Slowly but continuously losing HD space after installing 10.9

I installed Mavericks a while back but didin't notice until recently that my available HD space is gradually decreasing with time. It got to the point where I only had ~200 Mb of storage left. Im on an older 2007 macbook running 10.9. I have a 45 Gb bootcamp partition, which is NOT losing space. Anyone run into this/know how to fix this?

This could be caused by caches and temporary files in your system. Have you been using your mac a lot? Have you been using very resource-heavy programs? These are all causes of cache/temp file size increase. Try deleting your safari history, safari cache, and any temporary files in the system. This won't completely stop the problem, as it'll keep using data, but you'll get it back when you do this.

  • Losing disk space after installing Mavericks

After installing OS X Mavericks, I had noticed my computer was losing disk space after updating some products. I even shut down my computer to allow it to readjust to the updates, cleared some unnecessary apps, and yet I see my computer losing more space, as if files are being added behind the scenes. I've adjusted my browser Safari to more private settings, even cleared the cache, to avoid this, yet it still occurs. Are there other files I should be clearing?

the trouble is I don't know what is causing the disk space to be taken. I'm idly using Safari with private browsing set, when I come looking at my finder, seeing the space gradually falling. I was at 695.02 GB available this morning, and now at 694.83 GB available. I've made no downloads in between then, so I'm wondering if this is the result of downloading Mavericks directly from the app store, or if there is a setting I need to fix. I've tried verrifying/repairing the disk, permissions too, but I still see the decrease occurring.

  • How many free disk space after install OS X lion (10.7) ?

    Hi,
I would like to know that how many free disk space after install OS X lion (10.7) on MBA i5.
    Many Thanks,
    Eric

I want to buy MBA i5, I would like to free disk space of MBA 13" i5, Could anyone tell it to me? Thanks
As you're buing a new MacBook Air, it will come pre-installed with Lion.  The actual installation will be somewhat larger than a "clean" Lion install as it will come with iLife preinstalled.  Obviously, with an Air's limited storage space, you want to be sure that you have enough room for any applications and data that you'll want to keep on the SSD as well.  It is fairly easy to upgrade the SSD on an Air:

The amount of RAM you have installed is probably more important.  Fortunately, the newest 13" MacBook Airs all come with 4GB standard now.

  • Losing disk space after upgrade of Mavericks

The download and installation was successful. However, after restarting and before upgrading all free iWork apps including iTunes and iPhoto. I noticed that after recovering about 10gb of disk space, it started reducing it again.  I continued with the upgrade of the said apps, but after leaving my mbp for a few hours it started losing disk space again. this time its agresssive, i've lost around 40gb overnight, without using any apps or activating any updates.  Please help!

It sounds like Time Machine is turned ON and the computer is making backups to the hard disk.  This space is freed automatically, if required by the OS.

  • Continuous error beep/alarm after installing USB printer

Anyone have any experience with a continuous disabling/enabling of a USB device (in this case a printer) after installing on an X201 running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit?  Printer (older HP 2420) installs as expected in Win 7 and test page prints as desired.  Shortly thereafter the device seems to drop/readd continuously, and the only way to fix is to unplug the device.
    Any assistance?  Thanks.

I think I understand what you are trying to do now.  How are you trying to install the printer software (download from website or software disc that came with the printer)?
Are you certain your USB cord is working?
Is your XP computer compatible with the Belkin switch?
Does your switch require software installation as well?
I think your error about the USB device not being recognized sounds more like a computer/Windows error message such as the Belkin device itself is not recognized by the XP computer because that is not the same words used when the printer is not recognized.  I don't want to refer you back to Belkin so I will do my best to assist you but I can only hope I can fix this because this is what I call out-of-scope for me and do not have any formal training on your method.  Maybe I can come up with a work-around instead.  Answer my questions please while I think of perhaps another configuration of these devices more suitable for you.
Don't forgot to say thanks by giving "Kudos" if I helped solve your problem.

  • Only 90MB disk space after installing iLife '11 - how to move iLife?

Hi, my installation of OS X is on a small SSD and I just barely had enough space to install iLife '11. I need more free disk space though so I need to move the largest iLife programs or maybe the whole thing. Obviously I wouldn't be posting here if the iLife '11 installer would let me install to my external drive but that wasn't the case. I tried "moving" iMovie but I got an error saying that I didn't have permissions. Thanks for any help!
MY LIBRARIES ARE EMPTY! So moving them won't help!

Well - I partially figured out my own solution. You can move iLife. I moved the apple loops in /Library/Audio and all the iLife directories in /Library/Application Support to my storage drive. I made symbolic links for each folder I moved. Then I moved the apps to the other drive. I also moved my home folder - thanks Tom. Now I have 4GB of space back and I'm not seeing any more slowdown. I realize now if I have any other problems I'll just symbolic link more stuff off my startup SSD. Works like a charm for now. I'll update this thread if I run into any trouble. I ran GarageBand and all the loops play instantly off the symbolic links. So to all of you - remember to think creatively! My only alternative was to reinstall os x on the regular HDD - glad I took a moment to learn about symbolic links.

