Slower switching between Spaces

It seems Apple made the speed of switching between Spaces (with 4 fingers to the left/right) slower on edges. Now it's "landing" much slower than in Lion. It's rather frustrating.
I tried to find Terminal hacks to fix this but none of them worked for me.

Command defaults write com.apple.dock workspaces-edge-delay -float 0.1 doesn't work out.

  • Ctrl + numbers switch between spaces doesn't work in lion

    After a fresh install of Lion I'veexperienced strange behavior in mission control. I copied all my apps,documents, settings, etc. from SL to Lion but I noticed something different in Lion. Before I changed spaces by using ctrl+number-keys but for some reasonthis doesn’t work in Lion for me. It does nothing. When I hold down ctrl anduse the arrow-key it scrolls to the next space with a smooth animation. Afterthis and still holding the ctrl-key and pressing a number-key (3 for instance)it does jump to that space with a faster animation. But after releasing thectrl-key and trying it again without any arrow keys involved it doesn’t work atall. Is there anyone hew is experiencing the same problem? Anyone with a possibleexplanation or a way to solve this issue? I’m wondering if this has somethingto do with the clean install because my father did an upgrade from SL to Lionand ctrl+number-keys to switch between spaces works fine for him.
    Thanks in advance,

    Go to the Keyboard preference pane -> Keyboard Shortcuts -> Mission Control and check to see if you have the ^ + number keys set.

  • Slow switch between desktops (spaces)

    Hi all
    Just updated to 10.8. I think this is a new problem, one that was not in OsX Lion. I have a word document on desktop1 and a pdf file (or something else) on desktop2. I need to switch between deskt.1&2 quite fast and fluently to take notes from the pdf. But I can't start typing right away in the word document. I know I could just have the two programs on deskt.1 and cmd+tab between, but I prefer the other way.
    This is a bit of a flaw, don't you think? Solution?
    Sincerely,
    Helgi

    Sure, with compiz you can do a lot more than this . I've installed KDE4 again, but cannot get it to switch desktops the way I wanted. Scroll over pager works on every DE, though it requires precise mouse aiming over the pager. In XFCE I don't have to aim - just move the mouse to the side of the screen (where I have margin set, so desktop is available there) and scroll.
    Alt+scroll requires additional movement, which is annoying when for example I do things, that don't require keyboard use (like composing the playlist, browsing the web, changing the GTK2 themes and so on ). I like minimizing things to do to achieve the goal. Therefore I also use cairo-dock, which removed additional mouse click (for raising the menu) when opening the most used applications...
    A funny and I think useful feature I found in KDE4 is action bound to scroll over the window titlebar - it moves the window and the user to the next desktop .

  • Contacts app extremely slow switching between groups

    After upgrading to Mavericks, my Contacts app is extremely slow loading contacts when switching between groups. Clicking on a group causes the beach ball to appear, and only after several about 10 seconds does the contacts in that group load. Does anyone know a solution to this problem?

    I had the same issue as you did -- for a few weeks now I've been suffering through agonizingly slow Contacts performance.
    The way I resolved it was:
    1) Quit Contacts
    2) Go to system preferences and go into iCloud, then uncheck contacts -- choosing to delete from mac.
    3) Go into system preferences and to Internet Accounts and again uncheck contacts under any of the accounts it's enabled on (gmail, yahoo, etc).
    4) Go to your user's library folder (easiest way is to open a finder window, hold down the option key on the keyboard and from the Go menu, select Library).
    5) Delete anything referring to Address book or com.apple.address book....   -- check these folders in particular:
         - Address Book
         - Application Support
         - Caches
         - Preferences
    6) Restart your computer
    7) Go back into System preferences and enable contacts from wherever you want (iCloud, etc.)
    8) If it's not quite enabling (appears to enable, but checkbox doesn't show), then do one more restart of the computer.
    9) Now open Contacts and allow it to sync

  • FaceTime camera turns off when switching between spaces

    I will have the Facetime app on, have a conversation with a person. I have Mail opened up full screen in another "space." When I switch to that space, the camera turns off. I have to go back to the "space" that FaceTime is in in order to turn the camera back on. Is there a way to keep the camera on all the time when switching between different spaces and the Dashboard?

