Slow with Lightroom
I have a Macbook connected to an external monitor that needs a dual link adapter -- an HP LP2475w. The monitor worked fine after I got the adapter and Lightroom was OK for awhile (1 yr) until my Lightroom functions started slowing down. Seriously. I've disconnected my external hard drives and it doesn't speed up much. An Apple Genius told me to install Snow Leopard, which I did and if anything Lightroom is slower. What can I do? I have 4 Ram and plenty of room in the Macbook.
The normal suspect would be that you haven't rendered out the previews, but the low cpu value would indicate that the problem actually lies elsewhere. Even so, it would do no harm to run the Render Standard-sized preview command (Library module View menu)
Next thought is the operating mode. Lightroom 2.x can run as either a 32-bit or 64-bit application. With the amount of ram you have installed (very low for a box with this sort of power) you might find 32-bit is the best choice. You can change the mode by clicking on the Lightroom application icon then use the Get Info command (Cmd+I) to open the info panel
Tip: you would be well advised to increase your installed ram. Lr likes plenty of ram, especially in 64-bit mode. A good starting point would be 6GB or even 8GB

Lightroom 1.2 is slow with NEF
I use a Dualcore 9750, so my PC is fast. But it took LR sometimes a few minutes to settle a predefined preset. Anyone else the same problem ?
DirkI have complained bitterly about Lightroom's speed and now that I've turned the "Auto write to XMP" off I'm perfectly happy with Lightroom. I don't use Lightroom to adjust my photos anyway. I use Bridge, but I use Lightroom as a database to sort and find my photos, and to assign keywords (I primarily assign keywords in Bridge though). I have ~100K photos and until I turned Auto write off, Lightroom was so slow it was useless.
I totally agree with Denis "There are so many problems with this function in LR that I think Adobe should issue an update to disable this specific function until it can be fixed." -
recently bought a samsung NX30 camera which came with lightroom 5, after several hours of googling i got it setup properly with the correct camera raw to be able to access my raw images. I found my old laptop was very slow when processing the hundreds of images I usually take on a weekly basis. I bought a new faster laptop but when I looked for the cd with the software and serial I could not find it in the Xmas clutter. I downloaded a trial version of lightroom and got it working on my new laptop. Is there a way to access the serial number from my previously installed version and insert it into the trail version to make it work for me?
MyronMea culpa
While i registered all my cs2 thru 6 versions and my lightroom 2 thru 4 versions and recorded the serials and saved the adobe registration emails. Since this came as a freebee with the camera i neglected this vital step. I have the instslled version on my old laptop but want to install it on my new one. Thanks to Jim Hess I got the serial so all is well in my world and I will register it with ADOBE

Lightroom 5 slow with heavily edited images
Hi guys!
Lightroom 5 (64bit) gets really slow on my PC when the file I'm currently working on is already somewhat heavily edited. For example: A file with ~15 spot removal tool sites will slow down Lightroom to a great extent if I try to edit it further. This means that the cursor starts jumping around on the picture and applying changes I made to anything (e.g. highlights) takes much more time.
Here are some specs of my system:
OS: Windows 8 professional 64bit
CPU: i7-3770
RAM: 16 GB
GPU: Radeon HD 7970 GHz
Camera: Nikon D600 (24Mp)
File size: ~30 MB
The catalog is on a SSD and the pictures are on a HDD
Please let me know if you need more information. One thing I noticed is that Lightroom never uses more than 1.5GB RAM. Is this normal? The major conflict seems to be between the spot removal tool and lens corrections. Yes, it worked fine in LR4, but remember that the spot removal tool has been redeveloped for LR5 and maybe some further tuning is needed. In the meantime, either leave lens corrections until after any spot removal work, or (if you like to apply lens corrections early in the edit workflow) simply switch off the lens corrections panel (using the small panel switch) when doing the spot removal, then turn it back on again. Not a permanent solution, but a very simple workaround.

Is there a phone number I can call to talk to a live person about help with Lightroom issues ?
