes it a viable choice for less than the heaviest graphics work.
The new Mini IMO is the sleeper of the new Macs. iMacs are hamstrung by their glossy displays intolerable to many (not all) graphics pros but the Minis are not. Running OS 10.6 with FW 800 connectivity, 9400M graphics, 4 GB DDR3 RAM and third-party displays a Mini can now actually drive a desktop Aperture or Photoshop workflow (although obviously not like a 4x-the-price MP would drive such apps) at a very cheap price.

  • Interfacing Video Camera to Mac Pro for Final Cut Express HD Use

I have a lot of Video8 tapes that were made on my Sony DCR-TRV310 that I want to move to my Mac Pro and edit with Final Cut Express HD. The Sony camera only has the three (R,Y,W) output ports and my Mac Pro only has firewire input ports. Does anyone know of a cord solution or do I have to use an additional interface. Thanks

    Hello,
Unfortunately there is no "cable solution" You will need an external interface. Something along the lines of an external tv tuner. Elgato Systems makes a few, i've had great success with the Hauppage WinTV PVR USB2 Tuner. This cost me about 150$ Canadian and is compatible with Mac's after a software download from the manufacturer's website.

  • FCPX Performance Issues on Mac Pro

I've been having some trouble running FCPX on my Mac Pro.
    Specs:
    MacPro1,1
    Quad-Core 2.66Ghz
    10 Gb Memory
ATI Radeon HD 5770 & Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT
120 Gb 6Gb/s SSD for Lion & FCPX w/ a few other HDD's for media storage
I know I have an older Mac Pro but still I'd think that with an SSD, a new graphics card, and a quad core FCPX would be able to run sufficiently. The whole program just runs slow in general. Anyone have some tips on how to make it run faster? I really don't want to take FCPX out of my work-flow but if I have to I'll just have to resort to Adobe Premiere.

I'd look at what HDDs you use. I might also remove the 7300 card. I don't know what interaction it may be having but I'd look to simplify the hardware to see what might be going on. I have a MP 1.1 with the 5770 card and FCPX works just fine (although now that I have used it a bit I know I don't really like it).  I don't know what the SSD does since I don't have that but if you're internal drives are fast 7200 rpm drives then I'd check the vid card interaction.

  • User Upgradability on the new Mac Pro?

I understand that one can configure the new Mac Pro from around $3,000 to almost $10,000. But can one buy the base unit and then upgrade parts later on? For example, RAM upgrade, CPU upgrade, graphic card upgrade, etc.
Is the Mac Pro as quiet as a Mac Mini?

The tear-down images and data on the Xeon E5-xxxxV2 series processors look like the cpu can be upgraded by the user.  All E5 processors use the FCLGA - 2011 socket, same pin-out so should be replaceable:
    1620V2 - 4 core - 3.7 GHZ - $294
    1650V2 - 6 core - 3.5 GHz - $583
    1680V2 - 8 core - 3.0 GHz - $1723
    2697V2 - 12 core - 2.7 GHz - $2618
Interesting tidbit - the max addressable memory for the 4, 6, 8 core models is 256 GB, while that of the 12 core is 768 GB.

  • Safari graphical user interface poor quality on Macbook Pro Retina

I’ve noticed that the Safari graphical user interface quality is not good on my Macbook Pro Retina display. Although it has been optimized for Retina displays I keep seeing strange artifacts or glitches from time to time, while this one is persistent, check out the dark stripe behind the bookmarks toolbar : https://www.dropbox.com/s/pa7zizpbi7vdx41/Screen%20Shot%202013-04-21%20at%2012.5 6.11%20PM.png (if the link doesn’t open on click just do the right click - open in new tab) There are also same “spots” on toolbar buttons (bookmark folders) as well, but they are a bit harder to discern.
I don’t think it is a graphic card or display issue since almost all of retina-ready apps work just fine (I have replaced my LG with a Samsung screen, btw).
I wonder does anybody have the same experience with Safari? And if so, has anyone managed to solve the issue?

Try creating a brand new account (in System Preferences -> Users & Groups) and test there.
    Tried. The same.
I don't actually have a retina machine, but I see no reason for this to be related to the fact that you have a retina MBP. Unless you have information that suggests it is present on other similar machines...?
At first I thought that it was just on the Retina, but then I really looked into my external monitor and saw it — looking at it right now. It seems to me that when Always show tab bar is ON the space between Bookmarks bar and the tab is sloppy sliced.
The hDPI screen reveals the graphic irregularities from regular DPI screens without a problem.
The reason I posted this here is because I saw many people are having glitches, artifacts and flickers with Safari (on Retina).

  • Aperture and PS performance difference on Mac Pro - new Macbook Pro 2.53

I am considering selling and replacing two computers with one new MBP 2.53 ghz 15 inch with 4gb RAM. The new MBP would be replacing a nearly three-year-old Mac Pro dual 2.66 with with 9gb RAM, a Nvidia 8800 GT graphics card (512 vram); and a Macbook Pro 2.3 ghz of about the same age. The replacement is due to space issues mainly (we are renovating the house and accommodating our new baby!) but also because I tend to dispose of my macs at about three years to before the resale value drops too much. My main concern is about what performance reduction (or even enhancement?) I will see compared to the Mac Pro tower in general and, more specifically, performance when it comes to running Aperture, CS4 and Lightroom. It would be good to here from anybody (especially photographers) who has made a similar switch. Also I have read that the new MBP is supposed to take 6gb Ram (through "not supported by Apple") any info on this would be good, too.
Note that I have cross posted this to the Aperture forum.
    Cheers
    D

I cannot from personal experience describe what the performance change will be but my expectation is that properly set up with E/C34-eSATA external hard drives performance would probably equal or exceed the G5. The real unknown is the effect of 4 GB RAM instead of 9 GB RAM - - especially when we are on OS 10.6 Snow Leopard a few months from now.
What I can comment on is buy the 17" MBP rather than the 15" MBP. My reasons:
    • More screen real estate, a very big deal when in the field and no external display is connected.
    • Much higher pixel count, a very big deal when in the field and no external display is connected.
    • Available matte display, a very big deal (to many pro photogs, including me) when in the field and no external display is connected. Note however that none of us have actually seen the new 17" MBP because it has not shipped yet.
    • Faster; the added size and easier heat dissipation of the 17" apparently allow Apple to make less engineering compromises.
    • Twice the available RAM, a very big deal moving forward as app vendors evolve apps to better utilize available cheap RAM, OS 10.6 and boxes with more RAM access. Under OS X Photoshop (and probably Aperture as well) can already take advantage of up to 32 GB installed RAM, maybe more.
    • Longer battery life is alleged, which matters not to me but some folks care.
    • After years of using 15" and smaller, starting with the Duo, I now use a 2.33 GHz 17" and far prefer the larger size.
    • All the above benefits and it only weighs 1.1 pound more than the 15" MBP.
IMO graphics performance of the new 17" MBP with 8 GB RAM will easily exceed your G5. Unfortunately the cost of maximizing RAM in the new MBP is still exorbitant, but that price will fall.
    -Allen Wicks
P.S. Adding RAM adds heat, which may be why Apple does not support more than 4 GB RAM in the 15" size.
P.P.S. If you move to a laptop-only workflow use Referenced Masters, keep the Library on the internal drive and make sure the internal drive stays underfilled for speed of all apps.
