Slow Wireless, Fine Wired

I have BT Infinity Option 1, from April 2011
My wireless has been on the fritz lately, giving intermittently very slow speeds. About half an hour ago the BT Speed Tester Lite (Beta ) (I use this as the 'proper' one keeps giving me an error and will not let me use it) was showing a speed of 1.0mbps.
I restarted the hub, the speed went to approximately 5.0mbps. Ten minutes later it is down to 0.29mbps. Both speed tests were identical on various other third party testers. My wireless hardware is fine, when it works normally I get around 17 (expected max for a non-n wireless connection). This problem has happened before and the speeds come back to normal after being variable (but very, very low) for a few days or so but it is very frustrating to have regular <1.0mbps connection speeds when I expect closer to 20.0mbps (and pay for 40mbps)
When I connect by ethernet I get 37-39mbps, which is the expected maximum for my package/account so it is unlikely to be a line problem. I do not believe there is a wireless fault on my computer hardware given that it normally and regularly connects at its maximum speed.
My home hub is type 'A' (and an early one as I was an early adopter in April 2011), Software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.57.1.3 (Type A). Could I have one of these faulty type A hubs I hear a lot about?
Also, how is it that I can't use the official speed test? This is frustrating as it would appear it's the only one BT care about or listen to.
Re-ran BT speed tester lite beta, result = 0.79mbps. This is ridiculous, I would get better speeds on normal broadband. The problem has happened before and resolved after a few days but is clearly well below acceptable speeds, almost 1/100th of what I'm paying for.
Anyone able to help or advise?

My post clearly indicates that I know the difference between wired and wireless, even the post topic says this.
My wired line speed is fine and dandy. (37-38mbps). My wireless speed is 0.3mbps. This is the problem. It has happened before and resolved after a few days, most of the time my wireless is in the range expected (17mbps being a G connection).
My main question is regarding the hub. I have a very early type A hub, is it likely to be part of the bad batch or faulty ones I have read about briefly here?

WRT54G2 v1 - Internet is Slow Wireless AND WIRED

OK, so I get my internet from a ethernet cable connected to the wall (I dont know if its cable or dsl because I live in an apartment) . When I connect from the wall to my Macbook the internet is fast with Mbps around 30. But, when I connect the ethernet cable into my router and try to access the internet, wireless or wired through the router it takes 15 seconds to load a Yahoo page or a Facebook page
Now the confusing part. When I use the wireless on my PS3 (set up with auto setting on it) it goes fast enough where it can even stream HD Netflix movies and fast enough to not get lag on Call of Duty or figting games. But, when I wanna look at a web page on my iPod Touch, Blackberry Phone, Macbook Pro, and 3DS it takes ages to load one. Interestingly enough I tried SpeedTest.net on my Macbook and these are my result when connected wirelessly (still takes ages to load a webpage, and it doesnt load hulu or youtube videos).
Any advice will help!

As the previous poster suggested do a hard reset by holding in the reset button for at least 30 second then reconfigure the router if needed. You can also try the 30-30-30 reset where by you hold in the reset button for 30 second, then while still holding in the reset button, remove the power and wait 30 seconds, then while still pressing the reset button, reapply the power and wait another 30 seconds then release the reset button and reconfigure the router if needed.
It isn't clear if you are using some kind of broadband modem. If you are not using a broadband modem, have you tried to connect the Ethernet cable that comes from the wall to one of the four networking ports on the back of the router rather than the router's WAN/Internet port? Its possible your building all ready is using a router/hub. If this is the case and your computer gets an IP address from the building's router then log into the router and on the Basic Setup page disable the router's DHCP server to avoid conflicts with the building existing DHCP server.

Wrt160N slow wireless, faster wired

I'm using my new wireless N device (version 3) and its 'very' slow when using Wireless. I direct connect (we have DSL) and it works just fine. I've read a few posts and some recommend Firmware upgrade but I just got this device recently so it seems it would be up to date. But I'm no expert in this area. Any advice?

Before reflashing the firmware,I would suggest you to redo the wireless settings of the router...
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop).In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the Wireless Tab...click on Manual...For 5 GHz ...Set the Radio Band to Wide-40MHz and change the Wide channel to159 and Standard Channel to 161-5.805GHz...For 2.4 GHz...Set the Radio Band to Wide-40MHz and change the Wide channel to 9 and Standard Channel to 11-2.462GHz...Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box.

