Sluggish MBP - wifi probs

Hi there.
I recently upgraded from a MB to a MBP - brought a refurbished one from the Apple store.
Anyway, since i've had it (and compared to my older MB) its performance is not up to par.
I used migration assistant to transfer everything over from the MB to teh Pro. Tht was fine, but now i'm getting problems usch as:
- random crashing, just be surfing the net and it comes up "please restart your computer"
- program crashes - firefox, parallels - this NEVER happened on my MB
- crashing when waking up from having the laptop in Sleep - have to restart (every time)
- crashing when coming out of screen saver (only occasionally)
-wifi problems - probably the biggest problem, i have the Pro in the same spot as where i had my Macbook - and it only gets like 3-4 bars, sometimes less (strength) whereas my macbook was always full
- also - sometimes it says its fully connected, and router is fine etc, but theres no connection - can't surf the net nothing, and i can turn my macbook on and use that fine at the same time the pro isn't!!
these are the biggest problems, also a heap of minor ones.
So yea, i've only had it like 5 days, and haven't had a problem free day. I'm seriously thinking i might downgrade back to the macbook.
I got it refurbished, so it has a one year warranty.
Any ideas as to whats causing this, what i could do about it?
its all updated and stuff also.

Hey, cheers for the tips.
I thought the same, and i found myself going to back to my old MB to do tasks that required better performance!
Anyway, i done the disk repair, i think its helped, but still not o good still crashes when coming out of sleep mode. And randomly crashes while on the net etc (tho not as much).
Also, i just brought Spore, and this crashes like mad - sometimes right at the menu, other times i play for an hr then randomly freezes..
wifi is better (tried some tips on tht page) but still not as consistent as my MB.
So i'm ot really happy with it, should i just take it back - will i get a refund or a exchange? is that procedure pretty straight forward (or am i in for weeks of waiting and being mucked around...)

  • Share MBP wifi with Mac Pro using Bluetooth

hey there, is it possible to share my MBP wifi with Mac Pro 2009 which doesnt have and airport extreme installed (yet) using bluetooth? I sort of paired both devices, and internet sharing is ON on MBP, my Mac Pro connects but there is no internet! Im using Time Capsule as a router. Maybe someone knows the answer? Thank you

No. You can share it to an Ethernet connection, though: run an Ethernet cable between them and share to that connection.

  • Wifi probs on Mid2009 MBP

    Hello everybody!
Ok, since i've updated to 10.5.8 yesterday night I'm having lots of problems to use my WiFi, which is causing me serious troubles at work.
I've tried almost all what I've read on the net about this, including a full reinstall of 10.5.8 combo update in safe mode. Wifi somwtimes works, and when it does it is very slow!
I have a mid 2009 MBP 13" and I'm unable to run Airport Update released by Apple last 08/12 as it is not compatible with my hardware.
Does anybody know if Apple is working on this?
Thanks for your help in advance.

I think you have the firmwares switched. The 7.2.X firmware was pretty good. As soon as the 7.4.1 came out c. 3/6/09, connectivity issues multiplied. I had dropped service all over the place. I went back to 7.2.2 which is possible to do. But then, after the 7.4.2 firmware came out c. 6/24/09, which I didn't upgrade to, I had dropped service problems as a result of NOT UPDATING to 7.4.2. All is well with 7.4.2 which fixes 5 bugs.

