Sluggish online performance

Hello all you mac folk,
I am experiencing a problem and I had this same problem earlier this year. The symptoms are as follows; everything is running nice and quick and all is normal moving throught the internet. One day I add some extra photos and video clips to my I photo library. The total space taken on the hard drive was 25 gig out of 60. Well, now when my browser is loading up a page it takes forever and the images on the pages are really taking long. They appear as small boxes w/ ? marks inside as they are very slowly loading.
OK, I figure I've probably caused this by the additional photos, but I can't be sure.
So... first I delete all the cookies, ( which was a mistake / I should have kept the ones I frequent ) and my history. Then I transfer any photos to cd and erase all the photo files out of the library, desktop etc. Then I run disc utilities first aid. I don't notice an appreciable difference in speed. I do a speed test on verizon to check connection speed. I am running the fastest DSL will go. So, I reboot and use "discwarrior" to rebuild the disc.
At this point I am not really going my normal speed, even though I've done all these steps.
The last time this happened I called "Apple Care" and the tech tried a lot of things and finally had me do an archive and reinstall. Which, let me tell you was a royal pain in the butt. I had to dig out everything on disc and online to reinstall, update etc. You know the routine! This is really a last resort even though it did solve the problem and there was some sort of corruption but I don't think he ever said what it was.
So, do any of you mac geniuses know what's going on? I would like to see about solving this asap.

From your description I'm not clear what problem you are describing: Is your issue with your web browser or with the iPhoto program? Are your photos posted on a website? Do you have a dot-Mac account?

  • Continued SLOW online performance after two Archive & Installs

    Hi.
I have been living with slow online performance – pages slow to load, movies very slow to load, movies don't play back smoothly, constant buffering – for some 3-4 months before trying to do something about it... (this timeline coincides with a potential Security Update 2008-006 issue discussed here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1730909&tstart=0 , but I don't have enough savvy to know if that's the problem.)
Equivalent slow performance in both Safari and Firefox... I've compared the same sites I visit on other peoples workstations, PC and Mac, various ISPs – all of their pages and movies light up and play instantly.
Tried to research and do as much as I could before coming here, but I don't have great diagnostic skills... here's what I've got so far:
By late November, I managed to eliminate the ISP (Earthlink) as a cause of the problem... however, due to their direction to change DNS numbers, I can no longer automatically connect online upon booting, but must repeatedly connect via Internet Connect (separate issue?)... via these forums, I've reset the DNS to 208.67.220.220, 208.67.222.222.
Neither hard drive is even half full.
I did an initial Disk and Permissions Repair prior to first A&I... they needed repair then, but subsequent verifications check out clean.
After the first A&I (using the original OS X 10.4 install disk), I downloaded a complete full 10.4.11 update, including all current Security Updates... performance wound up much the same as before.
After the second A&I, and before any updating, I tested online performance – still slow... this time I downloaded only the Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combined Update from November 07, looking to avoid the 2008-006 Security Update... general browsing speed is slightly improved, but any site with a movie or rich graphics behaves like dial-up, as before... Mail is just ok – not fast, but not problematic.
Otherwise, the Mac works well enough, but it's never been a real speed-burner, imo... mainstream graphics apps (Adobe CS2, Quark 6)... the only atypical thing I might have is a Wacom graphics tablet (Intuos 3), but it's always worked fine... no games or brand-X playtime software.
The only other thing I'd be suspicious of is Network Settings, after getting the runaround at Earthlink... but the fact that I can get online at all might rule that out.
I've been at this for days, and am out of ideas... little help?
    Thanx.

OK, network settings is the scary stuff that I DO NOT understand...

    I found the PPPoE subpane.
Made the New location, it seemed to work briefly, then didn't, then I fumbled my way back to prior settings... I'm willing to try it again, BUT...
What scared me was that after setting New Location, the browser window opened to something called *Internet Configurator*, never seen this before... it asked for my email and password... is this normal?... I've got major privacy and security concerns and DO NOT want to put that password out there if I don't have to.
Please advise before I do this... thanks.

