Slow wireless network since Vision upgrade

I was "upgraded" to the new look vision on Wednesday the 5th of June. The next day I noticed that my iPhone 5 and Nexus 7 tablet was getting a very slow wireless connection. I reset the hub but the problem still persisted even though it was showing a full signal.
I then changed from BBC1HD to the BBC1 freeview and the phone and tablet sprung to life. I changed back to the HD channel and the wireless crawled to a stop. I can now replicate this everytime.
My BTHOMEHUB3 is connected directly to the Vision box via a 2m ethernet cable (yes I have tried replacing the cable without success and have tried connecting to different hub ports). Speedtest indicates a download speed of 76mbps download and 15 mbps upload. When I switch to the HD channels the download speed drops to 58mbps with no change to the upload speed, so I dont think the speed is the problem.
I am hoping that someone here has experience with this problem as it has me baffled. The call entre suggests I leave the vision box and router switched off for an hour before reconnecting and to call back if that doesn't sort the problem (it didn't) I am reluctant to call back because the next person I speak to will just have me going through the same crib sheet again.
Mant thanks.

Quite seriously, the servers themself are really the least likely
culprit here. Everything points to a much more wdespread problem
affecting pretty much everything on the network. That could be the
network itself, or some machine that has crapped out and overloads the
net, something like that. NW65SP8 / BM3.9 is extremely stable, including
all included drivers.

  • VERY slow wireless speeds since Infinity 2 upgrade

I don't know whether it is just coincidence or not but ever since BT upgraded my Infinity Unlimited to Infinity 2, the wireless speeds on my home network have been ridiculously slow. With a wired connection I get about 55-65 Mbps download and 10-15Mbps upload typically, while on wireless it's a fraction of that. For instance, the last test I did gave 3.33Mbps download and 0.13Mbps upload! I have tried different routers, tried changing the wireless channels, tried turning off other wireless equipment in the house, all to no avail. The strange thing is, the wireless signal strength is showing good to excellent. The speeds I obtained when Infinity was first installed were typically around 20Mbps download and 7-8Mbps upload.
I have contacted BT India and they said they were going to run some tests today, but I can't imagine how they are going to diagnose this problem remotely. Has anyone any ideas about what could be causing this and how I can go about finding a solution?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I am rather hoping that an engineer will be able to confirm whether or not the wireless signal is being degraded by interference and if so, what might be the cause and/or the general direction it is coming from. I have carried out all the tests I can do on my own, such as changing channels, routers, etc and turning off any other electronic devices in my home that emit radio signals, but nothing has made a jot of difference. All I know is that until a couple of months or so I had a great wireless signal, but now I do not. I can't find the cause without the help of an expert (i.e., BT engineer) coming to check what is going on. If BT are only interested in providing a good signal by ethernet cable, then they shouldn't be adverting on the TV how great their HH3 is at distributing a wireless signal around the home if it only works like that some of the time or for some people.

  • Can't scan or connect to WPA network since kernel upgrade

    Hi guys,
I upgraded to kernel 2.6.29 earlier today and have been having trouble with scanning and connecting to WPA encrypted networks since. I'm stuck with a wired connection for the minute, but I can't have the wire going through the house for so long otherwise somebody will trip over it - probably me.
I usually use netcfg to connect to the network, but since the update that has failed.
My network called is a Belkin USB Wireless G, model number F5D705ed version 5000ed. It worked perfectly fine on 2.6.28 using the rtl8187 native drivers.
    dmesg output for 2.6.29

I can start the card up using
    sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
When I attempt to scan for a wireless network, I get
    sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
    wlan0 No scan results
The network is WPA, and would scan fine on 2.6.28.
    wpa_supplicant.conf looks like this

I should note though, that since the update - /var/run/wpa_supplicant seems to have disappeared.

