Slowness of rollovers in iWeb

I finally straightened out how to make rollovers in iWeb and have incorporated them into my site.
http://www.thomasbricker.com/
What I wonder is why rollovers and load times are so slow on a site hosted on the Mobile Me server?
It has always been this way. Seems to still be the case.
Why?
Is it the way that iWeb constructs it's CSS?
I have tried opening an iWeb page in Dreamweaver and it kind of falls apart.
Looks like iWeb uses AP Divs and CSS style sheets.
I just cant figure out how they wrap the structure together.
Is there any way to make an iWeb Mobile Me hosted website any zippier?

MobileMe is definitely slower than the server I use. I have a MobileMe account and test sites on it before optimizing and uploading to Host Excellence.
The Apple server has a restricted bandwidth and therefore limits the number of viewers who can access you site in any given time period which makes it unsuitable for commercial or popular sites.
My hosting company cost is only slightly more than MobileMe and that is more than justified by the extra speed, reliability and available functions such as the ability to run scripts and set up mail forwards for processing forms.
You can't really put a value on good tech support of which MobileMe has almost zero!

  • Rollovers in iWeb?

    Hi, I am a pro retoucher, and have looked around for an easy way to put images in some sort of gallery view, but with rollover effects displaying before images and after images if you roll the mouse over them.
    Any idea if iWeb has any plans in ever putting this kind of thing in? (If they haven't already) I see there are HTML snippets one can embed and other fancy workarounds, but my HTML skills are extrmemly limited and can't see how I can integrate that into the galleries functionality as it's all backend coding stuff and I am very much front end designer...
    May just have to learn the next best thing - SiteGrinder - as that is Photoshop converted to websites, and with Photoshop being my strength, seems the way to go, but even that requires a lot of time going thru the tutorials...
    Just hoped there was a quick way of doing it in iWeb. Any suggestions/insight most welcome

  • IWeb Running Extremely SLOW...

    I am running the latest version on iWeb.
    I have about 8 or so photo albums included in my site and the software is extremely sluggish when switching between albums or to the page that shows the albums. It was not doing this earlier, when I was working on the site. I have restarted, rebooted and re-powered, none have resolved the issue.
    Any ideas on how I can eliminate the extremely slow speed of the iWeb software, seems to have just come about.
    Thanks for your help.

    Flash Album Exporter is good and JAlbum is incredible and has free storage too if you need it...

    http://roddymckay.com/VisualMedia/BananaAlbum.html
    http://roddymckay.com/VisualMedia/JALbum.html
    Because they are flash, the info is pulled from a separate file on your server and all the images don't have to load with the page.
    There are lots of other alternatives and I'm sure others will suggest them.

  • Any sign of Rollovers being easier in iWeb '09?

    I've read the threads and tried to make rollovers in iWeb 08.
    No luck. (I add a snippet of code and get "jack")
    Do you think there will be a more direct a method to achieve this basic function in iWeb 09 when it comes out?

    Ok Guys,
    I finally got it to work!
    Way too much work but I know believe it is possible.
    Here is my glorious creation:
    http://web.me.com/thomasbricker/RolloverTest/RolloverPage.html
    Couple of things:
    OT, I couldnt get your code to work:
    But I could get this code to work:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    function mouseOver()
    document.rollover_one.src ="url of rollover image"
    function mouseOut()
    document.rollover_one.src ="url of original image"
    </script>
    Remaining questions:
    Does this script only work if all the rollover images have been published to Mobile Me servers?
    Can this scripting work on a site that is published to a local folder? (I couldnt get it to work)
    Thanks all.
    Apple, Please make this whole operation about 100 times easier in future releases.
    You use rollovers on your own site so how about working them into your software. : )

  • IWeb Tiled Image Background Loads for Each Page

    My site Ostyn-Newman.com uses a black template.  I have an image that I tile for the background as well as for the browser background.  They are the same image. IWeb seems to do two things that make my site slow way down. IWeb
    1) Treats the browser background image and site background image as two images even though they are identical.  This makes for 2x the downloading necessary to fill the backgrounds.  The files are identical except for the file names.
    2) Creates image files for each page even though each page has identical browser and webpage backgrounds.  This means that on a 1000 page site, there are 2000 copies of the same image that could be reduced to 1 if they could be shared.  This would make for a much faster experience for our site viewers.
    Any ideas on how to make this happen?  I'm confounded.  I also have many small logos that I use dozens of time on the same page and IWeb creates a different image for each one.  You can see what I mean here  http://ostyn-newman.com/Gov_Fabrics.html  No big deal since each one is only a couple kb, but when you do that with 8 logos and each of those 8 is on a page 300 times, it starts to add up.  These examples are different but similar.  I'd love to figure out how to get IWeb to create and use common image resources.  I'm not html savvy, but I am fairly familiar with inserting snippets of code here and there via the Insert/Widget/HTML Snippet function to get done what I want to get done.  Thank you for the help.
    As an aside, I have explored creating a custom template using my image, but that has proved to be a bit more complex than I am capable of.  Is there a template that allows me to put my image in as the background?  That would take care of everything for me.