Is there a phone number I can call to talk to a live person about help with Lightroom issues ?
well the reason I wanted to talk to someone live because it would take forever to explain everything on here But anyway, here goes. I have an HP Pavilion Notebook with Intel Core i5-323om CPU @2.60 GHz and 8 gb ram 64bit. I am trying to run Lightroom 5.7 on my laptop and having major issues. I use an external hard drive for the storage of my photos. When I try to use Lightroom I run into many issues: Flickering of the screen, freezing up, slow, the loading circle just goes round and round lol. If I go to the washroom or leave the computer for even a minute it freezes up. I have to keep pressing Ctr/alt/delete to bring it back when it flickers. I have to constantly exit out of the program and restart it to be able to edit even just a couple of photos and then it starts acting up again.
I have tried un-installing and re-installing, updating everything on my pc, changing compatibility settings, updating development settings, I even took the laptop into have it looked at and they did all kinds of updates etc...and still couldn't figure out why it wasn't working for me. I have gone through the lists of troubleshooting for LR problems and there just seem to be nothing that works.....I have made new catalogues, moved them, tried using the software on my pc without the EHD, etc etc.......I have tried EVERYTHING...I think.....so I was looking for some answers as to why this is happening.... -
Getting started with Lightroom - Basic assistance!
Ok, forgive me - just starting with Lightroom (and anxious to get going!). I have a new book but I have questions on some other basics.
First of all, I have a Canon camera - I shoot my pics in Raw + jpg. After shooting my first raw shots, I have them on my laptop (Win) - they stay here before during the work in process (sort, process, and pick what I want to post on my site). Then I move all of them to a backup drive - which is also backed up on another drive.
Your suggestions - what is my first step? Do I import these into Lightroom (currently on my laptop drive)? Do I want to want to import all my pics (from library/folders on external drive) or just my 'need to work with' on laptop drive? What is the most effective us of the catalogs - do you only have one main catalog, one per 'shoot', etc?
As I start to work with these - will I ultimately save these in .raw since they are in .cr2 format? Is it best to convert all of them?
Once they are imported and I work with them and ultimately move them over to my external drive, will the location have any effect on this - i.e. since they were imported?
Functionality wise, I am ready to start using this - it's the initial stuff regarding my workflow that I am curious about!
Do you find this as a complement or replacement to Adobe PSE? Maybe I am used to 'opening a file' or doing the catalog in Adobe PSE that is throwing me off as I convert to a new process! Although, I didn't really use it for organization, just minor PP.
Thank you much for your response...I'm sure other people will be able to provide more in-depth answers to some of your questions, as I have little experience of Canon raw file formats or PSE. However, I'd like to offer you a couple of suggestions regarding your workflow.
1. The FIRST thing you should do after you download the files onto your laptop is to make the backups. Do this here and now, not later. If you don't, you only have one copy of your precious photos. If something goes wrong, you're going to kick yourself if you don't have a backup. Make sure you have your external backup at this stage too, if your laptop drive fails, then your backup is not much good to you if it's on the same drive.
2. Personally, before I import the photos into LR, I do a quick cull to get rid of what is obviously junk, ie. out of focus/unnecessary shots/etc. RAW files take up a lot of space and the more of them I import into LR, the slower it will be. That isn't to say I ONLY import the ones I am going to work with, rather, I DON'T import the ones I'm NOT actually going to keep and store. I do import photos that I eventually don't work with but I keep some anyway because at some point in the future I may come back to them for whatever reason.
As they say, your mileage may vary and it's worth trying different workflows until you find one that is quick and comfortable for you.
Kind regards,
MCV -
Building smart previews much slower in Lightroom 6 than in Lightroom 5
Building smart previews is much slower in Lightroom 6 than in Lightroom 5.
Creating a smart preview from a DNG (Fuji X-E1 raw file) takes about 12 seconds.
Enabling/disabling GPU accelaration does not really make a difference.
When monitoring the Lightroom process with Process Explorer the GPU usage is always 0.
Below is my system specification.
Anyone got some idea why this might be?

