Slow Windows 7 shutdown in specific network

Hello.
I know there have been many questions and topics regarding slow Windows 7 boot or shutdown, but I have a feeling my problem is different.
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with all updates, 3rd party firewall, temporarily no AV software.  The system was set up three years ago and has been working flawlessly ever since. Except for one thing: when I order it to shut down, it likes to
stop at the Windows screen for up to three minutes. I can't tell when exactly did this start happening but it's been harassing me for at least six months.
I've tried the most common ways to speed this up a little bit; I've done the pagefile trick in the registry but with no result. I've traced the shutdown process using xbootmgr which gave me a nice xml output log, but it said that all of the processes together
take approx. 16 seconds to shut down, not 3 minutes!
I was hopeless. And then, some time ago, I went to my brother's place and took my PC with me. I plugged it into his home network and guess what? Yes, the shutdown speed came back to normal. During my one-week stay at my brother's it never took my PC more
than 20 seconds to shut down.
But the problem was not yet resolved for good. Although Windows slowed down significantly after I came back home, I learned that it's not my hardware's fault and maybe I can fix this without reinstalling the OS.
I started digging.
I flushed DNS and ARP cache, cleared TCP/IP settings (netsh int ip reset), switch to other DNS servers, turned off file sharing over network, I even changed the address pool on my router (from 192.168.1.x to 192.168.2.x), but all in vain. The PC just won't
speed up.
And here's a small network scheme:
My PC -> Gigabit switch -> Router -> ISP Modem -> Internet
It looks pretty much the same at my brother's.
Any ideas?

I have installed the latest driver for my network interface (in beta phase since 2009, but hey...), scanned my system and updated my firewall to the latest version. I even unplugged the freaking patchcord, but none of these steps helped.
Gonna try to disconnect router from Internet later when it's not in use.
UPDATE: Disconnecting router from the Internet did not help. I'm going to try and plug my PC to the modem directly later and see what happens.
UPDATE: It seems I'm on the right track. After connecting PC directly to the ISP modem the shutdown speed remained unaffected, but just for the first time. Every other shutdown and reboot have been executed three times faster! I think there might be a problem
with default gateway's MAC address, since that's one of the things that changes when switching networks. I'm going to change my router's MAC add. as soon as I get a green light from my ISP.
UPDATE: This is weird. After plugging the PC directly to my ISP modem Windows doesn't ask me whether it's a private or public network; it thinks it's my brother's network. How is this possible? We use different ISPs in different parts of the country.
FIXED. I removed a bunch of programs I haven't used for a while to free some space on C: Ventrilo and Teamspeak clients, CCleaner, Echolink, WOL Magic Packet Sender, Cobian Backup and a few others I can't remember. The problem went away.
I'm not sure which one of these applications was causing the problem but I think it might has been this old version of Cobian Backup.
PC turns itself off within 14 seconds now.

  • Slow Windows-based network devices (smb) discovery?

    Hi
I've noticed a problem with accessing windows file shares.
After a successfull boot of my mac it takes around 5-10 min for macOS to detect my windows computer on network.
This is very long time and i cannot access the shares without waiting.
I've read a lot about issues with samba and apple's samba's custom implementation however i've found no working solution for my case.
Has anyone experience similiar issues with slow windows devices network discovery?

I am experiencing the same issue... I was searching the whole afternoon but until now unable to find a solution...

I have this same error on other yellow exclamation marks respective of what kind of device it is.
=> To test my sanity, I put the old hard drive (same size) back in and except for the impact of slowness due to error retries, everything works okay.
    Note:
Same issue (hardware not detected) for Video adapter and Audio.
I bought new USB Wireless adapter to test, and the driver installed but not activated because "not digitally signed", and that same issue fits all the above hardware.  I down loaded them from Toshiba, and they are confirmed installed, but not accepted with digitally signed.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled with same results.
    Solved!

I'm discovering I am not as well as I thought... running on the  AF hard drive which was built with a copy drive from old format drive which was the product of system recovery disc set.
Review for context: Advanced Function HDD
Scenario that exposes harm caused by cloning data from 4K blocks drive to 512 bytes blocked drive (AF)
Toshiba supplied Windows-7 System Restore Discs: to factory state
Then I built the Windows-7 Repair  Disc... used later.
Hard drive was replaced when it caused SMART warning at every system boot.
Acronis was only utility that quickly detected problem (3 sectors had permanent read errors.) Active@Disk Image and Power Quest Drive Image (Ghost) did not detect the issue.
I tried Seagate 500 GB and Western digital 500 GB HDD drives as copy target.
That new drive would not boot: "Required source not found"
Booted My newly created Windows-7 repair disc, and used to to fix startup.
    See images.
That worked and then the ST9500423AS disc booted.
Now... next day I discovered Window Update is not working.
    I get message:
Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You need to restart your computer.
I ran Microsoft Fixit for updates.  It says it fixed two items.
    I still have the problem.
    The service shows "started"
Control Panel/ ACTION Center/ Maintenance/ Check for Updates
     "No action needed"
"Windows Update does not require any action"
    I checked  Update History...
... It is empty, else window is vacant... blank.
Soooo..... for a sanity check, I swap out hard drive; go back to the old format (which is the one I copied).
It works!  7 updates to install, including SP1... but I did NOT install them.
Switch back to the AF drive... Update doesn't work. I am broke again.
Is this another strange problem caused by the Advance Format issue?
    What to do?
By the way... I did install an Intel storage Matrix driver  update, but I do not have RAID chip, so that driver is not for me... unless I missed out on something.

