Slower and slower speeds on broadband.

For the past 4 weeks I've had what I thought was incredibly slow BB speed, 600Kbps at best through a HH2. After several calls to BT India (the usual try the master socket, reset the modem, we'll clear the line, we'll try our end etc, etc) I got an engineer on 22/08/11.
He tested the line at the socket (we have only one) and he was registering 8Mbps (amazing! I only seem to get 4-6Mbps which I thought was good). He thought it may be the modem and replaced the old one with a BT HH3. He then did a speed test at the computer using BT's speed checker and it showed 1.6Mbps. He said this should settle and improve in 48hrs time.
That evening things had improved, although not to pre problem speeds. The next day, horror of horrors my speed was down to 83Kbps  (yes eighty three) and it has been like this since (using BT's speed checker).
Just got off the phone to BT India and they have said that they will sort it out from their end (they say they can see the problem I'm having) and will call back Monday to see if things have improved.
I thought perhaps it is my set up as I hav emy computer hardwired into the router via a 20m ethernet cable so I got a lappy and hardwired it with a 2m ethernet cable. The result is the same  .
Not really sure what is going on if I'm getting 8meg at the phone socket, it's losing nearly all this speed passing through a filter, a phone lead 1.5m, the router and 2m of ethernet. The whole lot from filter to computer is now all new equipment.
I've even tried disconnecting the phone and Sky box phone lead from the filter with no improvement.
Am I missing something?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry I forgot to ask, can you please post your ADSL stats by following this direct link; http://192.168.1.254/index.cgi?active_page=9116 << it only works if you have a Home Hub 3 and remember to type your password in!
Can you also confirm if you're connected at the master socket or an extension? And what your type your master socket is according to this picture
As standard, the bell wire should be taken out of any master or extension socket as this can reduce the amount of interference your broadband can pick up and sometimes fixes the problem, see how to remove it here http://bit.ly/4LEKJg - have you removed it?
The reason your speed is low is because your IP profile is at rock bottom so it can go and slower luckily for you! Although you need to maintain a stable connection for 3-5 days to allow the profile to catch up.  If its still at 135kbps after that then we can get you in contact with people that can fix it, we need your ADSL stats to make sure you've been connected for enough time.
In response to the engineer I wouldn't know because it could be that the BT Home IT engineer has just been authorised to use the new Home Hub 3 which would sound more like the BT engineer rather than an Openreach, on the other hand it could be an Openreach thats just been authorised to use their new Infinity Modem as the old one overheated?

    I have reported the fault a number of times, but have been told 'we cannot find a fault', and line tests report there is no problem.
    The quiet line test sounded ok, everything is plugged into the master socket with a filter.
    This is the same as a problem i had before, which was fixed after posting on this forum.
    Hopefully someone who can help will see this and be able to get it fixed.
    Thanks

  • Slower and slower broadband

    Please help, my broadband has been getting slower and slower since early November.  I have a Homehub 3.0 and have phoned the BT helpline on numerous occaisons and been told that my line is fine and that I'm getting 3.5mbps to the house.  I've not been able to get the BT speed test to work on my Mac (each time I get as far as putting in my phone number, it asks if this is correct, I click OK and then nothing happens) so I've been using speedtest.net.  At peak times (evenings and especially weekends I'm getting 0.4 - 0.6mbps and the rest of the time I'm getting 1 - 1.5mbps.  Each time I phone BT I'm fobbed off with a different excuse: it's the phone extensions in my house (sorry I don't have any) / it's my Mac (which is brand new and went back to Apple where it happily ran at a whopping 25mpbs) / my cordless phone is too close (it's now the other side of the room and it's made no difference) / the main socket is worn out (I've got a brand new BT Openreach socket that's been checked and tested) / there's a network fault (they can't tell me what it is, but apparently it's been fixed - but hasn't made a difference).  I have asked for my profile to be reset on numerous occasions (which worked for a friend on Sky and took about 2 minutes to do and fixed the problem) but BT refuse to do this for me.  What else can I do???  Please help!  I used to be able to download films in about an hour, they now time out after 8 hours, I haven't been able to download any of my magazine subscriptions (300-600mb files each time) or even stream a 20 second utube video without it pausing every 2 seconds.  I thought my previous broadband provider was bad, but this is a lot worse.

