Sluggish operation
I've noticed the iPhone operation gets sluggish and the animations (sliding lock, zoom, etc) get slowed down over time.
A reboot by menu + lock button will solve this, but rebooting a phone everyday not practical and normal thing to do.
I believe it's most likely because of RAM space eaten up by running multiple applications. Blackberry has similar problem, but you can select background applications and quite them to release RAM space.
Are there any tips to prevent / release sluggishness without rebooting??

This was one of the reasons why I decided to give the iphone a serious look becuase I was tired of rebooting my windows treo 2 or 3 times a day... sometimes because it would just hang, or other times becuas it was becoming sluggish and a reboot was the best route to snapping it back to life.
I know these "smart" phones are closer to small computers, but if they are competing in the phone market they need to demonstrate competitive reliability.
Well, I guess thats not a given, otherwise Windows wouldnt have contributed to the collapse of reliable mainframes with the same thought that a reboot here and there was no biggie.
Oh well...

  • Available disk space keeps changing, sluggish operation

    This is a continuation of my previous post. Upon restarting the computer and navigating in the finder, I noticed that the available disk space on my machine changes every few seconds, it seems to go up and down a range of about 500 mb every few seconds or so. Any idea at all what could be causing this and/or a potential solution?

    These discrepancies in disk space may be due to Mac OS X using your hard drive as virtual memory. Sluggish operation is generally due to paging in and out of virtual memory. The solution to both problems would be to install more RAM.

  • Jerky playback, sluggish operations while editing

    I've never had any troubles with video until now. I'm getting jerky playback on my machine, where under the previous iMovie I didn't. The playback display will freeze and skip, while the vertical red place marker pauses and jumps forward. The video doesn't have sound at this point, so I don't know if sound is skipping. I'm running on a 30" Cinema display with iMovie filling the screen.
    When I take actions, such as clicking on a clip, there's a slight pause before the action happens. Scrolling through video to find the right frame to split on is very sluggish.
    The type of video that I'm editing are screen movies created using Snapz Pro X (http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox/) at 30fps, saved as MP4's highest quality. Yes, it's a lot more space, but I like to preserve as much quality as possible through the editing process.
    Activity Monitor shows that I have 266MB of RAM free, so I don't believe I'm running into swapping problems. At the suggestion of an Apple Store employee, I had an authorized Apple repair place upgrade the hard drive (to 7200RPM; weeee!) a year ago since they don't do after-market upgrades.
    I've used iDefrag to defrag the filesystem. I'm maxed out on RAM (2GB; first generation MBP).
    What types of things should I be looking for to get smooth playback while editing?

    I doubt if any card works well with CS5.
    It's best to have an Adobe PC without any video signal card.
    1. Use a capture/playout PC to capture and view the images, preferably also without using any Adobe software.
    2. Then do your stuff on the Adobe PC.
    3. Transfer the mixdown of the video to your capture/playout PC, check the field order and print to tape (without Adobe) or deliver the file.
    For now, Matrox MXO2 is also unusable with CS5. Boris FX makes things even worse.
    My PC is extremely powerfull, so that can't be it, but it's very unstable.
    Manufacturers of cards and Adobe don't work hard enough to combine their products and they just blame eachother.
    It used to be quite nice semi-pro stuff for editing but forget that with any video hardware for the time being; it dropped to amateur level.
    I'm done trying to fix it or waiting for solutions; I just issue warnings for other users and buyers now.

  • Sluggish operation of LABVIEW 7.1

    I am using LABVIEW 7.1 on Windows XP with IBM machine having 512 MB memory. My application is based on IOTech's DAQ1000 board with analog I/O, digital I/O, serial data transfer using RS232 port and USB based label printer. The application is developed and used for automatic product programming and testing.
    The problem is, when we reboot the machine and start doing our work, we pass/fail one board in around 10 seconds. Then the time continue to increase. After 3-4 hours, If I program and test even the same board (the first one), it takes around 18 second to pass/fail. And if we try to continue over night, machine just like hangs and I can not quit out of Labview, even forcefully using the task manager.
    What could be the cause? If any one had such problem and solved it, let me know. Some time I am getting virtual memory low message even though I allocated remaining harddisk for virtual memory (around 10 GB).