    Hi,
    Thank you for the post.
I fully understand the inconvenience the issue has been caused and the current situation can be frustrating. Please try the following steps for troubleshooting.
    1.    Please start the computer in Safe Mode with Network and check the result. If the issue disappears, please perform a clean boot.
For the detailed steps, please refer to the step 1 and 2 in the KB article 936214 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936214).
    2.    If the issue persists, please check the system file by using the command SFC /scannow.
For more information, please refer to the KB article 929833 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833).
If the above suggestions do not resolve the issue that service fails to start up, please understand that debug and dump analysis may be required for further troubleshooting. Also, in most cases, it is necessary to check the source codes. However, debugging is out of our forum’s support boundary. A support call to our product service team is needed for the debugging service. In this case, I’d like to suggest contacting Microsoft Customer Support Service (CSS) for assistance so that this issue can be resolved efficiently.

  • Nginx.exe at Windows 7 shutdown?

I found something that worked. One way that works, but I prefer not to use it, is to open MSCONFIG and to to the Startup Tab. Remove the checkmark on RIM Desktop Platform. After removing the checkmark Re-Start the computer.  Unfortunately this will disable the RIM software from allowing your phone to remotely see files on your computer using the phone's file manager. In a very simple explanation, NGINX is a utility that works like a remote server access utility. RIM uses this service in their LINK program. The fix I used was to go in to the LINK setup. Click on This Computer {Computer name} at the top upper left. Click on Remote File Access to remove the checkmark. At the top inside of the top barder of the program window, Sign Out.
Re-start the LINK software. Log back in again. If you want to allow for Remote File Access, put back the checkmark. If everything went well, the fault should no longer appear.
Re-Boot the computer. The fault should be gone.  The more drastic way is to un-install LINK, and then re-install LINK. Then go through all the setups to get it going again.

Your fix, quoted from you below, worked super delux. I found a new problem, but this would not affect most users unless they were using remote acces from the BB phone to their computer.
When RIM Desktop Platform is unchecked to not start up, there is no longer access over the mobile network to have a direct link from the phone to the computer that is running BB Link. In simple terms, the user of the BB phone can look at and modify files on their computer while out on the road. This can come in very handy in the case you need some info that is on your computer at home or at the office.
For this to work in the first place, the Link software must be logged in to the account, and be set up to allow this. If I remember correctly by default this feature does work.

    Start
Search for msconfig and run it
    Choose the Startup tab
    UNCHECK RIM Desktop Platform
    Apply & Reboot
NOTE: DO NOT disable RIMBBLaunchAgent, otherwise the USB drivers will not load and your BlackBerry will not be recognized by Windows when plugged in.

  • KT4/V Windows XP Shutdown issue

    I have a KT4/V 2100XP, 512MB, ATI 9500Pro.
Windows XP w/ SP1 all drivers are current versions.
After windows is installed and I get all the drivers loaded it starts having problems shutting down. It will shutdown, it just takes locse to two minutes for it to start. the shutdown process. When you click shutdown it will sit and do nothing for about 60 - 90 seconds before it starts to shutdown.
I have reinstalled the system twice since I've had this board and had the same issue every time.
    New ideas welcome.

It sounds like the same problem I had with Windows 2000. It turned out to be an OS issue, not hardware.
One of the numerous Hotfixes Microsoft released caused my system to hang for over a minute. I searched through the Microsoft Windows 2000 Forum and found a thread that recommended deleting Hotfix Q329170. Once it was removed, the problem was solved.
I suspect you have a similar problem since you, like me, loaded all Microsoft's recommended updates. See if you have the same hotfix for Win XP. If not, do a search on the Microsoft Windows XP forum for 'slow' or 'delayed shutdown'. I'm sure you are not the only one who has this issue.

  • HT4628 Trouble getting into specific networks in network preferences

When I enter network preference, click Advanced, and try to double click on a network name to get into the security of a specific network, nothing happens when I double click. I used to double click, and the window would come up with the security settings, and I could change the password, etc. Why isn't this working? Pressing "return" doesn't do anything either. Thanks ahead of time for your time in helping me out!

I don't know what you deleted; I didn't advise you to delete anything. You may need to restore one or both of the following items from your backups. The first is in your home folder. Restore the second item only if you were prompted for your administrator password, and entered it. After restoring, log out and log back in.
    ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
    /Library/Keychains/System.keychain

  • Mail: How to check an account ONLY from specific Network Location?

