Slower Network Transfer Speeds with .7

Since upgrading to .7, I've noticed slow transfer speeds. For example, when transferring one large file, I get 11MB/sec on average. When transferring a bunch of smaller files, I get about 1 - 1.5MB/sec. I remember is being faster in .6
This is transferring files from my Mac Pro to my Time Capsule, using Gigabit Ethernet.
Can someone let me know what speeds you are getting when transffering a large file from a Mac Pro to a TC and also a bunch of small files from a Mac Pro to a Time Capsule. (or any NAS drive)
I used Activity Monitor to test the speeds. Thanks.

Does your PC have a FireWire port? you can use IP over FireWire for better throughput than the wired ethernet.
You can't use link aggregation in this case since it requires multiple interfaces of the same type (e.g. two gigabit ethernet cards), but you cannot mix media such as AirPort and Ethernet.
The alternative would be to install a gigabit ethernet card in your PC. You'd at least then get gigabit ethernet speed between the two devices which is also a step up.

  • Slow fileshare transfer speeds with Lion Server

I'm running Lion Server on a Mac Mini and using SMB to share files between the server and both Windows and Mac machines. I can't figure out why I can only get 2 Mb/s transfer speeds between the server and the other machines. I'm quite certain I'm not limited by my network and the disk write speeds clearly exceed 2 Mb/s. Any suggestions for boosting this speed or is this an actual limit of SMB or Lion Server?

Have a similar issue on a Macbook Pro mi 2010 : since the 10.7.3 update, Samba file sharing (to access a FreeBsd server over the LAN) is extremely slow. I mean I can't work normally since the update (3 weeks).
I've reported the bug to Apple. I think it is a bug limited to some machine version (because other mac in the office do not have the issue)

  • [solved] Intel 5300 slow network transfer speed

    Heya,
I'm having trouble with my WiFi card Intel 5300 AGN and i hope you can help me.
It's the transfer speed in linux that bugs me. While I get 9 MB/s in Windows I can't for the life of me get more than 2.5 MB/s transfer rate in linux. And this is only if I use NFS4 and turn off the wifi power saving feature. Samba/CIFS gives me transfer speeds of no more than 0.4 MB/s.
The problem has to be somewhere in my linux software/configuration. But where?
I don't have much experience with WiFi configuration in Linux so mine should be pretty vanilla. No manual change of frequencies, channels and the likes. I simply use netcfg to connect and sometimes iwconfig to toggle the power saving feature.
Here's what iwconfig shows me right now while copying a big file:
    wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:"bett"
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: 00:14:D1:C7:43:C4
    Bit Rate=243 Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm
    Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
    Encryption key:off
    Power Management:off
    Link Quality=61/70 Signal level=-49 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:11922 Invalid misc:2 Missed beacon:0
As you can see, power management is disabled. The link quality is very good and the bit rate is at 243 Mbps (which should give me about 15 MBps right?). Yet the transfer rate is only 2 MBps, sometimes dropping as low as 0.7 MBps, sometimes spiking to 4.5 MBps for a second or two.
What can I do to improve my network speed?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for the reply zvxy.
I'm running the most current from [core], version 2.6.37.5-1.
Disabling the N mode improved transfer rates for CIFS/SMB shares. They are the same as with NFS now which is around 2.5 MB/s. Transfer speed for NFS stayed the same.
I'll try the kernel from [testing] and report back later.
// I've tested 2.6.38.2-1 a little bit now and as long as i don't disable wireless N i get transfer rates of up to 12 MB/s with NFS4. That's more than enough for me and i hope it stays that way. The downside is that transfer rate for CIFS is only 1 MB/s.
If i disable wireless n mode NFS transfer rates drop to ~2.8 MB/s while CIFS transfer rates go up to ~2.4 MB/s.
Guess I'll just have to stick with NFS (not that i don't mind but it's already thrown me some "stale" error messages with the new kernel ... i can't seem to catch a break ).
I'll consider this issue solved. Thanks!

