Slow write speeds for Sandisk Extreme 16gb USB 3.0

I had high hopes for this drive after seeing it highly ranked in various USB stick reviews; however, despite the read-speed being as good as I had hoped (at about 200 MB/s), the write-speed is much less than I would have expected, clocking in at about 50MB/s.
I performed these tests on Windows 8, both by copying over a single large file and simply viewing the speed information windows provided, and next by using the "Flash Bench" software. The laptop has an Intel i7, and both my ports are USB 3.0, HDD speed is 7400rpm.
I then tried formatting the drive as FAT, NTFS, exFAT, but in each case the speed did not improve.
Why is the write speed so slow?

I was thinking, are my speeds actually that bad: I did some tests with crystal disk mark to compare with the results in a review  here. They get speeds like 195.7MB/s seq read and 61.65MB/s seq write, and they note that this is good. My speeds are actually more like 230MB/s seq read and 50 MB/s write, so it would seem not too far off theirs, and I think this test is reliable as it agrees with the 50MB/s I get for writing a file onto the disk etc. Are other people getting write speeds much faster than 50MB/s when they copy a file onto the USB? I should emphasise I have the 16gb model. It seems again from the review I posted above, that the write speed of the 32gb and 64gb versions is actually much quicker for some reason that the 16gb.

  • Read/Write speeds with Airport Extreme and USB Hard Drives

Anybody know how fast the read/write speeds are with a USB hard drive and the Airport Extreme Base Station?
    My Setup
    I have a 17 MBP (2010) and a 13 MBP (2011) - no SSD's
MBP generally connect via 802.11n 5Ghz with a very strong signal
Gigabit connection on a Windows Desktop
    I have a variety of external drives (7200, 5400, Drobo) at varying capacity (320GB, 2TB, 5.6TB)
    Goals
    Backup: Time machine
Backup: File copies of pictures and home videos (greater than 1GB files)
    Backup: Crashplan
File sharing: Aperture libraries--not sure if that is possible or practical. That is something that I need to research further...but on the off chance people have experience with it.
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Apple's AirPort base stations aren't known for fast file serving, but for most purposed they're fast enough.
I can't comment specifically on your Aperture plan, but with some software it's important to avoid simultaneous access by more than one user.

  • Mac Pro slow write speed on Samsung SSD drive

    Hi,
I am wondering why I get very slow write speeds on my Samsung SSD 840 Series 250 GB system startup drive in my Mac Pro (early 2008).
I get an average write speed of approx. 35 MB/s and not much more for top speed. I tested it by transfering a large file (8GB, .m4v) from my Mac Pro internal Raid 0 (4x 2TB Stripe Set) delivering up to 550 MB/s. The read speed of the SSD is around 270 MB/s which I consider to be OK for that I have just the 3 Gb/s internal SATA interfaces in my pretty outdated Mac Pro.
I don't see any Memory or CPU overruns or consuming system tasks while doing the tests and no other user programs except Activity Monitor is running. The following screen shots from the Activity Monitor should proove my findings:
    Setup:
Samsung SSD 840 Series 250 GB (SATA 6Gb/s and 3Gb/s compatible) system startup drive. Free Space left on SSD is around 100GB of 250GB.
    Mac Pro (early 2008, Model 3,1), 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 8 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB.
    OS X Mavericks 10.9.1
Samsung sais there should be 540 MB/s for Seq. Read and 250 MB/s for Seq. Write for their SSD drive.
Any hints what could be done to increase especially that low write speed of around 35 MB/s (average) on the SSD in my Mac Pro?

    Really great 'The hatter' !!!
Thanks a lot for your exceptional support.
Next to my 4x discs in the 4 SATA II drive bays I have installed a additional OWC drive kit that allows me to have another 2 disks sitting in the empty bay below the CD/DVD drive and those are connected to the motherboard. So there is a lot to handle for that controller you mentionned ;-)
I will follow your guidance and boot from my 'maintenance' system on direct attached external drive, install the TRIM Enabler there as well and do the DU repair run. I always have a separate system available that gives me the chance to boot my Mac from there. And in addition I regularly use ONYX to keep my OS X clean and do the maintenance.
Anyway, you're the man of the day!
PS; I am looking forward to finally receive my new Mac Pro (late 2013) ordered on the 18th of December one of these days and then I hope that I can fly ;-)

Do you ever visit a friend or realtive with a Mac who has faster internet? Maybe the local library has Macs on a fast line. If so, get a USB thumb drive and put this link on it from your computer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Then put this link on the drive:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1429
When you are at some place that has a Mac with a decent download speed. insert the thumb drive in that Mac and click on the first link ("DL1399") and direct the download to your thumb drive. Now do the same this with the second link.
The installer files will now be on the thumb drive and, when you get home, drag them from the thumb drive to your desktop. Install the Combo update first.

  • Usb hard drive - slow write speed

Hey all you mac savvy people out in mac land.
I got the airport extreme n edition for christmas and I set the thing up at the 5Ghz N speed (300Mbps) and all is happy. then I connected my external usb 2.0 hard drive to begin using that as a network storage, the airport picks it up and sees it, and I can read/write to it. When I read from it, it reads really fast at about 6 MBps (i can see this speed by using the iStat widget) but the write speed to it is about 2 MBps (again, through iStat). I know that the hard drive itself is not slow because hard wired to it is really fast and i know that the airport extreme is fast for transfers because i transfer about 12-13 MBps to my pc. Why is it that the write speed going wireless to it is slow? any ideas?

    hi Daew,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
The results that you got while running CrystalDiskMark is normal. The SATA 2 (3Gb/s) that you mentioned is actually the SATA interface support, not the actual read/write performance.
If you have a Seagate HDD (eg. ST10000LM024), check these specs
From the above specs, the unit has a cache that has a read/write max speed of 145 MB/s but there are environmental factors and power requirements to get this speed (eg. read/write speed on AC power is differente from battery power).
AFAIK, if this is the specs that is design for this drive, there's no way to speed it up.
If you're planning to upgrade in the future though, you can get an SSD for faster read/write.

