Sluggish performance- hardware test?

How can I run a Hardware/performance test on my Mac pro 2008(early).
2X3 GHz Quad-Core Xeon.
I am getting very sluggish performance from Motion and Avid programs.
Honestly I saw very little performance increase compared to my old Quad PPC.
I installed 16 gigs RAM from OWC.
ATI Radeon HD 4870 and a eSATA video RAID.
By all accounts this machine should be cooking- but it doesn't.
I ran DW on the Boot drive- but I still have issues.
I have read so much praise for the 2008's as great machines- so I just don't understand why I get so many hang ups.

Clone your drive (SuperDuper) so you have an exact backup image.
Question: did you migrate your apps from G5? It sounds like you did.
The nice thing about SuperDuper is it skips all the clutter (cache, temp, logs etc) and optimizes folder and free space.
Are you using drives from G5 that have not been reformatted?
I'm sure there are other things to look for under the hood.

  • I can not perform hardware test on 2011 imac with mavericks

I unplug all devices from my iMac and held the d key and still can not get to the hardware test. The Mac store was able to perform it with a wired mouse even after I added more ram therefore I know it can be performed. Am I leaving something out?

Read the instructions in Using Apple Hardware Test.
If your iMac shipped with discs, you must run AHT while holding the d key while starting the Mac with its grey Applications Install DVD inserted in the optical drive.
To force the Internet version of AHT to load: with two fingers hold option d while starting your iMac with a third finger.

  • Can't perform Apple Hardware Test of any kind

I can't perform an Apple Hardware Test – on a late 2008 MBP – from original software disk, because my superdrive (matshita dvd-ram uj-868) has long been broke.
Whenever I insert any kind of disk, it doesn't even read neither the machine recongnizes it and it's really a **** of a bum to eject it (when lucky I manage to remove it with force-eject).
Anyway, these are the sollutions that Apple tells in order to perform the AHT
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11342
    If you have a new Mac (…) I don't
If your Mac has OS X v10.8.3 or earlier (…) I'm running OS X v10.8.4
If you updated your Mac to OS X v10.8.4 or later, use the system software disc or USB flash drive that came with your Mac. Well, obvious reasons…
    So, what can I do?!
P.S.: I would like to run the Apple Hardware Test:
To know what happened to my SuperDrive.
For a long time it keeps with high temperatures (at least 70°C 158°F), causing the loud fans to pump up. Even with low %CPU usage (already have SMC fan control)
To have an overview of how is my machine doing.
    Thank you!

I've already tried and it didn't work because my MBP can't' be upgraded to OS X internet recovery (using option+D)…

  • Need to perform a hardware test, but pressing D during startup is fruitless

I've got some sort of glitch I need to work through.  I'm assuming it's hardware related, and I directly suspect the GPU, or maybe a lose connection thereto (symptoms are coming and going).  Symptoms coincided directly with an OSX update to 10.9.4, but that might just be incidental.  Unfortunately, upon startup, I can't load into the Hardware Tester/Diagnostics tool... pressing 'D' during startup leads me to looking at a grey screen for about half a minute, then the MBP just decides to load into OSX.  I've tried to perform this test about ten times now - same result each time.
Here's a couple of pictures of my screen when the issue is playing up.  It's obviously rendering the computer unusable:
    http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh230/ravenhaller/IMG_0290_zps1166b6b2.jpg
    http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh230/ravenhaller/IMG_0293_zps67c6c3fb.jpg
I'm trying for a combo update reinstall of 10.9.4 right now.  But if you have any other advice i'm all ears.

Yes.   In one of those photos i've provided it's the OSX recovery screen that is bugging out.  I seem to have a 50/50 hit rate in getting through - like I said - the symptoms are coming and going.  Once within OSX recovery menu i've fired up disk utilities to make sure i'm not dealing with a dying HD - disk utility is suggesting my HD is in perfect health and perfect working order.
I just followed through with reinstalling the 10.9.4 combo update too - I still can't perform a hardware test.

Have the Mini's Serial# handy & call Apple Care, they usually have original replacement Discs available.

  • Apple Hardware Test (Perform Extended Testing)

Hit the 'E' key to select Perform Extended Testing if you are unable to select it with a mouse.
I've been working on my wife's new iMac (I7 27") that she purchased a few months ago. Because it is so new, I wouldn't even waste my time on it and just sent it back to Apple to have them look at it (currently suffering slow startup times), however we recently moved overseas to Kyiv, Ukraine. During the troubleshooting, I found the following site:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
which informs users how to use Apple's Hardware test. Unfortunately, the app only recognized the wireless keyboard and not the wireless mouse. I didn't know who to contact to have the webpage updated because there is a way you can enable the extended hardware test from the keyboard (by hitting the 'E' key). Unfortunately, I had to figure this out on my own after exhaustive searching on the internet and websites. Hopefully, someone can pass this information along. I wish the app was more keyboard friendly.
I see some other posts that I haven't tried yet, so hopefully they might resolve me issue.
If I can't fix the problem, I'm going to have to see if there may be a rep in this country who to replace/fix the unit.

