Slow wired connection no anti virus used.

I have a 3T time capsule used as a hard drive. I also send out my wifi from it.
On Ethernet between my desktop and the capsule, to copy a file to the drive is about 30 secs per MB! Why might it be so slow please? Thanks.
ps - no anti virus software and doing manual copies /back ups to the drive.

Do you have wireless turned on as well as ethernet on the desktop computer.. ?? If so turn off the wireless.
Make sure IPv6 in ethernet is set to link local only on the computer.
No improvement check in the network preferences that the actual ethernet link speed is gigabit..
A simple ifconfig from terminal will show it to you if you don't know where to find details like the above.

  • Please help! Very slow wired connection as well!

    Hi guys!
I really need some help here... I received my very first Macbook Pro yesterday and once I begun using it I noticed I was having the exact same problem as many people here with wi-fi connection: even though the system says I'm connected (full bars!) I can barely surf the web - it's either too slow or doesn't connect at all.
Ok, after reading many posts around here I decided to swith to the wired conncetion and update the whole system to see if anything changed with the wi-fi issue, but I was surprised to find out that the cable conncetion had the exact same problem!! It either won't connect at all or it will take more than 2 minutes (!!) to open a page (Apple's website, for instance). That's unacceptable, I have a high speed internet service at home!!
Also, the problem is not with my internet service, right now I'm writing from a netbook connect to the wi-fi net just fine....
Any thoughts, suggestions, pleeeeaaase???? I really wanted to love my experience with my Macbook and I didn't want to return it (it's got a gorgeous screen!!) but it's useless without an internet connection.... By the way, my router is a Linksys.
    Thank you, guys!!
    Renata

    Hi, sig!
My router is WRT54G Linksys with updated firmware. My modem is TG508 Thomson, I´m pretty sure with a not updated firmware.
This morning I called apple and we fixed the wi-fi issue using open dns servers, it´s now working properly.
However, surprisingly the wired connection is still not working!! The apple lady told me to update my modem firmware and in case connection isn´t restablished after that procedure to take it to an apple tech for support since it´s then probably a hardware issue. I´ll try the modem firmware update but I´m obviously not taking it anywhere (my MAC is 3 days old!), if update doesn´t work I´ll rather return the machine.
I still have one doubt though: should that open DNS procedure been done also for the wired connection (ethernet)?? I understand nothing of that procedure (as you can see! all I know is it has been done exclusively for airport connection....
    Thank you for your attention!!
    Renata

  • My macbook seems to be very slow in connectivity to the internet using our airport extreme while others can just go buzzing along surfing the net and/or downloading items. What gives with mine?

i don't understand why my Macbook seems to balk or go incredibly slow when I'm trying to connect or surf the internet at home. When I'm at work ( I use a company owned laptop and have used one of their laptops for several years, this one noe for about three years but have just started having this problem in the last 6 - 8 months) it works fine but at home slow, slow, slow!!! at home it takes about 3-5  minutes for any page to load in and if there are a lot of images or videos to load, well take a coffee break while it loads in when you come back the page might, might be loaded. I'm using my partners ibook G4 right now and connectivity is great no problem but mine had yet to even load in the apple homepage yet and I had to go get this one, turn it on, open up a browser, log in, type my question out and yet over on my laptop, it's still trying to load. Can anyone give me a clue as to what's going on?

  • Slow Wired Connection from WRT54G

I have a Dell XPS Desktop hooked via CAT5 to a WRT54G v1 running 4.20.7 in turn hooked to a BEFCM10 v4 Cable Modem hooked to Comcast 12 Megabit Service.
I feel that I am not getting the speed from internet that I am paying for.  I called Comcast to troubleshoot but it ends up not being a comcast issue.
When I run Speednet.net internet speed tests with the setup above.  I only get 9 Megabit download speed.   When I hook the desktop directly to the Linksys cable modem without the 54G router, the same speed tests get 12+ Megabit speeds.
What is causing the WRT54G to slow down the internet speed???