  • V. Slow transfer speeds with new dual band Airport Extreme

I have a new Airport Extreme (late 2009, dual band, full 'N' spec) which I am using to replace an older Airport Extreme (early 2008, 5Ghz, 'draft' N).
I have a USB disk attached and was interested in benchmarking the transfer speed of the new Extreme, compared to the previous version. The results are puzzling / alarming.
Shown below are transfer speeds (file copied to the attached USB drive) under different connection standards (2.4Ghz / 5Ghz & a/b/g/n)
    'Old' Airport Extreme
    5Ghz - 'draft' N : ~5-7 Mb/sec
    'New' Airport Extreme
    2.4Ghz - b/g : ~3-5 Mb/sec
    5.0Ghz - a : ~3-7 Mb/sec
    5.0Ghz - N : ~200 Kb/sec
Hence transfer speeds appear to collapse when I try to make use of the 'N' spec with the latest Extreme. I have tried altering items such as - wide channels (on / off), interference robustness (on / off), 5Ghz channel (manual, instead of auto), with no upside.
I seem to be at the point of concluding that either
    1. I have a 'broken' Airport Extreme
    2. The WiFi card on my early 2008 iMac (which implements I guess the 'draft' N standard) is 'incompatible' with new the Airport Extreme under a 'N' connection.
    Any thoughts ?

Since all devices in my wireless network are capable of latest 802.11n protocol, I really do not need older and slower 802.11a/b/g protocols. To achieve above 200 Mbit/sec, 5GHz band with wide channel option turned on is really necessary. Thus I really wish I can turn off the 2.4GHz radio band (seems Apple has set this band as default) of my new dual band Airport Extreme to avoid unwanted bandwidth degradation. Unfortunately this is not possible with radio mode setting in Airport Utility.
The best I can do to force connection with 5GHz radio band (with quite consistent result) is as follows:
On Airport Extreme through [Airport Utility>Wireless] :
    Radio Mode: 802.11n only (5Ghz) - 802.11b/g/n
    More Options>Wireless Network Option>Transmit Power: 100%
More Options>Wireless Network Option>Use Wide Channels: checked
More Options>Wireless Network Option>5 GHz Network Name:
checked and same network name with extra suffix "(5 GHz)"
On 27" iMac through [System Preferences>Network>AirPort>Advanced>AirPort]:
    Preferred Networks:
Create only one profile in Preferred Networks for the above network name with suffix "(5GHz)"
Uncheck the option [Remember networks this computer has joined] to ensure there is only one profile under Preferred Networks .
Once all above settings are done, restart Airport Extreme in Airport Utility. Your computer should connect wirelessly to the base station through 5GHz band after booting most of the time. Even when it is not occasionally, simply go to the Airport icon in main menu bar and click on the network name with suffix "(5GHz)" in dropped-down list to connect manually. With all these settings, I have achieved 300 Mbit/sec bandwidth on my iMac most of the time for fast Time Machine backup.
How I wish feature for better radio mode control by end user will be implemented in next update of Airport Utility. Apple should trust end user's brain better than artificial intelligence (or ignorance ?) in wireless network implementation. Wireless traffic between the two radio bands and among various wireless devices should be segregated specifically in Airport Utility by end users whenever dual band Airport base stations are in use.

