Slower connection with WPA-PSK

Hi, I'm new to Apple and the whole Apple discussion board.
I recently converted to Mac and have one of the new 20" Intel iMacs. I looked through the available discussions but none of them quite addressed my issue:
I recently received a new 2Wire router from ATT-Yahoo DSL. I have it connected by ethernet cable directly to my old PC, and my Mac connects wirelessly via Airport.
For security reasons, I tried to switch my encryption from WEP (which was the default) to WPA (WPA-PSK is what actually showed up as the option on the 2wire site), and when I did, the wireless connection was dramatically slower. So slow that I couldn't stream music from sites like rhapsody. When I switched back to the WEP default code, the problem seemed to correct itself.
1) Is there something I needed to adjust as well, either on the Mac or on the 2wire site, when I changed the encryption to WPA, to avoid the slow-down?
2) How great is the security advantage of WPA over WEP? I've configured the settings so that my wireless network doesn't appear automatically on other people's computers.
I'm new to the wireless game as well. Thanks for anybody's help to the above.

Hi
The same happened on my old notebook.
I was not able to establish the WLan connection for longer than 1min with WPA encryption.
I have downloaded the newest Atheros driver and updated everything.
Everything works fine with WEP but not WPA.
Then I have disabled the Windows own configuration option and use the Atheros client utility. Now everything works fine!
I would recommend using the Intel Proset utility and check all possible settings!

My iPhone connects fine along with all of my other laptops etc. I have the router set with WPA-PSK [TKIP] security and an access list. I've confirmed the mac address is included on that list and that the password is correct. Under choses netwrok I select the network and it just goes into a spin. I have tried removing the password and the access list settings and it still will not complete the connection to the router thus no internet access. The routers firmware is also up to date. This thing worked fine before this update and I've already tried to restore from backup. Any ideas or is the wifi nic bad in this thing with the new apple firmware update? Any fix?

Thanks Bob, I don't know why but it all of a sudden worked a few days later. It's a mystery but at least problem solved.

I have a Satellite A100-003 notebook with preinstalled Windows Vista.
When I try connect to my router with WPA-PSK (TKIP) I have error:
Wireless authentication failed because of a timeout.
My notebook and router configurated correctly!! I installed new intel drivers for 3945ABG chip.
    WPA2-PSK and WEP work fine.

  • Very slow connection with Mifi 4510L??

I'm hoping someone here can give some guidance. I am having very slow connection with the 4510L we just got. Via test on speedtest.net I'm seeing download speed of .17 MBPS at times it was so slow the test was not completing. I normally have 1 or 2 bars on the mifi unit and have seen up to 3 at times. I drove into town and see the same range (1 to 3 bars). I have yet to see the 4G light come on except for prior to activation (would light solid green at times) since activating I have only seen the violet light for 3G.
Verizon advertises full service both around our city (Richmond, VA) and at my more remote location in Hanover. I have been through the recommended resets and nothing seems to improve the connection speed. Could the unit itself be defective? Also, I've noticed when I go to a location website it thinks I am in Pennsylvania when I am in Virginia. Could the Mifi be trying to connect to a signal in that location for some reason (was refurbished device)
Thanks for any help you can offer,
    Brian