The WAN (Internet) port on your WRT54G is a 10/100 port, so that is not the bottleneck.   And, of course the switch on the WRT54G is also 10/100.  One website that I checked claims that your router can handle up to 20 Mbps thru the Internet port, but I don't know for certain that this is true.
Are you running any peer-to-peer (P2P) software?  This is a known cause for router slowdowns and disconnections.  The problems can occur even when you are not using the P2P software, because it can take the router as much as 5 days to "forget" the hundreds of P2P connections, and regain this memory space.  If you are using P2P, stop for a week, and see if this corrects your problem.
Are you using any of the router's "logging" functions?  This is also a known cause for slowdowns.   The "logging" functions should only be used when you are having a problem with the router, and you need to track down some info.  Otherwise leave all logging turned off.
Did you insert a "Domain name" into the router unnecessarily?   If you have a Domain name listed in the router, erase it, save your settings, and see if the router still works.  If it does, retest the speed.
If none of the above correct your problem, I would suggest that you download and install the latest firmware for your router.  (You need the latest firmware anyway because there was a security fix in the last firmware upgrade. )   After the firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.  If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
Retest your speed after the firmware upgrade, and see if this fixed your problem.
Please report back with your results.

  • Slow wired connection with WRT54G

    My ISP is Comcast.
I'm using their modem which includes my digital voice connection. From there I'm wired straight to the WRT54G and from there I'm wired to my PC. However, when I connect from the Comcast modem to my PC I get download speeds of 12mbps and when I connect from the WRT54G (wired) it drops to 1mbps or even 786kbps.
I've tried resetting the modem and the router. I've tried changing the MTU. I have the latest firmware version (v8.0.2). The last resort is getting a new cable modem (suggested in the forums) but I think that's out of the question since my digital voice is connected to the Comcast modem.
Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Please state the make and exact model number of your modem (not the WRT54G).
Using an ethernet cable, wire your computer directly to the modem (not the WRT54G).  Verify that you have a properly working Internet connection.  Then do the following:
Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig /all" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key.  Copy all the results to your next post, except that if your "IP address" does not start with 192, then post only the first 3 digits of your "IP address" along with the rest of the info.

  • WRT350N - Slow, Slow, Wired Connection

My XP system seemed to die, Net-wise. I had a 6 month old Linksys WRT54GX4, and it seemed to have died...sort of. That is, if I tried to get into the router (wired), it would time out. I kept trying and eventually a few packets would leak in. I could eventually get to the setup, but it was SO erratic as to be impossible.
After I tried everything I could think of, I did an in-place reinstall of XP. No difference.
I went out to buy a replacement router. Fry's doesn't carry it anymore (a recall???).
So I got the fancy "N" 350 (didn't want N but it's what there is).
Plugged it all in. I have MORE connectivity, but speed test tells me my DL is about 30 (versus my normal of about 320).
Then I connected the computer directly to the DSL bridge and I get my full 320-ish. Through the router, and often the speed test doesn't even START. And to add insult, wireless is FINE. Just wired. I changed cables. No difference. By it working connected to the DSL, I have eliminated the computer as the bottleneck. But, did the 54 die, and the new 350 CAME nearly dead????? Doesn't make any sense.
Changing the MTU to 1365 (as suggested elsewhere here) didn't make any difference. It's an Intel Gigabit NIC (built-in on Asus MB).
Side note: when I enter SETUP, it keeps telling me that "VALUE IS OUT OF RANGE" for about three clicks. I look at my settings and they look fine. Happens on one or more other pages as well.
Frankly, I've always had issues with Linksys SETUP in the various models, so this doesn't surprise me.
Since wireless is working fine, I don't see this as being an issue.
    Any suggestions??????

Hi… I would suggest you to download the latest firmware for this router, reset the router, upgrade the firmware and reconfigure the route from the setup page. Then reduce the MTU to 1365. On your PC change the card speed to either 100 Mbps half duplex or 10 Mbps half duplex. Now check the connectivity on your wired PC.

  • Getting product state for Anti Virus using WMI.

    Hi All,
I have seen lot on blogs and discussion on productstate for AV, AS and FW. But none of them give the complete information of product state.
Do MSDN has any link that explains the product state completely. Or any relevant link for this.
Moreover pre Vista os using WMI we can find the version of AS, AV ans FW, but in post Vista OS WMI does not provide the information of version of the product so how we can achieve this in post Vista os.

    Have you looked at this?

  • [Solved]Fail to use wired connection, but can still use wireless.

I had suspected the problem to be related to a recent package update from any time between 6/2 to 6/5, though the problem only started yesterday(6/6 in my time zone). I have already tried downgrading internet related packages that has recent upgrades, but the problem is still there. So I need help. What information do I need to provide to help pin-point what is causing this problem?

