Slower After Reinstall

So I was having some problems with my iMovie exporting, so I decided to reinstall my entire MBP. After reinstalling I got all my software back onto the system, as well as fully updated. It's smoking fast again and I'm enjoying the speed boost. However, whenever I use iMovie or Audacity, it's choppy to control. Almost to the point that it's unusable.
For instance, before I reinstalled, I could slide my cursor left and right in a 5 second segment of a clip on iMovie and it would play seamlessly. Now it's choppy when it plays. So essentially if I'm seeking a specific spot, I have to wait a few seconds for the cursor to show up on the spot, then play the clip. I can't just slide my cursor to give me a quick play of the video.
With Audacity, when I'm recording the progress bar stalls and skips forward. While before reinstall, it was seamless.
Please help!! This is unbearable! >_<
Edit: Ugh, it's same for Photoshop CS4... I'm sooo mad now..

Any program that requires some power output seems to be limited. Going from work to opening menus, everything seems to run slower.
In Photoshop CS4, if I draw a line, it has trouble keeping up with the cursor. Almost a .5 second lag.
In iMovie if I'm working with a clip, I used to be able to run the cursor over it to preview a clip, now I have to leave the cursor in a spot, give it a second to position the play bar, then I am forced to play the clip, rather than just slide my cursor to preview the clip.
In Audacity, when recording, the progress bar can't even keep up with the recording process.
Everything that requires some power, seems to be sluggish since the reinstall.
Thanks again for any and all help.

  • Too slow after Yosemite upgrade [info]

    Hello fellows,
Right After upgrading to Yosemite I started facing an extremely delay almost in everything which I did not face at all before upgrading where they were times that I could use at the same time Chrome, Adobe Photoshop, Word, VMware Machine (Windows7) with insignificant delays:
On booting a white loading bar appears which takes too long before it loads OSX.
Almost in every action I take, I see the beachball spinning for too long.
Sometimes (most of the times) even typing delays a bit and the mouse buttons actions have a remarkable to extreme delay. (No battery or bluetooth problems)
I tried to take some actions like these ones: http://www.hightechdad.com/2014/10/23/13-tips-optimize-mac-yosemite-installation %20/  & http://osxdaily.com/2014/10/24/speed-up-os-x-yosemite-mac/
    I used CleanMyMac 2
The general feeling is like having a machine of 90's trying to run an OS designed in 10's.
More or less my daily usage of applications includes Chrome, Safari, Skype & Microsoft Office. Nothing too heavy most of the time.
I include EtreCheck report in case it might help:
    Problem description:

Arthur thank you for your response.
I strongly doubt that CleanMyMac 2 did something bad since I installed it only for this reason and that was today after a week of upgrade, I never had it or knew it before. Also could not do much since I had the demo edition.
I had the same background processes before upgrading (most of them I need them, except -occasionaly - Flip4mac,Paragon,Akamai)
Either way there was nothing new installed after upgrading that might caused the issues, so I will wait for other suggestions before doing something more dramatic like reinstalling the OSX from beginning.

  • Macbook Pro still running slow after reformat

So my Macbook pro, which is about 3-4 years old now, just started running slow after the latest update i did, whichever the latest one was. Possibly a security update or whatever it was. So i decided it was time to reformat and just clear out the stuff on my computer so i erased the HD and reinstalled Snow Leopard. After all that it still lags and is slow. Its slow on things like scrolling down a web page, or opening programs, or when i use expose, it isn't super smooth like it normally is.
My MBP has 4gb of ram and 2.2ghz. I have also tried to repair the disk permissions, but didnt seem to help drastically. Any suggestions?

    Hi there,
Have you applied all updates? Using Software Update or manually? Checked for EFI and SMC versions?
Don't you have any clue from Console logs?
Repair as T posted and bring back news and info about your Graphic Card.
    Good luck.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

  • Macbook Pro running slow will reinstalling OS X speed it up?

My MacBook Pro is running slow and i would like to reinstall OS X on it and was wondering if that would speed it up? I recently added 4gb of ram in replace of the 2gb of ram and that helped out but its still not as fast as when it was brand new.
    my questions are:
    1) would reinstalling OS X speed up my Macbook Pro?
    2) I currently have time machine on, after reinstalling OS X could I revert back to my most recent backup and have all my personal data on there minus all the junk that slowed down my Mac? or would it be the exact same thing as the current OS X now?
    3) what are some ways to speed up my Macbook Pro?
    my specs:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 3 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
    System Version: Mac OS X 10.6.2 (10C540)
    Kernel Version: Darwin 10.2.0
    Boot Volume: Macintosh HD
    Boot Mode: Normal