I've made some progress though - but still can't connect. I can now scan for a network though.
    /etc/conf.d/wireless-regdom

/var/run/wpa_supplicant still didn't exist, so I created a /var/run/wpa_supplicant folder - and saw a few success messages in the log. This allowed me to bring the card up again and scan for a network.
At this point, I was getting excited until netcfg2 still kept telling me that it couldn't associate with the network.
    I installed wicd and gave that a go and got the following. I did a 'tail -f /var/log/wicd/wicd.log' and got this;

  • HPC8180 Printer wont connect to wireless network, after firmware upgrade to Wireless Router

My HPC8180 has been connecting wirelessly since I bought it sometime ago.  I recently had to upgrade the firmware on my Netcom NB9W wireless router and since then my HP wont resolve to the wireless network.
I run the Wireless Network wizzard on the printer, select the correct SSID and enter the WEP key as per instructions.
    It then will not connect.
The summary I print out says it passes everything except:
    No Filtering = Fail
    Connected = Not Run
Signal Strength = Very Low (which is strange because it's about 10ft from Wireless Router).
Other networks detected matching your network name (SSID) = No
    Summary says:
    Network Name (SSID) altnet (correct)
    IP Address = Not applicable
    Configuration Source = Not applicable
    Communication Mode = Infrastructure
    Authentication Type = Open System
    Encryption = 64-bit WEP
I have NOT turned on mac address filtering
    Any ideas??
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Your router appears to be a DSL modem router.  Those can be tricky to connect to.  Also, WEP can be problematic and is no longer a good security measure.  WEP can be broken in about 10 minutes with freeware from the internet.
    Let's do three things:
    1. Change to WPA or WPA2 encryption.  You can make up your own password.  Make it 13 or more characters, numbers and letters, upper and lower case.
    2. Reset the Network Defaults in your printer (Setup > Network area).
    3. Attach to the router in this way:
Sometimes DSL providers have more control over the router than the printer likes.
    - Unplug the telephone line from the router
    - Turn the power off on the router, wait 30 seconds, then turn the power back on.
    - Go through the normal process of connecting the printer to the device (Wireless Setup WIzard)
    - Now find the IP address of the printer (it should be on the self-test printout), type it into a browser.
    - On that screen you will find a Networking Tab, then on the left Wireless, then the IPv4 Tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you know what that is, set an IP outside that range but no higher than 254 (the last number in the address).
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Leave the gateway and DNS blank
    - Finally, plug in the phone line, reboot the router and test.

  • Windows Vista = very slow wireless network

I have a brand new Lenovo ThinkPad Z61p. A great machine, great performance. But Vista seems to get in its way.
The first thing I did, was to re-install Windows Vista to get a clean machine, without alle the junk that comes with it. At work, the wireless network worked just fine - but when I came home, it was so slow. I mean REALLY slow. If I turned the wireless network card off, and plugged in a cable, I was flying on the Internet. But for the wireless adapter, even a page like msdn.microsoft.com could take 3-4 minutes just to load.
I thought the issue was the drivers for the wireless network adapter, but later, in my desperate attempt to solve the problem, I removed a Windows feature called Windows DFS Replication service, which solved my problem.
This was 4 weeks ago - and now the problem has returned. I've been reading a lot of forum posts around the web. I've uninstalled some other features, disabled IPv6, disabled Vista Auto-tuning ( i did that 4 weeks ago as well)...
Nothing is working. I've also changed the default Network authentication mode, I've updated the drivers for the Intel Pro Wireless 3945abg, changed the wireless mode and a lot of things. Nothing is working.
Does anyone in here have the same issues, or does anyone know what is wrong?

I picked up a new IBM ThinkPad T60P (Wide) running Vista Business, and I am experiencing the same problems with an extremely slow wireless connection. I get the same slow performance on the wireless network in my office as in my home.
The second I disable the wireless and plug in the cable directly to the router (ZyXeL) everything runs perfectly. I also tested connecting an Apple AirPort to the router (via cable) and connected directly to the AirPort as an access point instead of connecting to my normal wireless network, and then everything was working just fine for some reason (almost as fast as when I connect directly to the router via cable)!
The really weird thing is that I get really quick download rates on at least one website (www.dailyrush.dk) where I can download files at 1.1 MB/s (I should have 15 mbit downstream). The web pages of that website still load pretty slow though when I'm browsing. Most other websites that I have tested load insanely slowly, both when I'm just browsing the pages and when I'm downloading files. For example a 1024 x 695 pixel JPG on Flickr.com might take several minutes to load, or simply time out. The Google front page sometimes takes 15 seconds to load.
I have my old laptop parked right besides the new one, both connected to the same router on wireless, and the old laptop (IBM ThinkPad T41 running XP) performs fine - downloading anywhere from 10 to 100 times faster!
It also takes forever to connect to VPN, perhaps 15 or 20 seconds on the Vista laptop and no more than 2 seconds on the XP machine.
When I ping www.google.com in a command prompt I get some packet loss (between 25 and 100 %) but reasonable ping times averaging about 45ms which is the same as on my old laptop.
I have tried pretty much everything:
    Disabling Windows Firewall
Disabling TCP/IP v6 and those other entries in the wireless adapter configuration that are new in Vista
Disabling security on the router entirely
Changing security on the router to WPA and WPA2
Changing the channel on the router (tried several available channels)
Switching between 802.11 a/b/g modes on the router
Booting up in safe mode (heard that worked for someone with a similar problem)
Updating the wireless adapter driver to the newest version
Installing all available updates from Windows Update
Moving my laptop really close to the router (duh)
    Uninstalling MacAfee
    Uninstalling Bullguard
Uninstalling a bunch of pre-installed IBM stuff
I have come across several threads online where people have had the exact same problem and solved it by uninstalling the pre-installed MacAfee software. My laptop came with MacAfee too but I uninstalled it right away and installed Bullguard instead. When I noticed the connection problems I uninstalled Bullguard too, but little did it help.
I really hope that someone can help me out here ... I'm kind of running out of ideas :-( Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,
    Stefan

