SLT A55 autofocus problem

I have an SLT A55 with two kit lenses (18-55mm and 55-200mm).  I noticed that some of my photos weren't sharp, and so downloaded a lens focus testing chart and tested the two lenses.  With the 18-55mm lens, the autofocus was accurate when the zoom was set to 55mm.  However, when it was set to 18mm, the camera focused significantly behind the focus target.  This was true for nine of the fifteen focus points (the three top ones, the three bottom ones, the two end ones, and the middle one).    I repeated the exercise with the 55-200 mm lens, and found the same thing.  Set at 200mm, it is accurate, but set at 55mm, the camera focuses significantly behind the target.  I only tested the central focus point this time. This doesn't make sense to me.  Does anyone have any insight and/or advice?  (Happy to provide images if people want them).

Hi PeterTheSBAM,
Good day and thank you for the comment. This article might help you determine if you have a back focus or front focus issue with the camera. Here is the link of the article. https://us.en.kb.sony.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/35810/c/65,66/kw/back%20focus
Different units have different ways of adjusting the back or front focus. I believe the A55 does not have an AF Micro adjust available in the menu.

  • Sony SLT-A55

I'm considering buying the Sony SLT-A55 but before laying down a big chunk o' change, I wanted to know if it will play well w/ my Mac. I have a MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.6, iMovie '09 8.0.6, iPhoto '09 8.1.2, and iDVD 7.0.4. Can this version of iMovie import video directly from this camera or from an SD card if I shoot in 1080p AVCHD? What about iPhoto and importing stills, any problem here? I thought I read that if I shoot RAW that this camera can't use Mac software for editing. And putting everything together, will the movies in HD be usable in iDVD along with a chapter for a still photos slideshow? I know it's a lot to answer, but my current digital camera is dead and I have a trip planned for this week that I want to bring the new camera on. Decided to choose a DSLR that can shoot video so I can leave my mini DV (tape) camcorder at home and use just one camera for everything. I like the Sony for features and price, but if it is not as simple as just connecting and importing into iMovie/Photo, then I'll have to get something else. Possibly the Canon EOS Rebel T3i. Any thoughts?

OK, played around a little but still confused. I'm OK getting the stills off the card, but I can't figure out how to import video. Here is the directory of my card:
Here is the directory with all folders opened:
I thought the video was supposed to be in the MP_ROOT folder but there is nothing there. The DCIM holder has the stills. I shot 2 video clips, each no more than 10 seconds. I can't get anything to play nor can I import anything into iMovie (iMovie>File>Import>Movies then tried selecting all the folders and all the files one at a time and got nothing that iMovie could open). Tried opening all the files w/ QuickTime, nothing doing. I did double click on the files w/ the .BDM extension and when they wouldn't open, the dialog box asked which app to use to open them and I chose QuickTime. That's why the file type says QuickTime Player Document.
What do I do now? Going to reformat the card and delete all the stuff and record some more so I might see where the video files are stashed. Any more help would be appreciated.

  • My iphone 5 32 gb has an camera autofocus problem, please help me solve this

my iphone 5 32 gb has an camera autofocus problem, please help me solve this

    Hi teejayfs,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you've noticed unexpected behavior with your iPhone camera, start with these steps to isolate or resolve the issue:
Camera isn't functioning or has undesired image quality
If the screen shows a closed lens or black image, force quit the Camera app.
If you do not see the Camera app on the Home screen, try searching for it in Spotlight. If the camera does not show up in the search, check to make sure that Restrictions are not turned on by tappingSettings > General > Restrictions.
Ensure the camera lens is clean and free from any obstructions. Use a microfiber polishing cloth to clean the lens.
Cases can interfere with the camera and the flash. Try gently cleaning the lens with a clean dry cloth or removing the case if you see image or color-quality issues with photos.
Try turning iPhone off and then back on.
Tap to focus the camera on the subject. The image may pulse or briefly go in and out of focus as it adjusts.
Try to remain steady while focusing:
Still images: Remain steady while taking the picture. If you move too far in any direction, the camera automatically refocuses to the center.
Note: If you take a picture with iPhone turned sideways, it is automatically saved in landscape orientation.
Video: Adjust focus before you begin recording. You can also tap to readjust focus while recording. Exiting the Camera application while recording will stop recording and will save the video to the Camera Roll.
Note: Video-recording features are not available on original iPhone or iPhone 3G.
If your iPhone has a front and rear camera, try switching between them to verify if the issue persists on both.