  • Index creation online - performance impact on database

    hi,
I have oracle 11.1.0.7 database running on Linux as 3 node RAC.
I have a huge table which has more than 255 columns and is about 400GB in size which is also highly fragmented because of constant DML activities.
    Questions:
    1. For now i am trying to create an index Online while the business applications are running.
Will there be any performance impact on the database to create index Online on a single column of a table 'TBL' while applications are active against the same table? So basically my question will index creation on a object during DML operations on the same object have performance impact on the database? is there a major performance impact difference in the database in creating index online and not online?
    2. I tried to build an index on a column which has NULL value on this same table 'TBL' which has more than 255 columns and is about 400GB in size highly fragmented and has about 140 million rows.
I requested the applications to be shutdown, but the index creation with parallel of 4 a least took more than 6 hours to complete.
We have a Pre-Prod database which has the exported and imported copy of the Prod data. So the pre-Prod is a highly de-fragmented copy of the Prod.
When i created the same index on the same column with NULL, it only took 15 minutes to complete.
Not sure why on a highly fragmented copy of Prod it took more than 6 hours compared to highly defragmented copy of Pre-Prod where the index creation took only 15 minutes.
    Any thoughts would be helpful.
    Thanks.
    Phil.

How are you measuring the "fragmentation" of the table ?
Is the pre-prod database running single instance or RAC ?
Did you collect any workload stats (AWR / Statspack) on the pre-prod and production systems while creating (or failing to create) the index ?
Did you check whether the index creation ended up in-memory, single pass or multi pass in in the two environments ?
The commonest explanation for this type of difference is two-fold:
    a) the older data needs a lot of delayed block cleanout, which results in a lot of random I/O to the undo tablespace - slowing down I/O generally
    b) the newer end of the table is subject to lots of change, so needs a lot of work relating to read-consistency - which also means I/O on the undo system
--  UPDATED:  but you did say that you had stopped the application so this bit wouldn't have been relevant.
On top of this, an online (re)build has to lock the table briefly at the start and end of the build, and in a busy system you can wait a long time for the locks to be acquired - and if the system has been busy while the build has been going on it can take quite a long time to apply the journal file to finish the index build.

  • Sluggish iMac performance; maintenance help needed

I have a 21.5 inch, mid-2011 iMac with 12 GB memory and a 1 Tb drive (660 GB free). Have upgraded to Mavericks, and the iMac is running slow (although it was sluggish prior to the upgrade).

I don't see anything obvious that would be causing your Mac slowdowns.
You need to update all of your third party software if there are OS X Mavericks updates that can be applied. You may need to go the third party developers' websites if there are no updates through the Mac App Store.
Update all of your Web browser Internet plugins, also.
Also, if you have any third party devices, like keyboards, mice, drawing tablets, hubs, card  readers, etc, you need to update the drivers for these devices to OS X Mavericks compatible versions.
    Good Luck!

  • Clicking/switching tabs and menus has sluggish/slow performance.

Clicking or switching through tabs has sluggish performance. Going through Menus and Options is sluggish too even with one blank tab opened. I doubt that it is my laptop because browsing through files and folders is fast and immediate. Google Chrome has a huge difference in performance.

Having the same problem. After LOTS of clicking and experimenting, here's what I think I've found:
    # The tab performance when not maximized was much better.
    # Outside of safe mode, the Add-ons tab appears to be FAR more sluggish than any other tab. No specific extension or plugin is slowing it down. It simply lags.
    # Switching between Mozilla sites seems to be slightly sluggish compared to switching between tabs for other sites
    # Disabling the "Tab Utilities" extension (ithinc) made the performance when maximized equivalent to the non-maximized performance. This leads me to believe that the difference between the two is caused by this plugin. The Add-ons Manager tab, and Mozilla sites were still relatively slower.
    # Disabling all other extensions offered no additional improvement, but, strangely, starting in safe mode did. While inside safe mode everything is super snappy.
    # I have a sizable list of extensions, including a large number of disabled extensions (most of which I can't "remove" because they are from 3.6)
The time periods on #5 are very small, on the order of perhaps 80-100 milliseconds. Just long enough that you do a double take and wonder if it was really slower, or just your imagination, but then when you compare against changing tabs in chrome, it's clear that you aren't crazy. There is no noticable difference between safe mode and Chrome, but there IS between non-safe-with-everything-disabled and Chrome.
Is it possible that this is caused by some sort of broadcast to all plugins about the tab change? If so, could this broadcast be completed asynchronously, or else AFTER the tab switch? This is really a perception issue. To feel "fast" to the user, the click should result in instant visual feedback. If my plugins want to know something about the change, I'm satisfied with letting them wait until after '''I''' find out about it.

