Slow wifi only on iMac

First of all, I have no idea where to post this question, so any redirect ideas are appreciated.
Time Warner Internet, with LinkSys router.  On iPad,15.5 Mbps, but on granny iMac (circa 2007, running Lion) get between .52 and .78 Mbps.  Can't work from home, time-outs causing problems.
This is probably a File Vault issue, but I'm not sure -- when I upgraded to Lion, ended up with Legacy File Vault which I cannot turn off or uninstall b/c not enough HD space.  500GB HD, 136GB available; File Vault wants 243.7GB free, which is probably impossible to do.
How likely is it that File Vault is causing the problems?  Do I have any options here, other than replacing the iMac?
Thanks.

Most often BitTorrent, iCloud, Dropbox, or some other cloud-data application is involved in cases of mysterious bandwidth use by a Mac. If you use iCloud, uncheck at least Photo Stream and Documents & Data in its preference pane and see whether there's any change. If you use third-party network backup or file-sync software, disable that. If you use a torrent client, remove it.
Otherwise, if you're running OS X 10.9 or later, you can see which processes are most active on the network.
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select All Processes from the View menu, if not already selected, and also select the Network tab.
Click the heading of the Sent Bytes column in the process table to sort the entries by bandwidth usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Repeat with the Rcvd Bytes column.

  • IPod Touch 2G Slow WiFi only on Time Capsule

I have the Time Capsule WiFi station and when my iPod is connected (I have DSL), I only get about 150kb/sec download when I should be over 1.5Mb/sec. My iMac has the proper download speeds when it's connected wirelessly. At work (T1 line), my iPod Touch will get 2.5Mb/sec.
The problem seems to be connecting to my home WiFi only. And it only occurs with my iPod Touch. I'm confused.

Hi I just solved my similar issue today with my touch.
Mi wireless settings were set to mixed, setting it to G only solved it.

  • Extremely slow wifi on an iMac

    Hello,
All of a sudden my wifi connection between my 'old' iMac (Intel 3 GHz) and the modem/router is extremely slow. Other machines in the same area don't have this problem so I'm tempted to rule out a problem with the router. What didn't work to get rid of this problem:
switching Airport OFF then back ON several times
    restarting the iMac
    restarting the modem/router
I checked the channels, I'm the only one on channel 3 in the neighborhood. There's no encryption.
Anything else I could do ? Thanks in advance !

  • Slow wifi speeds with imac 3.06ghz

    Hello,
So I just got my new imac 3.06ghz with 2gb of ram and I have noticed the internet speed when using wifi is extremely slow. Currently I am using a linksys wrt54G router with time warner cable. If I have my old 1st gen macbook side by side with my imac the macbook shows full signal strength on the airport and the imac shows only a few bars. If I run a speed test with them both the macbook downloads at around 1.5mb and the imac gets a blazing 51k.
Weird symptom on the imac is the blue status bar starts to load in safari, it gets about 3/4 through and then freezes and sits at 3/4 done for a few minutes. During this time images and text on the site slowly start to show up, just like if you were back on a dialup connection.
    Troubleshooting that I have done:
    reset smc and pram
    erase and install
    downloaded all available software updates
changed the channel that the router is broadcasting on
    - router security is using wep and mixed b&g
    - other devices that work fast with a wireless connection on the router are an iphone, xbox 360 and nintendo ds
    * even tried testing with win xp and bootcamp but I haven't figured out how to get windows to recognize the wireless card yet
So i'm at the point where I'm assuming this is a hardware issue, maybe the airport antenna?
    Any other suggestions?

Everyone on here that is experiencing these wifi issues with their new iMacs NEEDS to call Apple and get this elevated. I'm out of the country right now but I'm in the middle of troubleshooting this issue with Apple. I've spoken with several techs and most don't read this forum and are unaware of any widespread wifi issue with the iMacs. When I return home I will be continuing my troubleshooting with Apple on this issue. My symptoms are very similar to the ones posted in several recent threads on this issue. So far it is pointing to a software problem but I can't rule out the hardware yet. However using BootCamp I can launch Windows Vista on the same machine and surf the internet at high speed through the same Time Capsule. Also all other PC's on my home network are connecting to the Time Capsule at high speed with no hiccups. I didn't notice the problem until all the updates were loaded onto my new iMac which I received July 18th.