  • N95 autofocus problem software related

I've had an N95 for more than a year. Part of the reason I bought it was the 8 GB - could take lots of pictures and video. I'm very disappointed. For reference, I am an eye doctor. I know a lot about prescribing glasses, I know optics, and I have done quite a lot of photography.
As with most cameras, the N95 "take picture" key may be partly depressed to get the focus, then fully depressed to actually take the picture. (Auto mode.) It then takes sharp pictures, if lighting conditions are right, and the phone is held steadily.
It can focus on everything from 20 cm or so to infinity. (Try partly depressing the button, you'll see the picture go in and out of focus, then fix on the sharpest setting.) (With some of the other modes, EG landscape, the focus is "fixed," IE, the camera does not try to autofocus, and you can take pictures a lot quicker.)
So - the fact is established - the N95 hardware is capable of mechanical focussing, and some of its software can also detect which focus setting is the best. So it is not "handicapped" from birth. It should be possible to do something sensible with it. However, it behaves as a gifted child with an attitude problem. "No, mommy, I don't WANT to do homework!" (It's not that the homework is too hard.)
However, there are three big problems:
    1) In "landscape" mode, the focus is not on infinity, it is closer. Thus, pictures of faraway objects taken in this mode are not sharp.
    2) The most vexing. When in video mode THE FOCAL LENGTH IS FIXED - and cannot be adjusted. Mine is sharp at 30-50 cm, but out of focus at distance. It SHOULD BE SHARP AT INFINITY! Who's interested in filming stuff at 30 cm distance? I cannot express with a keyboard alone how annoyed I've been. Sometimes I've put my eyeglasses (I'm nearsighted) over the lens, and the video becomes a lot better.
    3) There is no way to adjust focus "manually," even though it should be technically possible.
So, spare me the condescending stuff about image compression, light conditions etc. **bleep**! And, YES, of course I have set the "video quality" to "TV high quality." Doesn't help. THE PROBLEM IS PURELY OPTICAL! Otherwise my eyeglasses would not help. No, they don't enlarge the image, they just help the focus. (And, no, you cannot borrow my glasses )
I've seen a lot of other discussions about this issue with the N95. None of them seem to give a good answer. Neither have I found a way of taking charge over the focal length. So, my questions are:
    *    Has Nokia come up with a solution? Has anyone who has sent the N95 in for service actually gotten some help?
    *    Is there some other software one can install that can do a better job than the **bleep** cam software of Nokia?
    *    Is it possible to hack or tweak the existing software to change the set points for video? (I assume it goes into a mode like this: "Set focus at 034, resolution at VGA" etc. The "034" (a totally random number, not related to anything) doesn't fix on infinity. Could I hack the setting so that it goes "Set focus at 015, resolution at VGA"? (Of course, one would have to change numbers a couple of times to get it right.)
The N95 promised so much, but delivers so little (the camera is not the only problem), it is giving me an ulcer. Next  time I'm not really motivated to get a Nokia! I want revenge. Apple, can you make me happy?

Just a little addon - yes, I have the latest software / firmware updates installed.

  • Canon 5D MKIII - autofocusing problem

:-)It will only autofocuse in A+ and NOT in any position. I´ve tried with my 24-7mm and my 100-400 mm origianl canon lenses.
What is wrong?? The camera is brand new  Comming from a 40D.. Have I missed something in the menu? and a upgrade to latest firmware didn´t fix  the problem..
    Does anyone has a solution?
    Thank you in advance..
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

To change you go to C.Fn2 menu (the 2 of 4 menu with the Orange Camera symbol) the go to "Custom Controls".  The first one is the Shutter butt. half-press, choose AF On and Metering.  I'm surprised that "Clearing All C.Fn" didn't work but then I never had to use it yet... .  Please let me know if this solves your problem.

  • IPhone4s Autofocus problem during recording video.

    Hi I'm using iPhone4s with iOS5.1.1.
Well..when I use camera of this device, autofocus works perfectly only when taking photos.
But with recording video, autofocus do not work as I start recording. (actually in video recording mode,it works well until i press the recording button.)
Is this the problem of all iphone4s devices or only with my iphone??
As I wondered that, I called apple support center. But he didn't know well about that issue.
Should I go to apple center to get new one? Or this problem happens to all of iphone4s??

    I'm seeing the same thing.

  • Way to fix autofocus problem?

