  • How to find out what is slowing down your wireless speed

The first thing you need to do is when setting up your wireless internet is do it right from the beginning. For starters unplug and remove the batteries from all the cordless phones. If you have a wireless door bell or a repeater shut it off and unplug it.. Anything that is wireless in your house needs to be turned off. This also includes cell phones, Ipad's and Ipod's.This thing of telling the homeowner that the mircowave is causing problem is hog wash. But don't have it running while you are setting this up. In other words nothing in your house should be running including the AC and heat. Anything that is pulling hi amperage should be shut down during the set up. Now unplug all cables on the router except for your computer cable and power supply to the router. Hold the reset button in long enough to clear all settings. Now you are ready to set this up right. Sign into your router and go to My Network, if it is showing something other that your main frame computer you still have something on that the router is picking up. Find it and turn if off and reset the router again. Once everything is cleaned and the only this showing up is the computer you are ready. Now go to Speed Net or what ever you check your speed with and write down your average speed. Do three or four speed test to get the average reading. BTW, clear all cookies before you check your speed. Now go back into your router settings and rename you computer to what ever so you won't get that IP address confused with the rest of your hook up. Next take only one of your wireless devices and turn it on. Once the router picks it up rename it and put the security code on for that device to connect to the wireless device. It should also show it as being a wireless device. Also if all your devices can except performance mode go for it because the speeds will always be faster. Also start selecting one channel at a time to find the one that has the fastest speed. Try doing this close to the router, like in the same room. If you are using the performance mode your upload and download should be close to your wired connection. Now go to different parts of the house. You will see some drops but that is normal. Don't do this test on a PS3 or a WII because those speeds will always be slow no matter what you do. All Apple products won't work with Speed Net. Once you get connected to the internet it is always better to go back into your router and write down the assigned IP address and the IP address to the router sign in and manually put them in to each device. Always remember the higher security setting you can set you the faster the speed will be. Do each device as said in the above way. Something else you also might want to do is after you have set up each wireless device go back into your router setting under Wireless settings and disable SSID Broadcast. Only thing this will do is make it to where nobody can see your wireless connection. That way when someone wants to hack your router they won't be able to see it...ya can't hack what ya can't see....lol. Once you get all said wireless devices set up and connected then go back and start turning on phones...ect..ect. If you are truly getting interference you will be able to change the channel on either that device or change the channel on the router for that device. Most of the devices in this day and time should be able to except the 802.11n or the next letter down. The bad thing about the newest Verizon router is the security is still outdated for the PS3. Part two of this is Sony is still using a crap-o-la wireless internet receiver, as a result I don't care what cha do unless you hard wire it in and that still only helps some. Also this thing of putting your router on the window seal or up near the ceiling is also poo poo. If this was a true case why not just hook up a High Def antenna in the room...lol Also this thing of stating don't put the router near a wall is also doo doo. Their would have to be a load of copper wire in that wall to prevent a signal from going through it. If you think about it all wall electrical outlets are wired low to the floor. They take one room and wire them all together. They don't wire it up and down the walls. So most rooms have the wiring a foot from the floor. The most wire you will find in a house at one location is at the circuit breaker box and the box should be on a outside wall in the garage. In older homes like the 40's and 50's some are in the kitchen or a bedroom closet. On the older homes try and steer clear of those locations. Now if you are getting interference from something in your home this will be a easy way to find it. One thing Verizon needs to stop telling it's customer and that is if you get a faster speed which is more money it will correct your wireless problem...hog wash Once you spend your hard earned money and sign the contract, they forget to tell you they only guarantee that speed if it is hard wired...lol for some reason they always forget that part.

I forgot to suggest one more thing. On your computer go to start/ run/ type in MSCONFIG and go all the way to the right and click start up and then at the bottom select disable all and then reboot. Windows will only load what it need to operate. After that go back into MSCONFIG and go back to the start up and put a check into what ever security program you are using and reboot. Everything will still work fine. The only thing you are doing here is not running all the programs each time you turn your computer on.What this will do if you do this is it will start programs faster and it also is less wear and tear on your pooter. If you want to see what I am talking about go here>> http://www.blackviper.com/ and he will explain and show in full detail what I am talking about as far as being robbed by unnecessary programs running in the back ground. He will also explain the correct way of disabling things that you will never use. MS is set up for remote operation. Like calling your pooter from a phone which I am pretty sure most don't use that feature. If you want to see what happens when you go to any site while surfing download the free copy of CrapCleaner, run it and let it remove all the internet clutter and cookies, then go to one site and close IE down and rerun CrapCleaner again. You will then see what is really slowing down your internet speed. If you are using Windows 7 or 8 you need to go to Control Panel/ Taskbar and Start Menu/ then select Start menu again/ Customize/ and scroll down to Run Command and check it. Now you will be able to see the run command. I don't know why MS removed that feature.

