Slow wireless with Powerbook, but fine with iBook?!

I'm currently using a campus wireless net and my Powerbook G4 is really, really, slow but my newer iBook G4 is much faster. When plugged in with an ethernet cable, however, both are equally fast. Does anyone have any idea why this could be so, and how I could go about fixing it? I unfortunately have no details on the wireless net.
Cheers,
Dave
Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   also iBook G4 10.4.6

Do the
recpetion levels match? if they don't you will find
that the lower the reception the slower the speed.
Most wireless software, including the Airport
software, steps down the connection speed based on
the reception levels to ensure the stability of the
signal.
Thanks. That was exactly the problem. My Powerbook has worse reception than the iBook. Is this a know problem?
Cheers,
Dave

  • Logon really slow for XP computers but fine with Windows 7

    Hi,
We have 2 domain controllers (both running 2008 R2) and a few hundred computers on our domain.
Since the past 3 weeks, we've been experiencing really slow logins for computers with Windows XP (doesn't seem to affect the computers with win7). It happens once a week in the morning. If we reboot both DCs, problem goes away.
I've checked the logs and i don't see anything wrong. As far as i know, nothing special was done lately.
Since i can't reproduce the problem and the logs are clean, it's really hard to put the finger on the culprit.
I'd really appreciate some ideas or past experiences.
    Thank you

    Hi
If it happen after the user enter the credential, I would activate the gpsvc.log to monitor the winlogon. That log will show, with a timestamp, what is applied when the user login. Really usefull to find bloat GPO that take too much time to execute or such.
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click
    OK.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click
    Key.
Type Diagnostics, and then press ENTER.
Right-click the Diagnostics subkey, point to New, and then click
    DWORD Value.
Type GPSvcDebugLevel, and then press ENTER.
Right-click GPSvcDebugLevel, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 0x30002, and then click
    OK.
    Exit Registry Editor.
At a command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    gpupdate /force
View the Gpsvc.log file in the following folder:
    %windir%\debug\usermode
    Regards, Philippe
Do i activate it on the DC or the client computers?
    Thank you

  • Macbook pro 2010 slow wireless with motorola surfboard sb901

anyone using a motorola surfboard sb901? i recently purchased this cable modem / router combo (all in one) and seems like my internet has been lagging since. i've tried changing wireless channels, disable/changing wireless security settings, resetting them to factory, etc. no dice.
i brough my macbook pro to my friends house and the internet was blazing along.
pretty sure its a modem issue, but wondering if theres a setting that someone knows that works for them. thanks

i also have a macbook pro 13 inch that i nought inn oct. 2009 i didn't have problems with wireless internet and i was using a motorola surfboard modem and an old g rated link sys router. i now have upgraded my router and modem and my internet it is super slow. but the weird thing is it is only slow on the mac.( i also have a hp from 2007 with no problems with internet) i am now using n rated belkin router with dual channels. i tried changing the channels on the router but this also hasn't helped. im stuck and tried to download onyx but it told me it doesn't work with my operating system. (i have the newest one available) i am going to try changing back to the original router. i will post another post if this helps or not. thanks. if anyone has any advice, please send it to me,

  • Slow wireless with Snow Leopard

I've read many posts on the subject and tried most all the fixes, but nothing works and I need a work around.
    Here is a summary:
Macbook Pro to Time Machine base wireless, through Actiontec GT701 DSL modem. Latest updates and firmware for all. Tested with all firewalls off.
Had no speed problems before Snow Leopard.
Web pages intermittently load very slow. Will work fast for a few minutes, then very slow for a longer periods of time, then repeat.
Direct connect via Ethernet to Time Machine, no speed problem at any time.
On different wireless hot spots including at work, no problem.
Test of DSL speed shows steady high speed performance.
Tried different DNS configurations, no effect. Tried at least 10 other recommended fixes, none worked.
Put in older Linksys WRT54G V5 in place of Time Machine. Same problem.
Same exact problem with my wife's MacBook Pro.
This points to a problem between Snow Leopard and the ActionTec modem. But since it worked just great with Leopard, is there something I can change in the ActionTec or in Snow Leopard to get back the previous performance????
I don't believe buying new hardware is a good trial and error solution, so I'm looking for a configuration solution.
Thank you in advance for you suggestions.