  • IPad 2 sluggish online videos?

My 2 Mac minis, PBG4 and iPhone 3GS, seem to perform much better
than my new IPad 2 with online streaming videos.
On the iPad they do not play as flawlessly as on my other devices.
This makes little sense also because the iPad does show excellent
wifi signal strength and I have fiberoptic DSL with a consistent speed of 6Mb per sec.
    Is this a bug?

  • Sluggish button performance

Simple nav in any of my folios seem to take forever and it's starting to get me down ;-) I must be doing something wrong. Go to destination or Go to URL buttons take a considerable amount of time - around 2 seconds to do its thing. I can't imagine it's my file sizes, and I've been building portfolios to standard iPad res and retina with no difference. It's just slow...
Any ideas on how I can make things more snappy? Thanks very much.

I am still having problems with scrollable frames with the article uploaded in PDF format. I've read that Viewer v22 has solved this but not for me me. I have the latest Folio Builder as well as the latest version of Content Viewer on my iPad. I have saved my Folio as v22 in PDF format and imported my multi-orientation articles as per normal. However, there is STILL a problem when trying to swipe across as vertical scrollable frame - it simply doesn't work. When I add articles individually, and as PNG, the swipe across the scrollable frame then works, but then the ipad is extremely sluggish when changing orientation ie. it takes 4 to 5 seconds to change from one orientation to the other, which obviously won't be acceptable. I've read on some forums here that although the PDF option won't work in the Content Viewer, it will work on published Folios, but this is no help if I'm using the Content Viewer to try to sell an app idea to a prospective client. Does anyone else still have this problem?

  • CS6- Sluggish Graphics performance

    Hi;
I just installed Photoshop CS6 on a Windows 7 64-Bit system with an ATI 5870 Graphics card and the latest ATI 12.4 drivers. Graphics performance seems to be noticeably worse than CS4 that I upgraded from.
The very first thing I tried was pasting a copy of an open Desktop Window (Alt-Printscreen) into Photoshop (File/New then paste). Then I simply alternated between 'Fit on screen' and 'Actual Pixels' to watch the magnification change.
'Zooming' performance seems noticeably slower/jerkier than with CS4.
I played around with the 'performance' options and I discovered that the fastest setup seems to be when I go to Graphics Processor Setting and uncheck the 'Use Graphics processor' box (It was checked by default) . Then, things seem pretty snappy. The zoom doesn't seem to have much of any 'animation' as it changes level.
The next quickest seems to be when I leave the 'Use Graphics processor' box checked, but change the 'Advanced settings'/Drawing Mode to 'Basic' (down from the default 'Advanced').
Here, the zoom seems to be smooth, but seems to have a little bit of an 'animated' appearance as it is growing or shrinking (as it changes the zoom level). The worst performance is the default drawing mode of 'Advanced'.
Does anyone else see this issue with CS6 and ATI graphics? Is it expected to have to turn down the graphics setting to get improved performance?
The ATI 5870 isn't too shabby of a video card, and I expected better with CS6.
The 64-Bit version speed doesn't seem any different, although the Graphics setting for 'Use OpenCL' is checked in 64-bit version of CS6
My CPU is an Intel I980X (3.33 GHz) 6-Core system, in case that helps.
       Thanks;
         -Greg