    Your Govt Fabrics and Leather page contains 1746 files that must be loaded for that page.
    It took me nearly 30 seconds to load your page entirely with Safari over a very fast internet connection. Firefox took about the same, maybe a few seconds quicker and Chrome 24 seconds.
    There seems to be 3 distinct sets of identifying images below the samples:
      , and
    To reduce the number of individual files to be loaded why not create 3 images, one with the 4 items, one with the 3 items, one with the 5 items and use them instead of using individual images under each sample.  That will greatly down on the number offiles needed to be loaded.
    Also using more than one page to display the samples would make each indivicual page load so much quicker than all on one page.
    These are just some food for thought.

  • IWeb Update good for me - using 10.4?

    Aloha - I'm afraid to do the new iWeb update as the last two QT updates have messed with my FCP. I'm still using 10.4.11 - and was told my issues with QT may be b/c of that. So - I was wondering if I should hold off on the iWeb update or does the operating system have no relation to iWeb updates?
    ALSO - We just launched a new site using iWeb for our business - http://www.livingoceanproductions.com/LivingOceanProductions/Home.html -
    We're an u/w imaging business in Hawaii - many of the movie files are not playing on the site - they show up with a ? sometimes - other times they seem to work fine. I made my own template instead of using the movie page they have - could this be an the problem? A couple movies always play fine and are around 12mb - whereas some of the smaller file sized movies take forever to load.
    Any insights?
    Many Mahalos

    Hi and thanks for your replies! This page has problems with people:
    http://www.livingoceanproductions.com/LivingOcean_Productions/REQUIEM.html - and 3 different people I know using Internet Explorer and Windows XP say that just a white screen pops up when they go to the page?
    Other people tell me that when they go to it, there is a ? mark over the movie file?
    Also - having troubles with pages that have more than one movie file - do you all think it is better to have only one movie per page? I was thinking of just having jpegs up so that if people click on a photo (thinking it's a movie file), it goes to a new page each time. Could this be my best route with the slow load times in iWeb?
    Again - thanks for your comments.
    Aloha

  • Using iWeb 09 to create website for showreel and videos

    Hello,
    I'm an independent film maker and I am looking to set up my own website to show my work on. Seeing how iWeb 09 finally allows you to publish your website to a host via FTP, I wondered if anyone could answer some questions for me - I have googled some stuff but have not come up with any satisfactory answers.
    Okay, so basically I want a really simple website - incredibly simple in fact. All I want to do is have live streaming video (like the movie trailers on apples movie trailer website) for my own films. Of course, I want the videos to be of the highest quality (with some HD stuff as well). I have found a web host that offers unlimited web-space and bandwidth/traffic for a very cheap price each month, so is it simply a case of dragging a QT movie file into iWeb 09, publish it via FTP, and hey presto, people can view my films in high quality on the web? Is it really that simple or is there a catch?
    Also, I may want to show some videos encoded with Flash, not QT. Is that still possible using iWeb 09?
    Many, many thanks if you can clear up these queries for me, as I cannot seem to find any clear info anywhere else.
    George
    P.S. I will be using FCP, not iMovie, to create and export films. Since they can both export QT files, I presume this will not be a problem?

    George ~ Yes, there's a catch. Your videos will become part of iWeb's Domain file which may make it slow to open in iWeb, make backups and re-publish everything (if needed). Better to upload your videos separately to your server and embed them into your iWeb site.
    iWeb '09 makes this easy if you upload your videos to YouTube: iWeb '09 has a new YouTube widget to embed your videos into your iWeb page:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/iweb/#widgets
    ...For high definition video, YouTube was recently ranked the best of several video sites:

    If you're concerned that some PC users won't have QT and won't want to install it, I think if you go the embedded YouTube route, almost all PC or Mac users will be able to view your videos — because "videos on YouTube are streamed through an Adobe Flash player."

  • Iweb Blog ftp or mobile me?

    I have just designed a website in iweb that I ftp through godaddy. Took a while to make that decision, but at least I have complete design control! I am doing pretty well and now at the search rankings stage and realize that iweb isn't great at that. Read some of the articles here on search rankings and downloaded the SEO guide and going to take actions with that, and also bought the godaddy search optimisation pack and intend to place the metatags/descriptions etc on my pages.
    BUT, I now want to design a second site which is just a blog, which obviously isn't showing up through godaddy, so need to mobileme it. But, with a blog, how do you add the metatags etc to the pages, and are their individual pages for each blog posting? Does mobile me make it easy to go into each file and make the blog searchable? Just not sure whether to just design blog pages myself in iweb rather than their formatted ones, and use godaddy instead?
    So, in short - mobile me with formatted iweb blog? or design own blog and ftp with godaddy - which makes the pages more searchable?