    Thanks john46.  Yes I've been running off the test socket since November and yes I've tried the quiet line test with a corded phone and the line is fine.  I've managed to borrow a windows based laptop to run the BT speed test which wouldn't work on my Mac and got the following results.  I'm a bit dismayed that it says my maxiumum achievable speed is 2Mbps when I keep being told each time I phone that I should be getting a minimum of 2.8 and an average of 3.5, max 4Mbps.  I'll go into the homehub settings in a mo and post those results.  The good news is I suddenly have two fault reports with BT (no detail - just slow broadband) so maybe they have finally taken notice?

  • Broadband just getting slower and slower

    Hi.
    Our broadband has been getting slower and slower. (0.8 -0.9 mbps)
    I called BT in India on Thursday, who said that BT had 'upgraded my line but the homehub was too old to cope with it' and sent through a new home hub. The lady also told us that we should expect to see speeds of about 3mbps.
    We set up the new hub today and we're now getting download speeds of 0.35 mbps.
    When we called back BT in India, after a long conversation the person we spoke to came to the conclustion that the homehub they sent us was faulty and we'd receive a new one.
    I'm no engineer and I may be cynical, but I have no confidence that this will solve the issue.
    Apparently we are not entitled to to have an engineer because 'the trouble shooting protocol has not yet been concluded'.
    The lady was not able to tell us how many homehubs we'd have to receive to establish that this was the problem.
    Is there anything else I can do?

  • Is ther a way to speed up a Mac? Mine has gotten slower and slower over time.  When memory comes close to full would that have an effect on performance? Is there a way to determine unused programs/software to remove and free space?

    Is there a way to speed up a Mac (similar to de-fragging on a PC)? Mine has gotten slower and slower over time.
    When memory/disc comes close to full would that have an effect on performance? How should I determine what programs/software to remove and free space?

    Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
    If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Start with visits to:     OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
                                      The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
                                      The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
                                      The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
                                      Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
    Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
    Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
    OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
    OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
    An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
    Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:
              Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
              OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
              OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
              About file quarantine in OS X
    If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
    Troubleshooting Applications
    I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
    If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
    Basic Backup
    For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
        used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
        requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
        drive being backed up.
    Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
    Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
    Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
    Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
    Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
    Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
    Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
    Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
    Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
    Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • HT201541 Our Mac-Mini has gotten slower and slower. Is there a utility that would help speed it up?

    Our 4 plus year old Mac-Mini has gotten slower and slower.  Is there a utility that would help speed it up or is there another?