    1) would reinstalling OS X speed up my Macbook Pro?
Possibly, but it might be overkill, and it might fail to help altogether. Without knowing what the source of the problem is, it's impossible to say.
    2) I currently have time machine on, after reinstalling OS X could I revert back to my most recent backup and have all my personal data on there minus all the junk that slowed down my Mac?
You can certainly choose to restore only certain things from your backup, though without knowing what is slowing down your machine, it's hard to say what you should and shouldn't restore. I'd advise a bit more troubleshooting. Also, don't assume that one single backup is enough... things happen. Have at a minimum two backups, made with two separate programs. See my [Mac Backup Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/backups> for more information.
    3) what are some ways to speed up my Macbook Pro?
First, check your hard drive space. If you don't have about 10% (give or take) free, that could be the problem.
Second, open Activity Monitor and check the System Memory tab. If your page ins and your page outs are within an order of magnitude of one another, you may be pushing your machine harder than the RAM you have installed can support.
Also in Activity Monitor, look for a process that seems to always be using too much processor time. Look at the CPU tab and see what the % idle value is. When you're not doing anything particularly demanding, it should be a high number... mine's hovering between 92-97% with Mail, Safari, FileMaker Pro and Activity Monitor running, plus a couple third-party background processes (like Quicksilver).
Try repairing the hard drive (not permissions... that's not likely to help much). A slightly damaged hard drive can cause all kinds of problems.
Run [Apple Hardware Test|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509] to verify your hardware. Also, since you recently installed new RAM and AHT is not the best tool for checking RAM, try running [Rember|http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember> to test the RAM. (Note that I'm not 100% sure about Snow Leopard compatibility of Rember.)

  • IPads extremely slow after ios8 upgrade

    Hello,
I own an iPad 2 and an iPad3 retina. Both were working fine until I upgraded them to ios8.
Since then, both ipads have slowed down to a crawl. Surfing the web is *much* slower, the ipad seems to hang when you simply load a webpage. Also, the keyboard has become so slow that it lags behind the typing. I will be typing a sentence, and when I stop typing, the ipad could still have 10 characters in the keyboard buffer.
So up until last week, I had a couple of ipads that were a little bit older, but still working at an acceptable speed. Today, I have two ipads that are frustratingly slow to operate.
So the obvious thing to do would have been to downgrade back to ios7. But unfortunately, this doesn't work either. I get a message that ios7 is not compatible with my device.
So can somebody offer a solution, either a trick to downgrade to ios7, or another method to get my ipads back to their former performance.
BTW: same problem on my iphone 5, much slower as well, but here the speed is still acceptable.

iPad 2 and iOS 8.0.2 Problems
For all iPad 2 owners, this is an important solution for you! These problems result from long-term use, continuous upgrades, corrupted files and various glitches that happen over this long term use. You just need to get your iPad 2 back to FACTORY FRESH CONDITION to start out clean!
Here's one person's solution which will help a lot of iPad 2 users!

Re: IPAD2 very slow after IOS 8 upgradein response to pacoKAS
SOLVED:  IOS 8 Issues on iPad 2:
I just returned home from a visit to the Genius Bar. Like you and many others, when I upgraded my iPad 2 to IOS 8, it became practically unusable. It was VERY slow, lagged whenever trying to to do anything. Lots of screen freezes and apps spontaneously crashing. I was convinced that the processor on the iPad 2 just couldn't handle the new IOS and I went in to see about restoring to IOS 7.
Thankfully, I was hooked up with a very sharp guy at the bar. The problem is not with the OS, it is with it being an *upgraded* OS. He used the analogy of when you had an older Windows computer and how over time (and over upgrades), they just tended to get slower and slower because of all of the garbage that was carried forward in the upgrades. At those times (and if you've ever had a Windows computer, you get this), the only thing that would speed it up would be to wipe the machine and do a fresh install of the current OS and then reload your apps, and the viola, everything would be fast again. Well, it turns out that IOS can suffer the same problems.
THE FIX:  FIRST, be sure you have a current iCloud backup of your device.  Connect your iPad to a computer that has a clean fresh copy of IOS 8 on iTunes (this is best done with a computer other than the one that you sync your device to because you DO NOT want to restore it from a back up just yet). Ideally, if you do this at an Apple store you'll be assured of the right version there and someone to answer any questions you might have along the way. You then hold the power and home button down to hard-reset the device and continue to hold them down until it reboots into recovery mode. You then follow the instructions on the computer to reinstall the OS on the device (which wipes everything from it and then reinstalls a clean copy of it). Once this is done (which only takes about 15 minutes), your device will reboot and ask you to set it up. Answer the questions about language, location, etc. and continue until it asks you to log into your iTunes account. Once you do that, it will ask if you want to either 1) Set it up as a new device, 2) Restore from iCloud, or 3) Restore from iTunes. Choose (2), restore from iCloud. This will ensure that it brings down "clean" copies of all of your apps and preferences rather than the potentially corrupted ones that might reside in your iTunes backup. That's it! It will take a few hours depending on how much data and apps you have, but I am happy to report that my iPad 2 is now running IOS 8 and it's running as fast as it ever did when it was brand new!
To sum it up, this process 1) Wipes your device and the garbage causing your problems, 2) Loads a clean and bug-free version of IOS 8 to your device, and 3) restores your apps and data so that it looks just like it did before the wipe, with the exception that it works now!  :-)
Note also that by following this process you don't have to go through the painful and laborious process of reloading all of your apps, data and/or settings. iCloud takes care of all of that for you.