Yesterday I ran the Apple Hardware test ( Version 3A181 - Perform Extended Testing ) from my MacBook OS Install DVD and Everything passed 100% ( entire test took 57 minutes and 15 seconds )
Forgot to mention after the Apple Hardware test was finished No Problems Were Found...
This isn't making any sense to me - Any Suggestions to what the cause of these Safe Boots may be ?

  • Will Apple Hardware Test definitely detect RAM errors?

    Hello,
Been having various problems with Leopard/MacBook. Someone suggested running Apple Hardware Test, which I did, in extended + looping mode all night (it cycled 6 times). The test turned up nothing. Can I take this to mean that whatever problems I am having are definitely software related? I am not familiar with the AHT, don't know exactly what it does, nor how I can interpret a "clean" result...
    Many thanks for any advice/tips.

No indeed (just "Colin" is fine...)
My problems have mostly been documented by other people, and I have just been monitoring the discussions on these issues.
Specifically (at the risk of getting off-topic):
    1) inconsistent shared server behaviour: I have 3 other macs at home - an iBook and a G4 MiniMac running Tiger, and a G4 tower, also running Leopard - and most of the time, the tower doesn't show up at all, but I can connect to it via CMD-K, the MiniMac shows up in the sidebar, but won't let me connect, and the iBook, when it is running, behaves normally. Oh, screen sharing doesn't work either: it tries connect but hangs (except for the iBook, which works). I could connect to all four quite normally after upgrading to 10.5.0, using the sidebar icons. Everything worked fine until sometime after the 10.5.1 update, when suddenly everything went pear-shaped. Nothing has changed in the configs of the other machines, and the iBook and the MiniMac are identical in terms of software config (but behave differently as regards this problem?!?)
Closing Airport and reopening it makes the icons reappear in the sidebar (all of them, G4 tower included), as does relaunching the Finder, but doesn't change the behaviour: I still can't connect. When I try to use the sidebar icon for the tower, it disappears (the icon...)
As far as I can tell, trying to operate shares from the G4 tower works as Apple intended (although I admit I have not exhaustively tested every option, as I don't have unlimited time...)
    2) Lost my printer connections, both at work and at home. I managed to reestablish them at work, but I tried so many things that finally I'm not sure what actually worked. No dice at home (shared printer on the MiniMac... same problem as (1) I guess.)
    3) the dreaded Keynote spontaneous reboot problem (I placed a reply about that last night here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6630702#6630702
    4) diverse weird things, like
4a)iCal which had doubled all my events the last time I opened it. I had to manually delete one copy of every event I had entered, whereas I made these entries several weeks ago, and had consulted them many times... I'm thinking this is perhaps a result of the brutal reboots caused by (3)? Having deleted all the doubles, iCal seems to be behaving normally again.
4b)screen resolutions on my slave screen suddenly failing to select properly. I move my MacBook between two different external monitors, one at work, one at home, and their resolutions are different. Initially the MacBook had no trouble detecting and correctly setting the resolutions for the two screens, then suddenly my home screen went weird on me, and required a manual reset. Again, this was a once-off, and does not seem to be repeating (yet).
4c)sluggish performance with some apps that are normally quite snappy, like Firefox, which seems to hang a lot loading pages, Keynote (saving is often painfully slow), and indeed, trying to copy a 250Mb file from the tower to the MacBook via Airport (having connected using CMD-K) said it was going to take 33 hrs, which I thought was a bit rich...
4d) hot-swapping a usb pin for a keyboard+optical mouse receiver from the tower to the MacBook sometimes causes something inexplicable to happen to the MacBook's keyboard: both the Caps and the NumLock LEDs come on, and the keyboard has jumped into some config other than what it is normally in (French). I have not been able to determine what the keyboard actually thinks it is when this occurs (3 times now). The command keys (ctrl, alt, cmd) do not appear to work at all. Rebooting corrects it.
All up, pretty irritating, and a huge time waster, as you can well imagine. I stuck a bit of a rant on the discussions the other day in a moment of intense frustration, which got zapped by the moderators (probably not unreasonably!), but not before someone replied suggesting that it might be bad RAM, hence my questions here.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(1266 ' 0.5 0.25 10 1000 15 5120 1000 25000 1 1 0 100 ' 51 25600 4 10 25 5120 102400 1000 25 1 250 40 500 300 85 25 20480 262144 20 2000     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I may not agree with them.