I have a 20 second shot where the autofocus on my camera had trouble settling on what point to focus on. Focus goes in and out at regular intervals, so it looks like the shot is pulsating. Is there a filter where I could compensate for this?
Meaning, since the sharp - soft focus goes back and forth at even intervals, is there a filter I could apply where I could blur - unblur the shot to even it out. I would rather have a soft shot then the very distracting strobe effect.
I hope this makes sense. Thank you

Effects>Video Filters>Blur>Gaussian Blur (or whatever other blur you prefer)
    Effects>Video Filters>Sharpen>Sharpen
Both of these filters should minimize your issues. Simply apply the filters and then create keyframes in the viewer to animate the intensity of the blur or sharpen as the auto focus racks.

  • How to delete/update GPS data using Lightroom?

Title says it all, but I'll explain why I need it.
I have a Sony SLT A55 which is apretty good camera, it has a GPS.
The way GPS work in this camera is it gets a fix, and then updates every undetermined time the position. That's okay, what is stupid in its design is, if you haven't taken pics in let's say 24 hrs. and you move several miles away and start shooting indoors (no GPS signal available) it will mark all your pics with your last known position, so now I have several photographs with a location I left several DAYS ago. I'd prefer the camera not to record GPS data than having a wrong location, but that's another thing for the Sony forums.
So, now I want to delete (or update would be another option) the GPS data from the pics that are tagged with wrong locations.
    I'm shooting RAW,
Is there any way to do it inside Lightroom?

I’m a Nikon user, and here’s how I geotag my images when I want to (not very often). I use a Nokia N95 smart phone and Nokia Sports Tracker to track coordinates with timestamps. I use Nikon’s ViewNX2 to import the images from my camera (or card) to the final destination (folder) of the images. I also transfer the log file from the Sports Tracker to my computer. Then I use ViewNX2 to geotag the most recently imported set of images with the log file from the Sports Tracker. (I don’t know why but I have to adjust the time offset by one hour, fortunately this setting is sticky so I don’t have to do it every time). When the images are geotagged, I do an in-place import in Lightroom, and Lightroom recognizes the GPS coordinates.
ViewNX2 is a free download, and I think this scheme can be used to geotag jpg of tif images from any camera. The raw file capability of ViewNX2 is understandably restricted to Nikon cameras. You could try Geosetter, another free download. The problem with my system is that Geosetter did not understand the log files of my Nokia N95. GPSBabel can translate the log files to a format acceptable to Geosetter, but since ViewNX2 does importing and geotagging (and time-offsetting the N95 log file), I have no need for additional programs.
WRT to the original question ("how to delete/update...") you could try the following: write all metadata (keywords, settings) to your master image files in LR. Then use Geosetter or some other additional tool to modify the GPS data or the affected images. Finally, synchronize the images back to Lightroom, and select the option to use metadata from the images (instead of LR's catalog).
    Best regards
    Antero

  • Sony GPS in Aperture 3

Does anyone here know if the GPS data generated by a Sony SLT-A55 is recognized properly by Aperture?

The STL-A55 manual [here|http://www.docs.sony.com/release/SLTA33.pdf] - caution, big download - is mute on whether the standard EXIF lat/long metadata fields are being used, though they do mention using their own PMB (?) program to do mapping and other geolocating functions.
But it's hard to imagine they'd eff-up so badly as to invent a completely proprietary solution for embedding GPS data. Actually, come to think of it, perhaps DPReview has covered this...
[The GPS is new on the Alpha A55. The function can be activated in the menu and if satellites are found and the camera is positioned geo-data is written in to the images EXIF-data and displayed with the image in review mode.|http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonyslta55/page5.asp]
I'd say you could probably trust DPReview, so if that's the case then SLT-AFF images should geolocate automatically in Aperture's Places.

  • RESIZE option in LR4's Convert to DNG and DNG Converter 7

Besides the option for lossy compression I would love to see the Resize option from LR4 Beta's Export dialog in DNG Converter 7 as well as in LR4's "Library>Convert to DNG" function.
In the wake of cameras like the Nikon D800 and others with huge image files and easy option to convert to smaller sized DNGs would be very helpful.