  • Missing HD space after install

Today I did archive install on my Imac to see if would fix a problem which it has, but now I'm missing space. I started with 118.78GB and now after the install and updates i have 115.68GB. Does anyone know what could account for the missing harddrive space. I have deleted the old previous system folder already and the updates I download I had on the previous system
    Fox

Yea, i did trash the old sys...so i'm not sure what is going on but oh well not like I lost a lot of space its only 3gb being used for something which could have been stuff i previously deleted so I'm not overly worried.

  • Regaining space after install

    Hey guys,
Is there anyway thing i can remove left over from tiger after the installation?
i only have 2 gb left :S not good
    Mark Harris

So I have to assume that what you did was upgrade Tiger to Leopard. If you don't have an external drive of some sort to back up your personal files; data, music, fotos, videos, etc, that would be the easiest.
There are two other forms of installation; Archive and Install and an Erase and Install. With the A & I your Tiger system would have been set aside and a Leo system installed and your files and accounts would be preserved. After you could drag the Tiger system to the Trash. However, since you only have 2 gigs of room on your HD, I suspect the installer would have said there wasn't enough room on the HD to do an A & I.
The E & I would involve erasing the entire HD and then installing a Leo system and either creating new accounts or transferring your accounts and your files from a backup to the fresh install.
To make some room on your HD you can download Monolingual and remove all the language resources you don't need. This can free up a few gigs. You need to keep the app because you will find the language resources creeping back with every Apple OS and app update.
You can also remove all the printer drivers in HD/Library/Printers for all the brands you don't have. You can even remove all the drivers from your brand that are not your model of printer.
I think you need to begin some form of archiving stuff you want to save, but don't use. I'm sure that your Mac suffers in its performance with an HD this full. Performance starts dropping when you start getting over 50%.

  • My HD-EG5 hard drive only shows me 99 mb of blank space after installing the App lock feature. ??

Upon installing the HD-EG5 500gig Hard Drive & installing the app lock feature, I was prompted to unplug & replug the drive in. When I did all that showed up was a 99 mb section called App unlock. After checking the drive at the most basic level, I can see the other 460+ gig using external software but it cannot be seen when you plug the drive into a USB port.

    Travis,
I suggest that you format the hard drive in FAT32 format to resolve the issue.

  • Missing HD space after installing Leopard

I have a used 17" iMac with a 160gb HD.I just installed Leopard about a week ago and backed up all my files and programs, but didn't delete anything. Before I installed Leopard I was able to hold 60+GB of music along with all my other files with spare room. I then installed Leopard, put everything back on, and accidentally copied some files multiple times and and my Hard Drive was full. I deleted all the extra files but now only have 5.09 GB free space while only being able to hold less than half my music, fewer Applications and fewer files. I've emptied my trash and used Whatsize and the numbers still don't add up. Any ideas?

How did you do the upgrade? If you used +Archive and Install+ option with the Mac OS X Installer, your old system is retained and put into a folder called +Previous Systems+ (at the root level), so that may account for the loss of space.
A typical Leopard installation can take up about 3 more GBs of space than a typical Tiger installation. How much space do you feel is not accounted for?

  • I updated to iOS 8.2 and now can't use iMessage.  Keeps telling me my password is not correct, but continues to do so after changing it.

Updated to iOS 8.2 and now iMessage won't work. I disabled 2-step verification, changed password, but still no go.  What gives?

    Hello David,
Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you're not able to use iMessage on your iPad. You've tried some good troubleshooting steps, and I'd recommend these additional steps:
Turn off iMessage and FaceTime and restart
Go to Settings > Messages and turn off iMessage.
Go to Settings > FaceTime and turn off FaceTime.
    Restart your device.
Turn iMessage and FaceTime back on.
Still not activated after an hour?
It might take a few minutes to activate iMessage and FaceTime. If you've waited more than an hour, try these steps:
Make sure that your device has the latest version of iOS.
If you're using an iPhone, contact your carrier to make sure that you can receive SMS messages.
    Contact Apple Support.

  • TRYING TO DOWNLOAD ADOBE FLASH TO LISTEN ON I PLAYER, DOWNLOAD SUCCESSFUL BUT CONTINUES TO TELL ME TO INSTALL

I have downloaded Adobe Flash several times and I still cannot play BBC i-player, the download says it is successful but when I come to listen to a station it tells me to download Adobe again?

If your the Administer you should be able to go to Finder and click downloads then delete the Adobe download file (to delete the file you have to select it and push command and delete). Also check your Applications if the application is there too. If your not the Administer, your account on the computer could be blocked from deleting downloads and applications, so you need the Administer to do these steps (if you're not the Administer you still could be able to delete downloads and applications).