I was having problems but upgrading to 2.28 seems to have helped me in addition to a few other changes I made based on this review of the 4510L
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/4500/novatel-wireless-mifi-4510l-review-the-best-4g-lte-wifi-hotspot/4
    1) "selecting WPA2 Personal/PSK (AES)"
    2) "manually selecting a channel (instead of Auto) fixes almost all the instability problems"
(I'm not sure if it actually worked as the diagnostics always shows channel 0 no matter what I picked.  I did try a couple before one - or the myriad of other things I tried - seemed to make a difference - at least for now - fingers crossed)
    3) "allowing for one to select between each network mode manually, so you can force 4G LTE, EVDO, 1xRTT, or all of the above. This is incredibly useful if you’re right at the cutoff for 4G LTE SINR"  (that's WWAN Preferred Mode LTE only for me)
    4) I also changed my 802.11 Mode to just one mode that works on both computers at my house
    5) I am also careful to turn it off when I am done with it and take it off the charger for the night as well.
It is my only internet service due to my semiremote location (no cable etc) and when I first got it as a replacement for my dependable 2200 I was about to pull all my hair out.  I was "forced" into it because due to antenna issues on a local tower that supplies my 3G signal my 2200 wasn't even able to load my gmail account.  Verizon very helpful on that - call us if its still an issue in a "few weeks"!  However, when I inquired about the antenna's effect on a 4G signal, an intelligent tech was able to tell me that it was not the tower I would be getting a 4G signal off of - odd but I didn't question that possibility.
It runs very very warm but I suspect having it on the charger and using it almost all day is part of that.  At first I was wondering if heat was part of the problem - going so far as to have it sitting on an ice pack to test that theory.  Of course then I had to wonder if maybe I was freezing it -lol.  I am careful to turn it off when I am done with it and take it off the charger for the night as well.
I've been on it most of the day and it seems to be behaving well - so fingers crossed

I tried this! Somebody suggested it in another thread. It did not work, sadly.

  • Can't Connect To WPA-PSK/AES

I've read through dozens of posts here and on other sites, but still can't figure this out.
At home, I have a D-Link DI-634M wireless router. We have two laptops (Toshiba and IBM) that connect to it just fine, but I can't get my new iPhone 3G to connect. The Wireless Settings page on the router looks like this:
    SSID: SomethingLikeThis
    Channel: Auto Channel Select enabled
    Super G Mode: Disabled
    Transmission Rate: Auto
    802.11g Only Mode: Disabled
    SSID Broadcast: Disabled
    Security Mode: WPA-PSK
    WPA Mode: WPA
    Cipher Type: AES
Passphrase: Looks something like this sentence, for a total of 63 characters.
When I try to add the network to my iPhone, I get the error that it can't connect. But, in the network settings, it will now show the SSID, with the encryption icon and the signal strength meter. I select it, get prompted for the password again, but still can't connect.
Just checked the logs on the router, and I can see an INFO message that says "Wireless system with MAC address nnnnnnnnnnnnn associated", showing the MAC address of my iPhone. I don't see anything after that to indicate any error with that device.
I upgraded the firmware in the router to the latest release (Feb/2008). I've tried changing the Cipher Type from AES to TKIP, and even "TKIP and AES".
    What am I missing here?
    Thanks!

Sorry, forgot to mention that when I turn off encryption it works fine. But, even though I don't broadcast my SSID, I'd never run a wireless router without at least some basic encryption. Just tried changing the password to not have spaces, and now it works fine. That's strange, since I didn't have any problems with any other wireless devices connecting when the password did have spaces.
    Thanks a million!!!!

  • How can I restrict who connects with WPA?

Our current network is using WPA with having the users get authenticated via the windows domain. Anyone with a domain login can use the same credentials to log in to the wireless network.
Is there a way to keep some users from authenticating to the wireless network?
I was not sure if the windows domain had an option to set who can and cannot access the wireless.
What I am trying to prevent is a user installing a wireless card into their laptop, getting the SSID from another user and the accessing the wireless network with permission.

If your company standardizes on a given wireless NIC, you might be able to institute a MAC filter.
If you're using WPA with server-based authentication, you can usually install a policy (i.e., with Microsoft IAS, RRAS, and the user account, you can disable wireless logins by checking / unchecking the "Dial-in" attribute).
Are you using ACS, Microsoft, or freeRADIUS (or other RADIUS server)?
WPA is more of an encrytion thing, which authentication scheme are you using (WPA-PSK, LEAP, PEAP, EAP-TLS, EAP-TTLS, MD5 ...)?
IF you're using Microsoft-based authentication platforms, Microsoft has some pretty good white papers / step-by-step info on setting up their systems.
    Good Luck

  • Smart Phone O2, Dopod, iPaq can't authen with WPA-PSK(TKIP)

I used Cisco AP 1100 and WPA-PSK (TKIP) My notebook can authenticated but smart phone can't it. I see log at AP "authentication failed" What happen?