    Having the same problem - In Snow Leopard, when I was on a FaceTime chat with a friend, I was able to navigate away from the FaceTime and surf, check the calendar and other stuff without pausing my video feed. In LION, for whatever reason, FaceTime pauses itself whenever I navigate away from the app. It's as if the application is FORCING me to stay in the conversation when, sometimes, I use FaceTime for TALKING, not VIDEO CONFERENCING.

  • Strange issue when switching between spaces

    This morning my laptop (MBP) started doing strange things when I switch space. For starters, it takes a lot longer to actually make the transition. Then, when the desktop has moved, it takes a second or so for the primary application window on that desktop to be activated, and the menu bar does a strange swipe animation. I've noticed in Console that there are errors such as this each time I switch space:

  • ML high cpu after switching between spaces

    After reboot system will run perfectly until I swipe to another space at which point WindowServer starts consuming the majority of the CPU, reported as 600-700% on an 8 core system as reported by Actiivty Monitor. The only way to recover that I have found it to reboot and don't use spaces at all. Unfortunatly most of my apps are locked to a specific space on startup.
    This problem started with the install of Mountain Lion and took a long time to narrow it down to the use of spaces. By default I use 4 spaces on boot.

  • Is there a way to switch between workspaces in Spaces from the command line?  I want to write a script to set up certain applications in certain workspaces (without having to do it manually each time)...

    Is there a way to switch between workspaces in Spaces from the comnand line?  I use several workspaces from Spaces, each workspace having a certain number of fixed applications running.  Rather than set all this up each time I log on, I'd like to write a script from the command line (I use gawk) to automate this. Currently I have a gawk script that, given a directory, opens a few xterms whose working directory is the given directory, and opens "preview" applied to a certain file in that directory.  However, at present I have to manually move an xterm through each workspace and run my gawk script in each workspace (applied to each directory that I'm working on).
    There must be a better way...

    Addendum: Can this be done via:   open -a Spaces --args xxx  , where xxx is some set of arguments (or something like this)?

  • Switching between scripts in Advanced actions very slow on Mac OS X

    Hi,
    I've been experiencing a problem with Captivate taking an inordinate amount of time (approx 30-40 seconds) to switch between scripts in the Advanced Actions window. This happens incrementally as create/duplicate scripts and switch from one to the other. After switching about 4 to 5 times, the wait extends to 30-40 seconds. The rest of Captivate is unaffected, i.e. no delay issues when adding statements to a script, or working with other features in Captivate. I called Adobe Support but they said it is the first time they heard about this issue, although they seemed to suggest that Captivate is "slower" on the Mac. For comparison's sake, and to check if there was anything wrong with the project file itself, I tried using a trial version on a PC running Windows XP (using the same project file) and I experienced no issues, and switching between scripts remained constantly quick even after several hours working on a project.
    This particular project requires a lot of scripting and this issue has ground my productivity down to a halt having to wait 30-40seconds just to switch between scripts. Adobe suggesting "removing programs" from the Mac to speed up affairs, but I don't think there is anything wrong with the machine as it runs other Adobe software, like InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat without any issues. In addition, while the switching is being processed, OS X doesn't hang. I am perfectly able to switch to other applications, or load new ones, which indicates that Captivate is not hogging all the resources.
    I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue before, and if so if a solution/workaround has been identified?
    Thanks!

  • Ios7 Update Problems on iPad 3 - My iPad is not going to black screen after not being touched.  Also, am I crazy; I can't find timing adjustment to go to black.  Finally, iPad slow to switch between some catgagories in control panel

    O.K.  I found 3 issues on my iPad 3 after ios update:
    1.  iPad does not go to black after non-use
    2.  iPad is slow to switch between some catagories in control panel
    3.  Speaking of control panel; have I lost my mind?  I can't find time adjustment responsible for iPad going to black.