  • Can I run the hardware test when I have four different accounts on my mac 10.8.4, can I run the hardware test when I have four different accounts on my mac 10.8.4

Hi  Noticed that the top of my mac is nearly too hot to touch.  Did a search online and found out about the hardware test.  Looked up online user manual for my mac (Processor  3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 10.8.4) and noted how to perform the test.  However, when I keep my finger on the D button through start up it just brings me right to the screen where I have to sign in to my desktop account (there are four accounts on the desktop as it is a family mac).  Am I doing something wrong.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
First, you should know that it's normal that your iMac is hot at the top. Here are the fans, so it's normal that it's hotter than other parts. Before going further, download Temperature Monitor and tell us which temperatures it indicates > http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
If it gives dangerous temperatures, then you should run Apple Hardware Test. Looking at the processor the Mac has got, your Mac came with DVDs. Apple Hardware Test is in Mac OS X Install Disc, so insert it and hold the D key while your Mac is starting to start in Apple Hardware Test

  • Separate Apple Hardware Test DVD for MacBook Pro original??

Hey Folks, I'm trying to verify whether or not the MacBook Pro came with the Apple Hardware Test as a separate DVD disk. The "MacBook Pro" Install disk references it but I can't seem to find the software on that DVD. Any guesses out there would be appreciated. I'm about to perform an upgrade for Tiger to Leopard and wnat to give my laptop the "hairy eyeball" before I begin.
    Many Thanks,
    Peter

Insert the DVD and start up the computer with the D key held down. The Hardware Test is on a separate area of the DVD and isn't normally accessible.

  • What are the meanings of Apple Hardware Test error codes 4m0t/4/40000003:hdd-1300 and 4m0t/4/40000003:hdd-1308?

what are the meanings of Apple Hardware Test error codes 4m0t/4/40000003:hdd-1300 and 4m0t/4/40000003:hdd-1308?

Thanks - Even though I'm years out of warranty I got chat help from Apple (I said they should help me since the codes aren't published.)  We covered three different questions, and although I didn't get a specific decoding of the error code, I got confirmation of what other comments here imply - it might have helped that I indicated I'd already been here - and useful links to how to do back ups, including to CD(s). (I don't have a lot of data on this computer yet)
Now I need to figure out how to decide how hot-to-the-touch is "too hot" for the metal frame at the top of the iMac to decide whether I'm getting adequate fan performance or insufficient.  While chatting I initially reported it was cool at the bottom and warm at the top.  Apple hadn't asked, but their response prompted me to feel it again, and I'd say the top was hot, not warm - I updated but Apple didn't comment further except to conclude after addressing the other questions that I should take it in for further assessment - don't really want to bother with that.

  • Apple Hardware Test (AHT) Hard Drive Full Read Fail But SMART Status OK

I have a Mac mini Server from Mid 2010 running Snow Leopard Server.
Ocassionally, it'll freeze up with the spinning beachball wheel for a few minutes. This usually happens when opening an app or performing an app function from the menu bar. It's a pretty clean system—there are not many apps installed.
I suspect it's a hadrware issue. I ran Disk Utility's Permission and Disk Repair. All good. SMART Status is verified. So I ran the Apple Hardware Test. Everything passes except for the Hard Drive's "Full Read"—it fails because "Reading took longer than the average time". The Hard Drive "Short .. test" and "Check SMART Status" pass.
Does anyone have an idea of what's going on here? Is the hard drive the issue? I don't understand how there can be a read issue (or hard drive issue), when the SMART Status is verfied.

S.M.A.R.T isn't perfect. Neither is AHT for that matter, but if it is reporting that reading is taking longer than it should then an impending failure is likely. The occasional "wait cursor" appearance supports that diagnosis.
Consider yourself fortunate in that you still have the ability to back up anything important, and you can plan a convenient time for its replacement.

  • Hard drive issues; how to run hardware test

A couple of weeks ago my hard drive experienced what I would call "minor crashes". The computer booted up to the grey box with the question mark, and would do nothing more. The hard drive also made unpleasant noises. I think I got it back by resetting PRAM, but it happened a second time, and then a PRAM reset again got it back. Needless to say, I'm nervous about this drive.
I have Apple Care until January '09 (this is an '06 Intel machine) and figure I should try to move on figuring out what's up ASAP (both because I don't want a drive failure, and because I only have a few more months of Care).
I'm guessing that I should run the extended hardware test, but I can't seem to get it going using the Leopard disk I used to upgrade the OS. Do I need the original install disks (which I can't find, of course!)? What else can I do to determine if I have an issue that calls for hard drive replacement? If I need a new hard drive (it now seems small at 250gb anyhow), will I be able to do it myself (assuming Apple Care won't take care of it)?
    Any insights welcome. Thanks!

Give it a try, if not you'll need to dig up your Disk 1!
+Some Intel-based Macs ship with Apple Hardware Test and Mac OS X 10.4.x preinstalled on the hard drive. If an Erase and Install installation of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is performed using a retail Leopard installation disc, Apple Hardware Test will be erased and not reinstalled on these Macs.+
+If you're in this situation and need to use Apple Hardware Test, simply start from the DVD that came with your computer (not the Leopard installation disc) while holding the "D" key. Apple Hardware Test will run from the DVD.+
