Slower startup with Lion

After i have updated to Lion the startup takes significantly more time. On my one-week-old iMac 2.5 Quad Core i5 between 30 and 40 secs while it used to startup in about 15 to 20 secs with 10.6.x
I've doublechecked with the local Apple Store: 30 to 40 secs there too. So this is not a single desk issue.
This is somewhat frustrating as I recently changed from a MacBook Pro to an iMac for better startup performance. Too soon this gain has been gone! If i had known that Lion would startup significantly slower i might have not updated.
I wonder if anyone has played with the installation yet. Does it increase startup speed significantly to dump the system - format the hard drive - install 10.6.x - update to 10.7 - and ### this for the difference ### last but not least reinstall applications and restore my content with Time Machine?
Thank you.

I thought I'd share my experiments in this thread.
So, after upgrading from SL to Lion, it became very slow to startup and even slower to shutdown. Reading around the forums I learnt that some older applications, not compatible with Lion, were causing the shut down issues. I cleaned up a bunch of apps (using AppCleaner) and isolated the issue: HP IO Trap Monitor. This is what's causing the shutdown stalls on my system. And if I force this process to be terminated the computer shutsdown almost instantly.
You can find what causes yours to stall on shutdown by opening Finder and looking for MacintoshHD/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports. Inside this folder you'll find several files, some of them named with DATE.ShutdownSTALL
Just sort it out by date and check which one is the most recent and start cleaning up.
I ended up having to remove the HP files from the Library/StartupItems folder. I didn't erased them, I simply moved these files onto my HP Applications folder. I might need them in case I need to print something (not sure though)
Abou the longer startup time, I finally had the courage to do a clean install.
So, by parts:
Right after I installed Lion, my startup time grew longer. After the cleanup I mentioned above, it became better, stil between 50-60 seconds since the boot chime to the login screen.
With the clean install it came down to 30 seconds. And by clean install I mean creating a bootable Lion USB drive (there's many tutorials on how to do it) booting MB Pro from the USB drive, using the disk utility to erase the MacintoshHD partition and do a fresh install of Lion. NOTE: I did this twice because at first I didn't use the disk utility to erase the partition and it simply installed it over the current install.
Result: 30 second startup from the chime to login screen.
Then I used the migration assistant and imported all my Applications from my Time Machine backup. Restarted the computer and startup was still 30 seconds. Was unable to import my user account (and all its files, folders and settings) because the one account I was doing it from had the same name and Lion said I can't replace the one that is already open and told me to create a new one and do it from there.
I created a new user account, and from the new user account I imported all my documents, settings and Home folders (300GB+), thus replacing the user account by my old one.
My startup time went back up to 50-60 seconds.
It seems that this longer startup time is either a consequence of less hard drive space (162GB free at the time) or some problem contained within my personal files and/or extra folders added to my home directory, as the startup time was not changed by the applications I had previously imported.
What are your thoughts on this? How big are your Home directories? How much free hard drive space do you have?
And just a detail, the longer startup times have NOTHING to do with the resuming of the applications from the previous session. This only makes it "slower" AFTER you enter your password and login, as you have to wait for everything to start again.

  • Unbelievable slow startup with OS 10.7 Lion

    The Problem
Out of curiosity I decided to time the amazing slow startup of Lion after several weeks of use.  It took a full minute from the chime sound until the welcome screen showed with the list of users.  Then, from the time I pressed the return key with my user password until the first app (iChat) was able to open any operational window, it took another full minute and 34 seconds.  If we include the 17 seconds that Lion took to let me click on my user and enter my password (because it doesn't matter how quick you do it, Lion is not going to take it anytime soon), we are talking about nearly three minutes from beginning to the end.
    Clarification # 1
I'm not loaded with all those login items that tend to slow down the startup to load on the menu bar.  Nothing out of the normal (Dropbox, Evernote, unDock), the ones most seasoned Apple users use.  I have used Macs since 1989 and consider myself an Intermediate knowledge user, so don't tell me some of the things that I already know after 22 years.  I know this is not normal and wonder if everybody else using Lion has conformed to such slowness.
    Clarification # 2
Another necesary clarification: I DO NOT check the option to "Reopen windows when logging back in".  Depending on the number of open apps or windows you have when shutting down or logging out, that can easily double or triple the startup waiting time!  What an annoying feature!  What was Apple thinking when checking that box by default?  Are they assuming that most of us want to wait more than 3 minutes to have our Mac up and running?  How many users are cursing Apple's engineers names for doing this everytime they shutdown or startup their Macs?
    Clarification # 3
My hard drive is pretty much in order.  I use Drive Genius to keep my blocks in order with 150Gb (out of 500Gb) available and mostly in one single block to be available for virtual memory and temporary files.  So, hard drive slowness is not the problem.  As you can see, I've done my homework, including repairing permissions, etc.
    Final reflexion
If Windows 8 is promising to have a 10-second startup (and beta tryouts confirm that it does so), maybe Apple should consider reviewing making me loose roughly over 15 hours every year waiting for my Mac to startup...

