Slow wireless printing on HP Photosmart C4780

I am using the following hardware:
HP Photosmart C4780
Macbook Pro OS 10.6.7
iMac OS 10.6.7
Linksys E2000 router (previously Netgear router)
When using the C4780 driver the wireless printing from both Mac computers is very slow and often won't finish on large jobs.  This was so frustrating that I went to using a long USB cable to print which worked just great.  I finally got fed up and went from an old Netgear router (802.11 b) to a new Linksys E2000 router.  The problem remained.
I read through the forums on this site and found that several people had success by using older HP Photosmart drivers.  I started with the HP P1100 driver and that worked great but color printing was poor quality.  I then read further that people had better luck with the HP Photosmart 2700 series driver.  I have switched both computers to this driver and things seem to work OK.  Printing is normal speed and I may be imagining things but I think the scanner capability hooks up quicker also.
Someone at HP thought it might be a router problem.  How could that be?  I am on the 2nd router from a different company and fixed the problem by changing the driver only.
Here is my question:
Does HP have any plans to fix their HP Photosmart C4780 driver to work properly with OS X?  Given that I bought my printer with my Mac from the Apple online store I would think this is a priority but it has been months and no solution has showed up on any of the forums I have found.  Any help would be great.
Thanks!

OK, first are you positive that the HP software you loaded on your Mac is compatible with 10.6?  That is a common mistake that has special, non-obvious ways to correct.
You could try to set a static IP address if the software is not an issue.
Please advise on the software and we will go from there.

  • Extremely slow wireless printing with HP Photosmart Premium C309g-m

I'm seeing extremely slow print speeds when printing wirelessly from a Mac or a Windows XP system to a new HP Photosmart Premium C309g-m printer. The printer begins printing immediately when I request a print, but it only prints one line. It will then take about 15 minutes to print the rest of the page, printing each line after a very long pause. Demo page printing doesn't exhibit this problem, only documents from programs like Word 2008, Safari and Firefox (tried firefox on PC and Mac) are affected.
If I connect to the printer through a USB connection it prints fine, so this problem appears to be with wireless printing only.
    Printer: HP Photosmart Premium C309g-m
Computer: Mac mini (Late 2009 model) (also tried a Windows XP laptop as a comparison, using latest drivers from HP's website)
OS: Mac OS X 10.6.2 with all available updates installed
Computer connection method: Wired Ethernet connection to wireless router
Printer drivers: version 2.2.1 (Apple supplied, HP drivers never installed as system shipped with 10.6)
Wireless router: Apple TimeCapsule (Early 2009) 1TB, running in a/n and b/g modes on 2.4 and 5GHz. TimeCapsule is in bridging mode as the DSL modem handles DHCP service
Encryption: WPA2 Personal, no MAC filtering or hiding of the SSID.
IP addressing scheme: All addresses are handed out by DHCP server with no reservations of any kind
The TimeCapsule is sitting three inches from the printer and the printer indicates full signal. Connection of the printer to the wireless network and setup of the printer on the Mac went without a hitch. Only when printing a test document did we discover the problem. The wireless network is behaving as expected when accessing the Internet from both Mac and Windows devices (tested with a Dell laptop running XP and a MacBook running OS X 10.6.2), so I don't see any overall problems with the wireless network.
    Attempted remedies:
    1. Rebooting and powering off, waiting, powering on computer
    2. Resetting the print subsystem, turning the printer off and on again and reinstalling the printer
    3. Unplugging power from the printer and letting it sit for several minutes before trying to print wirelessly.
    None of these worked.
    This question was solved.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the DSL modem HW.  There might be an issue with how print data is being routed though.
Please try the second experiment where you blank-out the default gateway and DNS entries from the printer's internal web configuration page.  Open the printer's internal web page by browsing to its IP address.  Select Networking and then Wireless (802.11).  Under the IPv4 Configuration tab, select Manual IP:
For Manual IP Address, use the existing printer IP address.
For Manual Subnet Mask, use 255.255.255.0
For Manual Default Gateway, leave blank.  This is important.
    Select Manual DNS Server:
Leave both the Manual Preferred DNS Server and Manual Alternate DNS Server fields empty.  This is important.
    Press Apply.
Turn off the DSL modem, the printer and all computers connected to your network.  Wait 60 seconds then turn on the DSL modem and then turn on the printer.  Then turn on the computers.  See if this corrects the printing speed.