    Hello! I’ve offered the steps below to similar posts in the past and they helped out getting to the solution (or at least find the cause). I suggest them to you too in this case. It will take you about 30 minutes or less to do these, depending on how bad the problem on your Mac is.
    The goal here is to boot your Mac to the so-called Recovery partition where you’ll have a chance to repair the disk and the disk permissions using the Disk Utility and Password Utility. This might solve your issue and even if it doesn’t- it’s still a decent maintenance step to perform. These steps won’t erase your data or reinstall your Mac in any way if you follow instructions carefully.
    Here’s how:
    1/ Make sure your computer is completely shut down.
    2/ You’ll have to be quick next: Press the Mac’s power button. As soon as you either hear the loud chime, or see the display light up - usually after a second or 2 - on your keyboard press [cmd] + [r] Keep these keys on your keyboard pressed until you either see an Apple Logo with a loading bar or a spinning gear.
    After a few minutes, you’ll be presented with a Utilities screen. This is the Recovery partition. If this step is already giving you problems, try using a USB-keyboard. It doesn’t have to be an Apple-keyboard. If you have a Windows-tailored keyboard laying around, use the “Windows-flag” key in stead of the [cmd]-key and it should also work.
    3/ Choose Disk Utility and click [continue]
    Disk Utility will display your computer’s harddrive in the left column. The default name for it is “Macintosh HD” and is usually the second one from the top. Click on it and click on the [verify disk] button. This will check your “Macintosh HD” harddrive partition for errors. If found, click [repair disk]  unless you have a Fusion drive in your Mac and it says [fix] instead of [repair disk] please tell us before you continue! For a screenshot of what I mean, check this article from Apple: http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202574
    4/ Once done with the verifying or repairing of your “Macintosh HD” click [repair disk permissions]
    This will check your partition for permissions errors. A common myth about this feature is that it will fix all permissions issues on your Mac, which is not true, but it will fix most systemwide issues. Also, here is a list of error messages that you can safely ignore if they pop up:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203172
    5/ Lastly we shall do a permissions/Access Control List repair on specifically your user’s home folder with a somewhat hidden tool in the Recovery partition. Close Disk Utility and find the menu called “utilities” in the top left corner of your computer’s display. It’s in between the menus “edit” and “window” Don’t be confused with the menu called “os x utilities”
    Choose Terminal. A somewhat old-fashioned looking window will pop up, waiting for a text command from you. This is the Terminal.
    After the # type: resetpassword and press return. Note that there is no space between ‘reset’ and ‘password’
    What you’ll see next is an rectangular window that gives you the option to reset passwords. We are not going to that, however. Instead, click on “Macintosh HD” at the top. In the pull-down menu below that, choose your user's accountname. Skip all the rest and at the very bottom click the [reset]-button.
    A spinning gear will appear and may stay on for a second or several minutes. It’s hard to predict exactly how long.
    If you have multiple users on your Mac, I advise you to repeat this step for all your users.
    We’re ready to reboot your Mac now. Click on the Apple Menu and choose “startup disk” Choose to boot from “Macintosh HD” Please let us know if this solved your issue, or if the steps above did not work, or could not be performed for some reason.
    If they worked I suggest you do these steps everytime your Mac becomes slow.

  • Speeds slowly got slower and slower

    I have been with BT for about 2 months.
    When I first singned up for bt the ip profile of my line was 4mbps and I would get speeds of aroudn 3 mbps.
    Slowly, the service has been getting slower and slower, it is down to 1.8mbps and the ip profile of my line is 2mbps; what I would like to know is why is my speed getting slower? And also how to I acsess my router stats on BT homehub?
    Download speedachieved during the test was - 1802 Kbps
     For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 400-2000 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :3488 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
     IP Profile for your line is - 2000 Kbps

    the speedtester results must be old ones as the down speed is different from your router stats.
    your hub has been connected for almost 2 days, your noise margin is a bit high at 11.1 as normal about 6.
    I would restart your hub tomorrow but just once - best time is normally about lunchtime 11-3 as you noise margin is normally at it's highest.
    then post stats to see if there is any improvement

  • Slower and slower speed

    For the past week my bb speed has become slower and slower. The speed today Sunday 17th is a staggering 291kbs. How am I meant to remain sane using this. I have contacted bt and all they do in broken english is to tell me it will settle down and get better. Last month speed was fine but now OMG. With this bad service BT are open to losing me as I have a right now to cancell my contract due to the service.
    Am I the only person putting up with this rubbish service (or lack of).

