Sluggish Gaming w/ New MB

Blew BIOS on old MB (Ouch!), finished rebuilding PC w/ new MB and larger HD. All other parts were snagged from old system. Only problem so far is gaming... jerky graphics when running games requiring CD in order to play. Graphic display seems fine elsewhere. For example, I edit large storyboards (Word documents) w/ graphics on every page. No problems.
Rebuild Steps:
1) Yanked old MB, installed new.
2) Formatted/partitioned new 40GB HD, installed OS...successful boot.
3) Connected devices, installed drivers, etc. Tried to use 80-pin data cable w/ new HD, connector didn't want to remain seated on MB. Touch it- lose it. Yanked it and installed w/ 40-pin cable.
4) Successful boot, OS seemed stable...
5) Installed old boot HD as Slave on IDE2, changed BIOS to boot from HD on IDE 1 only (the HD can't be booted from new system), and painfully started copying data files to new HD on Partition 2. Removed old boot disk, installed formatted HD to use for backing up system... whenever I figure the system is stable, I'll do a b/u.
Will save old boot HD for a while in case I forgot about any data files.
Troubleshooting:
1) Checked drivers to make sure all installed correctly (yes)
2) Checked System Report and Device Manager for probem areas... none
(Except for integrated LAN hardware, which I've disabled)
3) Increased paging file size (no difference)
4) Checked VGA settings- (are set to full acceleration)
5) Tried game CD in both CD drives (same result)
6) Checked boot logs and Event Reports for any hint... because of course- getting through all this wasn't quite as problem free as I've detailed here.
Questions
Do you think the problem is video related, or device related?
Could it be related to how the drives are connected to controller?
Should I put both HD on IDE1, and CD's on IDE2? Should I insist on using that fussy 80-pin data cable?
Am I missing something really STUPID?
Would appreciate input from any of you hardware gurus!
Thanks...

Well, an example of overclock RAM would trying to run a stick of PC66 in a celeron or pentium board that is set for 100FSB. Or like the old P-200 I was given a while back, someone had it so messed up it was registering a P-210
They even had the PCI clock set at 43MHz, no wonder it crashed or locked up every few minutes. After I reset everything back to what it should have been set at, the only trouble I ever had from that dinosaur was the video would crap out after a while. Most likely from the video card getting damaged from overclocking.
Even the new PC3200 can be run at a setting that is higher than it was designed to run by increasing the FSB too high. Most RAM has a little overhead on the speed it will at, above what it is specified. IE: PC133 can generally go up to about 143MHz before it starts acting up, but it depends on the quality of the components that are used during manufacturing. Some will start giving errors at 134MHz.
I have even seen some RAM that claimed to be PC133/100/66 compatible, yet would not run in a PC100 slot with another stick of PC100.
Mixing single sided RAM with double sided can also cause problems on some systems.
As you have probably figured out by now, building a computer is not rocket science, but a lack of correct settings can create a vast range of problems.

  • Recent Security update causes sluggish response in new computer

I recently ran the latest security update, and ever since my laptop has been sluggish. Simple things like trying to open a document on the internal HD, or open an external drive aliased to my desktop, give me a whirling colorwheel.
This is a new laptop and I didnt have these kind of issues before the security update, so I'm guessing thats the cause. I verified disk permissions after the update.
    Anyone else having this problem?
    Thanks
    Duane

I verified disk permissions after the update.
Try repairing permissions and restarting your computer. If that does not work, try booting from your install disc & run _*Repair Disk*_ from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select _*Disk Utility.*_
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click *First Aid.*
    Click _*Repair Disk.*_
    Restart your computer when done.

  • MSI GTX 960 GAMING 100ME new BIOS

I’ve bought MSI GTX 960 GAMING 100ME and I have question about BIOS of this card. Some time ago MSI announced that the’re releasing a new BIOS for GTX 960 increases clock speeds. New default clock speed are set at 1241 MHz default (1190 MHz old), and boost closk are set at 1304 MHz against 1253 MHz old bios.
    http://www.computerbase.de/2015-02/msi-geforce-gtx-960-gaming-erhaelt-neues-bios/
I got card with older version of bios and for now MSI has not yet provided the new BIOS file to download. I know that cards with new bios are in stores. Example:
    http://www.hwbox.gr/content/369-msi-gtx-960-100-million-edition-review-page16.html
I know that I could use MSI Gaming APP which on OC Mode will give me 1241MHz and 1303 MHz at Boost. But I don’t like this software. I’m using LCD profile created by Spyder 3 Elite, and MSI Gamming APP disabling my profile, and I have load it up manually. So this software sucks.
So, when new bios will be available for download?