  • AC1600 Slow Wired And Wireless Speed

    Hello,
I just purchase a smart WiFi router model AC1600. The speed off my router is 3 times as slow as what is coming from my MTA from the cable company. I reinstall my firmware and rebooted it several times, but the best I can get is 6 Mbps downstream while I am getting between 22-30 Mbps downstream off my cable MTA without the router. I love the security the AC1600 provide and would love to keep it, but I hate my speed I am getting from it...any advice will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

  • Slow Time Capsule Wireless Speed

I've had my 500GB TC over 2 weeks now, and it's taking absolutely AGES to back up each time. Some occasions it only has to back up MB's worth of stuff but it still takes ages.
Why is this, and what can I do about it?

Just to add some of my experiences to the debate.
I use a late-2008 TC and connect it wirelessly to an ISP supplied modem/router and a late-2008 iMac. Because of limitations with the modem/router, I had to use 802.11n at 2.5 GHz. The internet connection is via the modem/router and internet usage from the iMac is fine in all circumstances (it does not go via the TC).
Performance was pretty good with 7.3.2 but when I originally tried to upgrade to 7.4.1, TC backup became very slow and pretty unreliable. In my case, restarting the router got things going again but TC usage was always a pain. So, I reverted to 7.3.2 and ran beautifully for several months.
Then I tried 7.4.2 when it came out and my regular hourly backups became very slow, typically taking 70-80 minutes rather than 2-3 minutes. However, in contrast to 7.4.1, the connection to the TC was very reliable if slow, somewhat different to my experience with 7.4.1.
Switching back to 7.3.2 and TC was back to normal.
Being curious and having time, I decided to try changing things and see what happens. First tried dropping the wireless to use 802.11g. Result with 7.4.2 was excellent - probably a little faster than 7.3.2 with 802.11n. Tried 7.3.2 with 802.11g and that was as good as 7.4.2 with 802.11g.
Then tried letting the modem/router select the wireless channel and 7.4.2 with 802.11n became a lot better but remained at least twice as slow as 7.4.2 with 802.11g (but not 30 times worse).
So, what do I conclude from that? Not exactly sure but there would appear to be something amiss with the 802.11n support on the 2.5 GHz band for the "old" single band TC when using 7.4.2. Perhaps it is more susceptible to interference or something but when faced with identical circumstances (just switching the firmware level, no other change), it is definitely worse to very much worse.
For now I am happy with 802.11g and 7.4.2.

  • Wrt54gs2 slow wireless speed

I have a brand new wrt54gs2. At first I had trouble getting to the configuration page unless I rebooted it. I upgraded the firmware and seemd to fix it, but now the wireless speed is very slow. I configured it as I have configured many 54gs before. The wireless speed is less than 1MB and the wired speed is over 12MB. Any suggestions. (I want my wrt54g back!)

    @sandman879   Thanks for the pointer!!
I registered with this site just to respond!
The wireless web access check was exacttly it!
I did the firmware upgrade to the June 2009 release, and I was still slower than 4k upload and 87k download. After I did the check on the web access from wireless, I was back up and running at normal speeds.
I like the idea of locking out the router maintanace page to wireless users, but not at the expense of killing off bandwidth.
I really hope Linksys/Cisco takes a look into that and upgrades the filter on that. I wonder if the router just got overloaded with inspecting the wireless packets for destination addresses of the router. LAME! That's a 1993 problem.
So really everyone, check to see if you have the Wireless Web Access option disabled, then take a deep breath and tell that security monkey in your head to shut up and enable that option.