I have the new MacBook Pro with Lion pre-installed. I did a fresh install of CS4 and didn't have any problems with installation. I do fairly basic editing in Photoshop so I tested the following:
    - Opening .jpg and .NEF (raw) files
    - Opening several photos at once
    - Editing a photo in the .NEF interface
    - Creating new layers
    - Flattening layers
    - Adding text
    - Rotating the image
    - Cropping
    - Changing saturation
    - Applying unsharp mask
    - Clone Stamp tool
    - Applying the Liquify filter
    - Selecting a color
    - Using the eye dropper tool
    - Paintbrush tool
    - Burn tool
    - Adjusting levels, curves, brightness, contrast
    - Changing the image size
    - Copying and pasting from one image to another
    - Creating an Action
    - Opening Adobe Bridge and performing a Batch operation using the Action I created
    - Saving as .psd and .jpg
    - Opening the files on another machine to see if the files seemed ok
I admit that this is not a thorough testing of the software, but I was able to accomplish these basic tasks on several photos I used. The only problem I experienced was when I tried dragging my Background layer onto the New Layer button. This caused the program to freeeze. When I pressed the New Layer button, it was fine. Considering this is about the only functions I ever use in Photoshop, I don't see a reason not to stick with this version. Obviously, I don't know if you would have problems doing more complicated things.

  • Slow startup for lion

    Hello,
After I upgraded to lion I noticed that the startup took about 1 minuet and 15 seconds. Before the upgrade, it only took about 30 to 40 seconds. Anyone experencing the same problem? Any solutions?
    Thanks!

Startup is definitely slower, I don't have exact time comparisons though.  I read about clearing caches to solve this, so I used Onyx to clean almost all of them.  There was, I think, a small improvement.  At the first boot screen, the rotating "dial" I used to count to about 16 revolutions, now it is in the 30s.  At last boot, after the cache clearing, the boot time was approximately 1 minute 30 seconds-an approximation.  But I think it is noticibly slower than Snow Leopard.  Another suggested the "Reopen Windows" or applications on boot takes time, others suggested quitting all open applications before rebooting.  That sounds redundant since the OS quits all programs before rebooting.  I know all boot times will differ depending on what Login items one has set to start on boot up, some are by choice some are required by some applications.
I will continue to look through these discussions to see if I can find a cure, if there is one, for the slower boot up.
I do have to say, I believe the system is quicker after the Onyx cleaning.  And I guess system performance is more important than boot up time.
Another thing I was wondering.  During the boot sequence, in Lion there are more than one splash screen with the Apple logo in the middle.  The first with the spinning wheel, then another gray screen with the Apple logo appears further into the boot sequence.  What's that all about?  Not being a programmer it almost seems like someone forgot to remove the old dimmer gray one from Snow Leopard.  IMHO the first gray screen (the one with the spinning wheel) is much brighter than SL.
I am very happy with Lion and its features.  If slow boot is what it is I can live with it.  My MacBook Pro i7 (early 2011) with 8 GB RAM should be a good platform to boot as quick as possible..
Thanks for reading - and any possible advice.

  • Slow Mac with Lion update

I have a late 2008 MacBook Pro.  I recently updated to Lion, and now it's running slow.  Keep getting pinwheel and only running a few apps like Safari and iPhoto at once.  Should I go back to Snow Leopard and how do I do that?

Thank you! I've to check it, if I'm back at home.
As already described at the following thread from gmka (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4324046?start=60&tstart=0) , I think it's necessary to enable Spotlight again after installing the supplemental update. Is that correct?