VERY slow wireless, FAST wired internet problem

Someone... PLEASE help me. I just spent 2 hours w/apple, and they couldn't fix it.
I have the airport extreme base station. It was working FINE, until a few day/a week ago. Now when I connect using my airport card in my MBP or my iMac, it get about 17KB/sec. If I go wired, I get almost 2MB/sec. Apple coudn't help me. Is there anyway around this? My dell laptop (for work) connects to the extreme base station and gets about 2MB/sec, so it has to do with something on the Apple side.
Any suggestions? I'd hate to go and buy another router and having to scrap this expensive router and the airport express I bought. That's $300 right down the freakin' drain....

First, double-check the AirPort settings on the iMac. They should be nearly identical to those of the MBP.
Then, make sure that your iMac has the latest AirPort updates applied.
Other things to try...
- Create a new "clean" OS X user account, and then, logon as that user. (Note: You will want to keep this new account "clean," i.e., don't use it daily or add programs so that you can use it for any future troubleshooting session as needed.)
- Create a new AirPort Location, and then, switch to this location.
- Check Network Port Configurations and verify that AirPort is at the top of the list. If it's not, drag it to the top. While there, see if there are any other ports enabled that you are not using (Modem, Bluetooth, etc.) and disable them.
- Remove AirPort configuration (.plist) files. Start by moving the AirPort preference files to a safe location. OS X will rebuilt these files after you restart the computer. The particular files to try are (I's assuming that you have OS X 10.4+ on the iMac):
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
- preferences.plist
- NetworkInterfaces.plist
- com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
Start with the first one, restart the computer and check the wireless performance. If no improvement, move on to the next, and so on. Remember to move them to a "safe" location first, just in case you need to restore them.

Slow wireless but fast wired

Hi all, hopefully someone can help.
I have been getting lower speeds on my laptop for a few weeks now. I'm getting 50+mb into the house but only max 15mb to the laptop and my phone. It often drops down to below 10 and sometimes 2!
Ive reset the modem and the infinity box on many occasions which helps get the speed back up to 13-15 when it's dropped to 2mb. I've re-installed the bt software and have power cycled everything with no success.
I only recently tried the wited connection and it gets 50+mb.
I wondered if it was my wireless card which is an atheros and my laptop is an i5 acer so fairly new. I've just ordered a wirless dongle to see if it helps. The current atheros card does not seem to support and 'n' connection.
I've installed and run inssider and the best link score I can get is around 55-65. I have no idea how to understand the inssider graph but guess this is not great.
I would really appreciate some advice. Oh I am considering buying a home hub 4.0 as I am using the 3.0 version.

Don't keep resetting the modem. This could cause the DLM (Dynamic Line Management) to interpret this as a faulty line and lower your speeds.
Wireless speed will usually be slower than a wired connection. If you are getting the same sort of wireless speed on both your phone and your laptop this would tend to rule out the wireless card on your laptop.
It could be that if you turned off the smart wireless on the home hub and select a fixed channel it would improve.
As you have already downloaded inSSider you need to run it and look for the channel that has the least amount of networks on it. Once you have found this you need to set the homehub to that channel.

You may find an improvement on your laptop with a wireless dongle but this won't help your phone connection. Have a good read through the forum about the wireless performance of the HH4 before you decide to buy one. You may be better to buy another make of router.

WRT600N slow wireless speeds

I have a WRT600N router. I have one PC that is connected to the router via a wired connection. I also have an iPad (3rd generation) that is connected to the router via a wireless connection. On my PC, I went to speedtest.net and determined that I am receiving like 20MB downloads via the wired connection. However, my iPad only gets approximately less than 2 MB download speeds. I have tried reseting the router and I do have what I believe to be the latest firmware update (Firmware Version: 1.01.36 build 4). I also receive the slow download speeds when I try connecting the other wireless devices. I assume my problem has to do with some sort of configuration setting found in the router configuration page (http://192.168.1.1/). Can anyone please advise me what to do? The router is only a few feet away from my iPad so the signal strength is strong. I just don't understand why I'm receiving such slow wireless download speeds.

