Sluggish MB Pro 13" on Internet

I have a MBP 13" that seems to run very slowly on the internet, even when I'm just checking the mail. Firefox is the browser. We have another Mac in the house with a slightly faster proc. and more memory and it is blazing fast.
The proc. on the slow machine is 2.26 intel core duo, with 2 GB RAM. I've run the latest version of Cocktail, and installed all the recent updates possible.
Thanks for any help!

Use a web site like http://www.speedtest.net/ to check your online speeds. Before spending $$ on ram that you might not need (not for internet speeding up in any case), try using OpenDNS servers.
System Preferences>Network>Advanced>DNS.
Click the + in the left side column and add:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
Click OK, then click Apply.

  • I want to connect my Mac Book Pro to the internet in France without any wifi connection available? Mi Fi? Sim card?

I want to connect my Mac Book Pro to the internet in France without any wifi connection available? Mi Fi? Sim card? All we have is a phone signal in this rural French location. I want to be able to Skype to states from there. We have a friend with a 3G ipad who uses an Orange sim card to do it. I would rather not have to buy an Ipad.
    thanks

I found out that the data package for one month useage with MiFi is 1G. How many minutes of online time does that correspond to?

  • How do I connect my MacBook pro to the Internet through the 3G server on my iPhone?

Does anyone know how to connect my MacBook pro to the Internet through the 3G server on my iPhone?

There is a service called Personal Hotspot that uses your iPhone's connection to share with other devices. You will need to sign up for this service through your carrier. Good luck

    Hi,
Simply put(copy) the content of the UVIsoundbaks folder to where you want it. Then delete the original content. Make aliases of the content at its' new location, and move (copy) all those aliases back into the originating folders. Then delete the original aliases. That should do it.
    I'm confused about this.
First, I put the content where I want. Got it.
    Then delete it?
I don't have the room to put it where the application tells me to put it (not enough room on the HD), so I need to put the sample content on a external hard drive.
    Please advise.
    Thanks

  • My Macbook Pro 13" lost Internet connection last night. Why?

My Macbook Pro 13" lost Internet connection last night. It's still out today, but my mother's Windows machine still gets it just fine. What happened to my Mac? The folks at Comcast told me it's a problem for Apple to fix. I'm hoping someone here can give me some insight.

see if there is anything for you.

This has happened to me with a few downloads without any upsets.
    You should be OK.
As I recall the download is around 1.2 gig so it takes a bit of time and effort to get it to your system.

Whenever I connected my Magic Mouse to my Macbook Pro Retina, the Internet does't work right away,
and while I disconnected the Mouse, it works immediately......
Does anyone has the same prob. or know why it happens?
Please help me out and thanks for your kindness!

But I tested, I clicked a link and it started loading, and when I got the Mouse connected, it stops the process and got stuck...
And I clicked a link again, now with the mouse connected, it stuck forever, and when disconnected the mouse, it immediately works!

  • I installed my new iMac with my Macbook Pro 2008 backup and created a network with the iMac and now the Macbook Pro cannot get internet.

I installed my new iMac with my Macbook Pro 2008 back up.  I created a iMac network with Airport extreme, but now my Macbook Pro cannot get internet.  any ideas on why or what to do about it.

    Hello 1BillyMac,
It seems you have a network conflict that isn't allowing your MacBook Pro to connect to the internet. This may be caused by both computers sharing identical network settings. You may want to consider creating a new network location on your MacBook Pro to assign new network settings. The following article will instruct you on how to do that:
OS X Yosemite: Add a network location
A network location is a group of network settings
A network location is a group of network settings for your various network services (Ethernet or Wi-Fi for example).
If you often change network settings, you may find switching between locations quicker and easier than repeatedly modifying individual groups of settings.
For example, you might want to make a location for “home,” where you connect to the Internet with a telephone modem, and a location for “office,” where you connect to your company network and the Internet using Ethernet or AirPort.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Network.
Click the Location pop-up menu, choose Edit Locations, then click Add .
Enter a name for the location, then click Done.
Enter settings for each network connection service you want to use in that location.
After you create your locations, you can switch all of your network settings by clicking the Location pop-up menu and choosing a different location.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,

  • How can I speed up my sluggish MacBook Pro?

I installed Mavericks last year and my MacBook Pro seems to be getting more and more sluggish, especially with the Adobe Creative Suite. Lately InDesign has been crashing on a regular basis. I used to be able to run several programs simultaneously, but now have to be cautious. Any suggestions?

I was running EtreCheck when I saw your reply. :-) Here are the results.