  • WRT54G Wireless speed poor

Hi guys, I have a WRT54g router and I recently moved and had to connect wirelessly to the router for various reasons and I found out that the speed is very slow, we are on a 30mbps connection and receive about 12-16 depending on how the router feels through wireless. When connected directly to the router through ethernet the speed is spot on at 30mbps.
I looked around and found a few fixes, tried them and they haven't helped, even if you sit directly next to the router the speed doesn't go over 16mbps.
    My firmware version is  v4.30.14

    Hi redpiano,
There might be an interference on your network. It's recommended to place the router on a higher location for better wireless signal and fast wireless speed. You may change the wireless channels of your router. You can use channels 6,3,9,1 or 11. Make sure as well that your network is secured. • Slow wireless speed with PPPoE

I'm using a WRT54G wireless router configured with PPPoE connected to a DSL router which is acting as the DHCP server. The DSL connection is 10 Mbps. I have two roommates wired to the router and me and another roommate wirelessly. The two computers that are wired directly are getting speeds around 8.5-9.5 Mbps, but I'm getting 3 tops. And lately its diminishing to a few hundred Kbps. while the others are still up at full speed. Is there some setting on the router that is throttling down the wireless speed when using PPPoE? Thanks

Wireless connections are always slower than wired connections, but in most cases, you should be able to achieve at least 50% or more of the wired speed (unless you are so far away from the router that your signal is poor just from distance).
There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
If your troubles persist, note that with newer routers, some users have found that WPA or WPA2 encryption works better than WEP.
If you still have trouble, for wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps. For wireless n routers, try setting the "n Transmission Rate" to 162 Mbps, and the (wireless g) "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
Another option is to try to adjust the QOS (Quality of Service) options on your router.  You might be able to give yourself a higher priority, and the wired connections a lower priority.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
    Hope this helps.

  • WRT600N slow wireless speeds

I have a WRT600N router.  I have one PC that is connected to the router via a wired connection.  I also have an iPad (3rd generation) that is connected to the router via a wireless connection. On my PC, I went to speedtest.net and determined that I am receiving like 20MB downloads via the wired connection.  However, my iPad only gets approximately less than 2 MB download speeds.  I have tried reseting the router and I do have what I believe to be the latest firmware update (Firmware Version: 1.01.36 build 4).     I also receive the slow download speeds when I try connecting the other wireless devices.  I assume my problem has to do with some sort of configuration setting found in the router configuration page (http://192.168.1.1/).  Can anyone please advise me what to do?  The router is only a few feet away from my iPad so the signal strength is strong.  I just don't understand why I'm receiving such slow wireless download speeds.

This suggestion did not work.  I tried to isolate the problem by optimizing the router's wireless settings. I used the 2.4GHz, set the radio band to standard 20Mhz then set the standard channel to 9. The laptop had the same slow wireless speeds as the iPad did.
This may be due to the IPv6 feature on your computer. One of the solutions may be disabling IPv6. If the issue still exist after performing this step and download speed is fine when connected straight to the modem then reset reconfigure could work, just use WPA2 for the security with AES and a fixed channel for wireless.

  • EA6200 in Bridge Mode Slow Wireless Speeds

    Hello All,
I just purchased a Linsys EA6200 AC router (refurb) to extend my existing wireless network. I have setup the 6200 as an access point using the Bridge Mode outlined in the Users Guide (automatic configuration). While I am able to connect to the Internet from the router wirelessly, my Internet speeds while connected are roughly a third of my max MBPS, I have a 55 MBPS connection and consistently get speeds around 14-20 MBPS with this router from a 10-12 foot wireless distance. I get full speed while wired in, however, as soon as I go back to WiFI I get a significant performance drop.
Is there something that can be done to correct this? I am running the latest firmware and have set the 2.4G channel to 20mhz and the 5G channel to 40mhz while specifying a channel number with no increase in performance or speed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

What Mfr and model is the main host router?
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N or Mixed on 5Ghz on the main host router?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz. 20Mhz can slow the wireless speeds down.
Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions. Try channel 48 or 149 on 5Ghz.

  • Slow wireless speed with new iMac Intel- problem with 802.11g?

There IS a problem with the new Intel Mac, I have tried both the Intel iMac and the new Intel Mac mini and they both have the same problem with slow wireless speed (or rather it variates, if I do a ping to another computer on the network the speed goes from < 1 ms up to 1000 ms and then down to < 1 ms and so on). The older mac minis, my Linux boxes and my Windows PCs don´t have that problem. I have also read reports on the net and it appears that most users experiencing this problem have wireless card firmware version 101.3 (3.120.28.3) . A possible "fix" is to change to 802.11b on the router and then it works. No speed fluctuations and a stabile network! I know it is a bad solution, I would prefer to use 802.11g and get the speed. However I think this points to a problem with the drivers regarding 802.11g. I am starting up a new thread on this and those of you with problems, please try to switch to 802.11b and if it works let us make Apple aware of this.

No, BT does not have one, only web forms.
This forum should be able to help if you would like to specify which BT Home hub you have, and what wireless devices you are having problems with. Also, are you on ADSL or a BT Infinity connection.
Is your speed fine, if you use an Ethernet connection?
BT do not guarantee wireless speeds, as there are too many variables.