  • Satellite A100 - Internet becomes slower after 10 minutes

    Hi,
the Satellite A100 worked fine for some years, suddenly the internet became too slow after 10 min from start.
When the laptop is switched on the first time the internet works fine the first 10 min then becomes slower and slower till almost no packets are received but the connection does not drop completely.
Suspected spyware, rootkit, did a clean up, then installed from the disk recovery
Then tried the same. Uninstalled the LAN connection then reinstalled from the device manager, nothing.
I suspected the Ethernet port is failing. Then I used a D-Link usb-to-Ethernet adapter which is completely independent from the onboard Ethernet hardware. Nothing, same behaviour, works fine first then Firefox shows a time out
The modem, cable, internet are all fine since i tested them with one PC and another Fujitsu laptop (5 years old) and they all work fine. Even the D-Link works fine.
The Toshiba pc diagnostic tool says specifically "Network Fail", but what fails exactly?
    Any idea or similar experience?

    Hi Keany,
oh yes, quite complicated cause i tried many things. unluckily i don't have a WLAN, and i don't want to hack the neighbors' just for the test.
i am thinking even if the RJ port is defect, than the usb2ethernet from d-link should work fine as it's not dependent on the LAN Ethernet port at all. the relationship is a mystery ..
the DSL/Modem work fine with two other computers.
also tried with ubunto live CD, connection is there but networking almost dead
the d-link usb2erthernet looked ok with another fujitsu-siemens laptop.
i might order a pcmcia network card and try if it works.
thanks for thinking with me ..

  • ILife reinstall after reinstall of OS Lion

I bought a new macbook pro in December it came with OS Lion. Due to an error in setup I needed to reinstall the OS. Installing from the recover disk was too slow so I bought the OS and created a bootable install disk. Is there a way for me to reinstall the ilife programs that came preinstalled on my computer without needing to purchase them?

I know with my Mac Mini after reinstalling Lion using the Internet Recovery, I logged into the App Store with my Apple ID and under Purchases, my iLife apps (iMovie, GarageBand, iPhoto) were available to reinstall.
Look under Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X Lion in this link.

  • My mac become more slower after update to Mountainlion

My mac become more slower after update to Mountainlion
What shoudl I do? can you guys help me? BTW I have update my RAM to 8G
    Thank you

    What is your Mac?
What did you update from? 10.6 or 10.7?
If from 10.6 or your machine was at 10.5 at one time, it might be too old/slow for 10.8, you might want to revert to 10.6 again.
How to revert your Mac to Snow Leopard
What do you notice is slower than before? Like Internet or booting or loading programs or UI feel or what exactly?
If it's the Internet, then check this out
    WiFi, Internet problems, possible solutions
WiFi security issues, at home and WiFi hotspots
Now a fresh install of OS X usually does wonders, this would mean you will need to take acurate account of your installed programs, passwords, export bookmarks and backup all your data to a external storage drive. Keep the boot drive data below 50% filled ideally, (not much for you apprantly, just reduce 50GB of data)
    Most commonly used backup methods
Write down your AppleID and password to reinstall 10.8
When your sure, then hold command r boot into Recovery, use Disk Utility to Erase (middle selection) the Macintosh HD partition and wait, it's going to map off fialing sectors. When done quit and reinstall 10.8 fresh and install programs and files from backup into the same named accounts.

That should make things zippy again. Also a #12 OnyX cache cleaning routine
Step by Step to fix your Mac
Another method is this, it's a defragging/performance speed up step, you won't have to reset everything up again from scracth like a fresh install method does. But it requires paid software and a external drive, but makes a excellent bootable backup in the process that can save your behind one day.

  • Ipad running slow after iOS 8 upgrade

Ipad mini is running extremely slow after upgrading to iOS 8.  Can I go back to the old iOS?  The speed of the current mini is useless.

No, you cannot downgrade iOS. Many, many people have reported similar issues and have been helped. If you are having specific problems, search the forums for similar issues already asked and answered, or post your own support request.

  • Ipad 4 retina display is slow after iOS 8

ipad 4 retina display is slow after iOS 8, also upgrade to iOS 8.0.1 i think and safari is slow, animations are slow, and i can't restore it to iOS 7, there it was great. i mean its like my iphone 4 with iOS 7 in its best days. i hope no to get stuck again, i mean please let me go to the iOS 7)).
also I've got  message from apple that im not authorised to post this message, so if it goes online i think after many years of apple desktop and mobile i am done with it))).

Upgraded my ipad4 from ios6 to iOS 8 because the new WSJ app required it. HUGE MISTAKE!!!!!!! I can maybe understand some apps being slower but not Safari or Chrome. Apple must be throttling back the ipad4 processor even more with ios8 to force an upgrade to the next gen iPad whenever it arrives.