    Outside of the contact number for that you've already used I don't know another way of direct contact. Here are some things that they may or may not of had you try that might help you. If you will go to the settings app and pick general on the right-hand side you will see accessibility. Within that you can adjust a text size make the text bowl you can also increase the contrast. You can also adjust the brightness and control panel.
    As for Siri again in the settings app under general you should see Siri on the right-hand side with the switch to turn it on. If that is turned on and you're still having issues
    Try a Restart.
    Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
     Resetting your settings
    You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.
    Resetting your device
    Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
    Or if this doesn't work and nobody else on the blog doesn't have a better idea you can contact Apple.

  • Concerns over switching between new Azure SQL Database Service Tiers

    Windows Azure's new SQL Database
    service tier pricing model will be put into effect in less than 12 months. We currently have SQL Databases on the Business and Web Edition pricing models.
    We recently asked Azure Support a number of questions around the scalability and ability to switch between these tiers. The responses so far have been far from encouraging:
    Q: If we exceed the criteria for a given tier (see http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/azure/dn741336.aspx), how will Azure respond? For example, if we are on the S1 service tier, and we exceed the maximum number of sessions (200), will any new sessions be
    blocked until we manually increase the service tier? Or will you automatically move (and bill) us to/for the next tier level?
    A: If you exceed the criteria of the existing tier, you shall be notified of performance issue like throttling. Users may experience slowness and blocking. There will not be any automatic upgrade.
    Q: So to confirm, if we suddenly experience increased, unanticipated client activity overnight due to our web site becoming more popular, you will be blocking any user sessions over and above our performance level limit, until we manually make the transition
    to the next level? Is there no “overdraft” facility/scalability in this respect? If this scenario took place within a short space of time, how would we have time to react? Simply blocking new sessions and preventing customers from using our site is not acceptable.
    A: I’m sure you understand that SQL Azure database is a shared resource and hence we cap the resources for individual subscription so that a fair service is provided to all the concurrent users. If you feel that you cannot compromise on the user experience
    then you shall think of an edition that best suits you. Please refer to the following document to best understand the throttling and its impact. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/1541.windows-azure-sql-database-connection-management.aspx#Throttling_Limits
    Q: Since the changing of the performance level could take several minutes/hours depending on the size of the database, would we experience any downtime/degradation of performance of the database during this period?
    A: You might
    Q: If downtime/degradation of performance are a possibility whilst we switch service tiers, what do Microsoft recommend we do to safeguard against this? Should we create a second database on a higher tier level and then export the data from the lower tier and
    import to the higher, before switching over? How do Microsoft recommend we switch tiers in a production environment with minimal disruption?
    A: If you want to upgrade the tiers due to degradation of performance, you will have to create another database on a higher tier and import the data.
    One of our key reasons for moving to Azure hosting was the seamless scalability it appeared to offered. As you can imagine, the responses above are a major concern for our production environment. Does anyone else have any thoughts or concerns in this respect?

    James,
    I reviewed the support incident you referred to and believe that the questions you asked may have been answered later in the interaction you had with the engineer.  For the benefit of others viewing this forum I want to reiterate the answers
    to your key questions here as well.
    Q. What is the behavior when you reach the limits for the service tier?
    A. Each service tier currently has limits on 4 different dimensions (CPU, physical reads, log writes and memory) of resource consumption.  When you reach one of the limits, the behavior depends on which resource limit you are hitting, but
    generally speaking is consistent with the behavior you would see with a similar hardware limit in the SQL Server box product.  For example, when you reach the CPU limit your queries will start showing more SOS_SCHEDULER_YIELD waits,
    the memory limit will cause a higher percentage of pages to be read from disk instead of the buffer cache (PAGEIOLATCH_xx waits), etc.  This set of limits does not directly abort any of your queries--they just run longer as they
    vie for the fixed set of resources made available to your database.  In a system where the load greatly exceeds the resources, queries may start to time out.
    The new service tiers continue with the Web/Business edition behavior of limiting the number of sessions and concurrent requests (worker threads) you can have.  When you exceed these limits you'll get error 10928.  Note that
    each tier in Basic/Standard/Premium have different values for these limits (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn369873.aspx) than Web/Business and thus may encounter the errors at different usage levels.  The key is choosing the appropriate
    service level for the application, and to facilitate that the sys.resource_stats view shows historical usage information so you know where you stand as far as reaching any of the limits.  This resource consumption data is also available in the portal.
    Q. Is it possible to switch service tiers, and is there any disruption when you do so?
    A. Yes, you can change between service tiers as described in this MSDN documentation (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn369872.aspx).  This can be done through the portal, powershell, or REST APIs.  [The preview currently has a restriction
    where legacy servers don't support switching to Basic/Standard which is expected to be removed in the near future.]  The link above outlines the limits on the number of tier changes you can do in a 24 hour period, expected time to perform the change, and
    the client disconnect that occurs.
    If you have further questions, feel free to re-engage on the support incident or reply to this forum thread.