I rolled back the drivers to the AMD 12.2 Catalyst video driver version and things do seem much improved.
With only limited testing so far, things now appear to be (mostly) at least as fast as without the 'Use graphics card' option checked.
I say mostly because with the graphics card being used, I now see some short 'delays' in some actions that aren't there without it. For example, starting CS6 and then doing a 'new' followed by 'paste' seems to have a little delay in there that's not present without the use  graphics card option. (Maybe it's initializing the card, I don't know).
It seems like the graphical effects for things like 'Iris Blur' look  fancier with the graphics card being used, but so far it's not clear if they are actually any faster/more responsive. 'liquefy' looks very smooth with or without the 'use graphics card' option.
At least performance is no longer absolutely horrible (using the 'Graphics acceleration')... . I'll have to try it out some more.
      Thanks!
         -Greg

  • Sluggish OD Performance

    Ok, this has me puzzled:
We had a Dual-G5 with 10.5 Server on it managing a small workgroup of 3 people having their home directories on it (in Addition to AFP-Shares, iCal and Webserver). It was working just fine for round about 9 months now, but I did have the feeling it was getting slower and slower (which we blamed on the perfomance of the almost 6 year old server hardware, which was running at 90%)
Since we are about to hire 4 more people that all have to switch workstations from time to time we decided to keep the current setup, but invest in a new server.
My 8 Core Intel Xserve arrived 2 days ago, I spend the last days cloning our old server to the new one, but now performance is even worse.
As soon as I turn on the Open Directory Service on any Workstation the machines grind to a halt. Before I can even log on I have to wait about 20 seconds to enter a Username and Password, same happens anytime an authentication is required. Opening System Preferences takes 30 seconds, starting Final Cut takes 10 Minutes (even when logged in with a local account on the workstation)
Some accounts are mobile, just starting the sync, connecting to the network folder takes 30 seconds... etc
DNS is working just fine, as is the rest, file transfers over AFP are as quick as they get, and the OD Logs show nothing relevant exept from some GSSAPI Errors getting logged in unregular patterns.
    So? Any idea whats wrong?
I already reset the OD Master and restored the users from an archive file...

Ok - seems solved, here's what I did:
I changed the home-folder automount from AFP to NFS, that helped a bit.
Then I disabled Contacts from LDAP in the Directory Services on the bound machines, that made the problem disappears completely. So I went back to the server and changed the LDAP search timeout from the preset 1 minute to 1 second and reenabled LDAP Contact-Search on the bound machines.
Everything seems to be working just fine.

  • Sluggish Wireless Performance...

I purchased my Macbook Pro Saturday, being a Window's convert; I am now a diehard fan of the Mac operating system. However...I do not understand how a manufacturer (Apple) can release a product with as many native-based flaws...
    A) I had to deal with manually re-entering my network information after each reboot- Yay, I sucessfully figured out that problem- (thank you for all the enlightenment/information gained from reading these forums...)
    B) Heat...Oh well, It's under warranty, right?
Enough with the complaining...onto the point.
    C) I do not understand how/why my internet performance could be so muzzled... I get the downward end of 20 Kbps when downloading updates, or files, and the building of webpages equate to equally slow performance.
I've noticed that many other users are plagued by the same issues, and thus many have contacted technical support for help...with no results I'm gathering? Questions are:
    A) Has anybody found a solution to this problem? Or is it only something that an update will remedy?
    B) If the answer to "a" is no, is there any point in contacting technical support, or would it be a waste of precious calories? Efforts seem pretty much futile so far...
Thank you for any assistance! Hope you're having a wonderful night...

I access the internet via cable. Yes, I am using airport, as for access points I'm connected through a Linksys WRT54GS router....Yes I was refering to 20 Kilabytes/second...Sorry for the lack of clarity, it was late. On my windows laptop I always was connected at 54 mbps wirelessly, and never experienced any speed issues. From reading...I've executed numerous theories that others have shared on the forum, no improvement however...