Sorry, cannot help to answer this
However: provide your current vBIOS (use GPUz to make copy of it) and S/N of the card.
    Little GPUz guide:
Maybe Svet knows a bit more about this..
If he doesn't have latest vBIOS that was, apparently, announced by MSI, then you have to wait for their answer.

  • Z97 Gaming 7 New build

    Hi All
Old user (mechwookie) here, seeking maybe a little guidance.
I'm finally getting a enw build from my trusty P35 Neo3 FR and Q6600 combo.
    It will consist of:
    Z97 Gaming 7 mobo
i5 4690 (not sure if going for the K version yet)
16gb DDr3 (probably will stick with stock speed 1600mhz Ram) Geil Black Dragon Ram
MSI GTX 960 2gb OC VGA card
I'll be retaining my current drives and PSU (which is less than 1yr old)
    Novatech Powerstation V2 600w Modular
    Samsung 840 Evo 120gb
    WD 1tb 7200 (main storage/backup)
    Samsung Spinpoint 200gb 7200 (photo's and music)
    Samsung Spinpoint F2 500gb 7200 (video)
Cooling the CPU will be a Corsair H60 unit, all enclosed in my current case, a Bitfenix Comrade case.
Now I currently have 3 120mm fans providing airflow (2 filtered to the front intake, 1 exhaust)to my Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 Pro on the Q6600.
The fans are currently a mish mash of types. The 120 original exhaust that came with the Comrade, an old Akasa 120 (at least 4 yrs old) and a Cougar CF-V12HP PWM fan.
Now when I do build this, because of where its going and what i can physically do for airflow, I will set up a push pull on the H60, having it as an exhaust fan while having two new fans in the front as intake again.
    so, question is::::
Am I likely to get any issues running two Cougar CF-V12HP's off a splitter from a single fan header from the Gaming 7 as i'd like to control them from the bios?
Also, is it worth getting the 2 intake fans as PWM for quietness at low rpm, or just have two non PWM's which will mean they end up likely at full speed unless i set then at a lower level in the bios...?

    Well, PWM fans ordered.
now i need to finalise the rest.
Now looking at changing the Ram and cpu to
16 gb dual channel Kingston HyperX Savage 2400Mhz
    i5 4690K
It will give me some room to play with the OC if i should then wish.
It also bumps me from under £570 ish to £610
As for the brand, I couldn't really tell you the exact brand they use, Novatech is the supplier who have a PSU branded for them to retail.
Have seen a post that mentions they might be what used to be the OCZ Modstream psu's, but cannot confirm this.
    And this is it:

  • Firefox is incredibly choppy and sluggish on a new computer. Why is this happening?

I bought a brand new laptop a few weeks ago. For some reason, Firefox is very choppy and slow, especially when I'm scrolling on websites. I noticed there are more problems when I am websites with a lot of image/video content such as Facebook. The weird thing is, when I use other browsers, it seems to work just fine (no laggy UI, no choppy scrolling).
This problem is incredibly annoying and I have been dealing with it for the last few weeks. My guess is it has to do with Windows 8.1 - I'm ready to just give up after trying all other fixes. I have even started my browser up with all Add-Ons disabled. The issue is still there. The only add-on I am running is Adblock.
    Thanks.

  • GTX 780 Ti Gaming 3G new bios??

Hi i buy GTX 780 Ti Gaming 3G  but I see that there are two bios for this card??
    1.80.80.30.00.2C
    2.80.80.30.00.30
why there are two bios for this card ,Are both original .
Will it work the second bios on my card (Nvflash) if I put it.
How It Works Gaming APP  in the second bios?
what frequencies work OC model (gaming app) with second bios?
P.P -lol here one more   80.80.34.00.0E
and all the support you  uefi/gop vbios   ?

All these numers are useless and not representing bios versions. The same model can use different versions for different batches (because of different vga ram used or similar production changes). Without your S/N it is impossible to tell which vbios is right for your card. Also to check an actual copy of the vbios currently used is needed.

  • Gaming on new iMac. / Office 2007 files on Mac.