No sync with Lightroom mobile in lr 5.5
I can sync my photos from iPhone to LR 5.5
However, if I chose photos in LR to sync with LR mobile, they do not appear neither on the iPhone nor online.
What can I do? This is just a big disappointment.Hi All,
I am having the same problem described here and in several other posts.
Since upgrading to LR5.5 upload has been much slower, and has since stopped altogether with no changes from the desktop app syncing with the mobile app or vice versa.
I've been through a bunch of suggestions from Adobe's support, such as creating and dropping collections to try and kick start it. Deleting and letting rebuild the lrsync data folder. And then re-arranging photos within collections to try and resolve.
Initially some metadata changes were syncing, but images themselves weren't (all JPEG & CR2/RAW), but now nothing. No change in any collection on the desktop will sync to the mobile app or appear in the web version - lightroom.adobe.com.
I have also noticed that lightroom seems to be hitting the CPU very hard - all of the time, and the following message keeps appearing every few seconds in the system log:

Lightroom 6 creats smart previews slower than lightroom 5 why?
Can anyone tell me if this is a bug or something else... i couldn't beleive when I import my first gallery !!! IT WAS TOO SLOW (the smart previews import)!
I try the same gallery with Lightroom 5 and brought the smart previews in seconds !!Thanks , I will follow the tread that you have mentioned.
I read it just now and it is a deception. not sure that was a good idea for me to upgrade LR 5.7.1 to 6 "beta" as quick...
hopping new updates will increase and optimize the CPU utilization -
World of trouble with Lightroom
From what I've been reading, a lot of people seem happy with lightroom 1.0
It's giving me a world of trouble.
1. Sometimes it just crashes while importing a big folder of raw images. And when it doesn't crash, it takes forever.
2. I get outofmemory errors all the time
3. It seems unworkably slow...maybe I'm just not used to it.
4. When I'm importing from a memory card, there is no way to convert to .dng and have a full-sized image preview made at that time?
5. If I set a label in lightroom, using a .dng file, then later open the file with bridge, the label won't show up.
6. There are tons of interface glitches/annoyances. Like the annoying flaps on the side pop open when you don't want them to, then you have to wait for them to go away. When you use the key command to reject an image (X key), you can't just press (x) again to unreject it. You can't even do control-x or alt-x you have to get the mouse and click the stupid reject flag. And the flags don't show up in the loupe view...in fact there is very little info in the loupe view. So when you are looking at an image, you have to take your eyes away from it to see what the label is, what the flag is, etc.
I'm using XP x64...I don't know if this is a factor with the memory leaks and performance, but this really feels like beta software still. It doesn't feel like lightroom is ready for primetime yet!It is quite obvious by now that the Lightroom modules when run on the PC platform, with the exception of the 'Develop' module, are pretty much broken and should be used minimally.
The 'Develop' module is great, I have NOTHING bad to say about it, but the modules around it pretty much stink. And virtually nothing about it has to do with the PC platform itself.
As I keep saying, I love the 'Develop' module, but the 'Library' module is so full of bugs and shortcomings that it is best avoided. Specially from a professional perspective... it may be adequate for amateurs and their needs, but the glitches and workarounds make it pretty much unusable as a professional tool.
I guess I should justify my statements:
a) File Ingestion - Downloading files is slow since it does a simultaneous import, which builds up the database and therefore is slow. When you have to download several cards with several hundred photos and do picks on deadline, you don't have time to be waiting around for Lightroom to build previews. Solution: Download using the OS drag and drop or a dedicated tool like "Downloader Pro", and do your initial selection and sorting with a separate sorting package of your choice. Only after you have whittled down the photos using a different tool should you consider importing into the Lightroom database.
b) File renaming. Again, amateur at best when compared to even a cheap tool like BreezeBrowser.
c) File organization, tagging, etc. Unless you generate 100% previews, it is unusably slow. You need 100% previews if you will be considering detail during your sort. And generating all 100% previews takes forever and results in a HUGE ligrary... if you are sorting JPEGs, you end up with a thumbnail collection larger than you original photo collection! So the solution is: IMPORT ONLY FINAL CHOICES INTO THE LIGHTROOM LIBRARY. Use Lightoom only for significant 'keepers'. Do your initial ingestion and sorting using almost anything else.