Is it normal for my MacBook to load up slower after upgrading to Lion OS? (Takes about a minute)

Heres a screen shot from mine.

  • MacBook Pro runs slow after Mountain Lion installation

I have a mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro with 2.2g Ghz processor, 2 GB of RAM and 160 GB encrypted disc.
After installing Mountain Lion and the recent upgrade OS X 10.8.1 (12B19), the system runs noticibly slower than with Lion, which ran slower than the previous version.  This shows up in opening and closing programs, rate that drop down windows appear when something is clicked on the task bar,  rate that windows open and close, rate that the dock comes up and the icons expand when the curser is moved over them, etc.
Due to my type of work, I need to encrypt the disc.  I know this is costing me some speed.  I unencrypted the disc and it ran noticably faster, and when I re-encrypted it seemed to run faster than before unencrptying and re-encripting.  I have repaired permissions and verified the disk OK.
Somewhere in the build up to Mountain Lion release I thought I read where 4 GB of ram was recomended for Mountain Lion, allthough now the specs indicate 2 GB is OK.  In activity monitor, the pie chart for system memory seems to always remain less than about 40% of active memory (yellow).
What recomendations does the community have to increase the speed of operations back to when this system was new?
    Dave

I was having the exact same problem.  My MacBook Pro was seriously close to unusable how slow it was.  On a different thread, someone recommended I reset the VRAM and PVRAM (not sure about those initials).  Shut down computer.  Rebooted while holding down Command-Option-P-R all at the same time until I heard the second startup tone and then released.  I noticed an improvement in performance immediately.

  • How much ram to run fcpx with lion?

I have a macpro  with a xeon graphics card . It is 8 core and qith a 1 trb hd disk and 16gb of ram. I made a clean install for lion meaning I reformatted and then instlled snow leopard then lion. then I installed fcpx among other porgrams including fcpstudio3 .
FCPX runs fine until I get to about the middle of the edit where i am working with a speech which is a whole piece of about 15 minutes . It is one of the pieces in an event folder.
My question is do I have enough ram? or is there another reason for the beach ball to keep in inturupting the edit?

Hi again... can the beach ball that inturpts the program be because of the rendering in the back ground of a long clip (or event) I feel that while I am editing more effects or transistions the amount of ram I have might not be enough to render faster. I can't sell this macpro... I just got it and in my country, that is a lot of money! Do you think the additional 16gb of ram will do? by the way I also threw out all the preference files of FCPX from the preference folder. I'm not sure yet but it looks like it is helping correct the problem. Also my unit does now slow down with lion os and fcpx. maybe it is because of the ATI 5770. Hope that helps others who have a slow down problem. I had that at the start and so I formatted the main hd and then loaded everything else.
Advice pls on the additional ram

  • Slow startup Lion 10.7.3

I've read many threads, here and on other sites, that deal with slow startups. Most of the "answers" seem to be regarding login items, restored windows/apps, etc. But nothing that matches my sequence of startup issues. (If I've missed an answer somewhere, please forgive me...it's difficult to read everything on the internet)
When I power on, the chime sounds within a couple of seconds (normal). But then I get a blank white screen that can last anywhere from 45 seconds to 2 minutes. Eventually, I get the Apple logo and spinny gizmo. Once those appear, startup takes about 10 seconds. I restore no windows or apps and have no login items. Does anyone have some idea for what causes the long delay before the logo appears?
    My Mac is a Mid 2011, 21-inch iMac (bought new 12/2011), 2.8 GHz i7 running 10.7.3, 12 GB mem; 256 SSD main drive has 133 G free, second drive is a 1 T with 872 G free.
    Thanks,
    Michael

    Hi ds
I tried most of the items in the list you referred me to. Nothing found any problems (except the SMART utility errors mentioned earlier).
    Main items:
    - booted from install drive and did all repairs and permission fixes (no problems)
    - reset PRAM
    - the "D" key Apple diagostics (no problems found)
The only thing I did not do was reinstall the OS. It seems to me the delay happens before Lion is loaded. Once loaded, it runs fantastic. It's just that pesky pause before the actual OS loads. I really hope it's not a (partially?) bad SSD.
    Thanks for helping.

