Sluggish performance in Windows 8.1

I'm observing very sluggish performance in Firefox on my Surface Pro using Windows 8.1 RTM. I can't quite track down what's going on, but some startups take as much as 10-12 seconds. Additionally, the overall browser performance is sluggish.
I've tried running in Safe Mode and it's still quite slow.

Ok, tried running Nightly. Still seeing VERY poor performance.

  • Lion sluggish after installing Windows 7

I installed Win7 on my Mid 2012 iMac, i7 3.4Ghz 16gb RAM for a few programs that I needed on the windows platform. A few months later I removed the partition from my hard disk, but I am experiencing extremely sluggish performance on Lion. I've tried erasing the HD completely and reinstalling Lion, but it's still sluggish. By sluggish I mean I used to be able to play World of Warcraft on Ultra with no problems whatsoever, now I cant even play on the low setting. Scrolling up and down websites, even typing on the search bar of Chrome or Safari also becomes a pain because of the really slow performance. Any ideas as to what I should do? I've only experienced this problem after I've installed Win7.
What frustrates me the most is the fact that my early 2010 MBP runs WoW just fine on ultra... Please help!

Press and hold the "option" key when you boot your computer. Then select OSx.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Retina running 10.9.5 sluggish performance

My 13" Retina MBP 512GB/8GB RAM running 10.9.5 has been running very sluggish recently. Doesn't appear to be any obvious problems other than Adobe Flash crashes almost hourly while web browsing.  Here is my EtreCheck report:

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(1266 ' 0.5 0.25 10 1000 15 5120 1000 25000 1 1 0 100 ' 51 25600 4 10 25 5120 102400 1000 25 1 250 40 500 300 85 25 20480 262144 20 2000     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I may not agree with them.

  • Sluggish performance - Mac Mini and MBP?

I'm experiencing sluggish performance on my Mac Mini with Leopard (upgrade installation) when using the genie effect, expose, spaces, gadgets, 3d dock, etc. It's jerky, as if the animation is missing frames. Is it related to the graphics card? I also find my finder painfully slow opening folders.... Any other people experiencing this? Are there any solutions available?

Exactely the same here. I had to disable the 3D dock alltogether, admittedly not a big loss. Sluggishness seems to worsen with a 'complex' desktop picture (graphics card - texture issue?). Also, and most annoyingly, I find that text rendering seems to be much worse, e.g. look at the system menu with an all black or white desktop background. Or a SoulseeX window on top of some other (Carbon app with opacity set to 90% per default). This is a litte better if I set the display to a '2.2 Television gamma' (I have a 23" Cinema display). One thing that i will try is to boot back into 10.4 and see if it's just my imagination but I am pretty sure it's not.

  • How can I optimize my hard disk drive usage and performance in Windows 8 or Windows 7?

QuestionHow can I optimize my hard disk drive usage and performance in Windows 8 or Windows 7?
AnswerThere are a few simple steps you can take to ensure your hard disk drive is used optimally.
    Use Toshiba HDD Protection
Many Toshiba laptops come with a program called Toshiba HDD Protection pre-installed. This program helps to protect your hard disk drive from being damaged due to falls or impacts. By default, it should already be enabled. You might be tempted to lower the detection levels in this application, but doing so could cause your hard disk drive to be damaged. Remember that while the application can reduce the chance of damage, you should still avoid allowing the laptop to fall or suffer rapid impacts.
For more information on this utility, see the following article:

Windows 8 and Windows 7 optimize hard disk drives automatically through a process called defragmentation. Unless you've disabled this, you don't need to do anything. If you have disabled this and want to run the process, you can still do so.
In Windows 8, search for "Defrag" at the Windows Start screen and select "Defragment and optimize your drives."
In Windows 7, search for "Defrag" in the Start Menu's search field and select "Disk defragmenter."
You can use this tool to optimize your hard disk drives, allowing Windows to find needed files faster.
    Remove items from startup
Some applications run automatically when Windows starts. This can add additional functionality, but it also decreases the performance of your computer. Sometimes you might want to disable certain programs from starting automatically.
In Windows 8, search for "Task Manager" at the Start screen. Select the "Startup" tab. Select an application you'd like to disable from starting automatically and then click the "Disable" button in the lower-right.
In Windows 7, type "msconfig" in the Start Menu's search field and press ENTER. Uncheck the boxes next to applications you'd like to disable from starting automatically.
You should be sure of the purpose of an application before disabling it from starting automatically. Some applications might be important. If in doubt, you might consider searching on the Web to discover more information about a program. Remember that if you find that you disabled something vital, you can always re-enable it.

  • Safari - sluggish performance

Since upgrading to Leopard (on my MacBook Pro) Safari shows a very sluggish performance, page take over 10 seconds to load. I cleared the cache but the problem persists. Any ideas?

Have you guys ran REPAIR DISK PERMISSIONS? and Cleaned out the disk cache?
Have you tried to startup the computer and holding SHIFT down (old extensions off trick)?
See if problems persist after these things. Sometimes it's a 3rd party app or extension. I've seen these issues from all the freeware shareware stuff over the various versions of Mac OS X.