  • What is the Read/Write speed for a 250gb Serial ATA hard drive?

Hello. I've been having some problems via my Mac (Kernel panic at start up) and is thinking wether or not it is the hard drive.
Does anyone know what the Write speed is for the specified hard drive. I'm currently getting about 5 mbps and that feels a bit slow
I'm on a Macbook Pro mid 2009 model.
    Thanks in advance
    Ashley.

I haven't got the logs. I had to reinstall everything in order to get it to start up (Couldn't find ACPI?)
And I'm only asking because it seems like my laptop HD is running slow. Is it normally about 5mbps for a 5400rpm HDD?

  • [Solved] Very slow write speeds to mounted partition

I have a separate partition for data which is set to automount on boot in fstab(I haven't gotten it to work any other way yet. Could be related?) and writing files from a download in Deluge to it was incredibly slow and affected the download speed grossly. I tested it by using the same download but selecting my local desktop as a save location. The download speed was at ~50KB/s using the data partition and 2MB/s using local desktop folder. Further, transfer speeds while trying to move the file to the partition after it was downloaded, resulting in a measily 70KB/s.
Is there something I'm missing, like some sort of buffer/write speed limit on the partition?
Here is how I have my fstab configured:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>

WonderWoofy wrote:Yes, as it is an internal partition, and therefore forced removal is really not an issue, I am not sure why you are using sync in the first place.  The way I understand it, the sync option is really to be used when you have some kind of removable drive.  That way, when you copy things to it there isn't the usualy buffering, resulting in the process reporting completion instantly, when really there might be hundreds of megabytes waiting to be written.
Yeah, after reading up on it a bit more thats exactly it. I wasn't exactly sure how it was handled/where it cached or stored the file temporarily before writing to the disk and being on a relatively small partition space is of concern. Although looking back  it was silly because it's not like I'll be transferring anything that large anytime soon
Anyway, this fixed it. You guys rock

  • Extremely slow upload speed on Airport Extreme

I've had a perfectly working Airport Extreme for about 3 years now and suddenly the other night it decided it would slow it's upload speed to a crawl. Speedtest.net gives me an upload speed of 15-20 Mbps download speed but a tiny .07 Mbps upload speed.  I've been through the forums and ttried changing my Ethernet WAN Port settings to 1000 Mbsp and 100 Mbps instead of Automatic and I still have the same issue with 100 setting and it won't even connect at the 1000 setting.  I've tried prior software versions (was running 7.6.1), restarting, and reverting to the factory settings and setting up a new network all to no avail.   Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

I've been through the forums and ttried changing my Ethernet WAN Port settings to 1000 Mbsp and 100 Mbps instead of Automatic and I still have the same issue with 100 setting and it won't even connect at the 1000 setting.
Unless your modem supports Gigabit Ethernet connections then setting the WAN port on the Extreme to 1000 will not work. Have you tried both of the 100 Mbps settings ... i.e., both Full and Half-Duplex?
The key here is what may have changed between the AirPort and the modem that could have caused your upload speed to drop. Depending on the generation of your AirPort, it can support LAN-to-WAN speeds up to 400 Mbps.
If changing the WAN setting doesn't help, I would suggest two things: 1) Reset the WAN setting to Automatic, and 2) Perform a complete power recycle of your networking equipment, as follows:
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref:Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Slow Internet Speeds with Airport Extreme

I am noticing a dramatic slow down with my Airport Extreme. However, I have noticed this is an intermittent issue. Here are the specs of what I am running:
    • Airport Extreme Base station that is plugged into a cable modem. The AEBS is routing the IP addresses.
    • Plugged into the AEBS is an 800mhz iMac that is hardwired in. No slow down is noted on this computer.
    • MacBook (Less than 2 months old) is connected to the AEBS wirelessly.
    • iPhone is connected to the AEBS wirelessly.
Where I am having the problems is with the MacBook. I will have full signal strength and yet it takes for ever to load a page. Plus sometimes the connection will time out. As stated above this is an intermittent issue. Sometimes everything works fine, other times the connection has issues. All pieces of equipment are running the latest firmware. Does anyone have any suggestions to solve this issue?

I would recommend changing the wireless channel of the Extreme.
Open Airport Utility, and select Manual Setup. Note on the summary page what the channel is set to, most often it will be set to channel 6 (Automatic), but it could be anything between 1-11.
Goto the Wireless tab and adjust the channel so it several channels apart from the current one. If it is on channel 6, I recommend channel 1 or 11.

  • Slow Transfer Speeds For File Transfer Manager 5.0 Build 0032

When downloading from the TechNet Benefits section I have to use the Transfer Manager and I can only get speeds that vary between 30-80 Kbytes per second. Rarely any faster.
I am using XPPro & IE7 straight out onto the Internet via my router / firewall. No proxy server.
What can I do to speed the process up or bypass the File Download Manager?