  • 10.7.3 MBP Wifi Problem - Endless Timeouts & Dropped connections

I've been reading around here a bit already and so I know many other people are having Wifi issues with Lion, but given that there are so many discussions and so many pages of talk, it's hard to go through it all, and using the search I haven't found anything that's quite similar to what I'm experiencing, so I'm starting a new topic...
Basically, I've got a late 2006 MacBook Pro, installed 10.7.1 (form 10.6.8) on in back in Aug 2011 and everything seemed to be fine. I updated to 10.7.2 sometime in Jan and still didn't notice any issues, but wasn't using Wifi at all at the time.
Then in Feb I moved and started using wifi (with a Cisco N router), and noticed that often, the system would not automatically reconnect to the network after waking up from sleep. Just selecting the network manually worked on the first try every time though, so it wasn't so bad.
At the end of April, I finally got around to installing the 10.7.3 update. I read it was supposed to fix wifi issues and so was looking forward to it. It installed fine and didn't seem to cause any problems...
2 days later I moved again (to India), and all **** broke loose... Now, I can rarely connect to wifi (a Beetel G router, configed with WPA). Around 25% of the time, the network won't show up in the list (despite being a clear 5ft from the base station), and when it does show up, 95% of the time I get a "connection timeout" error - often immeadiately, but sometimes it takes about 10sec to respond. On the same network, 2 Win 7 Dells and an iPad 1 all work flawlessly - it's not the router...
One the occasions that I am able to connect, it usually works fine, but if I put the computer to sleep and wake up again, there's no guarentee that the connection will work again - it's back to the lottery. And sometimes even when it's connected, the wifi stays (according to the menu indicator) but the internet connection disappears (to the point I can't even ping the router - 100% packet loss, let alone any internet server)
I've tried zapping everything I can think of (PRAM, SMC), repairing permissions, clearing the remembered networks from the System Prefs, deleting old Locations and creating new ones etc. I have a clean install of 10.7.1 that I booted off of, but it still had the same issues!

I'm pretty savy with computers and have dealt with all kinds of stuff before, but this one is beyond me, and is really annoying! I konw my machine is old, but it was totally useable up until these Wifi issues, and now wifi is basically useless.
From what I've read, it seems like its a driver issue with the Atheros card in my machine, but most people seem to be complaining about dropped connections (mine rarely drops) rather than timeout connection issues. I've also never had the "hardware not found" issue that many people have, so I think this is something different.
Anyone out there have any advice? I'm getting close to losing it with wifi since the update!

    Sorry - to add:
I don't think it's a question of WPA vs. WPA2, or even channel number - I have 2 identical routers here and neither work (both default to WPA Ch 11) but I changed one to WPA2, new SSID, various channels and still had the same problems.
Another thing to note that should be irrelevant, but who knows: the Firewire controller on my machine died back in Fall 2010 - to the point where the system won't start-up unless I remove the IOFirewire***.kext from /System/Library/Extensions , and as soon as I do that, it works flawlessly (minus Firewire). It meant I had a **** of a time installing Lion becuase I can't boot off the Recovery Partition (which has the drivers baked into it), but by cloneing my HD, installing Lion onto the clone via a borrowed machine, removing the .kext's and cloning back, I got it on and everything seems to be fine otherwise... I posted about that problem before, but never got any answers. And it wasn't just me, my father has a late 2007 MBP and the same firewire issue happened to his within 5 days of mine (not a power spike - I think it was shortly after some system update if I remember correctly).

  • New MBP wifi connectivity issues

Recently bought a new MBP about 2-3 months ago and I've noticed almost the entire time I've had it I have always had issues with the wifi constantly timing itself out. I know for a fact that this is not related to my router or ISP as I have other computers on the same network that don't run into these issues. This computer has also been tested with the same results on other wifi connections. I am currently using OS X 10.8.2 on a 15in, mid 2012 model. This issue is very frustrating. I notice this issue during everything I do from Online computer games (WoW) where the connection will just drop to basic web page browsing such as navagating to this page which was a task in itself. I constantly have to turn the wifi off and back on again to refresh the connection and to load web pages.

    Same problem, no solution yet!

  • Sluggish MBP - Should I buy new?