I use multiple macs, and use my .mac account to synchronize mail accounts, rules, smart mailboxes, signatures, etc.
However, I'd actually like to specifically NOT check certain accounts on some machines.
Even though the account settings are synced, I thought I might be able to take advantage of "Network Locations" to create specific network locations like HOME or WORK and thusly create a combination of mail and network location preferences that would solve my particular need. The idea being that it would allow me to specify in mail's settings (somehow) that a particular mail account should only check the server for messages if the current network location is actually WORK, and if the network location was HOME, it should just not check.
Some other apps (ie: Snerdware's Groupcal) will check the network location setting and not perform checks if the current location is not the expected one.
So the question is, is there some way to make Mail.app 2.1.3 on Tiger do this?

30 messages displayed is the default, but you can change that.  On your email page, under "settings" is an option to change the number of messages per page.  One  option is "no limit."

I am considering the purchase of an iMac or Macbook and want to know whether I can import my iTunes library of  +400 albums from my Windows PC over my Home Network?  300 of these albums have been imported from CD's, so would not want to have to do that again.

Just copy the entire /Musci/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer.
The libraries will be identical (date added, ratings, artwork, etc.).
You can do this easily over the network.

  • Safari Won't Connect To Specific Network. Firefox Will!

I have a specific issue with Safari (and Mail.app) on a specific network I try to connect to.
The network is one offered on a train service, and pre-Lion I've been able to connect to it just fine.
All of a sudden my MBP and MBA are able to connect to the network - but if I try and start Safari it just bounces away in the dock.
On the rare occasion that Safari starts it won't connect to any webpages. Mail.app also refuses to work in the same way.
If I use Firefox - I can use the internet as normal (although I still have issues with Mail.app).
The bigger issue occurs when I am off the train and trying to use my laptop on other networks - Safari and Mail continue to refuse to work, even though the laptop tells me I'm connected. I have to restart the entire machine.
I've deleted networks from the SysPrefs, reordered them, tried a Google DNS etc etc. I've Googled the issue like crazy, and even contacted the train operator! - and so far come up with nothing.
Any help would be much apprecieted.

Do you have anti virus software installed or any apps like Little Snitch?
Try deleting the cache associated with Safari.
    Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari
Move the Cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac, try Safari.
~ (Tilde) character represents the Home folder.
For LIon:   To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library

  • Using a specific network interface

Hello, I would like to know how I can force Mac OS X to use a specific network interface while connecting to my mac mini (from the iMac):
I'm connected to the internet (I mean the local network) using the airport, and I connected my iMac with the mac mini using an ethernet cable (because I want to transfer files faster, and I don't want to reboot my mini in target disk mode), but when I connect to the mini (using the "share" feature) it seems to use the airport connection. Of course I could disable the airport interface to force it to use the ethernet one (and it works) but I don't want to...
So, how can I force a specific interface? I don't mind using a command line command to mount it initially btw.
    Thanks

    Hello,
Try using a different IP address range to put each interface in a different subnet. For example use 10.0.0.x and 255.255.255.0 for the Ethernet connection and 192.18.2.x and 255.255.255.0 for the Airport.

  • Using manual IP address only for specific networks

For my home network I use DHCP with manual address because I have to forward some ports specifically to my computer. However this causes problems when connecting to other networks. For some reason this setting stays active even when using other networks. Therefore, I can't connect to say my school network because the setting has to be set to plain DHCP. Is there a way to use manual IP address only for specific networks?

System Preferences > Network > Locations and add a location for your home with its manual settings. Add a location for other DHCP locations. Then when you want to connect at another DHCP location select that location from your locations dropdown.

  • Airport refuses to connect to selected "Specific Network"

In Network under System Preference, I have my home wi-fi selected as the "Specific Network" on the Airport panel. About half the time the MBP wakes, it will connect with a neighbor's wi-fi. I've restarted the machine, changed the setting and restored it. Nothing works. This started acting up only a couple weeks ago. I've had this MBP since December.
    MBP 15" C2D   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Thank you, BDAqua. Creating a new network location solved my problem. I would've replied earlier; I wanted to be sure it continued to work over a few days.

  • My wireless printer appears as offline on my Macbook, despite being visible on the network and printable from a Windows laptop on the same network. Was fine previously. Any thoughts?

    I have a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8.
I have a wirelessly networked printer (HP PhotoSmart D110).
All worked well until a couple of months ago.
For reasons unknown, I stopped being able to print wirelessly to the printer from the Macbook. It appears as offline on the HP Photosmart utillity that pops up.
I can print to teh same printer from a Windows PC on the same network.
I have also logged onto the printer, using it's IP address and printed its test page, so obvioulsy not a printer fault as such.
The old PowerBook on the same network doesn't print to it either.
Grateful for any thoughts for quick tests or tips.
    Paul.

Nice one Ron, you're a star.
    That was a complete fix.
My preferences was slightly different, but it was the same approach.
I had 4 printers listed. Some old ones that I no longer had and the one that didn't work. I deleted all of them, then hit '+'.
It came back up, searched for new drivers, then I was able to print as per normal.
    Result.