    I'm wondering if one of two things happened:
    1. Someone who previously used your computer had NI software installed, but then improperly uninstalled it. For instance, they may have thought that deleting the National Instruments folder and some registry keys would uninstall the applications.
    2. Another product is installed with the same GUID. This would be pretty random, but as far as I know it's not impossible. The GUID is how an installed application is uniquely identified with Windows. It's a long string of numbers. You might try searching the registry for LabVIEW's GUID code. You can find this code in the Setup.ini file on your installer CD. Look for something similar to:

    Keep in mind the GUID above is for the PDS, and it might differ for the Full or Base packages. See if a search for that GUID gives us anything.
    In terms of your overall goal, though, I'm not sure it would be too beneficial to test the app on another machine just yet. Have you checked Task Manager to see if your memory is saturating while the app runs? Are you creating and killing any DAQ tasks for your third party DAQ inside a loop? Are you building arrays inside a loop? These would be very valuable things to know for troubleshooting purposes.

  • Spotlight on my iMac running snow leopard will not stop indexing the hard drive. How can I stop this?

    Spotlight on my iMac (OSX 10.6.8) has suddenly begun indexing the hard drive non-stop, causing very sluggish operation and spinning beach balls. Reinstalling the operating system has not helped, nor has repairing permissions or the disk.

    One of the first things that happens when installing a new version of OS X is that the Spotlight search app is setup to index all available hard drives.
    The indexing makes it faster and easier for the Spotlight Search app to find things on and off your Mac.
    You can either let it take the time it needs to do this (Spotlight will only do this one time, initially) OR if you just can't or want to wait for this to complete, you need to go into OS X System Prefences panel in the OS X Dock, locate the Spotlight icon.
    Click the Spitlight icon and another set of menus appear.
    Find the menu item dealing the Spotlight indexing and uncheck its checkbox to disable Spotlight indexing.

  • Help: Slow Performance in Captivate 2

    I have a new computer running XP Pro SP3 with a fast
    processor and 4GB memory.
    I am editing a CP movie with 70 slides.
    When moving from slide to slide, it takes 3-5 seconds for the
    selected slide to appear. During this time, Task Manager says CP is
    sucking up 50-70% of CPU.
    While ediiting a slide, selecting and editing any object has
    similar results: CP goes away for several seconds during which time
    no editing is possible.
    As an experiment, I created a new movie then imported the old
    movie into it. Same result: sluggish operation.
    Any suggestions?

    Transparency like this can tax some systems. I ran into a
    similar problem
    years ago authoring in an application that has transparent
    Flash movies and
    transparent png files on the same screen. Only slowed down
    one machine.
    Updating the graphic card drivers fixed it. You can test for
    this by dialing
    down graphic hardware acceleration.

  • Canon Pixma M860 only prints partial pages

    Hi,
    Thanks in advance for your assistance. I had to take my computer in because of several stalling issues, and had to unhook my printer to do so. It was working fine then. When I plugged it back in, the printer won't work properly; it only prints partial pages. I checked the ink supplies, and they are fine. I cleaned the heads, they too are fine. I tried to open the Solution Menu, but it comes up blank. Can you help? I'd sure appreciate it!