    1)
My brother plays a lot of games and is currently using a N-Vidia GeForce 512MB Graphics Card.
I want to get him the new iMac because his current PC is too outdated (yeah it runs windows, lol). I was wondering whether there is anyway of getting a 512mb or 1gb graphics card into the new iMac?
    2)
Does anyone know how I can open docx files or any other Office 2007 files on Microsoft Office for Mac 2004. I haven't been able to find anything anywhere.
    Thanks.

  • [REQUEST] Msi gtx 970 gaming 4g new bios

I bought a z77 motherboard and gtx 970 won't work in the pci-e 16x slot, but it works fine in pci-e 4x slot. Pci-e 16x slot works with another gpu. Motherboard bios is already latest, so the last thing I can try is to update the gpu bios.
    Thanks.

Unfortunately not. And their support hasn't been much help. All they said is to try and update both bios and vbios, which did nothing. Wouldn't it be a hardware failure if all cards didnt work in the slot? I'm guessing it's a compatibility issue because both gpus are detected, the only difference is that for pci-e speed when gtx 570 is connected it says "x16", and with gtx 970 it's "x0" (seen using iGPU which isn't disabled with gtx 970). It does say "not present" if any of those cards is in the second slot, so there's that. Also, they said that they haven't got any reports of the similar problems with their brand's gtx 970.

  • Moutain Lion sluggish on 2008 macbook

I have a late 2008 macbook unibody with 4GB of RAM installed and upgraded to Moutain Lion from Snow Leopard.
The mac has been very sluggish in opening new apps, waking up from sleep and overal general use.
    1. The initial index is complete ( i upgraded the day the OS came out so i am aware of the initial indexing  which i let the mac complete overnight )
    2. I have run the disk verify and repair permissions steps as recommended in other posts.
The mac has also been running more hotter than it was while Snow Leopard was installed.
I know the following should help me recover my mac speed but i am wondering if i had to select one upgrade, which one should i go for ?
    1. 8 GB RAM upgrade. Current : 4GB
    2. SSD upgrade from my current non-SSD HDD.
    Thank you,
    A

First, be sure you have at least 20-30 GBs of free space on your hard drive. Second, try reinstalling Mountain Lion:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • 970 Gaming bio update

Just received my 970 Gaming motherboard yesterday to start my build tomorrow. Will need a bio update for an AMD 8370. Do I need to install windows before I update, or, can/should I flash it before the install?
    Thanks..

Quote from: daminera on 09-May-15, 06:08:18
I must have gotten lucky as the latest bios was already on it.
Install went well and booted right up.
I just got my own 970 Gaming a few days ago and was also pleasantly surprised to see it was at 2.22 UEFI...  That seems to indicate the board is selling well--my revered G46-AM3+ has been passed to a relative (the wife--she's thrilled with my hand-me-downs--I'm lucky like that), but when I got that board it had shipped with the 1.1 UEFI version, and went through several more successful updates to finalize at UEFI version 2.6--and so I built a little decently-priced value box for myself with the 970 Gaming.  (New Egg had a sale with it 15% off it's $99 regular price--had to pounce...!)
However, I also noticed that MSI is coming out with a newer version of the 970A Gaming, called the 990GFXA Gaming--it's supposed to include the 990FX chipset (instead of the 970FX as is in the 970 Gaming and the G46 and in the Krait.)  The only difference beyond that that I can see is the on-board USB 3.0/3.1 ports (which the Krait has, too.)  But, I figured if I wanted it I can always buy a cheap PCIe/PCI expansion card for it later and wind up with 6-8 3.1 ports for a piddling sum--MSI is using Type A ports for 3.1 as opposed to Type C, ports--and I much prefer A to C.  Besides, NewEgg had no 990FXA Gaming boards in stock or I'd have probably gone ahead and bought it anyway, probably...
OK, so about that "difference" between the 970 & the 990 chipsets (northbridge.)...I keep reading that the chipsets roughly breakdown in differences as follows:
    970    A single PCIe slot @ 16 lanes
    990X  Two PCIe slots @ 16 & 8 lanes respectively (8 x8 when used in tandem with xFire/SLI.)
990FX Two x16 PCIe slots that break down to x16 & 8x when used for xFire/SLI.)
    990GX A 990X that includes an on-board IGP
(Any further enlightenment is always appreciated)... But by these definitions, then, the 970a s950 boards sold in the 970G, the G46, and the Krait, are not really "970" chipsets, but actually they are 990X chipsets, eh?...
Anyway...I decided this time on an FX-8320E, which I am sure will last me until something really nice for the upcoming x86 Zen architecture materializes--where AMD once again has a chance to shine brightly in the cpu performance markets.
OK, I've been very pleased with the board so far--it's what I wanted, actually, not too dissimilar from the 970a-G46.  The boards are a lot a like, but that's A-OK with me because the G46 was a terrific product for the last two + plus years, and as my wife's it is sure to do well for a couple more years at least.
Now it's Q&A, time:  The caveats are: I'm running Windows 10 build 10074 at the moment and Command Center simply doesn't run.  It tries and sputters but just never opens a window--no compatibility modes I've tried make the slightest difference.  Additionally, I can't get Sound Blaster Cinema 2 to work, either.  It runs, deposits an icon in the systray, but after that does nothing--cannot open a screen or use the software in any way--which is a shame because it looks nice, and the piggy backing of the Creative Labs stuff on top of the Realtek stuff is intriguing...!  It's probably just a temporary expense of running the 10 x64 at the moment, but I thought I'd ask just in case anyone else had experienced something similar and found a work-around.