  • Wireless printing from HP Photosmart C4780

I changed routers last week and can't get printer to print wirelessly.  How do I set it up.  (It prints while wired).

First, on the front panel of the printer: Setup > Network > Reset Network Defaults.
Now, run the HP software to "Add a Device".

  • Cannot do wireless printing to HP Photosmart C7180 since upgrading to Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit

I recently upgraded one of my new HP p6150t Pavillion PCs from Vista Home Premium 64-bit to Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.  Since then I have not been able to print to my networked printer, an HP Photosmart C7180 All-in-One, which is wireless on my home network. When this PC was Vista, I was able to print. Two other PCs on my home network, both running XP, can access the printer across the network and print.  This PC now running Windows 7 64-bit can find the networked printer when I "Add-a-printer", and I am able to finish the installation of the printer.
I downloaded and installed new drivers for the HP C7180 from the HP website specifically for Windows 7 64-bit, so I have the latest drivers. (The version of the drivers is 13.1.0, date is 10-2009. From the same HP printer driver download site, I also installed " HP Print Software Patch When Upgrading Vista to Windows 7".
I do not want to install the printer as a shared device on any of the other PCs, but rather want to be able to print from any of them, direct wirelessly, even if the other PCs are offline.  And I was able to do this when I used Vista...
If I open and leave visible the print queue for the printer, and then print a Test Page, I see the print job briefly shown as "Spooling" and then as "Printing" in the print queue display, but nothing ever reachs the printer. There are no error messages, either during the process of Adding the Printer, or when sending Test Pages, or other print jobs to the printer.
I have McAfee antivirus and Firewall installed on all of my PCs. The Firewall advanced setting for Networks shows that the IP address range for all of my IPs are trusted.
[Although I just bought this PC from hp.com only 4 months ago, as part of a package of 2 PCs, a MediaSmart server, big hdtv monitor, and all with 4 year extended support agreements, HP provides "NO" support for network printing. That was what a support specialist called to tell me after I sent an email to the HP CEO.  HP PCs, HP printer, HP provided upgrade kit for Windows 7, but if you want to actually print from your HP PC to your HP printer, there is "NO" support.  (I worked for HP for ten years, but it is clearly a different company now.)  So, if anyone in the Community can assist, I would very much appreciate it.]

I have a year old Epson and an HP.. I upgraded to a win 7 64 bit and doing some sharing/networking.. Got some 32 bit XPand two win 7 64 bit..   The Epson ,shares and connects up  with no issues.. the HP is just a fiasco...   No more HP for me ...

  • Slow wireless printing with Airport Express

I have a Canon MP530 printer hooked up to an Airport Express for wireless printing. My wireless internet network is through an Airport Extreme. The only thing hooked into the Express is the printer, and it works but is extremely slow. It can take an hour to print one 15 page document. Any ideas how to fix this?

I'm not sure I understand your question, or at least I don't know how to tell connection speed with the utility. The express is set up as an extension to my current wireless network, although I'm only using it for printing.
I had a similar experience with a hard drive wirelessly connected to the Extreme - data transfer was ridiculously slow. Is this something to be expected with wireless connectivity?

  • Officejet 6500 e709n - slow wireless print & garbage then Bonjour works perfect - fix please!

Hello all!  My wife recently purchased a Officejet 6500 e709n so we could finally have a wifeless printer in the house. Well, we set it up fine but we quickly ran into some printing issues. It seems that when we try to wirelessly print any file larger than 300k, the data transfer hangs and causes a long wait time until the printing finishes (if it finishes). Also this causes garbled printing.
Try as I might I could not find a fix anywhere. I tried reinstalling / updating / resetting my firewall and anti-virus and nothing.
Tonight I installed Bonjour and OMG it works - no issues at all. This leads me to think that the issue is in the HP driver or settings or something. Now my question is, how do I get the regular driver to work?!
She runs a Gateway Netbook (windows 7 Starter) and I run an Dell Studio 1747 (windows 7 home premium 64)
Install went clean on both machines

This may be a router issue.  What brand/model router?

  • Wireless printing for HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-One

Receiving error message when attempting to print via wireless network.  Problem started with installation of a replacement wireless modem & router. Previously had successufully printed through  wireless netwrok for a few years.  I completed the Wireless setup to the new wireless network name and printed the test report which states successful setup of your wreless printer. What are your recommendations for me to successfully printed to the C7280 wirelessly?