  • Sluggish Safari Performance, especially RSS Feeds

Hi all. Running a 1st gen 17" MacBook Pro (2.16Ghz Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 7200RPM 100GB hard drive) with all the latest software updates (10.5.3, Safari 3.1.1).
Over the past couple of months, Safari has become increasingly sluggish for me. From launching the app to completion of loading my home page (macnn.com) takes 18 seconds or more. The computer seems to hit the hard drive an awful lot while surfing, which results in a lot of beachballing and delays. What's especially bad is RSS feeds, which have become nearly useless. For example, loading engadget's RSS feed takes my computer upwards of 45 seconds, complete with a good portion of beachballing. Pretty worthless considering just loading their whole website takes seven seconds.
I've tried reinstalling Safari, which didn't help. I'd really hate to have to wipe my system entirely, but it looks like that might be what it takes.

That won't fix your problem. You'd be far better off turning off RSS in Safari and deleting any feeds you have there, and using a dedicated RSS reader such as the open source Vienna or NetNewsWire.
Try that first and see if things don't improve.

  • Sluggish iPhone performance after iTunes Match

My iPhone is sluggish and I think it happened after enabling iTunes Match.  I notice the sluggishness mainly in the Music app.  If I'm playing something and the iPhone goes to sleep, when I wake it takes maybe 10 seconds before it will let me unlock the slider.  The Music app takes awhile to load, and it always goes out to the Internet on launch.  If I play a tune then turn the phone sideways to view coverflow it takes at least several seconds.  I don't remember the phone behaving this way before iTunes Match.  It's an iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1.1.  Any ideas?

My Camaro will recognize the iPhone still, but sits indexing for well over 45 minutes. I have yet to be able to play anything attached via the iPhone to USB connector. Bluetooth streaming does work, however the bluetooth on my 4s keeps cutting out (always has). So bluetooth really isn't an option.
My work around for the indexing issue was to create a playlist on my computer that was a reasonable size (500 songs for me), then download everything on my iPhone, then turn iMatch off. That keeps the files local to the iPhone, and indexing is only around 5 minutes. Otherwise the Camaro's computer needs to index the 8000+ songs I have on the cloud, even if they're not physically on the iPhone.
It would be nice if Apple would have an xml index already built that the GM computer systems could access, since they are supposed to be native to each other.

  • Extremely sluggish / dissatisfying performance

Having read some more posts on this slowdaon issue I have download Eltrecheck and enclosed results.
The test so far on my comupter for 1/2 day having  reinstalled Yosemite is that :
1 If you dont have Mac mail running on boot then it has spakling performance but this degraded over about 1 hour to the same old spinning ball etc.
2 The instant you open Mac Mail then it all starts from there.
I am using the i Mac to post this having had to reboot re speed issues and it is currently fine ...for the moment.
I would appreciate Kappy or a senior looking over the results if possible
I note there are errors on the HD . I have repaired permissions 3 times prior to OS reinstall.
    Thank you for your help
    David

  • Sluggish WDC800JB performance on k7n2-L

    Hello all,
Recently, I decided to run sandra 2002 on my Hard Drive.  I dispised the results.  32MB bandwidth.  "Crap, that sucks", I said.  I tried 2004, maybe my system was too "advanced" for their eye.  I wish, same score... well, maybe Sandra was out to get me.  So I tried PC Mark and HD Tach, same results...  Whats going on here?  My hard drive properties says its in "Ultra DMA 5" mode, I get worse results with S.M.A.R.T turned on, I've tried two different IDE Cables (yes, both have blue ends fastened to the motherboard... means they're 80 wires, right?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    edit:

    radeon 9500 unlocked @ 9700 plus
    win xp pro

I'm sorry I wasn't clear enough.  The hard drive is the master, on the end of the IDE cable (black), there are no other drives, I have removed all of the jumpers, it's the only drive I have other than my CD Burner, which is on IDE 2, my PSU (if that is helpful) is an Enermax Whisper 350 W.  I previously followed the instructions on the NOOB thread, but it's mostly what I had already done.  Do you need any more information?  Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.