  • Z87 GA45 Gaming isn't recognising hard drive bays

    To starts, my set up specs are;
    Mobo - Z87 GA45 Gaming (brand new)
    CPU - i5 4670k (brand new)
    Ram - 8GB Gskill 1600, 8GB Geil Cobra 1600
Storage- 2TB Seagate 7200rpm HDD, 250GB Samsung EVO SSD
    Case - LianLi Tyr PCX2000
I bought the i5 second hand, but still unused a few weeks ago at a very good price, but of course needed a new mobo to accomodate it, since I was using an older GAX58-UD4P with an i7 920.
Hooked it all up, everything seems to be working apart from the hard drives. The case has 6 hard drive bays that are hot swappable, although I never move them. I have connected the HDD to the power supply and to the mobo correctly. The HDD is spinning up on start up, so it's getting power. However the mobo doesn't recognise that theyre even plugged in.
My cables all work, I plugged into the HDD directly and it recognised straight away with the same cables. I've also tried multiple hard drive bays, all to no avail.
It was suggest I turn on AHCI in the bios, this was already on however. I did put it on IDE mode (no idea what it is tbh) and it did recognise one of the HDD, although it couldn't read any data off it.
Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Quote from: Sea Dog on 24-July-14, 15:26:12
Test outside the case on a piece of plain cardboard or untreated wood then.
It's working fine with it outside the case. Didn't even need to wipe the OS, and it's in AHCI mode. The bays worked perfectly on my old mobo, that was only in my case yesterday....I doubt all 6 have broken in this amount of time.
I'll try and download some updates for the mobo and try again. Are there any old drivers for the Gigabyte mobo that could be causing conflicts that should be deleted?
    EDIT-
I have updated the mobo with everyone on the MSI updater list, it however has made no difference. I have formatted the SSD and cloned my OS partition to it, it works fine when plugged directly in, however same as before, is not detected when plugged into the hot swap hard drive bay

  • PC turns on but no signal on monitor? 970 Gaming Motherboard

So i just upgraded my pc
Corsair Force LX Series 128GB SSD (new)
    XFX R9 280x
    Seagate 1TB HDD (new)
    MSI 970 Gaming MOBO (new)
    16GB Ram
    Windows 8.1 OS (new)
Rosewill ARC M550 550W PSU (new)
So basically when i turn on my pc, all fans are on and the mobo lights up. But the monitor just stays black! So what i do is just hold the power button to turn it off and try to turn it on again. Now this is the weird part... sometimes it turns on and sometimes it doesnt. Sometimes i need to turn off/on for 3 or 4 times for it to turn on. Sometimes i need to do it just once. Its so inconsistence and strange.
    Example:
One day i was just playing a game and suddenly my monitor turns off. The thing is the fans and all is still working. I thought it was the GPU but the fans on the gpu is still on!
My hunch is on the SSD, which holds the OS. But im not sure, could it be the motherboard? My GPU maybe?