My MBP is now 4 years old. It's been showing sluggish performance for at least 18 months now.  I've had independent people look at it, and I've brought it to the Store and had a Genius take a look.  I get a lot of pinwheels, applications can take up to a full minute or even more to load, and I'm running out of HDD space.  My independent guy thought the HDD was failing, but the Genius did analysis and said no.  He said all was running fine, but I know it's not like it used to be.
I have a 2.66 i7 chip and today's MBP's have a standard 2.5 i7 chip.  Is it really a step down? I'm not super techy, so I need help on that.  I'd like more RAM, as I'm maxed out at 8GB. I have just 75GB of HDD space left on my 500GB drive.  I also see the advantage of solid state drive.
Before I spend $3000 on a new MBP, I just want to do my homework.
I use my system for relatively minor stuff.  I'll have most things open all at once, but nothing that I see is particularly intense on the processor or the memory.  I'll typically have the following apps open:
    AppleMail
    Contacts
    Notes
    Messages
    Safari with 4-8 windows open
    iPhoto
    a bunch of pdf's
    iTunes
When I open Activity Monitor, it generally is not showing that my system is tapped.  A fairly typical load profile is like I have right now this morning as I write this:
    Physical Memory: 8GB
    Mem Used: 7.95 GB
    Virtual Mem: 12.06 GB
    Memory pressure is green
    CPU has 90%+ idle
I do have a program on my system that is a bit of a hog.  I sell digital x-ray machines, including 3D imaging systems and I generally need to shut most other things down to open that program.  Even when I open that imaging program, the memory and CPU specs don't get maxed out.  I just don't get it.
    Any thoughts/ideas are appreciated.
    Here's my Etrecheck report:
    Problem description:
General sluggishness. Pinwheel, slow to open apps, overall deterioration of performance.

    Lex & Esquared
    Thanks for your thoughtful responses.
I've done many of the things that Lex suggested with the following failures(operator error I'm sure):
CrashPlan is my off-site backup.  I'd rather not delete that.  Is there a specific reason to get rid of that?
Could not find the TimeMachineScheduler in my application folder.  How else do I uninstall it?
    Same on PathFinder
    Same on Paragon
Not sure how to uninstall Seagate software on the external drive.  Other reformatting, and that will kill all backups.  Any other way?
After the things I did do...not a lot of change.

    ======================================
Based on your responses, I've decided on the following course of action:
    Keep my existing MBP
    Replace existing HDD with SSD
Fresh install of everything...most of what I use is inherent with OSx.  I don't want to bring "bad stuff" from existing setup to a new setup, so I'm thinking NOT to do a TimeMachine Restore
    New battery
Do you know of a step-by-step for this process?  Starting with your recommendation of a 1TB (750GB min) SSD?  I need this to be as plug & play simple as possible.  I'm a fairly average user, and the physical install is no problem.  I just want to make sure on the configuration settings etc.
    Thank You

  • Help...Can't set up my new MBP wifi...

    Good Day All,
Need some help, today I received my new Mac Book Pro...Mac OS X 10.6.7, 2ghz Intel Core i7 and memory 8GB...I turned it on, did my configurations and stuff but now I can't seem to get an internet connection, I have registered my laptop my Home wifi, but till now nothing...It's saying it has a self assigned IP address and unable to connect to the internet.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks in advance!

Poer down your modem, router and MBP. Then power up in 1 minute sequence first the modem, then the router, then the MBP. Then form the MBP's Airport icon in the menu select your network.

  • C2D MBP WiFi Error

I have a C2D MBP and the wifi simply does not work at home. I am typing this on an iBook with the exact same settings, connected to my Actiontec router, but my MBP will not connect to the network. I get the following error message in the console log:
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Resources/airport: Error: WirelessAssociate2() = 88001006 for network NETWORK
It is not a password issue, and I've tried changing the network settings from Automatic to Home without any change.
The MBP connects fine to my network at work, wirelessly, so I don't think this is a hardware issue -- I'm installing XP on bootcamp to double check this.
Does this error message mean anything to anyone?