Hello ,Welcome to the HP Forums I understand you're facing wireless printing issues since connecting a new modem/router. I would suggest running the Print and Scan Doctor. This diagnostic tool will check for any conflicts that could be causing the issue. The tool will show you a report at the end. If there was a problem that the tool could not fix, you will notice it in the results. Please try printing afterwards to see if the tool fixed the issue. If you noticing any errors in the tools results, let me know what they said please! Good luck!If you wish to thank me for my response lending a helping hand, click the  below!

  • Slow wireless printing?

I have a new HP officejet 8600. When I print wirelessly with my MacBook Air it does so quickly, but my Mac book is slow.  Why?

I've seen this before with Mac's and wireless H-P printers.  One suggestion that has worked in the past is to change the printer driver to one of the older drivers that are available in the base Mac OS.
Go to System Preferences then access the Print & Fax applet.  Press the + button to add a printer and you should be presented with a list of all the printers on your network.  Select the C4780 / Bonjour and for "Print Using" select  the HP Photosmart P1100 - Gutenprint v5.1.3 and press "Add".
Let me know if this works.

  • Wireless Printing Problems - HP Photosmart Premium Web C309n

I hoping someone can help me with some printing issues I am currently having with my C309n.
When trying to print via my web browser (Firefox 3.5.7), the printer stalls while trying to respond, and when it does begin to print, it moves incredibly slow. I had the same problem when I first set up the machine when trying to print photos, but that issue seems to have resolved itself (I did nothing in particular; one day it just worked). I have no problem printing from programs such as Word, PowerPoint, etc.
The web printing issue still remains and I was hoping that someone could confirm that I have used the optimal wireless/set up settings before I start changing things in an attempt to solve my current problem. Also, of course, if anyone is aware of a quick fix for my printing issue, I would appreciate it.
Printer: HP Photosmart Premium Web - C309n
Computer OS: Windows 7 x64 Professional
    Anti-Virus: Norton 360 Premier
    Connection: Wireless
    Type: Automatic DHCP
    Port: 9100
Router: Linksys Wireless-N Gigabit Router (WRT310N)
    Firmware: v1.001
Settings of Router are as follows:
    - Network Mode: Mixed (a, b, g, n)
    - Security: WPA2 Personal
    - Encryption: AES
    - Radio Band/Wide Channel/Standard Channel: Auto
Also, I apologize if I provided too much info; just wanted to make sure I covered everything. Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm also having slow print issues on the HP Photosmart Prem-Web C309n-s.
The issue happens in multiple applications, such as printing a photo from HP Photosmart Essentials 3.5, printing an email from Internet Explorer 8, etc.  I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit with Service Pack 2.
Also, noteable is that it happens on 2 PCs.  Same model purchased at the same time.  The issue seems intermittant and it seems to affect my wife's PC more than mine.  It may just be that she prints more???
I did not think it was a networking issue, but both my PC and printer are wireless.  I will direct my PC and see if the issue goes away.
My wife prints all her own photos and scrapbooks.  She is extremely frustrated and wants it out of the house.  I'm going to contact HP Support tonight.  If they cannot fix it in a reasonable time, I'm going to try and return it.
It also seems to rip through XL ink cartridges faster than any HP printer we have had.
    Best regards.

  • Wireless printing from HP Photosmart 6520

I'm trying to set up my new HP Photosmart 6520 printer to print wireless.  I have the Wireless Direct turned on. The trouble happens when I go to the wireless radio and click on the name of the printer. I get an exclamation point in the middle of the radio waves that show connection to the Internet.  For some reason, it isn't connecting to the printer. Any suggestions?

    Hi @Karobn
I understand you have the Wireless Direct on, but I am a little confused about the exclamation point in the middle of the radio waves that show connection to the Internet. Are you trying to connect the computer to the printers Wireless Direct network, or are you trying to put your printer on your home network, have the computer on the same home network and thus be able to print wirelessly and have internet access?
    If you are trying to get the printer on your existing network, follow the steps below;
On the control panel, touch the Wireless icon ().
    Touch Settings.
    Touch Wireless Setup Wizard.
The Wireless Setup Wizard searches for networks, and then displays them in a list.
Touch the name of your network.
NOTE:The printer wireless setup wizard provides instructions to configure the wireless connection. Follow the instructions on the printer control panel, or continue with the following steps.
    - Source: Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection

  • Can't restore wireless printing to my Photosmart 3310; "cannot be contacted over network"

Previously I could print wirelessly, and now I can't.
Control panel shows items in queue, printing, then unspecified "error."
No recent power outages, changes (except the New Year), and my laptop still has Internet wirelessly.
I can't print a Test Page via laptop, and I've tried lots of fixes to no avail.  [i.e. System restore.  Unplugging laptop, printer, router.  HP Print & Scan Dr.  Replaced ink cartridges.  Printed a Network Config Page which identifies no issues that I can discern; shows "connected."  Turned off Firewall & tried to print; no luck.   Windows Updater is up-to-date and apparently so are drivers.  Tried changing last digits of IP addresses of Port, Printer & Laptop so they'd match, but that didn't work.]  However, running my Control Panel's Troubleshooter, it reports "Problems found:  Printer HP Photosmart 3300 series cannot be contacted over the network."
I used the printer's "HP Wireless Setup Wizard" to reestablish a network connection, and success was reported -- says connected to network.  But I still can't print wirelessly.
Incidentally, today I discovered I can send a Fax but cannot receive one.  Relevant?  Advice welcomed!

    Hello DeanJean,
Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand your concerns. Please verify your operating system on your computer. Click here to find out: Windows.
Since the Print Queue is stating a unspecified "error", I will suggest following this YouTube video on Restarting the Print Spooler. Please restart the computer after performing this step.
Next, try adding a new Port:
    1) Go into Devices and Printers on your computer
    2) Right click on your printer
    3) Select printer properties
    4) Select ports tab at the very top
    5) Click on add a port, select Standard TCP/IP port, then select new port
    6) Type in your IP address from your printer, click next, then finish
    7) Click apply, then OK
    8) Try to Print a document
If these steps don't resolve your issue, then please try a USB cord to test the connection.
Please follow this HP document on Troubleshooting Fax Transmission and Reception Issues. This document will provide troubleshooting steps to fix why you are unable to receive a fax.
Let me know if these documents don't resolve your issue, as I will assist you further.

  • Wireless printing via HP Photosmart Plus B209

    Hey all,
Thanks for your help in advance. I am using an HP Photosmart Plus B209 series all in-one printer. The opperating systems in use are Windows 7 (64-bit) With my Dell laptop I am unable to use this printer as the default and print wirelessly. I can, however, print wirelessly via my Acer laptop with no problems. The error that shows up with the Dell laptop is that there is an error in the printing network. The printer is visible  though through the internet on that computer. Here is another dosey for ya. I AM able to print from the Dell laptop using the printer through the shared network with the Acer computer. This is okay however a hassel to have to have to laptops on just to print wirelessly from the Dell laptop. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the servers from the HP web site a couple of times and nothing yet. I have also tried the various updates and no positive outcomes have occured. If anyone has any suggestions or knows exactly what I need to do that would be great!! Thanks again.

  • Extremely slow printing with hp photosmart d110

Recently, I've had extremely slow wireless printing from my laptop to our HP Photosmart D110 series printer.  The printer is part of our wireless network and is used by my business laptop and our home laptop.  When I send a simple Excel spreadsheet to print, the printer screen says, "Printing", the on/off light flashes and it looks like it's printing.  But it takes 1-2 minutes for the document to finally print.  This problem does not occur when we print from the home laptop; things print instantly.  No updates or system changes before this problem started.

1-2 minutes! Try 10-15 minutes on my Photosmart. These things are junk. I have discussed my many issues with phone support 10-12 times in the last six months with no progress.

  • Photosmart C4780 install fails at "system cannot find specified file"