But I still hope someone can help me in understanding what to look for when such situations happen again. What data I should gather to help other's get information about my problem.
By the way, I'm quite sure it is not a cable problem, because the windows in the same machine can link onto the net when arch was still unable to link onto the net. During the entire day, I refreshed the package database, and the only update was vim. So what could have caused the problem to fix itself again?

  • TC slow ethernet speed w/ mac mini, not anti-virus

new TC 1tb, running wireless to one macbook pro, one sony laptop, and ethernet to mac mini. update done to TC, including airport utility. no anti virus.
using it as the primary wireless source, with cable modem.
first backup was awfully slow, both by wireless, then do-over by ethernet.
speed on local network streaming mp4s through ethernet cable is bad to awful. copying files from TC to usb (in mac mini) is awful. searching for songs through itunes is slow (though library is 500gb).
the heat explanation is of course, just laughable. you give me a beautiful flat piece of equipment and you don't expect me to put my mac mini on top? terrible design flaw if true.
also, tried the re-boot and the shortened DCHP time.
no other good explanations that i could find.
So unless there are some great ideas out there, i guess
i should understand from all the threads that this thing just doesn't work as a primary file server. and its not so good at backup either.
its just too slow. please help if anyone has another suggestion, but i think that regardless i have to take it back.
glad i didn't erase my library from the WD My Book.
what a waste of my time this has been.

just bought a new 12" Powerbook and it will not connect to my local dial up ISP any faster than 28k. I've had the same ISP for over ten years. I've had the same phone line in my same apartment for over ten years. The G3 iBook I just sold connected at 56k almost every time. The G4 iMac I have at home connects at 56k almost every time. The Performa 6400 I used to have connected at 56k almost every time. The G4 Sawtooth I have in my music studio a couple of blocks away using a different phone line connects at 56k almost every time. Same ISP for over ten years, two different phone lines that work fine with four other Macs, the only Mac I've had that won't connect at 56k is my brand new Powerbook. It won't connect at 56k using OS 10.3.9 or 10.4 or 10.4.4. I tested the connection with CNET's online modem bandwidth test page and the Powerbook modem was connecting at about 26k.
so I took my PowerBook to the Apple store in San Francisco, they sent it to be repaired and when it came back said they replaced the modem, but it still won't connect at 56k when all my other Macs will.
so I took my PowerBook back to the Apple store in San Francisco, and they connected it to a phone line and got a 31k connection and told me, Well the modem connects, so as far as we're concerned it works, and 56k is only the maximum theoretical connection speed and Apple does not guarantee you will actually get that modem baud rate, so we are not going to do anything else about it. I told them that there is nothing theoretical about all my other Macs connecting to the same ISP at higher speeds than the PowerBook and that Apple should be able to test the PowerBook to determine if their own tech guys can get a 56k connection with my PowerBook. The Apple store "genius" called his manager, who refused to do any more work on the computer.

  • Is there an anti virus program for mac 9.1? Think I have a virus

I don't use an anti virus - using outlook express I got a strange message with no subject or sender - just a blank line. I tried deleting it but it wouldn't be deleted. Since then every time I try to delete it - it crashes the system. Same with Internet Explorer. And now my main screen icons will just 'disappear' from the screen then it crashes.
I tried looking for an antivirus but all of them seem to be for 9.2 or higher and I don't know what to do - if I upload to 9.2 will I loose any programs or files - new to this from the PC world. Thanks
    G4   Mac OS 9.1.x