    If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic  test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the configuration that may be related to the problem.
    Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out. Here's a brief summary: In each of two steps, you copy a line of text from this web page into a window in another application. You wait about a minute. Then you paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is copy; paste; paste again. That's all there is to it. Details follow.
    You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode. If the system is now running in safe mode and is bootable in normal mode, reboot as usual. If it only boots in safe mode, use that.
    Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. They do nothing but produce human-readable output. However, you need to think carefully before running any program at the behest of a stranger on a public message board. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
    The commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
    If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Step 1 should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PB=/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy; PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; PC () { o=$(grep [^[:blank:]] "$2"); PR "$1"; }; PF () { o=$($PB -c Print "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'); PR "$1"; }; PN () { [[ $o -eq 0 ]] || printf "\n%s: %s\n" "$1" $o; }; { system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType | sed '8!d;s/^ *//'; o=$(system_profiler SPDiagnosticsDataType | sed '5,6!d'); fgrep -q P <<< "$o" && o=; PR "POST"; o=$(( $(vm_stat | awk '/Pageo/{sub("\\.",""); print $2}')/256 )); [[ $o -gt 1024 ]] && printf "\nPageouts: %s MiB\n" $o; o=$(kextstat -kl | grep -v com\\.apple | cut -c53- | cut -d\< -f1); PR "Loaded extrinsic kernel extensions"; o=$(launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic user agents"; o=$(launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES); PR "Inserted libraries"; PC "cron configuration" /e*/cron*; o=$(crontab -l | grep [^[:blank:]]); PR "User cron tasks"; PC "Global launchd configuration" /e*/lau*; PC "Per-user launchd configuration" ~/.lau*; PF "Global login items" /L*/P*/loginw* Path; PF "Per-user login items" L*/P*/*loginit* Name; PF "Safari extensions" L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist Bundle | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; o=$(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); PN "Restricted user files"; cd; o=$(find -L /S*/L*/E* {,/}L*/{A*d,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail/Bu,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do ID=$($PB -c 'Print :CFBundleIdentifier' "$d/Info.plist") || ID=; ID=${ID:-No bundle ID}; egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|JMicron|microsoft\.MDI|print|SoftRAID" <<< $ID && printf '%s\n\t(%s)\n' "${d%/Contents}" "$ID"; done); PR "Extrinsic loadable bundles"; o=$(find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b "$1" | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v "$1"' {} {} \; -print); PR "Unsigned shared libraries"; o=$(system_profiler SPFontsDataType | egrep "Valid: N|Duplicate: Y" | wc -l); PN "Font problems"; for d in {,/}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}*; do o=$(ls -A "$d"); PR "$d"; done; } 2> /dev/null | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 1 done'
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
    The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "Step 1 done" to appear below what you entered. The output of the command will beautomatically copied to the Clipboard. All you have to do is paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-Vagain. Please don't copy anything from the Terminal window. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Remember that you must be logged in as an administrator for this step. Do as in Step 1 with this line:
    PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; { o=$(sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|calendarse|cups|dove|isc|ntp|post[fg]|x)/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic daemons"; o=$(sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook); PR "Login hook"; o=$(sudo crontab -l | grep [^[:blank:]]); PR "Root cron tasks"; o=$(syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail -n25 | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'); PR "Log check"; } 2>&- | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 2 done'
    This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    You can then quit Terminal. Please note:
    ☞ Steps 1 and 2 are all copy-and-paste — type only your login password when prompted.
    ☞ When you type your password, you won't see what you're typing.
    ☞ If you don’t have a password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.
    ☞ Step 2 might not produce any output, in which case the Clipboard will be empty. Step 1 will always produce something.
    ☞ The commands don't change anything, and merely running them will do neither good nor harm.
    ☞ Remember to post the output. It's already in the Clipboard. You don't have to copy it. Just paste into a reply
    ☞ If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output of either command, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    ☞ Don't post the contents of the Terminal window.
    ☞ Don't paste the output of Step 1 into the Terminal window. Paste it into a reply.

  • My MacBook Pro (2010) running Mountain Lion is getting slower and slower. How do I fix the orphan files?

    My 2010 Macbook pro is running slower and slower. I went to the Genius Bar about eight months ago, and they botted up from the disk, and let it go through and find what  its process to find and fix what I think were "orphan" files. I cannot remember what they did, but when they did it, the speed on my Macbook picked up considerably.
    I have since upgraded to Mountain Lion, but these problems do not seem related to that. My 500 GB HDD is about 80% full.

    First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
    If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
    Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
    Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
    Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
    Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
    Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
    Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
    Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
    Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
    Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
    If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
    Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
    Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
    When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
    Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
    Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Universe.applyOverload Method Run non-linearly slower and slower