  • VERY slow wireless speeds since Infinity 2 upgrade

I don't know whether it is just coincidence or not but ever since BT upgraded my Infinity Unlimited to Infinity 2, the wireless speeds on my home network have been ridiculously slow. With a wired connection I get about 55-65 Mbps download and 10-15Mbps upload typically, while on wireless it's a fraction of that. For instance, the last test I did gave 3.33Mbps download and 0.13Mbps upload! I have tried different routers, tried changing the wireless channels, tried turning off other wireless equipment in the house, all to no avail. The strange thing is, the wireless signal strength is showing good to excellent. The speeds I obtained when Infinity was first installed were typically around 20Mbps download and 7-8Mbps upload.
I have contacted BT India and they said they were going to run some tests today, but I can't imagine how they are going to diagnose this problem remotely. Has anyone any ideas about what could be causing this and how I can go about finding a solution?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I am rather hoping that an engineer will be able to confirm whether or not the wireless signal is being degraded by interference and if so, what might be the cause and/or the general direction it is coming from. I have carried out all the tests I can do on my own, such as changing channels, routers, etc and turning off any other electronic devices in my home that emit radio signals, but nothing has made a jot of difference. All I know is that until a couple of months or so I had a great wireless signal, but now I do not. I can't find the cause without the help of an expert (i.e., BT engineer) coming to check what is going on. If BT are only interested in providing a good signal by ethernet cable, then they shouldn't be adverting on the TV how great their HH3 is at distributing a wireless signal around the home if it only works like that some of the time or for some people.

  • Very slow wireless speed

The wireless speed on my 15" MBP is abysmally slow! I restarted the laptop, installed the new firmware patch, and restarted my router, but nothing seems to work. I am actually making this post from my Windows Laptop, which is connected to the same wireless network and does not have any problems.
Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions on how this can be fixed?

Yes, many, many people have these same problems. These URLs were posted on another thread almost a month ago...If you look closely through the dozens of threads, hundreds of posts and thousands of views, you will realize that you are not alone...and, it has nothing to do with your router or your security settings - it is simply your MacBook Pro. We've been 'suffering' with this problem for months now and our 'glorious' Apple has yet to acknowledge that there is even a problem. Apparently, it takes the NYC school system to put a hold on Apple orders to get a fix for this...to h__ with the thousands of single user MBP customers. After 28 years as a dedicated Apple user, I've decided not to buy the Air (even though I liked it and it doesn't have any issues). I'm in Paris using my daughter's Intel MacBook (which has its own problems - like waking up from a sleep) having left my MBP on shelf because it can't can't maintain a steady, decent wi-fi connection. I would have thought that the release of 10.5.3 would be released by now but no such luck.

  • E4200 Very Slow Windows 7 Wireless to attached HD speeds ( 800k/sec)

    I'm running 1.0.03.
    I have a Toshiba T400 running Win7 Professional.
I have a WD USB Drive connected to the router. (No problems transffering files to it directly from my laptop)
    Distance to router doesn't matter.
Right now, all I would like to do is transfer files [video] to the HD attached to the router so that they can be accessed by anyone - primaily by my PS3.
My wireless speeds range anywhere from 300k/sec to 800k/sec (usually somewhere in the middle - depending on settings I change).  My wired speeds range from 3-4MB/sec.  Both of which I find unacceptable considering even the theoretical speeds of GBe and USB 2.  I've tried disconnected everything but just my computer and the HD from the router as well with no change.
I've tried MTU, RD protocol disabling, firewall disabling, A/V disabling, Homegroup disabling, adjusting properties in the driver properties (for both wired and wirelss), looking for network driver updates...  Basically anything Google would throw at me with no luck.
Considering the number of posts I see - I'm guessing it's the router? Has anyone come up with a solution yet or are we stuck waiting for Firmware upgrades?
At this point, my max torrent speeds (2-2.5MB/sec) via wireless are faster than LAN transferring and that's just not right.  When I return home, I may just try "bypassing" Local Network  and transfer the files via Media FTP and see how that fares.
    Thanks.

Did you update the firmware to latest or was it pre-installed. If you have updated the firmware of the router recently then it is recommended to reset the router. Push the reset button on router for 30 seconds, turn off the router wait for 30 seconds and then power it on. After this process reconfigure the router. Power light should blink when you perform the reset process.
Then install the Cisco Connect Software. It will help you in configuring the Router.
But if you want to configure it manually then here are the links for configuring the according to the ISP setup…