I am posting a solution that worked for me on this issue.
This was similar to an issue I had back with Leopard (10.5) and Entourage. Using Entourage with my Exchange Server, every time an OS update would come up, my connection was unstable and would routinely disconnect for no reason. I found a solution on one of the Mac Boards on the Internet (I do not remember which) that fixed the issue, and that same fix seems to work for this slow WiFi connection problem. This assumes you have the problem with your home WiFi, or the WiFi WAP (Wireless Access Point) you are having connection issues with. In my case I was using an Apple Airport Time Capsule Access Point.
I write these steps in the simplest terms possible to ensure even a novice can understand and follow.
1- Go to you Keychain Access (Applications -> Utilities -> Keychain Access)
2- Look for the name of your WiFi WAP/Server (It should say AirPort network password next to it)
3- Double Click and then click on Show Password on the Attributes window (May ask you to Authenticate yourself for access to the Password)
4- Write down the WAP Password (it may be case sensitive, so be exact)
    5- Close Attributes window
6- Delete the entry with the name of the WiFi WAP name you selected on Step 2 above.
7- Close Key Chain Access window
8- Turn off your Airport on the menubar at the top of the screen (Airport Symbol -> Turn Airport Off)
9- Open System Preferences (Icon on your Dock) and then Click on the Network Icon
11- Click on the Airport entry and then on the Advanced button
12- Click on the Network Name of the WiFi/WAP you deleted in the Keychain Access (Step 6)
13- Click on the minus sign below the Network Names section (This deletes the WAP entry)
    14- Click OK
    15- Restart your Mac
What these steps do is erase the main entries that automatically connects you to your Airport WAP/Network account.
    After Restart, do the following:
1- Once your Mac has restarted, then turn on your Airport (Airport Symbol -> Turn Airport On)
2- Once the Airport has scanned for available WAP's/Networks click on your chosen WAP/Network (assuming it is your Home WAP)
3- It should ask you for the WAP/Network password (If it automatically connects to your WAP then you did not delete one of the entries listed previously in step 6 and/or 13. You will have to start over.)
4- Input the Password you copied in step 4 above
5- Airport Icon should show that you are connected by going from Grey to Black lines.
    6- You are done...
Once you follow these steps you should be connected to the Internet. You can test your Internet speed at www.speedtest.net
One optional step I do, which may make a difference for you, is that while the MacBook is restarting I disconnect power to the DSL modem for 10-15 seconds, and then re-connect it. This ensures you have a clean and renewed DSL connection with your provider.
One note of caution on this... when I did this fix for my Entourage problem under Leopard (10.5), every time an incremental OS update would come up, I found myself having to repeat these steps over again. It was not until Snow Leopard was installed that this issue completely went away. It seems that a new OS installation fixed whatever gremlin was laying underneath all of this.
This "Fix" did recently work on a 15" MacBook Pro 2009 model (10.6.5) that belongs to a friend of mine, and was experiencing very slow Internet WiFi speeds at his home. I hope it also works for you.
    Good luck....

  • Slow Wireless with 10.5.2

    Hello,
I am facing a problem after upgrading to 10.5.2. The performance of
my wireless connection is terrible. Loading pages in Safari is
very slow, download of files as well. However, when I boot into Vista
(Boot Camp) then wireless performance is excellent. Also performance
vie Ethernet Cable (Mac OS and Vista) is excellent. So only, the wireless
performance under 10.5.2 is bad. Any idea ?