    Hi, debbieM -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
It is doubtful that you have a virus - no virus which can harm OS 9 has been released in well over 10 years.
Getting a message every now and then with no subject and no body is not unusual. There are a couple of ways to get rid of a message without opening it.
Click on an adjacent message which is okay to delete, then hold down the Shift key and select the blank messages - none of them will open. Once you have selected all the ones for deletion, press the Delete key.
Or, click and hold on a message; or press the Control key and click and hold on a message. A contextual menu should appear; one of the choices in that menu shuld be to delete the messge. If you choose that, it should happen without the message ever opening.
Things you can do to make Outlook Express run smoother -
    • Increase the Preferred memory allocation for it. Adding 20 or 30 thousand to the original Preferred amount, or even more if you have sufficient RAM, is not excessive.
Article #18278 - Assigning More Memory to an Application
    • Compact the databases. To do that - with OE not running, hold down the Option key and start up OE. A splash screen will open, asking if you want to compact the database files - click okay, and follow the prompts.
For Internet Explorer, increase its Preferred memory, a lot. Adding 30 to 50 thousand is not excessive.
And now my main screen icons will just 'disappear' from the screen then it crashes.
That could indicate one or more other problems.
    • How full is your hard drive? It is good practice to not allow your hard drive to get more than 85% full. When it does get more full than that, odd behaviors including an unstable OS begin occuring.
    • Try rebuilding the desktop file (note that the desktop file has very little to do with the desktop). To rebuild the desktop safely, restart - immediately hold down the Shift key until you get the "Extensions Off" message; then release Shift and hold down the Command and Option keys until you get the splash screen asking if you want to rebuild the desktop; click yes (or okay). Once that's done, restart to turn your extensions back on.
    • Boot to your most recent OS 9 Install CD, one valid for that machine - ideally it would be OS 9.1, the same as is on the machine. Once booted to the CD, run Disk First Aid from the Utilities folder on the CD. Let DFA have a look at your hard drive, and allw it to repair what it can - it may take more than one pass to do this, especially if the drive is rather full.
If DFA finds things it just can't fix, post back with the description of the problems found.
if I upload to 9.2 will I loose any programs or files....
Updating the OS from OS 9.1 to OS 9.2.1 should not cause any loss of files.
However, in general updating an OS is not a fix for a damaged or unstable OS. It is better to get the OS now on the drive healthy before updating it.
When the machine goes unstable (icons begin disappearing, etc.) are there any error messages?

  • Can any body advise me what anti virus i can use?

ey, good afternoon all. i got a message when i'm trying to download something that i need to install an anti virus so that my downloading will not get slow and also my internet connection. the message advice me to download avira. can any body who is expert here tell me of what anti virus i can download into my mac os x mavericks 10.9.5?
    thank you

Sophos WILL slow your Mac down.
There are many forms of ‘Malware’ that can affect a computer system, of which ‘a virus’ is but one type, ‘trojans’ another. Using the strict definition of a computer virus, no viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions. The same is not true of other forms of malware, such as Trojans. Whilst it is a fairly safe bet that your Mac will NOT be infected by a virus, it may have other security-related problem, but more likely a technical problem unrelated to any malware threat.
You may find this User Tip on Viruses, Trojan Detection and Removal, as well as general Internet Security and Privacy, useful: The User Tip seeks to offer guidance on the main security threats and how to avoid them.

  • How do I disconnect from Wireless to use wired connection?

Hi - I'm new to this and I apologize if this question is ridiculously easy.
I am using a cable modem in which I have plugged my WRT160Nv2 wireless router. I am supporting three computers here in my home; my laptop (both wired and wireless), my daughters laptop (wireless only), and my desktop (wired only).
Everything works great and I have to give all the credit to CISCO and the excellent software which automatically solves every connection problem that comes up.
My laptop and desktop are connected to the wireless router via cable.
My question is strictly about my laptop. When I leave my office in the house and go into another room, I establish the wireless connection. Now I am back in my home office room, I want to use my wired connection. How do I do this? Do I need to disable my wireless connection so that my wired connection takes over? Again, I do have my laptop connected to the wireless router via cat5.
I want to do this strictly for the speed of the connection. I've read that a wired connection is double if not more in Mbps.
This laptop is running Win XP Pro, SP3.
I hope this furnishes enough info to assist in an answer.
    Thanks in advance.
    John
P.S.. I really do want to educate myself regarding the equipment I am using and not have to ask such basic questions. Are there any books or websites you can recommend that can start me out and go as technical as I choose to?