  • Samsung Galaxy S5 Hotspot is Slow (Wifi Only)

I obtained my Galaxy S5 about a month after it came out. Since I have owned it the Wifi hotspot feature has been extremely slow (< a few kb/s).
If I tether the phone, the speed is excellent, and the internet speed on the phone is perfectly fine. This problem only happens when using the Wifi hotspot functionality. Another interesting fact is that if I use the hot-spot at the slow speed for more than 30-45 minutes, the wifi hotspot starts working at full speed after that time. This occurs without changing anything on the phone or my computer. To validate this isn't any issue with my computer, I have tried this with multiple devices and experience the same slowness issues.
My hope was this was firmware or software issues, but I have gone through a couple rounds of updates on the phone and haven't seen anything change. There was another post asking me to power down and remove and reinsert the SIM after 30 sec. I did this, but it didn't have any impact.
Please let me know what suggestions you might have to fix this problem.
    Thanks!

While I can't tell you why it's not working for you, I can assure you it should be able to provide decent speed as a WiFi hotspot.  I generally get mid-20mbps in XLTE areas via WiFi which is about as good as my cheap laptop gets thru its wireless adapter when connected to any wireless network.  I've hit over 80mbps tethered.
If I were you, I'd look at possible interference sources in your area.  Are there a lot of WiFi hotspots in range?  Old 2.4Ghz wireless phones are also a source of trouble.  Could be a neighbor's gabbing on their old phone a lot and you get a speed bump when they hang up.

  • Slow WiFi only on home network and only on Mac

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro and internet downloads and especially viewing any videos (like youtube) are painfully slow at home. Videos basically load for a few minutes, play about 5 seconds of video, then load for a few more minutes. I know it is not the actual computer, b/c if I connect to another network elsewhere everything runs fine and fast. Also, it can't totally be my network since we have a few PC's on the same home network that are significantly faster with downloads. Things that take 20 seconds on my PC's take up to 10 minutes or more on the MacBook. Are there settings somewhere that I have wrong? Thanks, -Amy

So the RSSI and Transmit look okay (the speed 54 indicates a wireless G router). So your new Mac Book can run on wireless N protocal which is faster, so a thought for the future is an upgrade to a new router (which might solve all your problems). When I experienced much of what you are seeing, eventually I traced this to the WiFi router and got a new Airport express with N capability. I could have tried patching the router (mine was Netgear) but the added speed of the N standard pushed me onto a new router. My work PC's seemed to work okay on my old system and work great on the new Apple router.
But if you can see the other networks and find channel 6 or 11 completely open I would recommend changing the Linksys router to one of those channels and seeing if anything improves. These channels have no overlap in frequency with each other, but are also the most popular. If these are taken it still would be worth a try. Other interferences such as cordless phones and microwave ovens and the like will also affect G protocol wireless so moving the channel helps skip around them as well.
Before you make a change I suggest going to www.speedtest.net to verify your current performance. Maybe do this once in awhile for a day or so to get a measure of your current best and worst performance. This is a java applet that sends some packets to a local server and reads some down. It gives you a speedometer interface that gives you a Ping value (time for one packet to go between computers, should be in the 10 to 30 millisecond range) and then an upload speed and download speed. The web site actually keeps track of your speed values by date and time so you can review them as you make changes.
I would pick the recommended server. They select one near by but not at Comcast. So this test looks at your service between Comcast and the world. Comcast actually has a localized version of this same program www.speedtest.comcast.net, and so it can test your speeds within your own network - basically to Comcast and back. So this tests your line to Comcast.
Do this testing with your laptop connected by wire to your router (so this tests your speed without the WiFi) and then connecting to the internet via the WiFi. Without the WiFi and directly to Comcast's version of speed test, you should get the speed you are paying for from Comcast. The wired test to the speedtest.net suggested server gives you a more real world speed.
Once you have these base lines then change wifi channels and see if that helps.