  • Very slow transfer speeds with external hard drives through Firewire and US

    Hi All,
My external drives transfer very slowly on my MacPro. I've been searching for answers and have turned up very little. Apple support suggested I post my issue here. Just to make a note, I measured my disk speeds with both AJA System Test and copying files between drives and reading the Disk Activity in Activity Monitor.
I have 3 external drives, all MyBook Premium or Professional, 1x 500GB, 1x 1TB and 2x 1TB in RAID 0. I had them on Firewire 400 and the RAID 0 2TB one on Firewire 800. My transfers on FW were all around 24MB/sec on all drives (much less than what I should be getting with FW400). I then read somewhere that the FW bus on the MacPro uses the slowest speed connected for all FW connections. So I unplugged everything but the FW800 Raid 0 drive and my transfer rate jumped to 40-60MB/sec. This is much better, but still about half or so of what I expect it should be producing from an external RAID 0 setup.
To keep my FW800 backup drive faster, I've plugged the other two into USB2.0. The transfer speeds on both drives are now hideous, around 10-15MB/sec. This is so slow, but I'm not sure what to try to fix my speeds.
The HD's in the external drives are all 7200rpm, and all should be transferring at a higher rate. Do you have any suggestions or ideas? Ideally I'd like to get everything transferring at rates they should be transferring at, but I'll settle with my current FW800 speed of 40-60MB/sec if I can get my other two drives transferring at a non-snail pace.
Is this a common issue? I can't believe I'm the only one plugging multiple external hard drives into their Mac Pro. I hope someone has a fix or solution for this. I'm all ears!
    Thanks in advance.

Hi Kappy, thanks for the information.
So I rejigged my setup a tad. My RAID 0 is still FW800, the second drive is back on FW400 on the back port, and the third is USB 2.0 on the back as well.
It's interesting to note that I saw the FW800 taking a bandwidth hit if the FW400 drives was being read/written to. For example, if I was averaging 50-60MB/sec on the FW800 drives and copy something large to the FW400 drive, each drive averages out to about 30/MB second, roughly half the FW800 speed I was getting. The USB while the slowest didn't cause any slowness on the FW drives.
Here are my Xbench results. These results are from each drive being benchmarked individually with no other drives being tested at the same time.

  • After security update INTEL Macs network transfer speed slows

MBP C2D and iMac CD transfer speed between them is close to "b" speed after the update. I tried transfer to my G4 that has a G card and it was same speed for both INTEL Macs. Grabbed another G4 laptop with G card and the transfer speeds between those two were at "g" speeds. All 4 machines connected using Apple Express wireless router.
Changed AE router to 5.5 and higher multicast. No affect. Changed channels to 11 and others and back to Automatic, no change in speed.
Cleaned out cache on all INTEL Macs, same "b" speed. Despite all these adjustments the PB G4 wit the "g" cards continued to transfer at "g" speeds, whil the INTEL Macs are stuck at "b" speeds.
I suppose I can do Archive and Install on the MBP and not apply the latest security patch to see if that may be it. But I'm hoping someone has done this already and post their results. If not I'll try it in a bit.

  • Very slow network transfer (AFP, thunderbolt, nas, gigabit, lan, lion)

    Hi,
When copying large files (100GB) from my macbook air to my Qnap NAS the transfer is very slow (100kB/s). It becomes immediately much faster (10MB/s) when I lock my session.
The MBA is connected via the gigabit port of the thundrbold display and a gigabit switch to the gigabit port of the NAS.
There is negligible other network activity shown when monitoring NAS or MBA bandwith usage.
So what can limit bandwith of a mac while in unlocked session?
Is the a bug in thunderbolt display dramtically deminishing bandwith when used? Bandwitdth is already high when locked and display shows login screen. It does not need to fall asleep.
    Thx

I want to thank you for your help but I think I have to give up. I've been trying for days to get the MBP just to recognise the NFS share. I've tried adding a server in Finder with no luck. I tried Directory Utility with full R/W access setup on NAS, then tried accessing root NAS folder, then the specific share folders, then with specific user enabled on the specific share folders but whatever I try I get nothing. I've changed my local username and password and UID on the Mac to exactly the same one I use for my NAS but it still won't find it and none of the command line options that people suggest do anything at all. I've tried SMB and AFP but they're both sluggish and nowhere near the performance of XP on the same hardware. For an OS that supposedly 'Just Works' I've had a very complicated, tedious and fruitless experience (pun intended). Maybe it's just me because others seem to report no problems accessing their NFS shares or transferring at high speeds with AFP or even SMB but I've had no luck whatsoever. Very frustrating indeed.
Again, sincere thanks for your time and I'll tag the post as answered because for all intents and purposes you answered my question very well. Unfortunately, this Mac just doesn't like me and I don't think I'll be spending money on one anytime soon.