    Okay, to answer the three replies...
    Question: after this, how will I know where to go to add my printer queue again? I'm sorry, I don't quite know where/how to do this? Do you mean I just try to print some things again?
    I need you to add the printer queue again by opening Print & Fax and clicking the + button under the now empty Printers list. If the printer is connected to the Mac via USB cable then you can select the Default icon and then select the MX860 in the list. This should automatically change the Print Using menu to 'Canon MX860 series'. You can then click Add to complete the printer queue creation.
    If the printer is wireless instead of USB then please let me know as the procedure is a bit different to the above.
    Also, you mentioned that the Solutions Menu isn't really needed. I had just hoped the troubleshooting button it is supposed to have could be of some use in repairing my printer, but it doesn't sound like it from what you say here? If not, that's okay. Just wondering.
    To be honest I've never installed the Solution Menu so I cannot comment on how well the troubleshooting information is. Since I feel I know more than these guides ever provide then I've never felt the need to use them. For you it could be handy but having read other Canon guides I feel that they can confuse the user more than help them...
    They just did the Repair Disk thing and it was better for oh, about a minute. I realize that's not the issue we are discussing; I just mentioned it to let you know I'm responding as quick as I'm able, and just in case you think Safari's weirdness might be affecting the printer somehow.
    At this stage I would say that Safari is not the problem but the sluggish operation you are noticing when using it could be an indication that something is using resources on your Mac and this could also be impacting the printing. In this situation I would suggest a Mac user to check the Activity Monitor. This will show you every little background service that is currently running on your Mac and one or more of these services could be the culprit. An example would be the previous printer software. With older drivers many vendors install services with their drivers to provide users with information, such as ink status, because the then current OS did not provide them. This is fine when you have that printer connected but when it is removed and you use a different printer, especially from a different vendor, then these services can cause performance issues for the new printer.
    Okay, I'm heading home now but I will log in again after dinner to see how you're going...

  • Photoshop Elements not working with Yosemite

    After upgrading OS to Yosemite I could not get Photoshop Elements 11 to work properly - sluggish operation and brushes not working.  I upgraded to Elements 13 but it gets sluggish as time passes and some of the filters don't work.  It is frustrating to say the least as I do lots of photo processing and it just takes too long now.  Can anybody help?

    We sincerely apologize for the problem customers are facing while using a trackpad with Photoshop Elements 11 & 12 on Mac OSX 10.10 (Yosemite).
    We have been actively working with Apple to resolve this problem as quickly as possible. We're hopeful this will get completely resolved in an upcoming update of Yosemite(MAC 10.10).
    In the meanwhile, you have two options to work around this problem:
    1. Option1: Use a mouse instead of the trackpad
    2. Option2: Install a plug-in which should workaround the problem
    Plug-in installation instructions:
    1. Close Photoshop Elements
    2. Download this zip file to a location you can easily find (e.g. your desktop)
    3. Unzip the file, WhiteWindowWorkaround.plugin, and move it to the Plug-In folder:
    • For Elements 12 – //Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 12/Support Files/Plug-Ins/
    • For Elements 11 - //Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 11/Support Files/Plug-Ins/
    You can verify the plug-in is installed by launching the Photoshop Elements Editor and choosing Help > System Info... Scroll to the bottom of the text in the dialog and look for the plug-in name "WhiteWindowWorkaround.plugin".
    Note: This plugin is a temporary workaround and should be used until this issue is addressed in Mac OSX 10.10 (Yosemite). Please remove this plugin once the issue is officially resolved by Apple.
    If you are using a stylus in conjunction with a trackpad, you might see issues with your trackpad. Workaround in this particular case is to use mouse instead of the trackpad.

  • Unresponsive home/sleep button

    Sometimes I would have to click the home or sleep button for like 10 times before it turns on, how come it does this? Its a new Iphone 5 with no damages at all.

    It could possibly be a faulty button. However, it could also be glitchy software on the device.  To rule out software glitches/sluggish operation you'll have to back the device up to save all your data, sync purchases to itunes (File, devices, sync purchases. The computer needs to be authorized first. If it is not click store, authorize this computer.) and restore the device as new.  Test the button to see if it is working properly. If the button is still not responding properly contact AppleCare at 1-800-MY-APPLE, explain what you've done, and they can issue a replacement for the device under it's fatory 1 year limited hardware warranty.

  • CFP-TC120 Conversion Time

    Probably a stupid question (at least I hope it is) but does the relatively slow conversion time of the TC120 thermocouple module affect the responsiveness of the whole network interface module?
    I plan to have up to six TC-120 modules within the same network node as other I/O and I can't afford to have any appreciable delays. The first and only time I got to try a system with an TC-120 fitted it seemed to show a sluggish response to other I/O, but it could have been something else!