  • New imac 27(Intel based, bought 2013) slow wifi connection with my Verizon fios actiontec router. All other wireless devices in the house(ipad 3gen,MacBook Air ,hp laptop) have a much faster connection. Should I change router settings to G only, etc

New imac 27(Intel based, bought 2013) slow wifi connection with my Verizon fios actiontec router. All other wireless devices in the house(ipad 3gen,MacBook Air ,hp laptop) have a much faster connection. Should I change router settings to G only, switch channel from auto to maybe 6,channel width to 20mhz? Already changed security settings to WPA2.  Currently router is running in mixed b and g mode.

If you have one computer running on G they will all run on G. All ROUTERS are backward compatible, in otherwords if you have a group of computers and all of them are N compatible and one or two are G They will all work but the N computers will run at N and those that are G will run at G speed not N.
It can get confusing but really it is simple. The newest is 802.11 AC and ic used with the newest Mac Computers made available in November 2013. So if you have the newest Airport Extreme that is 802.11ac and the newest computers that are AC compliant your speed will be 5 times faster than anything on the market right now.

  • Slow wifi - windows 7 on imac

    Hi!
Im having slow wifi when I use windows 7 (bootcamp) on my new imac 27 late 2012.
When I use OS X I get 23-24mbits down and 4,9mbit/s up on my 25/5mbis/s connection. When using Windows 7 I get only 2mbit/s down but upload is fine. My macbook pro, stationary pc and all other devices using the same wifi connection is also fine. Wireless signal comes from AirPort Extreme base station (updated software). I noticed the problem when playing games in windows and got lagging both ingame and over mumble voice. Same problem when I connect cable directly from base station to my imac.
I have reinstalled drivers using both broadcom and windows drivers. Tried changing wireless channels on Airport base station, no change. There is no other detectable wireless networks nearby, thinking it could interfer with the signal. And as I said it works fine when I boot into OS X.
    Please help =)

think you will find you will get much much more responses in the bootcamp forum

  • Why is my internet speed slower on my 4g iPod touch compared to my 1g iPad (Wifi only), though we use the same router?

i bought my 4g iPod touch just 3 months ago fromt the US. Internet speed was just fine and working consistently while i was using a d-link router.
my Wi-Fi network is password protected and since has not affected the speeds on my pc or my iPad (wifi only). However, just 4 weeks ago, i bought a new router, an Aztec one. That has not improved or worsened the speeds on my pc or iPad, but worsens only my iPod touch, even though it says its connected and has a full signal strength.
    Here are the symptoms:-
    1. iMessage is now really slow as after i click send, the loading bar at the top lags.
    2. i can't go on to google or any site or app that involves internet connection e.g. Facebook, Twitter
    3. I can't purchase or get apps from the App store as the searching takes way too long.
    4. Now as i pull down the notifications bar, it shows temperature but no stock; i can't even access the Stocks app
    5. I can see the temperature for the day on the notifications, but i cant see the details for the rest of the week like i was able to
    6. I now cant read any updated emails on Mail as it takes way too long
I live in a country called Brunei, and speeds are the worst there, yet they shouldn't be this slow especialy when my friends and other devices are working.
So, what's wrong? Is it my new router?

Have you tried a simple reset of your iPod to see if that helps?  To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
Otherwise, have you tried any of the troubleshooting mentioned in this Apple support document?

My iPad2 (wifi only) is significantly slower since upgrading to iOS 8.0.2. Is Apple addressing this?  Any way to go back to iOS 7?