Windows by default uses the fastest connection possible. If you have a wireless and wired connection active at the same time it depends on how fast both connections are rated. Wireless connections tend to change depending on the distance. Wireless 802.11g goes up to 54 Mbit/s. Wireless 802.11n can go up to some 300 Mbit/s. Wired connections are usually either gigabit ethernet (1000 Mbit/s) or fastethernet (100 Mbit/s).
Thus, which is picked depends on your computer. You should check the connection status of both connections in the network connections control panel. It shows you the current wireless and wired speed (the latter won't change of course). Very often, the wired connection is preferred to the wireless connection. Now with 802.11n connections the wireless connection is preferred if your wired connection is only fastethernet.
As your WRT160Nv2 has only FastEthernet LAN ports you have to check how fast the wireless connection is. If you have a 802.11n wireless adapter in your laptop it may show up the wireless connection faster then 100 Mbit/s. Depending on the setting it may change occassionally between 54 Mbit/s and speeds higher then 100 Mbit/s which would lead Windows to swap connections. If you see that problem it is better to switch off the wireless in the laptop while you have a wired connection...
A wired connection is more reliable and stable then a wireless connection. With wireless you can have interference. Thus, even though a wired connection may be slower then a wireless one you may prefer to use the wired connection anyway. And some people prefer to turn off the wireless to avoid radiation.
To sum up: usually you don't have to switch off the wireless, unless you experience problems because of the mentioned changing speeds of the wireless connection. The computer will always only use one connection. Not both.

  • Force Win 8 to use wired connection

    Hi Folks,
I'm running Win8 on an Acer Desktop.  I have cable internet from Comcast, with the modem running thru a router, then to the pc.
I want to be able to use the wired connection for the desktop access to the internet, and use the wireless ONLY for the other devices in the house, i.e., laptop in another room, blu-ray player, printer.  However, no matter what I do, the desktop uses
the [much slower!] wireless connection, rather than the wired one.
I've hunted on the net for a solution, but nothing I've found works.  Anyone have a solution?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestions.  Unhappily, when I open Network Connections and Advanced Settings, the first item shown in your screen shot, "vEthernet (VNIC)," is not there.  The other three are shown, just as in your screen shot, but vEthernet (VNIC)
    is absent.
I bypassed the router and connected directly to the pc from the modem, and my speeds are 3 or 4 times faster.  Of course, I then no longer have wireless connections for my other devices.
While I had the pc directly connected to the modem, I checked the Network Connections again, but "vEthernet (VNIC) was still not on the list.
Any ideas?  I'd really like to make this work, and I can't understand why the pc, having a wired connection, insists on connecting wirelessly.

  • Since download of Firefox Hello desktop & laptop both on Windows 7 are very slow even after refresh, download history removed and anti virus software turned off

Since download of Firefox Hello my home desktop & laptop, both on Windows 7, are very slow to open. I have refreshed firefox, removed download history and turned off the anti virus software in extensions. All the plugins are up to date. Can we revert back to Firefox without Firefox Hello?

Firefox Hello is simply a wrapper for technology already in Firefox, it doesn't negatively impact performance if you aren't using it. Are you saying that your entire computer is slow or just Firefox?

  • Norton anti-virus slows down the start up time in Windows Vista

    Hi,
please help, i am being driven to distraction by the slow start up time of my laptop.
I've only had it for a few weeks and don't use it for anything beyond producing word documents etc.
It has gradually been getting slower on startup and i suspect it has something to do with the Norton anti-virus software on it and the updates for norton that i have downloaded (thinking that this was the right thing to do).
Looking at the problems and solutions log on the computer the date that it really started to slow down coincides with downloading a norton update, which i have been unable to uninstall to check if this really is the problem.
Further i have tried doing a System Restore, my laptop was not able to complete.
I am stuck on the DOS screen for 10 mins with the message:
    PXE-E32 FTFP open timeout
I have no idea what this means but the Problems and Solutions log says something about a system hang?
I have looked on the web for other anti-virus software and they all seem to have one problem or another and slow computers down on startup.
Does anyone know of a solution or do i just have to make a cup of tea when i switch my computer on and lace it with vodka till it has booted up completely!
I am a novice when it comes to using computers so would welcome any non-technical advice.
    thanks
    laura

    Hi guys
I would like to add some words about my experience using the Symantec Norton Antivirus software.
I have used this software 3 year long. It was great because it supports one of the best virus filtering options BUT it really slow downs the operating system.
I didnt use it on with Vista preinstalled notebook but on Win XP and I have to say that the notebook boot process was halted for about 30sec-1min till the whole parts of Norton Antivirus software has started It was very annoying
However, I switched to AntiVir. This is software described by marina4000 and Im really happy because the boot performance increased.
So finally I would also recommend removing this Symantec Norton Antivirus software and to switch to the other free AntiVir software ;)
    Bye