  • Safari hangs on new tab and slows switching full screen apps..

    Hey guys,having problems with safari,when a new tab is open which displays all the most visited sites,it lags wayyyy toooo much when switching to other full screen apps,this happens only in new tab and while showing visited sites not when another website is open...i have updated to the latest os 10.8.3,and this just started happening a month back,just yesterday safari was hanging with everypage,i did a full reset and then the same problem,please help..i don like to use other web browsers at all..

    I agree with everything you said about full screen apps, mission control and launchpad. For apps that made sense to run full screen, they already could under SL. Launchpad is totally unnecessary and Mission Control is a mere shadow of Expose and Spaces.
    However, I feel you have not given due credit to Spaces. The point of Spaces is to let one organise logical desktops for different tasks, not just a way to reduce the number of windows on display. For example, I have a Space for software development where I run Xcode and the iPhone simulator, a Firefox window showing perhaps documentation or some other websites pertaining to software development, a Finder window that is opened in the folder with my design docs. I have another Space where I have the remote login sessions, yet another Space with another Firefox window where I do general surfing and emailing. I can switch between these spaces using a keyboard shortcut, which is much quicker than having to lift my hand off the keyboard, move it over to the mouse, move the mouse pointer over the Dock, find the app and click on it, only to find that it has switched to the wrong window of the app.
    Without Spaces, organisation of my desktop is disrupted each time I want to switch task, whereas Spaces allows me to drop everything I am doing, go and do something completely different for a while and go back to my exact previous environment. I have a 27" iMac so am not short of screen space but I use Spaces extensively. BTW, switching Spaces using a keyboard shortcut is a lot faster on SL than the equivalent on Lion, thanks to the gratuitous screen animation of the latter.

  • MDIChildren flickering problem while switching between child form with dockstyle.fill and borderstyle.none

    I have an mdi applicaton in Visual studio 2010 (.Net framework 4.0). I'm having a flickering problem when user switch between an MDI Child form. I'm declaring the child form then setting the borderstyle.none at design time and dock property to fill
    through programming and make them a MDIChildren before I show them so that it takes up the entire space of the MDI Parent window without being maximized (client request).
    i don't want to display control box(minimize, maximize,close) of child form in mdi parent form. (client request)
    The problem is that when the child form is being displayed it is briefly shown in it's default size with icon and control box before being resized to fill the available area on the MDI Parent form. When a Child Form loads, you can see it in it's original
    size (the size from Design-time) then all this flickering while maximizing .
    In other words, child form show up in the client area of the MDIForm, not maximized, with a caption, very shortly, before they are finally filling the client area. there is a short flicker when a new form is created and displayed. This process is most noticeable
    with a not-so-powerful PC or there are lots of control inside child form.
    below is my code to show child form
       MyChild1 c1 = new MyChild1();
                                c1.MdiParent = MdiMainParent;
                                c1.Dock = DockStyle.Fill;
       c1.Show();
    how can i solved the problem of flickering issue?
    I tried many options which i have described below
    1.double buffering.
    2.set style property to child form
          this.SetStyle(ControlStyles.UserPaint, true);
          this.SetStyle(ControlStyles.AllPaintingInWmPaint, true);
          this.SetStyle(ControlStyles.DoubleBuffer, true);
    3. override below method in each child form
    protected override CreateParams CreateParams
                get
                    CreateParams cp = base.CreateParams;
                    cp.ExStyle |= 0x02000000;
                    return cp;
    4. override below method in each child form
      const int WM_NCPAINT = 0x85;
            const int WM_SIZE = 0x05;
            protected override void WndProc(ref Message m)
                if (m.Msg == WM_NCPAINT)
                    if (this.WindowState == FormWindowState.Maximized)
                        return;
                if (m.Msg == WM_SIZE)
                    if (this.WindowState == FormWindowState.Maximized)
                        return;
                base.WndProc(ref m);
    but I didn't see any effects.  please someone help me to resolve flickering issue. thanks in advance.

