Sluggish Internet Activity...DSL performance or another issue?

I am relatively new to Apple (and LOVE it!) now with a MacBook Air and iPhone 5.  I have noticed over the past month or so that my internet connection has been extremely sluggish...even intermittent at times. I have FairPoint DSL.  Is there an easy way to test to see if there is something wrong with my MBA?  I live in a remote area where the population increases during the spring/summer time.  A possible explanation from FairPoint was 'network congestion' in the area.  Also, what is the best application to test connection speed on my MBA?  I use Speedtest by OOKLA on my iPhone, but it doesn't appear available for MBA.  I am thinking of looking into cable.  Thanks in advance!

1. Power cycle

Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly.
     It will take a   while.

  • Can you activate an iphone with one sim, and than once it is activated use it with another sim?

can you activate an iphone with one sim, and than once it is activated use it with another sim?

It could be the activation server is unavailable right now, however have you or anyone else ever used that computer to jailbreak or hack another phone? That can have an affect on the hosts file. You can check this regarding information on the hosts file or security software problems.
    Error 1 or -1
This may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow Troubleshooting security software issues, and restore your device on a different known-good computer. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
This device is not eligible for the requested build (Also sometimes displayed as an "error 3194")
Update to the latest version of iTunes. Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) users may need to download iTunes 10.6.3.
Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, follow Troubleshooting security software issues.
Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to perform unauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. Uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer.
Edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from your hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect. For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > Mac OS X > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart.
Avoid using an older or modified .ipsw file. Try moving the current .ipsw file (see Advanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations), or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw.
    Error 3014
This error occurs when iTunes is unable to reach gs.apple.com in a timely fashion. Follow the steps below in Unable to contact the iOS software update server gs.apple.com.

  • GE60 0ND, 100% HDD activity ruins performance and start up time

    MSi GE60 0ND-463UK
    i7 3630QM
    GTX 660M
    16GB Corsair Vengeance RAM 1600Mhz
Basically lately my laptop has begun starting up with 100% HDD activity and the odd occasion with it as well and that completely hults my laptops performance and is VERY ANNOYING, this ever happened before so I'm assuming something has gone wrong and would hope someone can help identify the issue.
The most common cause of my 100% HDD activity and laptop performance dip is: System (ntoskrnl) NT Kernal and System.
Also have another issue that makes me close to strangling a random person and that is updating and reconfiguring can take 30 MINUTES TO AN HOUR TO DO..................................... ............... Please tell me there is a solution for this, as I can't be the only person with this issue.

The 100% HDD activity sounds really strange.....Almost sounds like there is something else going on. Like you have a virus or trojan.
As far as the updating and reconfiguring, there's a thread here SOMEWHERE (I can't remember the name, but it's in the notebooks forum) that explains how to fix it. I would do a forum search in this forum for "Windows 8 updating reconfiguring" and you should be able to find it there. You're not the only person who has had this issue.

  • Constant Internet Activity ???

First, please understand I am highly geek-i-ly challenged.
I've noticed that there is constant internet activity (connection icons blinking) when I am running NM.
If I shut NM down, there is no activity.
Question:  What kind of activity could this be?  Is NM just sending and receiving "confirmed connection" packets or what????
It seems to send 2 packets and receive 1 or 2 back.  Where is it sending them and who or what is sending what back?????
I use Windows XP Home (SP3), Linksys WRT54G ver 6, Firmware 1.02.5 hard wired router, Embarq DSL connection with Embarq supplied modem, and have NM version 5.1.9055 installed.
Any help is appreciated.  Now go have a great day.
    Bill

Hi, NM sends out packets to your routers and other devices on your network to get the infomation used to build the network map and to monitor your network.
    My Cisco Network Magic Configuration:
Router: D-Link WBR-2310 A1 FW:1.04, connected to Comcast High Speed Internet
Desktop, iMac: NM is on the Windows Partition, using Boot camp to access Windows, Windows 7 Pro 32-bit RTM, Broadcom Wireless N Card, McAfee Personal Firewall 2009,
Mac Partition of the iMac is using Mac OS X 10.6.1 Snow Leopard
Laptop: Windows XP Pro SP3, Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG, McAfee Personal Firewall 2008
Please note that though I am a beta tester for Network Magic, I am not a employee of Linksys/Cisco and am volunteering my time here to help other NM users.