    Mark Alan Thomas wrote:
Right. I'm not into the whole lossy compression thing. I like the idea of making smaller raw files, but I want the megapixels which remain to be good megapixels.
Now I get what you mean. Apologies.
That would be interesting and of course I absolutely second it: DNG with variable resolution but lossless compressed!
That would be a great option. So why not just offer both independently - resolution and compression?
Just don't disable the "Resize to fit" switch when "Use Lossy Compression" is off.
I understand the perils with this and I also understand that it's kind of counterproductive to the thought of a RAW/DNG file. But in the end, isn't it about flexibility and not purity of a system? Bring on some big fat warnings that make it clear to the user: "you are now leaving the path of a non-destructive file format!" But let the user decide.
For more safety you could even add the need to unlock this functionality in the Preferences.
    Side note:
There have been plenty of high-res DSLRs so far, Nikon D3X, Canon 5D MkII, 1Ds MkIII, Sony SLT-A77, SLT-A55, NEX-7, Alpha A-850 Alpha A-900 - but none of them seems to have stirred up the discussion about need and sanity of high megapixel DSLRs like the D800 now does.
It's probably because it's the highest so far and Nikon offers no lower resolution RAW as Canon does. What most seem to agree on however is that the high megapixel count can be nice for many and provides flexibility, but it can also be a burden at the same time.
No idea why Nikon don't offer sRAW like Canon do. But considering all this, a flexible option for smaller DNGs with individually settable compression and/or Resize would be a tremendous accomplishment!

  • PSA being shot outside my building

Snapshots to follow (when I get home tonight).
Seeing that Arri on rails with a HUGE piece of glass on the front, all about six inches off the ground, in the street, at a very busy intersection, was pretty amazing. All of the people standing around, waiting to spring back into action when it was time to move. People trying to keep cars from running into and over the cameraman in the street. A guy with a Canon 5D Mark III on a Zacuto rig taking shots for the "behind the scenes" story.
I have no idea how they can possibly get anyone to sign any releases. Not in Downtown Oakland. Almost everyone would want to get paid. Even if just "spare change" or cigarettes. But they weren't blocking anyone from crossing the street in front of the talent. The idea was that the talent is blind and can't get across the street. Or something like that. I believe it is for one of the Diabetes associations.
I didn't see what the second camera was. Hopefully my shots will be clear enough to see the name on the body when blown up a bit.
I am having autofocus problems with my GH3. I hope I don't have to send it in for repair. I can't always use manual focus. Mostly, but not always. I noticed it last weekend but thought it was a low light issue. Today I was shooting at f/11 to f/18 at 1/250 or more. So low light was not an issue.
As I said, I will see what kind of shots I got and post them. I know guys like Bill and Rod have seen this stuff a thousand times. But it is the first close up look I have had at a camera that size in use by people who look like they might know what they are doing. Especially that low to the ground. But from what I could see in the remote monitor, it was a pretty cool angle.

    Craig,
I faced the ridiclule of those, who thought that my wife was glamorous, including my young wife. They would pour over my travel schedules, and fawn - such fabulous places, like shooting resorts in Aspen and Vail, shooting a big, multi-projector slide show for an international sales event in Hawai`i. That sort of thing.
Well, I had a simple shot on the California Coast (location to be determined), that was just a background for a studio shot of a model of a "sand castle power plant." Half-day, at the most, as soon as I found the right location. My wife had some time off, and wanted to go. I promised her 2 days of location scouting, then a half-day shooting, and finally four days of vacation between Monterey and San Francisco. She bought into the plan, and would finally get to see what her husband did for a living.
We arrived at SFO about 9:00PM, but United had lost my camera gear, which was sent as "checked luggage." I have tried every known shipping program, known to man, at the time, and that usually was the best. We spent another 4 hours at SFO, waiting for the last flight from Denver. The stuff did arrive, but we got to the hotel about 1:30AM, and the only room available was above the bar, which featured live Country Music, until about 4:00AM. That was about the time that we got up, since we needed to scout locations. We started in Marin County (Steven can fill in details there. We drove down to Seventeen Mile Drive, below Monterey. Finally, I found just what I needed, at Carmel River Beach, with Point Lobos in the background. Fine, we had the location, and all in one long day.
Back then, I subscribed to a "weather window forecast service," that had always been 100%. Unfortunately, they had missed that the marine layer would not pull out, allowing the shot, by quite a bit. I called them, and told them exactly where I was, and asked about that pesky marine layer. The explained that the marine layer would not move out for another four days! I wanted to find another location, from which to shoot. I explained what I needed, and asked for extra help. Ensanada was their answer. "Ensanada? Is that near Monterey?" "No, it's at the top of Baja, CA," was the reply. OK, that was far too many miles, so I asked about going North. "Vancover," was the answer. "Vancover, like in British Columbia?" "Yeah, that's the one. Again, too many miles away. Next question, "When will the marine layer pull out here?" Thursday, at 10:00AM, and then you have a 30 min. window to shoot, before it pulls back again."
Well, since they had missed the marine layer, I checked into a B&B in Carmel. The next morning (I figured that I could shoot between about 8:30AM and Noon, and the lighting could work with my model), we moved the 4 x 5 to that spot on the beach. The parking lot was about 0.5 miles down the beach, from where I wanted to shoot. We schleped the gear, and I set things up. We waited and waited, and like Accuweather stated, the marine layer never pulled back. No shots that day, or the next. Wife got tired to helping me carry the gear down the beach, then back, with not one sheet of film exposed. While I waited, and waited, she surveyed the surroundings. We were below a rather high bluff, but it had a winding stairway down from a little parking lot at the top. She left, went to a hardware store and bought some rope, and pulleys. The next day, we rigged those items, at the top of the bluff, and I lowered the gear down to the beach. Again, we waited. The people at the B&B gave her extra blankets to wrap up in, since it was very cool, and sitting all day, it was tough to keep warm. We were back the next day - the day that the marine layer was supposed to pull back. At almost exactly 10:00AM, it did, and I shot, and shot.
As I wanted some seagulls in the shot, I had my wife run into the cold Pacific surf, as the waves pulled back, then throw crackers against the on-shore breeze, only to get the heck out of each shot. She finally began to time things correctly, and the gulls would swoop for those crackers, just as she'd clear my frame. Got the shot! Unfortunately, the AD chose one, with no seagulls. I mean, who knew? She took that AD off my guest list for her Annual Gumbo Festival, for at least two years - and he loved her gumbo too!
We now only had time to do a rapid excursion to San Francisco, before having to fly back. She vowed that she would NEVER be my assistant on a shoot ANYWHERE! At least she realized that I was not just hanging out in Aspen, yucking it up with the models. Maybe that kept our marriage going for 43 years?
Yeah, I always hoped to experience "glamour," at some point, but guess that I never did.

