Slower and slower each day
I noticed a problem, that both my macbook and macbook pro are getting slower over time. I can say right away that I am not littering the computers with additional useless software and so forth it is just happening overtime. For instance when I installed leopard on my MB on the release date it was almost as fast as tiger, now it is significantly slower (booting / starting apps). My MBP was very fast when I bough it, not is is slower also with booting up / starting apps.
What I am trying to understand is what is causing it. I have tried running the maintenance scripts, disk repair even defragment on the MB with no effect. I am guessing it's some kind of prefetch thing like with Vista when it "learns" what apps you use and tried to pre-load them (which ***** because now I run Vista on a SCSI drive 15k RPM and it still chokes). Does this thing exist in Leopard? How do I delete this data? Did you also notice this continuos slow-down?
What I am trying to understand is what's at fault here: the OS, file system or something else? Reinstalling the OS every 4-6 months is not acceptable for me.
Buy a backup drive if you don't have one you can use, buy SuperDuper or use Carbon Copy Cloner. Or use TimeMachine. I prefer the older method though still.
A backup and restore can do a lot to improve your system after all the patches, updates, and months of use. No need to reinstall, and I may never install the OS a second time. It does help.
If you have Disk Warrior, then you know to do preventative maintenance.
Applejack use to do a nice job cleaning non-user caches safely and I would use that before any OS updates. Would look for corrupt prefs and other things as well, but no longer works on Leopard. Onyx or Leopard Cache Cleaner might be acceptable alternatives.
SuperDuper will place files in an organized manner that tends to help the system run better.

Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the configuration that may be related to the problem.
Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out. Here's a brief summary: In each of two steps, you copy a line of text from this web page into a window in another application. You wait about a minute. Then you paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is copy; paste; paste again. That's all there is to it. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode. If the system is now running in safe mode and is bootable in normal mode, reboot as usual. If it only boots in safe mode, use that.
Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. They do nothing but produce human-readable output. However, you need to think carefully before running any program at the behest of a stranger on a public message board. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "Step 1 done" to appear below what you entered. The output of the command will beautomatically copied to the Clipboard. All you have to do is paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-Vagain. Please don't copy anything from the Terminal window. No typing is involved in this step.

This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
You can then quit Terminal. Please note:

My iMac is getting slower and slower
My Mac (3.2GHz Intel Core i3 4GB Memory) is about 4 years old and has been getting slower and slower over the last 5 or 6 months. An earlier post recommended using 'Etracheck' which I have done and attached the information below. I think I may have a Ram issue but I would be grateful for any comments.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

TIMES AS FAST AS THE FOX LATELY ON LOADING PAGES.For what it's worth, you posted this in 2011, and here in 2014 I am still having this same issue. Over the last two days, I have had to unlock my apple account 8 times. I didn't get any new devices. I haven't initiated a password reset. I didn't forget my password. I set up two factor authentication and have been able to do the unlocking with the key and using a code sent to one of my devices.
That all works.
It's this having to unlock my account every time I go to use any of my devices. And I have many: iMac, iPad, iPad2, iPad mini, iPhone 5s, iPod touch (daughter), and my old iPhone 4 being used as an ipod touch now. They are all synced, and all was working just fine.
I have initiated an incident with Apple (again) but I know they are just going to suggest I change my Apple ID. It's a simple one, and one that I am sure others think is theirs. I don't want to change it. I shouldn't have to. Apple should be able to tell me who is trying to use it, or at least from where.

My Mac Pro is getting slower and slower
I have an Mac Pro early 2009 version which is getting slower and slower. Startup time is about 3 minutes. How can I fix this?

Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutesafter the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as hang logs — they're very long and not helpful. -
Firefox getting slower and slower
firefox has been working great all of a sudden pages are taking longer and longer to load and unable to load search engines,in firefox or explorer. search engines work fine on second computer.
I am having the same problem as GTA_doum. Firefox gets slower and slower if left open for a day or two, and then when I restart Firefox it's fine for a day or two and then gets slower and slower. Help!

Playback progessively getitng slower and slower
When I first played with Premiere, it could read the footage from my canon T2i like a charm, no herky-jerky playback, no waiting for the "play" button to refresh everytime I shuttled (both in the source monitor and program). After using for only a couple months, the playback became impossible, to a point where today I deleted the program and reuploaded it. Now, it's back to working seamlessly! I don't want this to happen again, and I searched the forums to no avail, so I am asking ya'll. Before the delete, I trashed my prefs, tried everything I could google, nothing worked. I have a i5 but it's not my system, because the progrma works fine form the get go... but steadily gets slower and slower. I hope htis doesn't become another bloating forum, because I deleted everything and it was still slow. Help!!!

I assume since you said that you "trashed prefs" you are on a mac. There is another thing in my experience that will bring performance down to a crawl and that is media cache files and media cache database files. If you never go in and empty those it will (or at least on all the ppro stations I have worked on in the past) over time bring ppro to a crawl. Go into ppro's preferences go to media and there you will see media cache files, and media cache database. you will see the file path for each. Go through the finder to that folder and empty it. Ppro will have to make new ones for the active projects that you are working on, but it will get rid of all of the ones that are still there bogging down your system from old projects.
Also, if you have an external HDD, you can put project files on your system drive, and then media and scratches on your external. Not the best setup to have only 2 drives, but it might work for small lower res proj. You said it ran seamlessly before, so obviously it has worked for your particular workflow in the past.
Try that.....lemme know what ya come up with. -

I have reported the fault a number of times, but have been told 'we cannot find a fault', and line tests report there is no problem.
The quiet line test sounded ok, everything is plugged into the master socket with a filter.
This is the same as a problem i had before, which was fixed after posting on this forum.
Hopefully someone who can help will see this and be able to get it fixed.

Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal

Please help, my broadband has been getting slower and slower since early November. I have a Homehub 3.0 and have phoned the BT helpline on numerous occaisons and been told that my line is fine and that I'm getting 3.5mbps to the house. I've not been able to get the BT speed test to work on my Mac (each time I get as far as putting in my phone number, it asks if this is correct, I click OK and then nothing happens) so I've been using speedtest.net. At peak times (evenings and especially weekends I'm getting 0.4 - 0.6mbps and the rest of the time I'm getting 1 - 1.5mbps. Each time I phone BT I'm fobbed off with a different excuse: it's the phone extensions in my house (sorry I don't have any) / it's my Mac (which is brand new and went back to Apple where it happily ran at a whopping 25mpbs) / my cordless phone is too close (it's now the other side of the room and it's made no difference) / the main socket is worn out (I've got a brand new BT Openreach socket that's been checked and tested) / there's a network fault (they can't tell me what it is, but apparently it's been fixed - but hasn't made a difference). I have asked for my profile to be reset on numerous occasions (which worked for a friend on Sky and took about 2 minutes to do and fixed the problem) but BT refuse to do this for me. What else can I do??? Please help! I used to be able to download films in about an hour, they now time out after 8 hours, I haven't been able to download any of my magazine subscriptions (300-600mb files each time) or even stream a 20 second utube video without it pausing every 2 seconds. I thought my previous broadband provider was bad, but this is a lot worse.
Thanks john46. Yes I've been running off the test socket since November and yes I've tried the quiet line test with a corded phone and the line is fine. I've managed to borrow a windows based laptop to run the BT speed test which wouldn't work on my Mac and got the following results. I'm a bit dismayed that it says my maxiumum achievable speed is 2Mbps when I keep being told each time I phone that I should be getting a minimum of 2.8 and an average of 3.5, max 4Mbps. I'll go into the homehub settings in a mo and post those results. The good news is I suddenly have two fault reports with BT (no detail - just slow broadband) so maybe they have finally taken notice?

Prepared Statemet executeQuery() getting slower and slower

I have a servlet that do the following:
1.- Construct the where clause for a query with the data the user has sent.
2.- Get a connection from the pool.
3.- Load a temporary table with a select that uses the where clause created on the first step.
4.- Create a prepared statement as simple as "select * from temp_table where rownum < 500"
5.- While there is still data on the temporary table, loop
5.1.- Extract the information of the result set the Prepared Statemet executeQuery() returns.
5.2.- Delete the rows of the temporary table that had been read on the 5.1 step
5.3.- Check if there is more data
6.- Close the result set, statements, ...
The first runs of the loop are very fast, on the order of 500 ms. When the servlet has executed some times the loop, each run of the loop starts getting slower and slower, growing the time of the loop with each run.
Do anyone knows why the loop takes longer and longer with each run?

Mail is getting slower and slower...!
We are running an OS X 10.4 Server on a Mac Mini 1,7 GHz Intel Core Duo. We are running from a raided external drive with 2 mirrored 250 GB drives connected via Firewire.
After a couple of weeks we notice that getting mail is slower and slower. After another week it's too slow to use. Then we restart and it works ok again.
I first noticed this about a year ago, but it feels that it has been worse since then.
We have about 80 accounts on the server, with the heaviest load from spam of course.
Nothing else on the server seems slow.
Any idea where to start...? :-/I am now experiencing a slowdown when getting mail from the server.

Universe.applyOverload Method Run non-linearly slower and slower, that is, for the 10th user and restriction we add, this method runs 1 second, however, for the 80th user and restriction we add, this method runs 8 seconds.
Customers think it's a bug for our BOE Java SDK method, could I know why this method is non-linear, and any way to improve its running speed.

Speeds slowly got slower and slower
I have been with BT for about 2 months.
When I first singned up for bt the ip profile of my line was 4mbps and I would get speeds of aroudn 3 mbps.
Slowly, the service has been getting slower and slower, it is down to 1.8mbps and the ip profile of my line is 2mbps; what I would like to know is why is my speed getting slower? And also how to I acsess my router stats on BT homehub?

IP Profile for your line is - 2000 Kbpsthe speedtester results must be old ones as the down speed is different from your router stats.
your hub has been connected for almost 2 days, your noise margin is a bit high at 11.1 as normal about 6.
I would restart your hub tomorrow but just once - best time is normally about lunchtime 11-3 as you noise margin is normally at it's highest.
then post stats to see if there is any improvement

For the past week my bb speed has become slower and slower. The speed today Sunday 17th is a staggering 291kbs. How am I meant to remain sane using this. I have contacted bt and all they do in broken english is to tell me it will settle down and get better. Last month speed was fine but now OMG. With this bad service BT are open to losing me as I have a right now to cancell my contract due to the service.
Am I the only person putting up with this rubbish service (or lack of).

Image Reading getting slower and slower

I'm working on a tool that reads each pixel of an image, get the color, and finally make some statistics.
I multithread this tool, allowing it to read several images.

} I create a fixed thread pool with 6 threads. When I look a the log, I see that some threads stops working or get slower and slower, whereas there is a lot of files to treat.
Is there something I'm missing? where is my mistake?

Have you an idea?The one that immediately suggests itself to me is to offset everything by one; but an alternative (and probably better) might be to check the value beforehand. This should help you to find out why and when, and what you could do to fix it.
It also suggests to me that your design is heavily implementation-dependant.