    Hello,
I have similar problem. We have wireless handhelds same firmware version however different types of wireless cards. The old type has Cisco AIronet 350 and the new ones have Wistron 802.11G. The new ones can authenticate successfully using WPA + TKIP. The old ones don't authenticate and I get authentication failure on the access point log.
I appreciate if anybody can give me some ideas.
Remark: I connected my laptop and directly connects as well. It is only the old type of handhelds having the Cisco Aironet 350.
All handhelds have windows CE 5.0 and latest drivers and firmware installed.
    Thanks,

  • N91 Podcast client over WLAN with WPA-PSK - downlo...

    Hi all,
I'm using a N91 (2.20.008) and the Nokia Podcast Client (1.00.3) to download podcasts via my home network (router Zyxel P-2602HW-D1A). N91 can fine see my network but the connection is unreliable on the N91. I have several laptops and it works fine for them.
What happens is that the podcast client will start to update all podcasts, but nothing happens all the small "circles" just hang. If I try to download one podcast it will sometimes work, but mostly the Podcast client will only download 2% and then hang. Each time I have to drop the WLAN connection and reestablish it to get the next 2%.
So for me it seems that the client waits and waits for something that doesn't happen or some weird loop is taking place.
Is there any fix for this?
    N91: 2.20.008
    Nokia Podcast Client: 1.00.3
    Router: Zyxel P-2602HW-D1A
    WLAN Encryption: WPA-PSK

    Ivan,
Ok, that makes sense. So yes, as far as I know, the logs are not super helpful when it comes to MAC filtering pass/fail, but you will find generic messages related to MAC filter events. Filtering for MAC is a layer 2 association-level event, so if a client does not pass, you will see an SNMP log message like:
Sun Mar 18 20:23:52 2012          Client Association Failure: MACAddress: Base Radio MAC: Slot: 0 User Name:unknown IP Addr: unknown Reason:Unspecified ReasonCode: 1
If they pass, then you will see:
Sun Mar 18 20:29:05 2012          Client Association: Client MAC: Base Radio MAC : Slot: 0 User Name:unknown IP Addr: unknown
If you are not seeing these messages, make sure you have SNMP trap controls turned on for Client association and association failure events:
I have done some more testing today and I am not running into the issues that you are seeing. In my setup, named clients can associate and unlisted clients are failing to associate. At this point I would recommend that you try upgrading your code to 7.0.220.0 or higher. My testing was done on 7.0.220.0.

  • Very slow connection with db2 ver 9.1 client on win2000

I have been having difficulty in diagnosing why when after installing db2 9.1 fp5  client on our wind2000 box which has Crystal Embedded 10 RAS ( service pack 6 ) running, the reports  that i am invoking using the Java SDK ( we have an  online J2ee web application ) are very slow. I have narrowed the problem area down to where the java sdk is trying to set the table location.
Using the db2 7.1 client since 2005, we have not had this issue. We must upgrade to ver 9.1 db2 since this is being done at  an enterprise level. I upgraded our test server to 9.1 and noticed this slowness. With the 7.1 db2 client and the same RAS server, the reports take about 2 or 3 seconds but with the 9.1 client the reports take about 40+ seconds each and this is always as the setTableLocation method. Once is goes through this, the rest runs fine.
I have tested this with a local db2 datbase on windows, a remote db2 database 3000 miles away ( same as with what the 71 client runs against) and it is consistently the same response time.
I did notice that if I ran my java online on the same server as the RAS server, the response time is great. This only seems to be happenning when the java app is not on the same server as the RAS server.
I also have a java stub that does not run in a web container. in this case, with the same code and the same databases, whether i am local or remote from the crystal server, the response time is 40+ seconds to connect.
The .rpt files are developed via Crystal Reports 10 and we develop on a local database and we modify the database credentials throught the SDK as we deploy upto production. I have also tried this with the same database we developed with and the same 40+ seconds connect time.
All of these scenarios work fine with the 7.1 client.
so it seems there is some connection issue with the 9.1 client only.
    Need help urgently.