    Slow update rate of cFP-TC-120 is due to the 50/60Hz filtering.  It has no effect on how fast the network interface module runs.  In my own experience, sluggish behavior happens a couple of ways.  One is during bootup.  This is when things like the Shared Variable Engine are being started.  The more variables, the longer the delay.  With a little planning, this delay can be managed.  I typically just put a delay in my startup vi to allow the SVE to be up and running before I start using the shared variables.  My units seldom get rebooted and I don't need to worry about startup delays.
    One issue that has been reported by several users including me involves sluggish operation until all the I/O have been used once by the program.  NI has never given a specific cause, but the fix is to add an empty text file named "fpremote.ini" to the "ni-rt/system/" folder on the cFP.  You can use ftp to transfer the file.  Maybe one of these days NI will start shipping new units with the file included.
    The last cause is simply how the code is structured.  I am my own worst enemy.

  • [webgl] sluggish performance ( /dev/nvidia0 Operation not permitted )

    We (folks on #archlinux already tried helping) have been at this for hours now... no solution found yet.
    summary: webgl works but performance is sluggish(20 to 30fps) which makes me assume it's falling back to software rendering for some unknown reason
    already tried many things: vmalloc kernel parameters, irq control left to bios/archlinux, being in the video group, not being in the video group, having an xorg.conf, not having an xorg.conf, different AGP aperture sizes in BIOS, regular gl performance is normal (60 fps (capped to display refresh) in glxgears), only webgl slugs, card (GT 7600 256MB VRAM) should support the required shader language version for webgl (and webgl performance is only sluggish in linux... so I think it must be a configuration issue on some driver/kernel/browser setting?)
    Different browsers show different messages when started from the console but I don't know what to make of those and googling them did not reveal any solutions so far either.
    browsers tested: firefox, google-chrome(from AUR), chromium
    window managers tested: enlightenment, fluxbox
    kernel: linux-lts
    driver: nvidia-304xx-lts (can not use Nouveau as Nouveau keeps locking up the GPU)
    It's a fresh archlinux installation (Ubuntu had the same performance problem btw in case that might be useful to know for looking for the cause).
    Everything I tried so far, did not change anything about the sluggish webgl performance problem.
    One thing I noticed is that /dev/nvidia0 and /dev/nvidiactl both do not exist until after "startx". Could that be a problem?

    This is a friends computer and I do not have access to apple codes, or how this system works.

  • Opera suddenly sluggish

    Since the last update to 9.64 (opera-static in community), opera has been very sluggish for me.  I click a link or bookmark, and opera sits there for 10 seconds to a few minutes before it does anything.  It isn't frozen, and I can simultaneously load the same sites in firefox no problem.  It even seems to load slower once it is actually loading.  Anyone else have this?  I tried running it from a terminal, but nothing popped up, didn't have any debuging enabled though.

    Have you tried backing up, and then nuking your Opera prefs folder in /home?  Opera 9.64 works fine here.

  • SystemExec.vi runs sluggish minimized. 30 sec vs 5 sec for same USB operation.

    I am programming Microchip PICs with a Promate 3, through the USB, using SystemExec.vi. When I run with the window minimized, the operation takes ~30 seconds. When the window is left maximized, the operation takes ~5 seconds. Has anyone run into this, what is going on and is there another option to leaving the SystemExec window on top of my LV front panel?

  • Sluggish performance during disk operations

    I've got a PC with a SATA hard disk and Arch is installed into a partition which uses the Ext3FS. During any longer disk operations the performance degrades near to a level of unusability. The movement of the mouse pointer is very choppy, switching between windows or desktops takes several seconds and so on... It's of course understandable that this would happen if I tried to access the disk with some program while the operation active, but this happens even if I'm trying to access something that is loaded into the RAM. And all the time most of the RAM remains free.
    This doesn't happen while doing similar things in Windows, so I guess I must have just configured my kernel badly or something. Any advice on where to start solving this?

    I've enabled the correct chipset while customizing kernel (Intel ICH6, without which Arch won't even boot, so it should be correct). I've also enabled DMA, but from certain locations I've understood that DMA is only for IDE devices and doesn't affect SATA performance.
    I did some poking on some other forums and found out that this problem has been pestering other people too, but no solution has been found (at least I don't know of any).