My problem started simply with the printer, an HP Photosmart C4780 which has always had a wireless connection and would not print.  At first, the network connection checked out fine from the printer control panel.  I ran a Microsoft printer troubleshooter, which found a block in the print queue, and cleared it.  The first test page would not print, but the "inner test page" did print.  I didn't understand whatever that meant, so I looked for help from the HP site.
I ran the HP Print and Scan Doctor, and it suggested I reinstall the driver.  I downloaded and saved the current one from HP (PS_AIO_06_C4700_USW_Full_Win_enu_140_175.exe) and then uninstalled the existing driver.  When I attempted to install the new one, a window popped up saying, "The system cannot find the specified file," with only one box to click which said simply "OK".  The installation went through to "review installation options", after which came “checking updates, downloading updates, installing updates” and then it was while “checking system” that the “cannot find the file” window popped up, and when I clicked “OK”, the installation window as well as the error message box, just disappeared.  What I assume was the file path was in the frame of the window, but the whole thing didn't fit so it didn't show the end.  What I could read was “C:\Users\ … \Local\Temp\7zS588E\Setup\.\Setup\hpzpnp40 …
I found one topic on the same problem for the same model printer in the forum, which offered this fix:
You will need to first complete a level 3 uninstall of the software. I have included the steps below for this.
    1. Press the Windows key, and the letter R
    2. Type %temp%, and click OK
    3. Open the 7z folder (most recent one if there are multiples)
    4. Open the util folder
    5. Open the ccc folder
    6. Double click on the Uninstall_L3
Once the Uninstall_L3 has completed, please delete all items listed in the temp folder. Note, you will  not be able to to delete all items, please skip the ones that you cannot. Next please empty the trash, and perform a clean boot. I have included the document 'How to perform a clean boot in Windows'. If your computer does not request it, please restart your computer.
Once your computer is back up, you will need to reinstall the printers software. You can either do this by using the Installation CD, or downloading the software.
I did what was suggested, until it got to the point where it said it did not recommend removing any further items if I intended on using the HP Officejet printer (yes I have a second HP printer attached to the network) anytime in the future.  Not really understanding how this all works, I decided to stop what I was doing, so unfortunately it did not solve my problem.
Do I need to uninstall both HP printers before I can reinstall one?  And if I do that, is there any reason I would not be able to reinstall both printers?  Sounds like I'm asking for trouble.  Bottom line... I still cannot install the driver.
I have tried to install both the full and basic versions of the driver and always get the same result.
I have an HP Pavilion dv6-3100t notebook, running Windows 7 Home Premium, version 6.1.7601 service pack 1, 64 bit.  I haven't installed any new hardware or software.  This printer has always had a wireless connection.  The router I use is a Netgear 54 Mbps WGR614 v6 (supplied by my cable company), and the network includes not only my notebook and the Photosmart printer, but also an ASUS desktop, another HP printer, an Officejet 6300 series (used only for printing graphics and photos with a wired connection to the router), and a Vizio smart-TV.  I use Norton 360 Premier Edition and disabled the anti-virus auto-protect when I downloaded and attempted to install the driver.
Please help!  And thanks in advance for your time and attention.

  • Photosmart C4780 won't work with new Time Capsule

All of our household machines (2 MacBooks and 1 iMac) worked just fine to print wirelessly to our HP Photosmart C4780 with our time capsule, 1TB. The hard drive on that failed, and we replaced it with a new 2 TB model. Everything runs fine off the new wireless network except for the printer. The printer is not hooked to the Time Capsule, and I don't want it to be as it's in an odd location. The printer worked just fine before, off by itself in a corner, not hooked to any computers or Time Capsule. We are running OS 10.8 on 2 machines and OS 10.6 on another. I've read every troubleshooting article and community post I can find, trying everything, and no luck. I've restarted everything. I've reset the printer network settings. I've deleted all printers from the computers, but in every case, the printer cannot be detected on the wireless network. I run the Print & Scan utility in System Preferences, and the printer is not located. I run the HP Setup Assistant, and it can't find the printer. If I hook it up via USB to any machine it works fine, and I even tried running the HP Setup Assistant to setup wireless via USB, and that can't find the wireless network either. The Time Capsule is on all default settings, exept I changed the name and  password. Neither has any special characters. I tried the suggestion of channel 11 and that didn't work. I printed out the wireless network test report, and the Network Name (SSID) Found diagnostic failed. I printed out the HP Network Configuration Page and it says network Offline, URL for embedded web server is http://0.0.0.0, and the 802.11 Wireless status is Disconnected. At the bottom where it lists the Number of 802.11 networks discovered, my home wireless network is at the top of the list. I know wireless is enabled on my printer because I've disabled and enabled it, plus the blue light is on above the wireless icon.
I cannot think of anything else to try and I'm about to launch the printer out the window! Please help in any way.

You're close. After opening Airport Utility/TimeCapsule/Edit, look at the bar at the TOP of the page for Airport Utility, not at the top of the inset box. That Base Station drop down has the WP Printer option. I'm using 6.3.2. Try that.