I have exactly the same issue.

  • C4380 not connecting with WPA 2 key

I have a C4380 that will not accept WPA key when I try to change network settings. Error message says "Error while saving setting to device".
This printer previously worked with 2 WEP networks. I am now using WPA 2. There is not any network problems because all laptops and Office Jet 6000 operate on network fine. I have tried to change network settings on Vista desktop and 2 XP laptops with different antivirus installed on them. I reinstalled twice and still get same failure. I even tried setting network default settings on printer still will not accept key. Is there anyway to update firmware on printer? It seems to me that it is not compatable with WPA 2. Any help is greatly appreciated. Also printer works fine on usb and network diagnostics shows pass on first 3 items fail on SSID found & not run on last 4 items. The SSID is found when I run change network settings from CD and it allows me to the security settings.

Well, I was afraid of that ...  WEP doesn't work well with WPS (which is unfortunate).
You can change the router to use WPS but let's not do that right now.  Instead, let's try to connect the printer using a different method.
Let's restore the printer's network configuration to its default setting.  Press the scan button, then Wireless Menu, then Wireless Settings
Scroll down until you see Restore Network Defaults.  Press OK, then Yes
Press Enable Wireless.  The blue LED should turn on.
From one of your wireless laptops, connect to the network named hpsetup
Open the printer's internal web page by browsing to its IP address.  You can get the printer's URL by printing the Network Configuration page
Select the green Networking tab on the printer's web page.
    Select Wireless (802.11)
    Press the Start Wizard button.
Follow the prompts to select your network, connect and enter your WEP key.
When you reach the last step and press the Finish button, the printer will disconnect from your laptop as it connects to your home network.
Reconnect the laptop to your home network.  Print out the printer's Network Configuration page and note the URL.  Browse to it and verify that you can see the printer's home page.
At this point, install the SW on your laptops.  You won't need the USB cable anymore to setup the printer.

I DID THIS BUT NOW HPSETUP IS STILL SHOWING IN NETWORK LIST. CAN I REMOVE THIS SOME HOW?

  • Very slow connection with WRT54GS.

It appeared out of nowhere 2 days ago... slow connection for websites, very high latency for online games to a point where it's unplayable... i tried to reset my router, change channel(i'm usually at channel 6), moving the antennas... nothing. when i reset, the speed is fine for a few minutes, but after a while it's back to slow connection. My router isn't even 1 year old yet and it's already broken? I can't believe that, there must be some solution. Anyone can help please?

The latest firmware is 1.02.0 if you have wrt54gs v6 & V5 if yout got v7 the latest firmware is 7.50.0
First step you need to check is your direct connection from the modem.
    1. hardwire your computer straight to the modem using a cat 5 ethernet cable, if your download speed and your internet connection is slow, the problem is with the modem or with your ISP so you need to call your ISP and double check your connection.
If your speed if fine straight to the modem then its with the router.
2.Hardwire your computer straight to the router if your speed is fine when its hardwired through the router, then the problem is with your wireless card or the wireless settings of the router.
In US the standard channel is 11,6 and 1. So play around with the channel. If its still doesnt work then access the setup page of your router click on the WIRELESS tab click on ADVANCE WIRELESS SETTINGS sub tab. set beacon interval to 50, RTS and Fragmentation Threshold to 2304.
After that turn off the modem the router and your computer for 1min. After a minute turn on the modem first after lights of your modem are steady, turn on the router and lastly turn on your computer, check your connection if its fine then its fixed if not call linksys tech support.
I hope this would help. Good Luck!