Once you get the actual photos that you want to adjust into the Library, and no more, then the program starts to really shine.
The stability is somewhat better on the Mac platform (I use both platforms), but the same issues of ingestion time, renaming, 100% preview building exist. They are part of the program core design.
(Slideshow and HTML generators are not even worth considering at this time, they are so limited when compared to so many other options available. I can not comment on the print module, since it does not do "print to File", provide soft-proofing, allow output to specific profiles, etc... so it too is fairly limited for 'pro' purposes, and utterly useless if you output to commercial printing systems.) -
Which hardware upgrade to solve The Unbearable Slowness of Lightroom 3?
Hello,
I’m not going to start another thread about the slowness of Lightroom 3 because I also encounter most of the problems mentioned in the forums since upgrading to LR3: very slow response when using Adjustment Brush (which was already really slow on my machine when using LR2), loading images in Develope Module could take up to 30 seconds, browsing through the images takes forever, etc. I read lots of threads and tried several solutions but nothing works. There is no fun in post-processing images anymore.
I’m planning to upgrade my 4y old hardware very soon. Currently I’m using an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4Ghz, 4GB DDR2-800 RAM, Windows XP 32-bit, Nvidia 8800GT with 1GB RAM, WD Velociraptor (for OS, LR Catalogs, LR Cache).
I’m worried that my upgrade to faster hardware won’t solve my performance issues. I called a colleague-photographer last week who bought a MacPro dual quad-core 2.26Ghz and 8GB RAM in December last year and claims that his LR catalog with 150K images works very fast and smooth. On the other side, I have read several contradictory stories on the Adobe Forums where fast configurations also suffer performance issues, but where also normal configurations work more than fast enough. It remains vague what causes Lightroom to slow down. Probably multiple factors?
According to your experiences, which hardware upgrade will give Lightroom 3 the highest performance boost in comparison with my current system?
- Custom pc upgrade Win7 64-bit, Intel i7-930 2.8Ghz quad-core, 9 or 12GB DDR3-1600 RAM
- Custom pc upgrade Win7 64-bit, Intel i7-980 (or i7-970) six-core, 9 or 12GB DDR3-1600 RAM
- MacPro with dual quad-core 2.4Ghz, 8 or 10GB DDR3-1066 RAM
- MacPro single six-core 3.33Ghz, 8 or 10GB DDR3-1333 RAM
Is my videocard of any importance? I mean, do I choose Nvidia or ATI?
Thanks!ambienttroutmask wrote:
Using an on board graphics card will just not drive monitors correctly at high resolutions and also will use the computers RAM. If you are running LR on a single low resolution monitor then on board graphics cards may be fine...but otherwise a separate card is absolutely a requirement.
I have no doubt that the above quote was meant to be helpful, but a separate (discrete) card is absolutely NOT a requirement for anyone specing a new machine for Lightroom.
Lightroom does not currently use graphics card/chips to do any image rendering. Things like demosaicing, noise reduction, sharpening and lens/perspective correction happen exactly at the same speed with integrated graphics as they do with $500 graphics cards. And displaying an image on high or low resolution monitors is handled by a low-level component know as a RAMDAC - which is independent of whether you have integrated or discrete graphics.
My dual core deskside and notebook computers running Win 7-64 are each capable of delivering about the same Lightroom performance. But in practice, I find that my deskside is much better for rendering because my new notebook only uses Turbo Boost to run at 3 GHz for a minute or two, before it throttles back because of heat (notebook CPU fans are much smaller than desktop/deskside fans). A discrete card would only excerbate the heat problem on my notebook and wouldn't add anything but cost for Lightroom on my 8GB deskside.