  • Lost 5 GHz wireless network access after upgrading to Windows 10

Hello, Lost the ability to connect to (and see) my 5GHz wireless network after upgrading Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 on my Yoga 2 13. I have tried to update the wireless driver to the latest version. The WiFi card is the original Wireless-N 7260 that was installed when I bought the computer. I know for a fact that I was able to use 5GHz networks Before as I can see my saved networks and I can clearly see that I have my 5GHz network in that list. Please advice, Patrik

Good to see it fixed itself. One setting that can block Windows 10 from seeing the WD My Cloud and other devices/computers on the network is the "network location type". During the upgrade or install to Windows 10 one may not quite understand what they are reading when, or if, asked which kind of network they are connecting to. If they select "no" on that particular screen (example below), Windows 10 will block access to certain local devices possibly including the WD My Cloud. The following link gives a general overview of the issue and ways to fix it if one made the wrong selection: Change network location type (Public or Private) in Windows 10

  • Help, can't access wireless networks since upgrade. Wireless network button won't slide to on

Wireless access button not sliding to on. Overseas can't use date network, would cost a fortune.

    Hi there Jlhush,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.

  • SLOW and frustrating since the upgrade

Here is from the words of the front line school tech:
Teachers can get logged in to novell and work on internet then find that
when they go to another site they are timed out OR while on that site be
logged out. May be in a website and it freeze up to the point the computer must be restarted on a hard boot and then cannot get logged back in to Novell OR maybe they can.
Email freezes when you try to go to a New email - we use Novell
GroupWise WebAccess. Sometimes freezes when opening an email and times
    out.
When you open an email and then click the X to close it, and move the
mouse, the name of the sender is caught on the mouse and is drug around
the page. Must open the email again and close it again and NOT move the
mouse for approx 30 seconds or more and then the senders name will not
    stay on mouse.
Internet running extreamly slow. At High school we are running on a new
4.5 Mb IMA circuit. Elementary buildings are running on Integrated wireless.
BorderManager prevents from looking at pages and freezes up and must be
    restarted at the server.
Networked printers are losing their IP address and must be reconfigured.
Some print jobs remain out there in cyber space and prints 10, 15
minutes later after being sent or maybe the next day if at all.
The recent upgrade caused this to happen. NW65sp8 and BM 3.9sp2 were updated last week and since then, all this has started happening. It's been a few years since I have worked on Bordermanager but I can remember issues like this before. I have been tasked to fix this issue. I am trying to put together a list of what to take with me.
A spare NIC card or 2?
    updated LAN driver?
    updated TCP files?
It's already running the latest proxy.cfg file version 30.
Since I am leaving in the morning, anyone have a quick thought on what it could be?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • Slow Wireless Internet Since 10.5.5 Update

    Hi.
When I click any link or enter any URL in Firefox, the status indicates "Looking up (URL)..." for literally 5-10 seconds before loading the web page. This happens on all browsers (including Safari, FireFox 3, Camino, and Opera) and has started since the 10.5.5 update. I've tried it on my college's network and it does the same thing. Running Windows via Boot Camp does not suffer the same problem. I have many other computers and devices on the same network that do not experience this problem, thereby eliminating anything other than the Mac OS at fault.
What the heck did 10.5.5 do? Is there a fix for this other than running a restore with Time Machine and going back to 10.5.4 (which IMO is super stable and problem-free)?