So before all this happen, i have a similar setup with different brand of motherboard and PSU. All i bought is a new brand of psu and mobo and i add an SSD. the thing is, i use to have an antec 550w before and my pc just ran fine, no crashes what so over and no problem on boot. But i dont have an ssd back then.
my ram is set to clock speed 1333
i dont think my pc crash, if it did shouldnt my whole pc turns off including all the fans and all? When i was playing the game, my monitor turns black saying no signal but my pc fans, including GPU's fan is running. I have this problem too on boot. When i try to turn on my pc, the pc it self is running (including GPU's fan) but monitor doesnt recieve signals. I have to turn on/off 3-4 times for it to turn on properly. Sometimes it turns on the first time, and sometimes not, its so insistence and strange
If it is my psu, what wattage should it be? Any suggestion that wouldn't break the bank?
I dont think my PC overheats. I have an aftermarket air cooler on my cpu and i have 4 120mm corsair fans running on my carbide air 540. and if it did crash, shouldnt my whole pc turns off? only the display is not getting signals, all my pc components's fan/light is on.

    Slow animations:
    -opening folders
    -locking phone
    -unlockng phone
    -closing folders
    -search bar
-swiping left and right has to be very accurate now because of the swipe down for search engine
    Calendar:
Why am I restricted to this view? I want to be able to view the entire calendar so I can see what's head and plan for it like the simplistic version of iOS 6 calendar. They completed blotched this calendar.

Agreed. The animations make me dizzy and hurt my eyes, also makes the iphone laggy and sluggish. The new Calendar app now is unusable for me, all of my shared calendars are overlapping each other and make it almost impossible to understand at a quick glance - please bring back the old month view and list view.

  • Nokia's price policy of the N900

Folks, in my mind the N900 is *far* too expensive. No doubt, developing such a device may swallow millions, but, for 500 Euros I get a 15" laptop or a netbook with a UMTS stick and flatrate, whereas Nokia offers a telephone with a small 3,5" display.... Being a Linux enthusiast myself I really love the idea of Maemo, but at such a high price? I really wonder whether it is not better to buy a laptop, put openSUSE Linux on it and a UMTS stick, more software, more possibilities, more apps. What would you guys say would be a reasonable price? In my mind between 350 and 400 Euros, 400 being the pain barrier.

    couple of points here:
    1.  when they announced the release of the N900 they immediately dropped the price of the N97 to not be above it.
    2. i dont think that the $600+ dollars in US is a big deal...but here is why
    for the general user/parent/advanced user
    you get a decent camera - $200
you get a decent video recorder - $200
you get a decent audio recorder - $100
you get a decent video player - $100
    you get a great pda - $150
you get a phone - $Free with activation but lets say $100
    you get your sms/mms
you get your social networks integrated - need a laptop for $300
    you get your mp3 player - $50
you get your full internet experience - use the laptop
you get your email - use the laptop
you get your office products (full versions will come for sure ie-word/excel/ppt) - use the laptop
you get your gaming (both new and nastalgae/emulators) - cost of psp/DS/etc with other limitations
you get your instant messangers - use the laptop
you get your gps and navigation - $200
    the list can still grow.
that alone is just $1400 not including the multiple cases and accessories for each, or the bulk you would have to lug around and it is all fairly instant, in the palm of your hand and fits in your pocket.
$600 doesnt sound so bad when you actually use them...actually, it's quite a deal...oh, and free software!
if you like this, kudo it!

  • Unusual permissions repair msg on Leopard

After a couple bumpy weeks on Leopard it's finally stabilizing... but I do need to repair permissions about once per week due to sluggishness after installing new software... and the last two times I've received the same error msg:
    Repairing permissions for “TCR 40G”
Warning: SUID file "usr/libexec/load_hdi" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskManagement.framework/Versions/A/Resources /DiskManagementTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner " has been modified and will not be repaired.
Permissions differ on "private/var/log/secure.log", should be -rw------- , they are -rw-r----- .
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Versions/A/Resources/readconf ig" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Versions/A/Resources/writecon fig" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "usr/libexec/authopen" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
This looks bad to me. Can anyone please advise? I used DiskWarrior in between these last two permission repairs so I was surprised to get the same msg.

Don't worry about this--it is a known issue:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306925
If you do the combo update 10.5.1 from the Apple site, it will get rid of all but one of the SUID warnings. The 10.5.2 update just came out, and it might get rid of the last one--don't know because I haven't downloaded it yet. But you do want to do the combo update from the Apple site rather than using Software Update.
    Good luck!