You might want to try Dr Web Light (http://www.freedrweb.com/drweb+mac+light) and use this to Scan your Mac to see if it can detect the malware
It detects the installer as "Trojan.Vindinstaller.1" but it did not find the extensions in my setup.  It's Adware, not malware.
You might also consider installing Anti Virus software that also offers real time protection so that it will reduce the chances of you getting infected in the future.
And will also make your computer experience sluggish, but he needs to educate himself on the threat and weigh the impact of using real-time protection.
I recommend installing avast! Free anti Virus for Mac for this. (http://www.avast.com)  Avast does an excellent job at detecting Mac malware that is out there on the web.
Although you are right about Avast! being an excellent detector, it's also well known for false alarms, even detecting infected file in a clean OS X installation with nothing else added. It's also been implicated in draining laptop batteries over night, so users need to be cautioned to double-check any file labeled as infected to make certain it isn't critical to an intended purpose and keep laptops on the charger when left to sleep overnight.
Just note that you should still be careful on the web even if you do have Anti Virus software installed. Even though the software may catch most malicious software some may get through.
That's probably the best tip you've given. Don't install A-V software thinking it will make you impervious to infections. OS X will protect you against all currently known malware, but it can't do anything against something brand new. Neither will the best of the commercially provided A-V software. Practice safe computing no matter what you use.

  • My brand new mac pro always had Internet connection issues at school. WHY is that? I see the school's Internet working perfectly fine on other PC's, but there is never a day where my mac doesn't have Internet connection issues at school. How do I fix it?

I got my mac pro in the middle of August. School started the week after. Internet was working perfectly fine at home. But at school, I never had a good connection. Sometimes on the good days I get a connection when I'm sitting at the exact spot in class I always sit at. It's ridiculous and it's frustrating. I invested my money into this laptop and I'm beginning to regret it. I thought it was the school's Internet, but I don't see Internet issues with other PC users. It's most frustrating on registration days and I'm trying to register for my classes before it gets taken, but again... Internet connection issues. It's random. Majority of the time, it doesn't work at all. I've done Network Diagnosis and turning WiFi off then turning it on again. I've done everything I could. I put my money on this laptop and it was a lot of money. I could have bought an 800 dollars laptop and I would have Internet connection anywhere on campus. So, I don't want to continue everyday to regret on buying this laptop every time I try to connect to the Internet at school or Starbucks or anywhere else. How do I fix this? What's the problem ?
At school, I heard this guy had a problem with Internet connections too and he owned a new mac book pro. He said something like Apple messed up on something, but he fixed it. If I knew mac book pro's had these issues I wouldn't have bought it in the first place. It's freezing on me every other day. It's ridiculous. But what concerns me the most is the Internet connection. So someone please tell me what can I do next to prevent the problem? Am I doing something wrong maybe?

    Hi Kevin,
I'm using an XLR input mic which is connected to the phantom power enabled XLR mic socket on a USB M-Audio M-Track. The M-Track is connected by USB to the Mac Pro - so effectively I've got an M-Audio USB soundcard with a mic input.  I've also tried a microphone that is a straight XLR to USB cable (guessing with some soundcard chip buried in the usb plug) but that also yields the same effect of bad latency, intermittent quality, stuttering and repeating and echoing (without the speakers on during record so its not feedback).
The mic works absolutely fine with other recording applications I have on the mac at the moment - albeit non-adobe ones (tested it on the EasyAudioRecorder - and it lives up to its name. it's easy)
I will try with Audition and report back, but sitting here right now I can imagine it would work fine with audition too - it just seems to be the way premiere is set up for recording into the timeline is a bit sketchy.  I'm willing to accept it might well be a quirk with the new Mac Pro trashcan - I'm not weighting all the woes on premiere.
Any thoughts or am I out of luck to sit with my fingers crossed for a fix in the next round of updates?
    Nathan.

  • Connecting my MacBook Pro to the Internet via Cingular

I am, at this moment, using my MacBook Pro to access the internet, and play World of Warcraft tethered via bluetooth to my Razr using my data plan from Cingular.
This has been such a battle. I had tried before and couldn't get it to connect. I had searched and searched for a solution because I need to be able to play World of Warcraft where ever I go. In the past I had used my Sony Ericcson T616 and my data plan from AT&T with no problems. But I was forced to upgrade to Cingular and since then, the only way to get online while travelling with the Razr was to boot into Windows XP. Cingular provides a program that connects fairly simply to both any wireless device and wifi. This was a hardship for the obvious reasons, plus I haven't figured out how to get the sound to turn off the speakers, even when using the headphone jack, so I had to mute the sound and you really can't play World of Warcraft with the sound muted.
So how did I do it? I decided to dedicate a couple of hours to tech support prior to taking my next train trip. After spending half an hour with Cingular's tech support and going over my settings, some of which are mentioned in the discussions here, I was transferred to a 3rd party vendor, WDS and they took me all the way back to the beginning and here are the changes they had me do that worked.
First I unpaired the phone and started the pairing process and instead of picking the second option, which mentions GPRS in the section what do you want to do with the cellphone (this is listed under the option that you can check for syncing with isync. Instead of selecting the 2nd choice, choose the one that says connecting with number provided by internet service provider.
The second change was the the phone number. Instead of *99# or anything like that, I was told to put ISP.CINGULAR.
The only other thing was selecting error compression or something like that in the bluetooth modem section above the one that says wait for dial tone (which is unchecked).
    I'm connected and very happy.