  • Slow Network transfer

I've just added a second Time Capsule to my home network as my first one is now pretty full. Its extended my network fine and I've renamed the TimeCapsule fine. I left my Macbook pro to drop a 170Gb TimeMachine backup onto the new Time Capsule overnight. And it completed in 7 ish hours. So I know the access is ok.
I have a number of files I don't back up as part of Time Machine (iso images) and VMWare images of my dev PCs. I was planning on copying these over onto the shared storage on the Time Capsule but the file transfer rate is shockingly slow, even for a single file. Just starting the copy of a single file (they are pretty big at a couple of Gb each) takes a couple of minutes and stopping it takes a good 5 minutes to close the progress dialog.
A single 0.7Gb file was listed as taking 39 hours. Now I'm not sure what the data rate is but its obviously pretty slow. This is all via a wired 10Gb connection using a 3Com switch as the hub.
Now copying the same file from the same Mac to the old Time Capsule completes in under a minute. So what have I done wrong to end up with this rather odd situation? Has anyone got any pointers as to what I might look at or poke/prod to sort this out?
    many thanks
    Steve

I left my Macbook pro to drop a 170Gb TimeMachine backup onto the new Time Capsule overnight. And it completed in 7 ish hours. So I know the access is ok.
That is slow if that is over 10GB ethernet. The TC should do around 60GB/hr for backup.. so something isn't right even with what is apparently ok.
A single 0.7Gb file was listed as taking 39 hours.
    That is very bad.
I know it is a pain.. but I want you to pull the New TC out of the network.
Plug it directly into the computer by ethernet.
Do a factory reset on it. Very little else.. you are doing a file copy in full isolation from the network.
Make sure you are copying the file to new directory you create under the root..
Tell us the speed of transfer. (Also check that ethernet connected at gigabit.. you will see connect speed in network preferences or ifconfig in a terminal) And you can use activity monitor to check the file transfer speed.
Super slow.. take the TC back.. it is faulty. There seems to be a lot of it going around.

  • Slow file transfer speed on OS X / Windows LAN

I have a Mac Mini with OS X Server (Yosemite) on a network of 5 Windows 7 PCs, the server hosts FileMaker Server 13 and also some files in a shared folder.
I notice the file transfer speed when copying a file from one PC up to the server's shared folder is around 350KB/second, is this an acceptable speed? how could I improve it?
    Thanks for your help.

I'm having the same issues.. I recorded a bunch of video with the 4s.. now i'm copying them to my windows 7 pc with it peaking out at 900KB/sec.  My corsair thumb drive in the same port gets 5-10x this speed.  any luck getting faster speeds?

  • SuperDrive slow Data Transfer Speeds

I have several home movies DVDs I would like to loadback onto my mid-2011 27" iMac but it is taking for ever to complete the transfer. One DVD disk takes 6 hours because the transfer speed is crawling.  I read up onthis and info says my HL-DT-STDVDRW GA32N (FirmwareVersion KE06) is made by HLDS and they have implemented riplock which slows the data speed way down to preserve SuperDrive life expectancy anddecrease noise level. How can I disable this riplock to restore the data speed. I bought this fast/expensive machine and the SuperDrive of all things is slowing medown. Completely unacceptable.

I was having a problem ripping store bought CD's to ITunes and opened a case with Apple for suspected hardware issue. Turns out the problem was Norton AntiVirus by Symantec which was blocking my external drives. Even though the CD is internal it was killing it. Once I shut off Norton everthing started working.
The way I came to figure out it was a Software and not hardware issue was that the Superdrive worked perfectly under Windows 7 inside of VMWare Fusiion.
If you have any sort of AntiVirus, try shutting and down and using the Superdrive.
My machine is the same , late 2011 with Firmware KE06