Some details for folks interested in the technical bits:
I have two systems that I use Lightroom on. Both have intel dual cores, have integrated graphics and run Win7-64. The older deskside has a 3 GHz e8400 with integrated graphics implemented on a separate chip, 8GB of memory and 4 internal disk drives. The newer notebook has a 2.4 to 2.9 GHz i5-520M with 4GB of memory, graphics embeded in the CPU chip and two internal disk drives. There is no Lightroom use case that would benefit buy "upgrading" either of these two machines to use a separate graphics card - except one. If I were routinely processing images much larger than almost all photographers create, a discreet card could help expand memory. But if memory is the constraint, it makes much more sense to add it directly to the base machine that it does to spend more money on a separate graphics card.

Google bought Nik - will they create a product to compete with Lightroom?
Google bought Nik - will they create a product to compete with Lightroom?
As far as competition for Lightroom or Photoshop... In 2006, an engineer from Microsoft showed me a product that was under development there. Even THEN, it had a number of features that didn't show up in Photoshop until CS4 of even CS5 - things like content aware cloning and such. With my experience with Adobe, I was STILL hoping for an absolutely devastating competitor 'cause even 6 - 7 years ago Adobe was already becoming problematic for releasing software with problems, buying features from companies where they worked really well and dumbing them down so they could incrementally "improve" them over multiple versions, adding very little SIGNIFICANT new content and still calling it a new release and charging, rather than making it a maintenance release, and, of course, being slow to address significant problems... I saw and earlier not in here complaining how it took Nik 2 MONTHS to fix some problem... How long we been waiting for real, significant, corrections to performance issues in LR4?
Which, of course, gets us to the price... I'm sure there'll be a chorus of folks claiming $600 is very reasonable for Photoshop, but a really killer competitor would be a great thing for correcting some of the (in my opinion) price excesses we see from Adobe.
I don't think it'll happen 'cause the 800 pound gorilla is firmly entrenched, but I don't care if it's Google or MS or whoever. I'd still love to see SOMEBODY absolutely blow away Photoshop or Lightroom. -
Have a problem with Lightroom 5.4. Since the program crashed yesterday it won't launch, it comes up with the message "Lightroom encountered an error when reading its preview cache and needs to quit". " Lightroom will attempt to fix this problem next time it launches". Except that it doesn't, I keep getting the same message and the program closes. Does anyone know what I can do to repair it? Can't back up, can't do anything.
There are dozens of threads in this forum that describe the fix

IMac mid 2010 slow with 10.9
Hi,
My 2010 imac (i5, 4G mem) has been pretty slow since mavericks - the system seems slow and unresponsive with even simple operations seeming sluggish (my 8yr old core 2 duo laptop with 10.6 was way more responsive).
I came across the thread Re: iMac mid 2010 slow with 10.9 and hoped I might be able to get some advice.
I have previously reinstalled the system from fresh to see if this would help - and while it did for a while it seems to have become slow again.
I tried starting in safe mode and it didn't seem very different. Some operations seemed slower and the window redrawing was really choppy and a bit weird (not sure if this is usual in safe mode?)
I noticed that while I was running EtreCheck and perhaps also Diskutility just now (after running the imac in safemode and then restarting it) that the Finder kept restarting. All the icons would vanish and then reload in the finder window and on the desktop. I haven't seen this before.
I have installed and run EtreCheck and the results are below. If anyone could give some advice that would be really appreciated. Thanks

Problem with Lightroom and Epson Printer
I'm suddenly having problems printing from Lightroom. I have Lightroom 1.4.1 installed on an iMac G5, and have an Epson Photo Stylus R2400. I've been using this combination from the beginning with no problems. Now suddenly when I try to print I get an error message that says Media is out or not loaded correctly. Neither is the case. I have tried restarting my computer, the printer and everything else I can think of, but nothing works. I can print from any other application without problems, so I'm assuming it's an issue with Lightroom.
Has anyone experienced anything similar? I was going to uninstall lightroom and do a reinstall but I can't find my installation disc. Now I'm at a loss to figure out what to do.
Thanks,
CraigTry deleting you prefs file and/or print templates.
Lightroom is unique to many other programs in that it saves and restores printer settings. Some bad data may tried to be passes. A "fresh start" might help.