  • WRV54G: Log all internet activity to syslog

I purchased this product specifically because it claimed to be able to log internet activity to a syslog server.
    I have the product configured:
    - syslog server set up
    - WRV54G is talking to syslog server
    - only configuration activity with WRV54G is being logged (ie only activity to 192.168.1.1)
    - Under General Log, all boxes are checked
To test the logging, I created a deny rule to a specific site, and accessed this site. WRV54G denied the connection but did not log, even though it is set to log all denies.
I want to log ALL activity to my syslog server. How do I configure this? Is this a defect?
Message Edited by riprowan on 06-29-2007 09:16 AM

What is "logviewer.exe"? It has no help, no readme, no explanation, no way to configure it. WTF is this application? At any rate, I have a syslog server. The WRV54G is logging to it, just not all of the data it's supposed to be logging. I don't need another application. Apparently the latest firmware is what is causing my problem. Please see this conversation about exactly the problem I am experiencing: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r18431113-SYSLOG-on-a-WRV54G This is a basic feature of the product (in fact, this is why I bought the product) so I expect it to work. What is the status of this bug and when will it be addressed?

  • Internet activity indicator? (using AirPort)

Hi all, is there any little application that will show internet activity using my 17 powerbook (OSX panther + airport)?
problem is, sometimes if I click to view a quicktime/wmv movie etc, I am not sure if anything is actually downloading.
Normally i can see the light on the broadband modem blinking, indicating activity, but my modem is in another part of the building when I use my powerbook.
    any ideas?
    cheers, Robert

I use MenuMeters available from http://www.ragingmenace.com/software/menumeters/ for this very purpose and it works great. It can also be configured to show disk activity. Very cool little program, released under the GPL for free (although the author does accept donations!).

  • Why won't Apple allow an app like Covenant Eyes to monitor internet activity on the Safari browser on iOS?

Why won't Apple allow an app like Covenant Eyes to monitor internet activity on the Safari browser on iOS?

Yes, that is the app.  It is used to monitor your internet activity, but because Apple won't allow an app like Covenant Eyes to monitor the Safari browser or any other browsers the Covenant Eyes app has to be its own browser which causes some issues.  You can't click on a link and have it open because the iOS tries to open Safari by default when you do that.
I'm just wondering if there is anywhere on Apple's website that discusses this type of thing, why they don't allow an app like Covenant Eyes to monitor the Safari browser.  The Covenant Eyes program for Macs will monitor internet activity on the computer.

  • Recent very sluggish internet connection.

I usually get nearly 20mb/s internet performance (FIOS) but recently its dropped to about 2mb/s. I checked the console logs and I am getting constant logs similar to the one below (several times per minute). Could these console messages be causing my slow connection speed and if so how can I correct this. Not an expert but I think the console message is from my router trying to connect to a UDP port on my IMAC. The UDP port number varies quite a bit but the connection attempt always comes from the same 192.168.1.1:53 address. I have other PC's and MACS on our home network and iPhones but just the IMac is experiencing the slow speeds.
Any help or thoughts would be most appreciated.
    Orrin
    Typical Console Log:
10/20/09 11:44:17 PM Firewall[882] Stealth Mode connection attempt to UDP 192.168.0.101:53118 from 192.168.1.1:53

Here is one fix for sluggish internet that has worked for some.
Go Finder > Your HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration.
Move the SystemConfiguration folder to your Desktop.
    Restart.
Try your browser. You may have to reconnect to your wireless network if applicable. And, you may need to go System Preferences > Sharing and re-enter your computer's name. Check what name is given in sharing before following my instructions. If problems develop, then your can move the original folder back where it started—overwriting any folder recreated.

  • FiOS Internet Activation fee NOT Waived - New Customer

Until Apr-2015, 2014 we were using residential services of a competitor ISP and experienced very poor customer service and many hidden billing charges. We had to live with it because our apartment doesn't have the setup for other service providers. So we decided to switch to a different provider once the lease ended and we chose Verizon because of its exceptional Internet sped and Quuality customer service. On 07/09/2015 I placed an order Verizon FiOS for my new apartment and was exceited! The order was palced through a local FiOS agent and I chose the FiOS double pay (50/50 package). Over the phone I was very specific to ask for any hidden charges and the agent mentioned no hidden charges and I would be paying the Bundle price plus rent for router and set-top-box. I also checked if there would be any installation or activation and the Agent did mention that it will all be waived for 'New-Customers'. To double confirm, I called up the verizon customer service the same day and they mentioned the same. Thinking it was hassle-free, I requested my agent to place an order. When I received my first bill, I found a charge of $69.99 for FiOS Internet Activation Fee split into 3 months with first installment of $23.33. I assumed it could be an error or usual routine and hoped it would be waived if I call up and request (like the competitor). I reached out to an agent via chat initially and explained the situation. To my surprise I was told that there are 'no notes in the order mentioning the activation fee will be waived, so it cannot be honored'. Surpsied and shocked, I called up the customer service and mentioned the same story again. This time the answer was 'We never mentioned this will be waived and have never waived for any customers. Like others, this charge has to be paid'. I insisted that the local agent and the customer service agent I spoke on 07/09/2015 did mention that the activation fee would be waived. It is also clearly mentioned here that activatoin fee will be waived for Double-Pay (See attached image and link below http://www.verizon.com/home/bundles/fios)  I am very disappointed and just tired of making phone calls and debating with custoomer service. The only reason I switched to verizon was there is a lot of transparency, no surprises and BEST CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. And I wouldn't ask for something I am not entitled to or promised initially. And, If this is what I am going to experience with Verizon to get this waiver or any other reason, I could very well manage to stay with the competitior so there are no disappointments :-(. I am hereby requesting the team to validate this and give a better solution for a new-customer who switched services to Verizon and willing to continue for a longer duration.