    Hi hardikvaishnav,
    This is a known issue which has been reported to Microsoft Connect. Unfortunately, this issue will not fix due to stability issues around MDI. For more details, see
    https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/97787/border-of-mdi-child-form-flashes-up-despite-formborderstyle-none.
    You might use a user control or panel instead.

  • Best way to speed up switching between apps?

    Hi,
    I'm trying to figure out what I can do to make my Mac Pro better, (ie, faster) at switching between applications. There will be times when I am working in Photoshop and I need to go back to Illustrator, or InDesign (these seem to be the 2 worst offenders) and it will literally take minutes for my computer to finally open the .ai or .indd file. And just fyi, the files are already open, I'm just clicking from the PS environment to an already open file in Illustrator or InDesign and bringing them to the front.
    Is this a lack of RAM? Is it something else? Is it an Adobe issue? I'm just pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to make this better/more efficient. If buying/installing more RAM would help, then I am open to that, but I just want to make sure that is the root of the problem, or that it will at least make it better. I suspect that it's not necessarily just an Adobe-centric issue since clicking on Firefox will also reproduce the same problem, ie. it will take a minute or two to finally come to the front.
    The basic breakdown of my system: Mac Pro 2 x 2.66 GHz 6-Core Intel Xenon, 8 GB Memory (8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3), running system 10.6.8. Adobe Creative Suite 5.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
    -Eric

    It might help to have Activity Monitor running while you're working like this, to see what's happening to the CPU, the RAM, and the drives. Activity Monitor is in your Applications/Utilities folder.
    The first tab of the application is CPU usage. Unless you're pegging the cores with a heavy processing job (eg, file conversion), that's unlikely to be your bottleneck, but it's always possible that there's a process running there you weren't aware of.
    Next is RAM. When you have large files open, those files are stored in RAM, so with PS, AI and ID files open at the same time, you may find you quickly use up your available memory. Check how much red, yellow, blue and green you have in the pie chart. Any time you have to page RAM out to the hard drive, it'll cause a slowdown. I would say 8GB is actually on the low side for that kind of simultaneous use of Adobe apps. Get 12GB or really as much as you can afford.
    Obviously check drive space - you should leave a good 10-15% room free on your project drive. And are you storing the media/project files on your system drive? Using a separate, fast (ie, 7200rpm) drive, or even two striped, can give you MUCH better performance when reading/writing media.

  • Using Windows 7 and Firefox 10.0.2, at random times all home page images "disappear" when switching between web sites. Page layout on some web sites is lost. Requires removing and downloading Firefox to restore. Any ideas?

    I have recently (6 months ago) purchased and use an HP Pavilion desktop with Windows 7. At times, when especially active (several windows open) and switching between windows or using links to connect with another web page, all the images on the home home page "disappear", that is to say there is space, but no image, as if the page did not load correctly. When this happens, pages other than the home page also do not display images.
    Same pages display correctly in Explorer whenever this happens.

    Hi
    Can you please try setting up full persmission in the security properties for everyone on the wsconfig folder C:\ColdFusion10\config\wsconfig  and restart ColdFusion Server.