  • Slow write transfer speed on shared xsan folder - osx 10.8.3

    XSAN3 - OS X 10.8.3
I am getting slow transfer speeds when saving to a shared xsan folder using the smb protocol.
Writes are about 15 MB/s.  Reads are about 85 MB/s.
Some transfers to the shared xsan folder will fail and it doesn't matter if I am reading or writing.
If I share a folder from the system drive, the speeds are much higher and I do not have any transfer failures.
Writes are about 76 MB/s.  Reads are about 99 MB/s.
If I transfer files using the file server I am sharing from, I get write speeds close to 90 MB/s to the xsan volume.
    Using the AJA Test Tool:
Maximum write speeds to the xsan volume are about 600 MB/s
Maximum read speeds from the xsan volume are bout 700 MB/s
The file server and metadata controllers are Mac Pro 5.1 Mid 2012.
Xsan Storage is the Vtrak EX30.
It is configured according to documentation supplied by apple and promise.
All Xsan clients are dual nic with nic 1 configured for public and nic 2 configured for the private.
I have checked the XSAN admin tool and all metadata IPs appear correct for all clients,
thery are all using the private IP.

What template did you use for the creation of the SAN?  Recall, if you did a video template but you are transferring generic office files, your performance will suffer.  This is due to the block allocation size calculations.  The SAN may be tailored for specific types of writes.  If you are doing something outside of the expectation, you may experience negative performance.

  • Network transfer speeds

    Hi Guys,
I've got a wired ethernet network set up here at home.
I'm using an Airport extreme which is connected directly to my modem.
From there, I have the Airport connected to a brand new Gigabit switch.
    All my devices: 2 imacs, 2 apple tv's, a d-link Gigabit NAS.
For some reason, I can't get transfer speeds over 41.3 MB/sec
I've tried this on all devices.  Reset everything.
Is this speed typical of Gigabit?  I thought it would be much much faster.
Not sure how to diagnose the issue.  Screen shot of network activity below....
    Any suggestions?

  • Mpower slow LAN transfer speeds.

    Hi, I have an issue with the Realtek NIC. When I transfer a file from my harddisk to my NAS the transfer speed is very low (  +/- 100kb/s, see attachment ). This is what I have tried so far;
    - Installed the latest Realtek drivers from their website
    - Changed the Large Send Offload adapter settings.
    - Disabled all security related software.
With my previous PC I used to get +/- 10 mb/s when transferring a file to my NAS using exactly the same setup (cable, router ect). Does anyone know a fix for this issue?

I have the same  problem. I tried to transfer a game on the pc of my friend and the transfer speed was  10kb/s

  • Slow USB transfer speed when iTunes is running

    hello everyone,
today I was trying to transfer a bunch bunch of files from my NAS to a portable USB 3 hard drive.
the transfer speed was 18 to 20 mbytes/s... quite slow for this device.
after investigation the problem was found that when iTunes (11.0.1) is NOT running the tranfer speed goes up to 90+ mbytes/s
anyone has an idea on how to solve the problem?

The only testing that could be performed prior to resetting the AirPort would be to make throughput performance measurements ... but, at best, these would only stand to confirm the slow transfer speeds that you are seeing.
However, if you do want to make some quantitative measurements, one easy to use (& free) utility is: AJA System Test.

  • Slow network transfer on 10.5.8

Hello we have about a dozen machines running 10.5.8 and we have one windows file server running Grouplogic Extreme Z IP. The connection type is AFP.  On one of the machines, although it appears to work well, it tranfers files very slow from the server. It takes 5 minutes to transfer a 2mb file. The machine is a dual processor Mac Pro with Gig ethernet. All the other machines work perfectly and transfer files very fast.
When I transfer files with SMB from another windows server  machine, the transfer is normal. I would love to think its the server but the other 11 machines work fine and they are all same hardware and software. All machines are joined to our Active Directory system.
I tried almost all the troubleshooting I know, there are no errors on the switch, no dropped packets. Verified with Netowk Utility. I tried to unbing and rebing the machine to AD.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

That's correct the backup drive has 2 partitions one for the MBP and one for the powermac. I thought of that also, the drive is brand new and when the problem started I repartitioned the drive and switched the MBP and the PM partitions with no effect.