Weird problem here too. I've had wireless problems of all kinds since Leopard. Then with 10.5.3, 10.5.4 things settled and worked fine. Now this!! Ahhhhh! I have full wireless signal, email is slow but works. But browsing is very slow. Funny thing: not to every site. There are some I used to visit which are now almost unreachable; they start to load, then they fall asleep with the browser saying "connecting to...". Once every 10 or 20 refreshes then succeeds in loading the page. But clicking the next link from there the problem is back. Definitely after 10.5.5. No other changes of any kind. Not a DNS problem, at least not directly: nslookup looks good, tracing routes is ok also (14 hops away). Connection to other machines in the lan ok. Connections from ethernet linked machines (and also from the iphone) to the internet no problem.
I'm looking for a way to go back to 10.5.4!!
P.S. By now I'm almost sure this is a hardware issue, some sort of incompatibility at a hardware level, which apple is aware of (but can obviously not admit) and at some time decided to patch somehow - using some sort of software hack...but then forgets about it at the following update, so here we go.

  • Cannot connect to the iTunes Store from my home network since I upgraded to ios 6

I own an iPad 2 and recently upgraded to ios 6. Since then, I cannot connect to the iTunes store from my home network.  I can navigate any other site and access any other application.  I can even reach the iTunes store through My Personal Hotspot and through my office network.
Has anyone experienced something similar?  My network carrier is Telmex and I know for sure, they block port 25.  Any guess on whether there could be a setting impeding connection?
    Help!!!

    Hi Nickey,
If you are having difficulty connecting to the iTunes store from your PC there are a number of things you can try to get connected again. Details are available in this article -
Can't connect to the iTunes Store

I see you have already checked to make sure your system and other software is up to date, but there are plenty of ways to continue from there.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Slow wireless connection since OSX 10.4.8 update

I have a Powerbook (non-Intel) and a Netgear connection. Since the 10.4.8 update, my Internet connection is horribly slow or pages never load or Safari/Firefox says 'not connected to the Internet' even though I've got a full signal and I'm sitting directly in front of the modem. Another computer in the house (non-Mac) has no issues with Internet. I've made no other changes to my laptop, period, so it has to be the update.
I already searched the Discussions board for a fix and found nothing. Anyone have any suggestions? Should I reinstall an older version of 10.4 that worked just fine? I telecommute for work and need fast access so this can't go on.
Mucho thanks for any advice that anyone can give me, Kat

    Hi Kat,
I've read several, (hundreds?), of these complaints, trouble is there are many different reasons... I'll name a few to start us off...
Using Delta Updates rather than Combo updates.
Certain Broadcom Chipset based Modems/Routers might work fine for months, but then won't with Macs. Many varied symptoms including yours.
Trashing these files and rebooting and setting up Network Prefs again...
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
    /Users/nnnnLibrary/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist
Geez, there's too many to name off, but...
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, boot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
If it doesn't fix the problem

  • EXTREMELY SLOW WIRELESS NETWORK SPEED !!!

    Hi,
I have an AirPort EXTREME conected to internet and an AirPort EXPRESS which I use as a range extender with WDS. My broadband speed is (unfortunatelly) never better than 2.7 Mb/s. I have noticed that my EXPRESS station is working at 54 Mb/s transmit rate while my EXTREME is always between 5 Mb/s and 25 Mb/s, most frequently between 8 and 10 Mb/s. I tried using only the EXTREME station for better monitoring of the traffic and I found that it works even slower, somewhere around 2 Mb/s. I use WPA2 coding and a fixed channel transmission (stand-alone or in WDS).
Is there any reason why transmit rate would drop so significantly? Is there a way to force a higher rate? My transmit rates are low very irrespective of whether I am somewher in the house behind wals or right next to the antena... The internet download time is slow even for just internet pages while downloading any file is quite slow and the connection to my wireless printer/scanner is greatly affected.
    Please help !
    Many thanks,
    Igor