This may be due to the IPv6 feature on your computer. One of the solutions may be disabling IPv6. If the issue still exist after performing this step and download speed is fine when connected straight to the modem then reset reconfigure could work, just use WPA2 for the security with AES and a fixed channel for wireless.

Wireless and wired domain

Hi,
I have a small home network that has a Windows server functioning as a Primary Domain Controller. I have a WRT160 connected and a couple PCs in the house connected via cat-5. Those PCs can log into the domain fine. If I bring in my laptop it can connect to the wireless fine, map network drives, I can even remote desktop from a wired PC to the laptop. But I cant seem to get the wireless computers to "see" the domain controller and log in to the domain.
The router and local network are on the same subnet. Am I missing a setting somewhere since all the wired stuff works great but not the wireless clients?

Most likely, this seems to be a computer software firewall problem and not a router problem...To fix this problem, go into the computer software firewall on each computer, and set it to "trust" the other computers on your network.
Make sure all the computers are in the same workgroup...
The default workgroup name in Windows Vista has been changed to WORKGROUP. In WindowsXP, the default workgroup name is MSHOME...

One Solution for Fixing Slow Wireless Connection

Quick and easy solution for slow wireless connection.
My hardwired PC connection was working fine over FIOS, but my wireless connection through my Macbook Pro was soooo slowwww, although the machine itself was fine. Pages would take forever to appear, then finally sort of pop up. Didn't really seem to be a Mac problem, just a connection problem.
After searching forever to find a fix, I found a quick & easy solution that works at least for now: change your DNS address.
I'm not a techie so I don't know ALL of the implications of doing this, but in desperation, it has worked for me and I think at no risk to your network or machine. Changing my DNS address has made my connection blazing fast and relieved many weeks of frustration.
HOW: I can only share how to change on a Mac. (Please chime in if you can give directions for PC. ) Just go to this Apple support page, which will outline exactly how to do it. I used 4.2.2.2, I think you can also use 4.2.2.1 as the DNS address. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2002

Actually this is a common problem with Mac OSX (http://rubyisbeautiful.com/2008/2/8/osx-dns-fix-update) and how it does DNS lookups and pertains to routers that provide the internal gateway (i.e. 192.168.1.1) as the DNS address which is what the ActionTec does by default.
You can change that at the router level to either push out Verizon's dns that the router then uses or any other open dns server. I had to do this a long time ago for some of the OS X boxes on my network.

Windows Vista = very slow wireless network

I have a brand new Lenovo ThinkPad Z61p. A great machine, great performance. But Vista seems to get in its way.
The first thing I did, was to re-install Windows Vista to get a clean machine, without alle the junk that comes with it. At work, the wireless network worked just fine - but when I came home, it was so slow. I mean REALLY slow. If I turned the wireless network card off, and plugged in a cable, I was flying on the Internet. But for the wireless adapter, even a page like msdn.microsoft.com could take 3-4 minutes just to load.
I thought the issue was the drivers for the wireless network adapter, but later, in my desperate attempt to solve the problem, I removed a Windows feature called Windows DFS Replication service, which solved my problem.
This was 4 weeks ago - and now the problem has returned. I've been reading a lot of forum posts around the web. I've uninstalled some other features, disabled IPv6, disabled Vista Auto-tuning ( i did that 4 weeks ago as well)...
Nothing is working. I've also changed the default Network authentication mode, I've updated the drivers for the Intel Pro Wireless 3945abg, changed the wireless mode and a lot of things. Nothing is working.
Does anyone in here have the same issues, or does anyone know what is wrong?