  • HP Officejet 8500A Pro Plus changes internet layout when printing

My new 8500A Pro Plus changes the layout when I print from the internet.  My option is set to "preserve the layout".  For example, when there are three items in a row, it will print two on one row and push the third to another row by itself, even when there should be plenty of room for it to print as laid out, and even if I set the print to landscape.  This shows in the print preview, and happens when I print from another computer.  How can I get this to print properly?

From the front of the printer: Setup > Network > Restore Network Defualts.
Now, from the same Network menu, run the Wireless Setup Wizard.
If that does not work, tell me about your new router.  What brand & model?  What kind of encryption (WEP, WPA, etc)?
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • ITunes 10.1.2 upgrade on  Win XP Pro SP3 Kills Internet access

The latest iTunes 10.1.2 install on my Win XP Pro SP3 system kills my Internet access. Internet status shows that I'm connected but Internet Explorer and Firefox can't connect to the server. Running Win XP Pro SP3 with all MS updates applied on a Dual-Core Intel 6600 chip, 4 gig of memory and a couple of terabytes of hard drive. When I do a restore from my backup hard drive to the prior OS and iTunes version, everything is back to normal. I didn't receive any error notifications both times from the install. I first did the install from the Apple website directly (and lost Internet access), then restored my backup system and downloaded the update separately and then installed and lost Internet access again. Am now back up using iTunes 10.1.1.4. Is this update from Egypt? (supposed to be funny).
    Thanks-
    Richard

Thanks for the link. I noticed that "Swut" from Orange County, Ca (see the post below) had a reply in the link you gave me referring to "Vipre" , which is an Anti-Virus program that I also use, like "Swut".
I will investigate this further. In defense of Apple, there is no way that they can test against every bit of software that we run on these PCs. I would hope that if we find out that there is some problem with the Vipre interface, both Apple and the Vipre people will be made aware of the problem.
Before I try the iTunes 10.2.1 upgrade again, I'll contact Sunbelt Software- the people who make Vipre and see if they have heard of this problem. I'll let all of you know what the results are.
    Thanks- Richard Van Nostrand

I didn't have to go all the way through with TRG10987s solution. When I got to step 4 I noticed that VIPRE had installed multiple virtual network adapters on to of the network adapters. I uninstalled VIPRE thereby deleting the virtual adapters ran the upgrade, and reinstalled VIPRE. Everything works fine now.

  • ArchLinux on Macbook pro mid 2012 - Internet wifi dilema

    Hello Everyone,
I've been using Arch Linux with i3wm in my machine for the past 20 days and I am really enjoying and learning a lot about everything. I have a real problem with my wifi, I can connect but after some minutes or even hours (sometimes) I need to turn it down and on again because it just stops working. I already searched a lot in the forum and I am getting stuck with this situation.
    I am using
    Wicd 1.7.3 (bzr-r933)
but already tried the networkmanager (nm-applet) and it's even worst.
I am posting some informations about my drivers.
    lspci -vnn | grep 14e4:

The ip link output is weird for me... the name is kind of messy:

I tried to use the b43-firmware and b43-legacy but that just worked for a while. I follow the Broadcom Arch wiki page and installed the broadcom-wl. Right now I have the following modules loaded relate to internet connection:
    lsmod
    Module Size Used by
bcm5974 20480 0 (not sure if related to internet)
    wl 6303744 0
    cfg80211 483328 1 wl (neither this one)
I also disabled the dhcpcd.service because I read that it may cause some issues.
I imagine that this problem is due to some interferences happening between the packages I have installed to handle the wifi connection. I really need some guidance here.
Thank you guys. This is my first post in here and any Arch community forum, so if there are some wrong formatting above, please point out.
    Thx!!

    Hello,
I'm no pro, started using Arch recently myself. Not sure about disabling dhcpcd.service. However, you might try blacklisting unneeded modules, more on that in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kernel_modules. You may need to blacklist b43 and b43-legacy.
Here's how my /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf looks like:
    blacklist bcma-pci-bridge
    blacklist ssb
    blacklist b43
    blacklist brcmsmac
    blacklist brcmfmac
    blacklist bcma
    install bcma-pci-bridge /bin/false
    install ssb /bin/false
    install b43 /bin/false
    install brcmsmac /bin/false
    install brcmfmac /bin/false
    install bcma /bin/false