Just to add some of my experiences to the debate.
I use a late-2008 TC and connect it wirelessly to an ISP supplied modem/router and a late-2008 iMac. Because of limitations with the modem/router, I had to use 802.11n at 2.5 GHz. The internet connection is via the modem/router and internet usage from the iMac is fine in all circumstances (it does not go via the TC).
Performance was pretty good with 7.3.2 but when I originally tried to upgrade to 7.4.1, TC backup became very slow and pretty unreliable. In my case, restarting the router got things going again but TC usage was always a pain. So, I reverted to 7.3.2 and ran beautifully for several months.
Then I tried 7.4.2 when it came out and my regular hourly backups became very slow, typically taking 70-80 minutes rather than 2-3 minutes. However, in contrast to 7.4.1, the connection to the TC was very reliable if slow, somewhat different to my experience with 7.4.1.
Switching back to 7.3.2 and TC was back to normal.
Being curious and having time, I decided to try changing things and see what happens. First tried dropping the wireless to use 802.11g. Result with 7.4.2 was excellent - probably a little faster than 7.3.2 with 802.11n. Tried 7.3.2 with 802.11g and that was as good as 7.4.2 with 802.11g.
Then tried letting the modem/router select the wireless channel and 7.4.2 with 802.11n became a lot better but remained at least twice as slow as 7.4.2 with 802.11g (but not 30 times worse).
So, what do I conclude from that? Not exactly sure but there would appear to be something amiss with the 802.11n support on the 2.5 GHz band for the "old" single band TC when using 7.4.2. Perhaps it is more susceptible to interference or something but when faced with identical circumstances (just switching the firmware level, no other change), it is definitely worse to very much worse.
For now I am happy with 802.11g and 7.4.2.

  • IPad is extremely slow and hangs since IOS8 upgrade

Since the IOS8 upgrade my iPad2 is extremely slow, the touch sensitivity seems diminished (along with the keyboard being slower also), many apps no longer work. Can't risk trying to backup to IOS7.x because i am afraid the original IOS7 backup may be gone. I told my wife and daughter DO NOT UPGRADE, so they are still working fine.  Apple Support, where are you?  Maybe all is well for the new phones but you have forgotten other users.
i believe my loyalty to Apple (since 1984) is fading as I am now slowly recovering all my data so I can move away from Apple.

Try a reset by holding the power and home keys down until the Apple logo appears.
FWIW my iPad 2 is running just fine under iOS 8.
By the way, you cannot retreat to iOS 7 - that is not supported.

  • IPAD1 and home computer loses wireless connection since i upgrade to 5.1.1.

I have an iPAD 1.  Can't complain as it was given to me.
I have a Dell home computer (not an Apple) and I have a Linkys wireless router.  (I don't always know the right computer lingo, so I apologize upfront).
I only use the Wireless on my iPAD.  Its a 32G with 3G but don't use a plan only the wireless.
All has been going great for the last 2 months.  Loving it.
Well...until last night and I got a pop-up on my iPad that asked to download to IOS 5.1.1. So, I did and it all went well.
For about an hour.  Then I could get a connection.
So, here's where my problems started.  I got on my home computer to start looking for advice and my home computer wasn't working too.  So, I got out my trusty Blackberry (it's provided from my employer) so I search on there.  It said to disconnect the router.  It also said on the IPAD to reset network.  So, I did both and both iPAD and home computer got back the connectivity.
I checked my AOL and Facebook on my iPAD this morning for a couple of hours.  Alll was good.
Then this afternoon, I was connected then wasn't.  So I got on my home computer and it lost wireless too.
I've been messing about research trying to figure out what I did wrong and it seems like there are some bugs in 5.1.1.
I thought maybe I could downgrade but it looked a little tricky.
Can anyone out there tell me what to do?
P.S.  I don't download iTunes but I would like in the future maybe to watch a movie on the iPAD and I download books and I'm trying to figure out how to sync with my Kindle Touch.
So many things for a senior citizen to be trying to figure out. (ha!)

Look at iOS Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
iPad: Issues connecting to Wi-Fi networks  http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3304
iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4199
    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • My ipod 4 touch will not connect to my home wifi network since I upgraded to iOS 6

When I go into Utilities/WiFi on I see name of my home network. When I tap on it it asks for password. After I type in password/join, I get message "Unable to join the Ntwork ".....". I've tried the fixes suggested through a Google search to no avail. Any Ideas?

    Did you try?
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router.
    - Reset networks settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