I picked up a new IBM ThinkPad T60P (Wide) running Vista Business, and I am experiencing the same problems with an extremely slow wireless connection. I get the same slow performance on the wireless network in my office as in my home.
The second I disable the wireless and plug in the cable directly to the router (ZyXeL) everything runs perfectly. I also tested connecting an Apple AirPort to the router (via cable) and connected directly to the AirPort as an access point instead of connecting to my normal wireless network, and then everything was working just fine for some reason (almost as fast as when I connect directly to the router via cable)!
The really weird thing is that I get really quick download rates on at least one website (www.dailyrush.dk) where I can download files at 1.1 MB/s (I should have 15 mbit downstream). The web pages of that website still load pretty slow though when I'm browsing. Most other websites that I have tested load insanely slowly, both when I'm just browsing the pages and when I'm downloading files. For example a 1024 x 695 pixel JPG on Flickr.com might take several minutes to load, or simply time out. The Google front page sometimes takes 15 seconds to load.
I have my old laptop parked right besides the new one, both connected to the same router on wireless, and the old laptop (IBM ThinkPad T41 running XP) performs fine - downloading anywhere from 10 to 100 times faster!
It also takes forever to connect to VPN, perhaps 15 or 20 seconds on the Vista laptop and no more than 2 seconds on the XP machine.
When I ping www.google.com in a command prompt I get some packet loss (between 25 and 100 %) but reasonable ping times averaging about 45ms which is the same as on my old laptop.
I have tried pretty much everything:
Disabling Windows Firewall
Disabling TCP/IP v6 and those other entries in the wireless adapter configuration that are new in Vista
Disabling security on the router entirely
Changing security on the router to WPA and WPA2
Changing the channel on the router (tried several available channels)
Switching between 802.11 a/b/g modes on the router
Booting up in safe mode (heard that worked for someone with a similar problem)
Updating the wireless adapter driver to the newest version
Installing all available updates from Windows Update
Moving my laptop really close to the router (duh)
Uninstalling MacAfee
Uninstalling Bullguard
Uninstalling a bunch of pre-installed IBM stuff
I have come across several threads online where people have had the exact same problem and solved it by uninstalling the pre-installed MacAfee software. My laptop came with MacAfee too but I uninstalled it right away and installed Bullguard instead. When I noticed the connection problems I uninstalled Bullguard too, but little did it help.
I really hope that someone can help me out here ... I'm kind of running out of ideas :-( Thanks in advance.

Slow Wireless Internet (BT homehub)

Hello, I have a problem with slow, wireless internet with the BT Broadband Homehub 2 (black). I am using a 1g Macbook 2 running 10.4.11.
A quick summary of my problem: Recently, there was a fault on my line that was affecting my phone and my broadband. BT quickly repaired the fault and reset the broadband as I complained about the speed. Connection monitors and speed tests all say that everything is running fine although I Firefox and Safari are loading pages extremely slowly; streaming of media is impossible and it sometimes times out before I can even send webmail. When I first got the connection it was lightning fast (so much so that friends commented on it when they came over). I have see that lots of people seem to be having this problem with Macbooks and I am 99.9% certain that the issue is a mac software/hardware issue. I have tried EVERYTHING that has been suggested in other threads
1.I have manually entered different recommended DNS figures
2. I have changed the wireless channels
3. I have manually entered the DNS figures supplied by the ISP
4. I have rebooted with default settings
Nothing seems to work. I'm a little bit out of my depth with this sort of thing but I have noticed that the IP address supplied by my router to airport settings doesn't correspond with the IP address in the
ISP info. I tried changing that but then I couldn't connect at all. Somebody must know what is going on here as I've seen this problem quoted on this and other forums. Is it a problem that apple are aware of? Somebody please help as this is very very frustrating.

No idea if it worked for the OP, some never return to tell us what happened.
My suggestion should speed up a lot of connections, and never hurt anything, but not sure what the mentioned problem was, but my suggestion won't likely help connecting in the first place, unless it really is connecting, not just getting anywhere once connected.
DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.254.3.183 behind the scenes.

E4200 Slow Wireless download and Network File Sharing

When I first got the E4200 up and running I was able to transfer files from my wireless laptop to a wired laptop at speeds of over 2 MBps(distance was over 40 ft). Now I have both laptops running wireless and a desktop that is wired via ethernet to the 4200 router and network file sharing runs much slower. Right now network transfer speeds are around 500-550 kBps.
Wireless network speeds are being affected also. Wi-fi d/l speeds via Cisco speed test is usually 5-6x slower than my wired speed tests, with upload speeds being faster than the d/l speed(Laptop is only 2 feet away from router for testing). And sometimes the wireless d/l speeds will slow down all the way to .15 mbps.
Has anyone come across this problem and found a fix for it, or have some suggestions? The router settings are mostly default and I have reset it to factory defaults via web interface and tried power cycling. But nothing so far has worked. I would hate to have to return this router and go back to the wrt54g.