I have had very similar problems with my new MBP. I have read that others are having the same problems as well.
Thankfully I am able to connect (most of the time) to my home network (Airport Express, WPA). I have been unable to connect to a D-link router running WEP 128, and 2 different Linksys routers, both completely open.
My connection drops occasionally when using my home network, and with other networks the card appears to login to the network but isn't getting an IP address from the router.
I would assume this is a driver problem associated with the new wireless cards in the C2D MacBook Pros. Hopefully we'll get an update soon.

  • So what about now ? C2D mbp wifi problems

So now a lot of people had posted their wifi connection problem with the brand new C2D mbp, and many of you had called apple support and still have not solved the problem.
Now C2D MB is out, what should we do ? is there any official reply from Apple regarding this issue ? or should us just go out to buy a brand new wifi router just for this laptop ?
Interestingly, there are 5 unprotected wifi router in my neighborhood, I tried them one by one, the only one that I could successfully connect was made by D-Link, and the pre-N card in C2D MBP was made by the same company too, does this imply something ?
Truely, I just wanna know Apple is working on this and there will be a solution/update/fix/patch in the not-so-far future.

There is lots of speculation to the reason for the poor wifi signals and connectivity and no true answers.
Many attribute it to routers, hardware, software, or encryption.
Regardless, for CD or C2D it has become a nuisance and I trust that apple is/has been working on it.
You need to take your problem on an individual basis though. I would suggest calling applecare or bringing your computer to an apple store. If calling applecare try to confess that you tried all the "stupid" things that solve wireless problems... like turning on your wireless!

  • New Core2Duo MBP Wifi in WinXp Problems

I have a new MBP C2D with the N-like wifi card in it. The wireless in OSX is flawless as it was with my MBP CD. Once I switch over to XP however, it is non-functional. The new card is not supported by the Boot Camp drivers and I was hoping to find an early adopter who has gotten the wifi working in XP. I tried a D-Link driver that was reported to work on MacRumors forum, but to no avail. This could be due to ineptness in Windows, I have been Mac only for this century and so I am entirely unfamiliar with XP. With the older MBP the Boot Camp drivers took care of everything for me so I could use some help.
    Thank you in advance.

I don't think the card's drivers are out there as of yet for boot camp. The post date for the current boot camp is Sept 16, 2006. The MBP with the C2D came out on 10/24/06. They need to make a revision to it, in order for it to support the current Atheros AR5008 802.11n chip set. Though other sites may provide so called solutions to the driver problems, they don't always hit the nail on the head. I think its best to wait a little bit so that Apple can catch up with their updates and provide the right drivers for the 802.11n card in boot camp, as well as for the other things that they might have changed as well. I hope they also add support for WinXP 64bit edition.

  • MBP WiFi Problem?

Hi everyone I recently bought a used MBP 2011.
Recently when I turn on the mac, the wifi will connect though it will have an explanation mark and will say: No Internet Connection. I then have to fiddle around, log off, restart my computer etc until it finally works properly. The problem isn't from the router, other laptops/PC's in the house work fine. Ethernet works fine so I know the problem is from my Mac. My OS X is up to date with everything. I'm running 10.9.4. Works fine at cousins house, work, school.

    1.Power Cycle
Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly.
       It will take a while.
      Restart the computer.
      Start up in Safe Mode.

    2.  Turn off Extensions, if any.

  • New (Early 2009) 17" MBP WiFi Issues So Far?

I have owned one of these beauties for three days now. Thus far, I have had to disable and re-enable WiFi on exactly as many occasions. I have no idea why - I'm ~12 ft. away from the closet where my Cisco 877 router (dual radios/antennas) resides and signal strength absolutely is not in question.
Also, I run a WiFi monitoring app on my Vista box and after approx five minutes I've typically picked up snippets from at least a dozen networks (apparently even the old fogies in my neighborhood are online!). I've tried a couple of different WiFi monitoring apps on OS X and the only networks detected are my own and the immediately adjacent neighbor's network. So I infer that reception is nowhere near as good in this aluminum case as compared to a typical plastic case. This bums me out for several reasons, one of them being that I have one neighbor in particular whose AP constantly jumps around and so I constantly have to manually move my own AP to a new channel to get away from them. It ***** but it works. But with the MBP, I can't seem to pick up their signal so I can't tell what freq their on (without kicking of the Vista box, which is not something I want to have to do every time I suspect interference).
So I'm just opening up this thread for discussion. Hopefully some others with the new 17" will share their experiences in the coming days or even weeks...
    Thanks all,
    Scott