    Welcome to the discussions. You'll probably have better luck making your blog pages more searchable if you use a dedicated blogging platform — most of them allow tags to be specified.
    MobileMe is slow and problems with iWeb's blog are a recurring theme on these forums. For a success story with a non-iWeb blog hosted on WordPress, see this old thread:
    To blog or not to blog
    And to link to an external blog from iWeb's navbar:
    Create a blank internal page titled "Blog" (Actually you can name the page whatever you want.) Then in that Blog page add an HTML Snippet with the following code:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    parent.window.location = "http://www.yourblogname.com"; // change this to your own URL
    </script>
    ...Once published, clicking on "Blog" in the navbar will immediately redirect to your external Blog page. (Thanks to Cyclosaurus for the code).
    SEO is important to you, but iWeb is designed for personal sites and, as such, Apple apparently thinks there's no need for Google. Web-design apps for business sites tend to integrate SEO — Sandvox Pro is an example:

  • Looking for pages designd using iWeb

    hi and greetings from germany,
    i'm looking for pages designd using iWeb to get an impression how it is working. I would like to build pages with text and i would like to know if it is possible to change or delete the placeholders for photos in the templates.
    sorry - i can only use that english i learnd at school long ago ... ;-))

    http://www.happyadam.com
    The URL above points to my iWeb - spent a couple of hours with this over the weekend. It's quite flexible - takes a little getting used to (if you've used Pages then it's similar). There's not many templates but it's a good starting point.
    The worst thing is the .Mac servers - they're very slow for hosting these iWebs as many others have found.

  • Create custom navbar w/ rollovers. html snippet Help!

    I'm having issues creating a custom nav w/ rollovers in iweb 08 using the html snippet function. I've basically created 5 rollover buttons in PS (they are .png files) side by side to create a top navbar using this code Seen here. http://web.mac.com/catucker/InsideOutside/Rollover.html.
    The nav works ok in safari, not at all in IE and very strange in FF. You can go to my website to test yourself. www.tuned2b.com
    Is there a better way to achieve this design?
    Thanks Community.

    In the link the > is missing
    +<a href="http://tuned2b.com/pictures.html"+
    Correct it and see if it works.
    Also, add target="_top", otherwise the linked page is displayed in the button area.
    +<a href="http://tuned2b.com/pictures.html" target="_top">+
    It's all in the details.

  • .mac and iWeb Publishing

    Recently I subscribed a .mac trial account because I wanted to try iWeb and iPhoto 6 Photocasting.
    When I publish a webpage from iWeb to .Mac, it'll pop up the login window, asking me to login. I clicked the login button and i typed my .mac account information. I tried to publish again and the same thing happens (.Mac account said my password is valid)
    When I select an album and share by photocasting in iPhoto, it says I haven't set up my account (again, I input info. in my .mac settings already).
    What's going on? Trial account won't work with iLife?
    But I can use my iDisk... that's so weird...
    What's wrong?
    GummyDancer
    (I posted this in both iWeb, iPhoto and .Mac sections. Posted on .Mac section about 2 weeks ago)

    This is strange. During the slow run of the iWeb publish, I pulled up network tools and did a traceroute. It very slowly did its thing and came up with the a route to idisk.mac.com. Shortly thereafter, iWeb suddenly started uploading at a reasonable (for iWeb) speed. Any idea if this could be related to my running of traceroute?

  • Uh Oh,  after Leopard and GB08, MP3 grew from 4.2 to 248 MB?

    Just upgraded to leopard and GB 08 -
    For about a year, I routinely, though rather without actually knowing what I am doing, send my mp3 lectures (4.2 MB) through garageband, usually just one edit, cutting off the beginning if it is slow, and then to iweb. Today, after installing leopard and garage 08, when I send my podcast episode to iweb, it is 248MB!
    So far, I did verify permissions and threw away garageband's preferences, and still the same thing happened. . .
    please help this naive user....
    thanks in advance

    you're using the Share menu to send it to iWeb? what compression setting are you using?

  • Publishing failure

    When I try to publish my iWeb site, i got this unown publishing failure.
    I have been changing my theme on the webiste these days, but it worked before, so I don´t think thats the problem, but I´m not sure.
    Any good idéas? Or do I just have to wait and it will fix it self?
    And one more thing, yesterday, when this started, my whole computer gets slow when I use iWeb..

    Try quitting iWeb and deleting the preference file.....
    Home Folder/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWeb.plist.
    If that doesn't fix it, delete the .plist again, restart your Mac and run Disk Utility to repair permissions.
    If you are publishing to MobileMe, try a "Publish All".

  • Mouse over / rollover

    Can you do mouse overs or rollovers on iWeb? Where you drag the pointer over a link and the links enlarges or highlights.
    Sully

    You can't create those kind of rollovers IN iWeb. You'd have to create your graphics separately and then edit your files after publishing. iWeb only handles creating graphic rollovers when you use a non web safe font (it gets converted to a set of png's in the default text rollover colors). I've got an example of using text dingbats as rollovers here.
    http://web.mac.com/makentosh/iWeb/tipsfromtheiceberg/Blog/416F8EE3-F511-47E8-84F E-80851728F54B.html
    I've got another page here (along with a demo file for download) that displays how you can create full color rollovers using the demo version of eZedia QTI. It has it's own drawbacks in that you still have to edit your files after publishing for Windows browsers (to make it look better). Also, for IE specifically, if you use a background graphic, it can't be a .png or worrying things will happen.