    Hi Sriniragav,
Your issue has been escalated to a Verizon agent. Before the agent can begin assisting you, they will need to collect further information from you. Please go to your profile page for the forum and look at the top of the middle column where you will find an area titled "My Support Cases". You can reach your profile page by clicking on your name beside your post, or at the top left of this page underneath the title of the board.
Under "My Support Cases" you will find a link to the private board where you and the agent may exchange information. The title of your post is the link. This should be checked on a frequent basis, as the agent may be waiting for information from you before they can proceed with any actions. To ensure you know when they have responded to you, at the top of your support case there is a drop down menu for support case options. Open that and choose "subscribe". • Internet activity during boot-up

This is an easy question that someone ought to be able to answer.
I notice that during boot-up I get a fair amount of internet activity (the "act" light on my DSL modem flashes as does the "enet" light). This happens after the grey screen goes to blue and continues a bit after the dock appears.
What is this? Should I worry? I assume it is network startup and perhaps software checking for updates?
I'm running OS 10.3.9. I have MS Office installed and the usual complement of Apple "iXXX" programs. I do not subscribe to tha Apple internet service.
    Thanks.

    Ken:
My guess is that as the computer is booting it is checking all disks and the entire network, hence the flashing lights on your DSL modem.
Maybe someone else has a better or more technically correct response. I'll stay tuned.
    Good luck.

  • Rim.desktop.exe high cpu usage and internet activity

What the heck is going on with desktop 6 software? Rim.Desktop.exe is running 10-20% cpu utilization and my router lights are blinking like crazy. It won't shut down right away while this is going on either. I have to force the shutdown to close the app and stop the internet activity. This goes on when my phone is connected or not. Storm 9530.
    Dean

    Thanks for the quick reply.
If you do not have that 3rd party add-on running, do you notice a difference in the cpu usage? or network connectivity?
Also did you experience any of these problems with running with DTM 5.0.1
The only network connection that Desktop Manager uses is to register the PIN number and to check for updates and down the new updates.  But it does not continue constantly.
I would see if you can use BlackBerry Desktop Software without the 3rd party add-on unless you tried before, to see if it's a third party add-on causing the issue or Desktop Manager.
I look forward to your results.

  • WRT600N: Diagnosing Constant "Internet" Activity

I have a WRT600N connected to a Scientific Atlanta Model DPX110 cable modem and I'm seeing constant "internet" activity between my router and the cable modem.  The intenet activity light is banging like crazy on the router and the "PC/LAN" light on the cable modem is also banging like mad.  Have disabled all wrieless interfaces and disconnected every network connection from the router except that of the cable modem.  Have also cycled power on both the cable modem and router a number of times just to make sure nothing is stuck in a wierd state.  Basically, nothing I have done seems to get rid of this constant activity between the router and modem.  I'm pretty sure the activity is not coming in from the WAN side of the modem as I'm not seeing any comparable activity on the modems "Cable/WAN" activity light.  Not sure exactly when the behavior began, but I'm pretty sure this was not happening in the past.  Also upgraded to the latest WRT600N firmware to see if that helps, but it did not.  Any suggestions on how to diagnose what this traffic is between my cable modem and WRT600N short of a network sniffer?  Is there some way to make the router log this activity for me to view?  I initially assumed the activity was being caused by the router, but now am beginning to wonder if if might be the cable modem doing it...  Anyway,  any suggestions appreciated.  Thanks!

Yeah, I had considered doing that and may still do so shortly.  Was just a bit concerned with bypassing the hardware firewall in case the cable modem has somehow been compromised.  Thought there might be a way to see what the "internet" traffic is before allowing the cable modem direct access to my PC.  Paranoid, I know...
May try hooking directly to my PC shortly...  but first I believe I'll need to locate and install the original network card to which the cable service is keyed.  Haven't seen it in some time as I've long since had a Linksys cable router with MAC address spoofing in use.  Will provide updates on what I find.
    Thanks for the feedback!