    Universe.applyOverload Method Run non-linearly slower and slower, that is, for the 10th user and restriction we add, this method runs 1 second, however, for the 80th user and restriction we add, this method runs 8 seconds.
    Customers think it's a bug for our BOE Java SDK method, could I know why this method is non-linear, and any way to improve its running speed.
    The following is the code, for interator 80 times.
    while (iter.hasNext())
                        user = (rpt_users_t) iter.next();
                        IOverload overload = (IOverload) newObjs.add("Overload");
                        overload.setTitle(user.getBoezh().trim());
                        overload.setUniverse(universe.getID());
                        overload.setConnection(connectionID);
                        overload.getRestrictedRows().clear();
                        overload.getRestrictedRows().add("HZB0101_T","HZB0101_T.BRANCH_COMPANY_CODE='3090100' AND HZB0101_T.DEPARTMENT_CODE='"+ user.getBmdm() + "'");
                        overload.getRestrictedRows().add("BM_T","BM_T.DEPARTMENT_GROUP_CODE='" + user.getBmzdm().trim()+ "'");
                        infoStore.commit(newObjs);
                        // Commit to User
                        IInfoObject everyone = (IInfoObject) infoStore.query(
                                  "Select TOP 1 SI_ID " + " From CI_SYSTEMOBJECTS "+ " Where SI_KIND='User' " + " And SI_NAME='"+ user.getBoezh().trim() + "'").get(0);
                        int everyoneID = everyone.getID();
                        universe.applyOverload(overload, everyoneID, true);
                        //infoStore.commit(objs);
                        System.out.println(user.getBoezh() + " loading...");

    When invoking applyOverload multiple times, it's O(N^2) if you're granting rights to a User or UserGroup.
    When granting, the applyOverload method retrieves all Overloads applied to the Universe and walks across each one,  granting the identified ones and removing rights from others.
    Sincerely,

    my imac is getting slower and slower and has probems connecting to internet. Any idea on how to restore initial performance? thanks

    What year, screen size, CPU speed and amount of RAM installed?
    What version of OS X is your iMac running?
    How full is your Mac's hard drive?
    How many applications do you run simultaneously in the background while working in another application?
    Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X.
    Do you run any "crapware" like Mackeeper or any other type of so called hard drive "cleaning" apps?

  • My computer is getting slower and slower. Is there a standard utility I can run to clean things up?

    My Imac is getting slower and slower. Is there a standard utility I can run that will clean things up? I am an old PC guy but changed to Mac about 5 years ago. PC had a program called DeFrag. Is there anything like that for the Mac?  Thanks, Rick

    Rick,
    A Mac that loses performance can be caused by many many things. Forget about Defrag, that isn't the problem and is something done by PC users in the 1990s. The more common things to check are RAM (do you have enough) and Login Items. You can easily check if you need a RAM upgrade by operating your computer as you normally do and opening Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and click the System Memory tab. In the lower left you will see:
    Free
    Wired
    Active
    Inactive
    Used
    If the amount of Free RAM is in the vicinity of 500MB or less your system needs more RAM.
    To check the Login Items navigate to System Preferences - Accounts - Login Items. If you seen applications in the list that you don't need loading when you login simply highlight them and click the - symbol at the bottom of the box to remove them.
    Finally I would recommend your visit and read 25 Ways to Speed Up Your Mac.

  • My overall system is becoming slower and slower...how can I clean up?

    I am fairly new to Apple and IMac.  I have had my system for almost a year and the speed is becoming slower and slower.  With my pc, I routinely cleaned up the cache, etc., How do I clean up my IMac to increase my speed?

    As a first step, boot in safe mode and see whether the system is still slow. Some things won't work in safe mode, but you should be able to test.
    Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
    By the way, there's a good chance someone will tell you to "repair permissions." That's a very popular ritual, which happens to be a complete waste of time. All it does is spew bogus error messages that cause confusion.

  • Make a clip go slower and slower

    Hi,
    Is it possible to make a clip go slower and slower and eventually stop, as the movie timeline goes on playing? I want my blurred movie background to go down in tempo and then stop so that I can animate some explaining text on the movie layer above.
    Is it possible? I'm thinking maybe with a little magic and some keyframes;-)
    Best regards Ricki

    FCE doesn't have the powerful Time Remap function available in FCP.
    However, if you have FCE 3.5, you could try this free filter Time Remap that emulates Time Remap in FCE.
    The simplest way to achieve what you want is to use the default settings (Mode = Variable Speed) and to keyframe the Speed control, from a 100% value to a 0% value: you can also "smooth" the keyframes to smooth the acceleration.
    A more complex way is to use Mode = Time Remap Position and to keyframe the Position control...