  • Problems after installing SLT SP05 - service iuuc_repl_mon_schema_oif

    Hello,
just to share the issue... I just applied SP05 to our SLT system and I am getting following error when clicking on details of replicated system:
The following error text was processed in system IDE:
ICF service node "/sap/bc/webdynpro/sap/iuuc_repl_mon_schema_oif" does not exist (see SAP Note 1109215)
    Requested service does not exist.
Also all SAP notes fixing SLT that were applied on top of SP04 are in inconsistent status. Re-implementation is not possible because some code was modified by SP05 and I consider de-implementation risky because I can unintentionally remove code delivered as part of SP05.
To eliminate hypothesis that root cause of this issue can be SAP notes - I installed SLT SP05 into fresh SAP IDES system and defined replication to newly installed HANA database - result is same.
I have suspicion that possible root cause might be the fact that I implemented both SP05 packages (T1 and T2) together in one queue but this one is not confirmed.
I do not expect solution (I opened SAP message for this) but I would like to share the experience (especially if you are planning upgrade SLT to SP05). Also I would like to ask if you already updated to SP05 and did not encounter this issue to share the procedure you used (this might help to see what was done differently and what might therefore be the root cause).
    Thanks
    Tomas

    Hi Tomas,
I've had also this problem using transaction LTR or iuuc_replication_config. But solution is described in SAPnote 1109215.
You have to do following steps (on SLT system):
    1. Go to transaction SE80
    2. Change to: Web Dynpro Comp. / Intf.
    3. I*
    4. Choose IUUC_REPL_MON_SCHEMA_OIF
    5. Check IUUC_REPL_MON_SCHEMA_OIF -> Web Dynpro Applications -> iuuc_repl_mon_schema_oif
    6. Next "Goto -> HTTP Service Maintenance"
    7. If the node does not exist, the system issues the query: "ICF node for service "..." does not exist. Do you want to create it?"
    8. Choose "Yes"
If you do this steps you'll be able to access another windows in Configuration & Monitoring Dashboard.

  • Problem with lag in E71 autofocus

The autofocus doesn't seem to be working properly with my E71. I press T and wait for the frame to turn green but after I click the picture there is a lag of about 6-7 seconds and the picture quality is very poor. If I don't use autofocus there is no problem.
Anyone else have the same problem. I have tried a hard reset but it hasn't made a difference. Is this some software issue that will be fixed with firmware or is it a hardware problem? Thanks for any suggestions.

Same problem here. I tried also with 3rd party camera softwares and it does not improve. Thus, the problem is at least at FW level. I won't think it's an hardware problem because in the video mode, capture is ok.
also even though you don't autofocus, if you move the camera while shooting, it freezes again and takes a picture few seconds later..If you set flash mode always on, the flash light goes off randomly.
Let's hope in a FW update.