  • Why is startup so slow after mountain lion upgrade?!

please someone help i regret upgrading it to mountain lion now. it was a brand new macbook pro i just bought not even a month ago and i upgraded it 2 weeks after and it takes over 1min to startup ever since... it wasnt like that before it was upgraded. please someone help. i don't want to have to do another installation of the mountain lion because il have to pay for it for another download. and i don't know and not confident enough to do a clean install anyway, whatever that is. what's going on exactly? is it a bug that'll get fixed with an upcoming mountain-lion update? it's not a matter of using space i don't think because it's a brand new laptop and has hardly anything on it. the only different thing was the upgrade and the startup was so obviously slow i know it has to be that. please someone help me fix the slow startup..

    NicholasLiban -
When you use the Lion restore as described, it does a fresh install on the hard drive that you can select at the beginning of the process.  This provides a complete install of the very latest version of Lion, including the recovery partition.  The drive that you choose for the installation destination winds up like what you would have on a brand new computer from Apple.

  • Startup problem with Lion OS 10.7.3

Just recently, I've been experiencing a startup problem with Lion. I don't usually have any issues running my Mac, so I'm at a loss why this is happening now.
I have an Intel Mac Pro running 10.7.3. I usually leaving my Mac running all the time and only restart when the need arises. In addition to being my main computer, this mac alsocontrols a MacMini that serves as a music server thru screen sharing.
This past weekend, I restarted my Mac and could not get past the grey screen. The mac chimes, the apple logo appears with the spinning gear, the blue screen briefly appears, but instead of progressing to the desktop it reverts to the grey screen with a repeating cycle of the spinning gear appearing (spins for a while, stops, disappears, reppears spinning, stops, disappears, over and over) - never progressing beyond that stage.
I decided to reinstall the system and things have been fine for the past few days. Today, restarting again resulting in the same problem.
I've tried several things without success. I disconnected all peripherals, reset the PRAM/SMC, ran Disk Utility from a install volume and ran repair and permissions (no problems reported). Tried safe mode startup - a progress bar appeared but never fully progressed and could not get to the desktop.
Recent changes included updating the OS to 10.7.3 and Adobe Photoshop CS5.5 - no recent hardware changes. No bluetooth devices connected.
    Any thoughts? Thanks -

    Thanks -
I've reinstalled the OS today and am back up and running.
But, since this is twice this has happened within the past week, I'm worried about might be causing this issue - besides bad luck. My Mac is usually rock solid - can't remember the last time I've had to reinstall the OS in the past few generations of OS X.

  • I have iMac and need a good photo editing program to use.  Reviews say aperture runs really slow with Lion, any suggestions?

I need a program where I can remove objects and touch up dead grass, etc.

Reviews say Aperture runs really slow with Lion, any suggestions?
To add on to Corky02 answer:
The recent Aperture release AP 3.3.x is very efficient, both on Lion and Mountain Lion. But you need a decent hardware to support it. The older Macs will have problems with the storage and CPU requirements. For good performance on large raw images plenty of RAM is important, at least 4GB, but 8GB would be much better, and your library should be on a fast disk, preferably on an internal drive. And don't let the system drive get too full.
Many reports about Aperture being slow are due to putting the Aperture library onto slow disks or acessing  the original image files over the network, insufficient RAM, or corrupted or  ill-designedAperture databases.
Aperture excels at all kinds of image processing that can be considered image developement - raw processing and color/lighting adjustments, but does not do compositing. If you are shooting raw and want professional image developement I'd recommend to do this in Aperture and not in iPhoto - you will have much more control over this in Aperture (after a steep learning curve). You can also  repair and retouch the image to correct minor blamishes. For graphics compositing and inpainting you can set up an external editor and send your images from Aperture to this external editor - any of the editors Corky recommended would be o.k. for this.
To see, if you will want the advanced image processing in Aperture or the easy to use, more basic options in iPhoro will be sufficient to you have a look at the Aperture User manual, or the tutorial on the support page: Aperture Support
But Aperture is a professional apllication, not "plug and play". You should only consider it, if you are willing to spend some time on learning to use it properly and are willing to work your way through the manual.

After an update or installation, your MBP may take some time to index its files. Give it some time - but if you don't see any improvement, post here - you'll get an answer!