  • Loosing and slow connection with Airport Extreme

Hi. Before I start, I hope there are some who suffer the same problem as me.
First of all, I have a problem with my MacBook and Airport Extreme. The Network I created with Airport is getting really slow or unconnected with my MacBook. So I tried to reset both the modem and Airport. Actually, it kinda works, however this problem occurs later.
First time I thought it was the problem with uTorrent that I didn't use uTorrent anymore but it still has a problem.
Because of this **** problem, I have to reset my modem and Airport Extreme several times a day and it really stressed me out. Embarrasingly, I don't even know what the problem is. is ti the problem with My macBook? AirPort Extreme? Modem? No idea..
    I need a help...
P.S. Modem seems working fine since the ethernet is working fine. maybe problem of Airport or MacBook. I think I should go to the Genius Bar but I am afraid that 'Genius' is going to just check once and say 'It has no problem.'

I too am having very slow connection speed issues with two of my white macbooks, both running 10.6.2, same airport extreme wireless adapter (built in). The strange thing is, these two macbooks came in a macbook 5-pack, and the 3 other laptops all have excellent speed. Nothing different has been done with these 2 laptops - all were updated (albeit the 2 were much slower to download the update), with nothing new installed otherwise...
There were some Macbooks that had an issue with the screws holding their internal AirPort cards in place loosening, resulting in noise and lower signal levels from the antennas.
You may want to try taking one of the affected Macbooks to a local Apple Store and see if you experience the same issues on their in-store network.

  • Itunes slow connection with internet

    HELP please someone!
I recently purchased an iphone 4 and so had to get itunes!
I never had the need for it before but I'm quite impressed with it, sorts my music well and works quicker than I thought it would on Windows.
There is 1 issue though, the connection with the internet seem terrible!
I can't stream the 30sec clips of songs in the itunes store! If I download a song it takes at least half an hour! =(
My connection works fine for everything else, normally around 3Mb/sec download speed, often more though! So don't have any issues with anything else!
If I download a song from another source, often takes a matter of a few mins, if not seconds. But itunes seems so slow on the internet!
Really quick to use, just slow as **** on the net!
    Any solutions you can suggest?
I've got a Comodo firewall and Mcafee anti-virus and I've added itunes to their safe lists! I can't see what's slowing it up!
    HELP PLEASE!
    Thanks in advance folks!

How about the built-in Windows firewall - is that also active?
As a test if this was my PC, I'd turn off all firewalls and security to see if it made any difference. You can always turn it back on after the test.
Also I'd try closing itunes in the main account, logging into the windows guest account and see if it is slow there, too.

  • Slow connection with wireless, normal when wired

I've looked at the previous posts regarding this problem but I don't know how to do any of the recommended procedures. I can connect to the internet wirelessly with no problem but my wireless connection has become very slow all of a sudden (speakeasy speed test is 150-300 kbps). If I connect with a cable instead (wired connection) I get my great Comcast digital cable download speed on Speakeasy which is 15-16 Mbps! Previous posts mention looking at what the "RWIN" is set at and changing it but I'm not comfortable messing around with such basic Windows XP settings when I don't know how to reset back to the default if it doesn't work. Is there any patch from Linksys for fixing this or another easy way to fix it? Thanks! Kenshu

First thing is download firmware from www.linksys.com/download, and update it to latest version. Now follow this from a wired computer : Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser's address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name. Here enable MTU and set size to 1350. Go to security tab, and disable block anonymous internet requests. Change channel to 11. Go to advanced wireless settings and here change beacon interval to 50, fragmentation threshold to 2306, and RTS threshold to 2307, DTIM to 2. Now reboot modem and router.