Yup, this is a well known problem to the discussion groups, but apple continues to deny it exists. The discussion boards are littered with different permutations of this same problem. Interestingly, it doesn't seem to matter which mac you have, as it is affecting MBP, Macbook, and Air. Booting into windows makes it disappear, which makes me believe it is likely due to 10.5.2
I went to the apple store and (eventually) got a new Macbook, and I did not 'upgrade' to 10.5.2

  • SLOW wireless with Xfinity SMC gateway

    Moved to Xfinity Internet

Comcast usually overprovision for speed so if you had say 50Mbps you would likely see around 60Mbps. With 75Mbps you would expect to see around 80 or 90Mbps. Sounds like you didn't get the upgrade yet. A short 2 sec press of the recessed reset button will reset the device. Give it time for the lights to settle, try again. If still no joy, try a factory reset on the SMC press and hold the recessed reset button on the back for about 30 secs or so, using a pen tip or whatever. You could also unplug the device and remove the battery (if it has one) to achieve the same thing.Performing a Factory reset will cause any settings to be lost. If you still don't see about 80 or 90Mbps when wired directly to the modem, call in and ask 'em where your upgrade is. (By the way the SMC is notorious for it's poor wireless range).

  • Slow performance in production but fine in testing

    Hi,
I wanted to know that what are the possible reasons that the query work fine in testing phase but slow in production phase.
    Thanks

    user8379622 wrote:
We have various schemas on one server where the production data kept and have another server where the consistency check of data performed.
We have one application that run on set of data and generate the log in ascii format and then query on database and after that using sqlldr dump the data into oracle.
Testing team has tested the application by parallelly 10 processes and it upload the data within a sec but in the production env sometimes it run fine and sometimes it take ~4-6 min.
We tried but not able to find out the reason if it is at database level or application level issue. Statistics on database are fine.
Could you please suggest the possible causes so i will try to verify all the thing one by one to crack the issue.
ThanksYou need to instrument the application so it tells you where to look. For example, your log files could have comments of when they started and finished. This way you find out if it is your app connecting, your query running, your sqlldr being slow or some combination.
If it is the app connecting, then you can try other ways of connecting when the problem is happening, as well as checking the app and sqlnet logs for clues. If it is the query, you can use various methods to see what plan it is using - it is entirely possible that your data distribution is near some boundary condition that causes it to switch plans with very slight changes in data. You can also look at locks and waits to see if something is slowing it or the load down. There are a number of things that could change load performance - are you using direct path? Are other users updating at that time? How exactly are you implementing parallel?
I've found the basic dbconsole performance screen often points me in the right direction, especially being able to drill down to an explain plan for a session.
How do you know the "statistics on the database are fine?" Some plans can be messed up because of the default statistics gathering in some versions. Which versions and patch levels of everything are you using?

  • Youtube videos load slow in FF & Chrome, but fine in IE.

So my problem is that Youtube videos load in a very choppy way in Firefox and Chrome, first 15 seconds load, then there's a long pause, before next 15 or so seconds are loaded. However, they load smoothly on Internet Explorer. I've reinstalled browsers and Flash, tried disabling HW acceleration, all to no avail.

It seems to me that you should not need padding if the bottom image is 'pasted' to the bottom of the menu. If the bottom div is the same size as the image, you also don't need to say "background-position: bottom;" You know that it is the 'bottom' of the menu visually. The div doesn't care where it is...it's probable that the padding is pushing the image right out of the picture (so to speak).
I don't see the bottom padding on the markup, anyway. Are the image you are presenting corresponding to the code you pasted in? By the way, seeing code pasted in is not as good as seeing the page and code in situ...by getting a link for it.

  • My apple extreme wireless network is working fine with the macs but ios devices (iPhone & iPad) will not connect. I can see the network though. Everything was working until the ISP went down. Any suggestions?

My apple extreme wireless network is working fine with two Macs but ios devices (iPhone & iPad) will not connect. I can see the network and it's telling me I'm connected but Safari says I'm not connected to the internet. Everything was working until the ISP went down. Any suggestions?

Thank you, I've tried the support tips (resetting the network, checking security settings, etc.) and rebooting the network devices several times to no avail. I've actually been working on this for several days (when I can afford to have the network down).
What I have to determine is what has changed in the setup...from when it WAS working just fine with all devices.