Ok, well I tried all these and changing the MTU down to 1365 made it run real slow, so I found out the optimal mtu and switched between auto and manual 1500, and auto gave me more consistent speeds. It does seem to be running a bit faster with the name change of the 5 ghz band, and changing the channel of the 2.4 ghz band(Name changing 2.4 band did not make any noticable differences).
Right now I am getting download speeds around 10 mbps on the vista laptop(wireless), while the windows 7 desktop(wired) and laptop(wireless) are usually around 5.3-6 mbps. File sharing between the windows 7 machines are 4.3 MBps and 2.9 MBps between vista laptop and W7 desktop. Upload speeds on all machines are around 7mbps.
I am happier with the more consistent speeds between all machines instead of really fast between just 2, but am confused to why the vista laptop is running faster and my upload speed is faster than the download speeds on 2 of my machines.

Snow Leopard freezing and slow wireless

I installed Snow leopard, installation went fine since then my computer will randomly freeze for increments of 30 seconds up to a few minutes. Happens on iTunes, Quicktime and safari. I also find to have a very slow wireless connection since the installation. Any ideas?

strange, my wifi's as fast as it normally was.
machine is: macbook 13.3" unibody 2ghz, 4gb ram
wiped it clean beforehand, installed SL fresh then restored my work via time-machine on install
Cocktail's a good util to customize your wifi speed, although it won't work on SL
My machine is set to 64bit mode though, however to be honest the 32/64 bit is a mystery at the moment, seems the kernel remains at 32 whereas the rest can happily go to 64bit with 64bit apps running happily against 32bit ones.
May want to time-machine your work, install fresh and restore from time machine. just use a usb-portable or huge memory stick, will only need to do it once.

The best way to connect wireless and wired for a WRT160N.

It took me about 4 hours to find out how to connect wireless and wired to a network using model WRT160N. Here is what I have done. First install the CD when it says there is not connection connect your PC, Modem and router Andy any wireless are wired products, after that do what the linksys advisor tells your which is default. When it gives you the security key write it down because you will need it for your wireless and wired Products. Under security mode type your SDD name and where key 1 is type your security password with was given to you. Remember all you wireless products have to have the same SDD Like Linsys and all your wired products have to have a different name like Linsys2 but your Key 1 numbers has to stay the same. That is all you have to do. Remember that wireless and wired has to be in sequence. That should do it.

I guess that all depends on how critical your data is in relation to how much time you want to spend doing the erasure. Those higher level erasure options can take a significant amount of time to complete. Personally I don't have anything on my Mac that I think is worth more time then a simple erasure even if that does leave it some what recoverable. To me it seems some people are going overboard on this issue.

Using a WRT54G as a second wireless and wired router on a LAN

I have setup a WRT54G as a second wired and wireless router on my local LAN.
The WAN wired side of the WRT54G is setup completely DHCP. It gets IP 192.168.1.104 most of the time. (I have used a PC with DHCP on theis ethernet wire and it gets to the internet OK).
The LAN side of the WRT54G is setup as 192.168.20.1 and all wireless and wired devices connecting to it get ips of 192.168.20.xxx and communicate between them selfs perfectly. However, none of them can get to the internet through the WRT54G. What have I done wrong?

I guess your WRT54G is not connected to Internet directly, but it's connected to another router that has Internet access.
If this is the case, you can configure this device as access point/hub only in order to get Internet access from the other router. Ignore the WAN connection on this WRT54G, just connect both router's LAN port with crossover cable.. After that configure the WRT54G's wireless setting. Document wont print on wireless or wired

I have a HP Photosmart6520 e-All-in-One. I have had it for about 6 months with no problems until today I am trying to print a document and it wont print. I tried it both ways from my Dell laptop, wireless and wired this document will not print. So I used HP Print doctor and was able to print a test page twice. I am assumming it is the document but for the life of me I can't figure out why.I even turned off my firewall and tried to print again with no luck and there is nothing showing up in the Print Que. Thanks for your help in advance