I run an iPad 2 on iOS 8.0.2 and have no significant speed issues (FWIW).
Try resetting the iPad by holding the home and power keys down until the Apple logo appears.
Any way to go back to iOS 7?
No. Apple does not support iOS downgrades.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • Slow in-app downloads WiFi only

Since updating to iOS 6.1.3, I have noted significant worsening in in-app download speeds over WiFi. (iPad 4G and iPhone 5)
I use a number of apps that download large files. One is a medical text that updates 1-1.2 GB of data monthly. This used to take 30-40 minutes, now takes 8+ hours. Audible audiobooks (200-250MB) take 3-4 hours, MOG downloads take forever while music streams work fine. App updates seem to be ok and web browsing speeds also are not impaired. Speedtest reports more thatn adequate speeds on all the different WiFi networks I have tried.
This does seem to be limited to WiFi. Audible allows the first 50MB of a book to be downloaded over cellular data. Swapping from Wifi to 4g mid-download brings the rest of the audiobook down in seconds!
    Any one else noticing this?

I've been having exactly the same problem for a long time since iOS 6 on my iphone 4 and iphone 5.
I've tried to download files in several apps like Download Lite, GoodReader, Dropbox, Bookman, with which I used to do a lot of in-app download tasks. When using LTE on my iphone 5, the speed looks reasonable(500KB/s~1.5MB/s), but when I turn on the WiFi, the speed instantly drop to around 30KB/s.
The "official apps" like App Store, iTunes, iBook, however, seems not to be affected.
I am using WPA2 with AES for my WiFi connection, and turning to WPA/TKIP made no change.
Also tried to reset the network setting and neither does that have any effect.
Guess Apple is not going to fix it on iOS 6, should I expect a fix in the next release of iOS?
**EDIT**: I also have a iPad 2 (32GB WiFi only version) and the problem doesn't happen on it.
**EDIT2**: The problem also happen on another WiFi connection using WPA2 Enterprise.

  • IPad wifi only vs iPad 3G, same wifi chip or not?

Does anyone know if the wifi chip in the wifi only ipad and ipad 3g are the same? Sometimes all the radios are on one chip which might indicate a totally different chipset for the two ipads. I am having trouble with slow internet speeds on my wifi only ipad. My iPhone 4 and Core i5 iMac are on the same network and are just fine. I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting from network, forgetting network and rebuilding, ipad hard reset, airport reset....nothing seems to help. I thought maybe I could swap my wifi only model for a 3g if the wifi chip was different.

    HI,
I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting from network, forgetting network and rebuilding, ipad hard reset, airport reset....nothing seems to help
Try ... Tap Settings / General / Reset / Reset Network Settings
I thought maybe I could swap my wifi only model for a 3g if the wifi chip was different.
If Resetting Network Settings doesn't make a difference, take your iPad in for service.

  • Slow network rate for imac

I have recently moved to a wireless N network & it seemed fine but now using it the imac I use is really slow. it is this :-
Imac 3.06 Intel, 4Gb RAM on mac os x 10.5.7
I have a new macbook 2.4 Intel, 4Gb RAM on mac os x 10.5.7 on the same network sat right next to the imac & the transmit rate is around 120 for the macbook but only maxing out @ 65 if I am lucky for the imac!
Does anyone know how to solve this, what could be the problem or where to look for help?

Sorry -- but there are 100's of posts about this and similar subjects.. seems IMacs with 10.5.7 are just having all sorts of problems with Wifi.. if you should come across anything that helps let us know!.

  • Slow wifi network with iPhone

I have a latest model 16GB iPhone and am seeing extremely slow internet speeds over my home wifi network. Some of my friends are having the same problem.
I have a fairly modern ethernet-only ADSL2+ belkin router, which is connected to my time capsule. I'm using my time capsule to provide wireless internet access. There are two macs on the network with 802.11n cards, and a third mac with 802.11g, as well as my iPhone. I also have an airport express (i'm fairly sure it also has 802.11n) which is used exclusively for printing.
When I run a broadband speed test, I get 4 to 5Mbit on the mac with 802.11g. But on my iPhone I'm only seeing speeds of around 0.5Mbit!
Does anyone have any ideas what is going on?

The Wifi network gets disconected frequently even when I use home wifi while my iMac is connecting to home wifi with no issue. My Iphone5 has never been jailbroken. Is it I have to wait for another iOs update to get this issue fixed?