  • I have OS 10.8.2 and use wireless at home just fine. When I visit a friend with only a cable modem internet my Mac Book Pro will not connect. What do I need to do?

I have OS 10.8.2 and use wireless at home just fine.
When I visit a friend with only a cable modem internet my Mac Book Pro will not connect.
I see that the Mac Book Pro is picking up the internet when I check the internet preference section but it will not open Safari.
What do I need to do connect via a cable modem?

You need to power off the modem for 15-30 seconds, then power back up and then connect. The modem is remembering the last connection (your friend).

Can someone tell me how to set up my PowerBook to
print wireless with my HP psc 2410 all-in-one?
What do I need to do?
I checked ifelx list and check out ok for my model.

    PowerBook G4 15 1.67GHz 10.4.2 512MB AirPort Extreme; iMac G4 20 1.25GHz Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Ensure that the Airport base station is configured to not distribute IP addresses.
    On the iMac
System Preferences > Sharing > Printer Sharing
    On the PowerBook
Applications > Utilities > Printer Setup Utility
    Add Printer
It may work with the HP driver (which you will need to install on the PowerBook)
It may work with a third-party driver such as the HPIJS drivers or the Gimp-Print drivers, but this is not the case with all printers.

  • Can't connect (wireless) to my Airport Express anymore with iBook, iPad or iPhone.

Can't connect (wireless) to my Airport Express anymore with iBook, iPad or iPhone. It still recognizes the printer on the iBook (bonjour), but not on my Windows notebook (work). The only device that still connects via wireless is the PlayStation 3.

The latest firmupdate solved the issue.

  • Slow connection with wireless, normal when wired

I've looked at the previous posts regarding this problem but I don't know how to do any of the recommended procedures. I can connect to the internet wirelessly with no problem but my wireless connection has become very slow all of a sudden (speakeasy speed test is 150-300 kbps). If I connect with a cable instead (wired connection) I get my great Comcast digital cable download speed on Speakeasy which is 15-16 Mbps! Previous posts mention looking at what the "RWIN" is set at and changing it but I'm not comfortable messing around with such basic Windows XP settings when I don't know how to reset back to the default if it doesn't work. Is there any patch from Linksys for fixing this or another easy way to fix it? Thanks! Kenshu

First thing is download firmware from www.linksys.com/download, and update it to latest version. Now follow this from a wired computer : Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser's address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name. Here enable MTU and set size to 1350. Go to security tab, and disable block anonymous internet requests. Change channel to 11. Go to advanced wireless settings and here change beacon interval to 50, fragmentation threshold to 2306, and RTS threshold to 2307, DTIM to 2. Now reboot modem and router.

  • Slow wireless speed with PPPoE

I'm using a WRT54G wireless router configured with PPPoE connected to a DSL router which is acting as the DHCP server. The DSL connection is 10 Mbps. I have two roommates wired to the router and me and another roommate wirelessly. The two computers that are wired directly are getting speeds around 8.5-9.5 Mbps, but I'm getting 3 tops. And lately its diminishing to a few hundred Kbps. while the others are still up at full speed. Is there some setting on the router that is throttling down the wireless speed when using PPPoE? Thanks

Wireless connections are always slower than wired connections, but in most cases, you should be able to achieve at least 50% or more of the wired speed (unless you are so far away from the router that your signal is poor just from distance).
There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
If your troubles persist, note that with newer routers, some users have found that WPA or WPA2 encryption works better than WEP.
If you still have trouble, for wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps. For wireless n routers, try setting the "n Transmission Rate" to 162 Mbps, and the (wireless g) "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
Another option is to try to adjust the QOS (Quality of Service) options on your router.  You might be able to give yourself a higher priority, and the wired connections a lower priority.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
    Hope this helps.

Yup, it was uploaded to our school Wiki as a PDF, and Pages did open it.  I was then able to move it to iBooks, but I'd rather avoid the extra steps.