My only issue at this point seems to be that following a reboot, I have to manually disable and re-enable the WiFi NIC to get joined into my home network (about 80% of the time, anyway). It frustrates me to no end when I have to do things manually to get a machine up and running - it's one of the reasons I finally left Microsoft in the dust. But I have not experienced some of the other early flakiness that was the catalyst for this thread.
Incidentally, the reception as compared to a non-aluminum case is perfectly obvious. Too bad they didn't find a way to address this in the design. Hopefully in future revisions they will...

  • Extremely sluggish MBP (mid 2010) on Mountain Lion

    Hello All,
I have a mid-2010 13" MBP (2.4 GHz C2D, 4GB RAM) which runs extremely sluggish on the Mountain Lion. I do not have Windows installed on my Mac. Most of the usage is for browsing, videos and MS-Office. Booting up from sleep takes much longer than earlier; restarting the mac takes even longer The Mac was much faster with the last OSX version: Snow Leopard. I am not even considering to OSX Mavericks for the fear of slowing down the system further.
Should I downgrade to Snow Leopard? I do not see too many features that I will be missing out on.
Or should I upgrade the RAM to 8GB? This is less preferable cos I'm unlikely to sell my existing 4GB RAM and will have to spend ~$100 on additional RAM.
Or is there any other option?
Any help in this regard is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Back up all data in target disk mode. The internal drive has malfunctioned, or you have some other hardware fault. I suggest you have the machine tested by a service provider, but if you want to continue trusting it, you can reinstall OS X by booting the working Mac into Recovery and installing onto the non-working Mac, which is still in target mode. The results will depend on what caused the failure.

  • MBP wifi "connection timeout" issue

My 2010 macbook pro has trouble connecting to many wifi networks.  It works fine connecting to my network at home, but any sort of public wifi or hotel or friend's network is likely to give it trouble.
I get the "connection timeout" issue, and I know that I'm not the only one, but I didn't manage to find anything that worked from scouring this forum.  Just to delinate the issue: all my other devices (iPad, iPhone, other laptops) connect fine to wifi networks in exactly the same places.  I managed to find a workaround by getting a cheap wifi dongle that connects fine in precisely the same places that the MBP's built-in antenna does not.  Is there any way to fix this, or am I just stuck dongling it up?

Try going into Network Preferences > Wi-Fi > Advanced. Click the network you're trying to join and click the minus button. This forces your mac to forget any saved credentials associated with that network and it will try to make a fresh connection. You can also try Network Preferences > Assist me... > Diagnostics to give you some more troubleshooting suggestions. It will probably tell you to restart your router/modem which sometimes works but you're usually not allowed to do to this to a public wifi hotspot.
It's also possible that your AirPort Extreme card, which is the part your mac uses to connect to wifi, is failing. Since 2010's are no longer under warranty, you can look up the iFixit guides to see if you're feeling adventurous enough to replace it yourself (if it is replaceable).

  • MBP wifi not working

I have a 2009 17" MBP (10.6.8) and a time capsule (w/wifi). Last wk wifi stopped. I have Comcast internet. Help. Not too tech savvy.

Shut down everything and restart in correct order if you have not done so.. Modem.. TC.. MBP.
Still have issues, then reset the TC and start over.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    Factory reset Gen 5
Hold in reset for about 5sec until the status light flashes quickly.
If your AirPort Time Capsule still doesn’t respond, do a similar reset to the Gen1-4.
Unplug your AirPort Time Capsule .. hold in reset and power the TC back on.. without releasing the reset.. wait until status led flashes rapidly.