There may be other software that is causing your problem, but the Blackberry software regularly crops up as being the cause of slow-downs or unpredictable behaviour. Try uninstalling it using the uninstaller that is hopefully available from Blackberry.
Hopefully others will spot this thread and have some other suggestions. There are a few entries for things I've never heard of (not that that means much ), but there's a chance that they are not compatible with Mavericks and could be contributing to the sluggish performance.

  • Lr 5.4 sluggish performance

    Hello friends
My PC config is as follows:
    OS: Win 7 64bit
    CPU: Intel Core2Duo E4300 1.8GHz
    RAM: 5GB DDR2
    Graphics Card: ATi Radeon 4700 512MB DDR5
HDDs: 160GB, 250GB, 500GB (all SATA) and 80GB (IDE aka PATA)
    AV: Avast
    Firewall: Comodo
Lr installation: in a separate partition than the default "C:\"  of 160GB one (but on the same physical HDD).
I am trying this version of Lr, but I find the performance is extremely sluggish. Mainly the problem occurs whenever a real time rendering is required, for example showing the mask overlay, or the noise and sharpening preview (which can be viewed by pressing Alt key while changing the respective slider). I do not use any other software while working with Lr. Compared to the minimum system requirement of Lr, I believe my PC's config (though old) is quite adequate, still why do I get so sluggish performance? Is there any settings that I should change in Lr to get better performance?
    Please help me out.
    Thank you.

    Hi SRoyC,
Well, I'm somewhat outside my area of expertise at this point, since what I'm saying is based on:
    * reading
    * adding 2 (from what I've gathered in forums), + 2 (related experience).
In otherwords I have no direct experience with i7 processors m'self.
    But,
    * I've seen a lot of posts of cpu utilization showing <50% cpu utilization (running Lightroom I mean) on souped up systems, and so far none showing >50% - not for more than a "microsecond" anyway.
    and
I've read that even in gaming systems users are getting less bang from bucks out of money spent for cpus, past a certain point, these days..
In the old days, it was easy: operations were either bound by cpu or disk. Such is no longer the case, and I haven't kept up with modern CPU architecture well enough to understand or explain details, but you can't get much faster Lr performance by faster disk nor beefier cpus these days - there's some other bottle-neck(s)... - maybe somebody else understands better, but beware a lot of people talk like they know when they don't - they just know they know more than you do and have a good story line ...
So, my guess: i7 won't serve so much better than an i5 (or similarly priced AMD chip) that it would be worth sinking your money there even if it's tight, and so if i7 really expensive where you are, maybe money would be better spent elsewhere (or put in the bank..).. - just my guess... - may not even perform better at all, but as I said: I really dunno for sure...
To be clear: abnormally slow performance is almost always caused be some element in your system that is tripping up Lr (and when I say system: I mean it could be a byte in a data file too, as well as hardware/software..), and NOT due to system spec.
Often Adobe remedies by software changes, but still - until then you gotta trouble-shoot your system/files if you want it to run fast.
PS - I run an AMD Phenom II X4 965 (and SSDs for critical drives), and I get full core utilization (i.e. 100% utilization of all 4 cores, for short intervals anyway - most of the time <100%) and good performance - I've heard claims of faster performance, but I've also heard claims of a lot slower performance by people with beefier systems.
PPS - I just reviewed your current system and it is indeed under powered. I recommend at least 4 cores (6 would be better, dunno 'bout 8, for Lr purposes I mean), at least 3GHz (faster is generally better, but again: past a certain point the cpu will just be idle so no gain), at least 8GB RAM (12-16G if you can afford it, usually more ram than that won't help much if at all). If Lr not working optimally on such a system, then it's time to break out the trouble-shooting handbook...
To reiterate: I'm not sure if a 12-core, 5GHz system with 32GB ram would be significantly faster than a 6-core, 3.5GHz system with 12GB ram, maybe not any.
Also: most operations when Lr is lagging are not stressing the disk much (e.g. the time it takes Lr to read an entire raw file and/or catalog photo record is generally not the problem, so SSDs will help a little, but only a little - surprisingly little..). Granted, it depends on the operation - whole-catalog metadata consolidation: yes, but when editing a single photo in develop module - disk speed makes little difference (except a skosh when initially loading).
    ~R.

  • Performance Using Windows and Parallels?

We are getting new computers at work and are fighting to stay on the Mac, but we are running more and more Windows apps. How does performance of Windows apps under Parallels compare (relatively) to the old days of running Virtual PC? Seems to me that having an Intel processor would provide a big boost in performance, since you no longer have to emulate an Intel. I'm talking about RoboHelp, PowerPoint, and web-based applications, nothing too graphic or processor intensive.

Unless the Windows software you want to use is incredible CPU intensive, using Parallels or VMWare (or even the free VirtualBox) will probably suit you fine. I use PD and Win7 with a number of applications on a 2011 MBA. The ony time I notice any speed degredation is when Win7 is booting up or coming out of hibernation; once it is running there's no noticable performance hit. I can move back and forth between Windows and the Mac smoothly and the programs run fine. (There is, however a noticable hit on battery life because PD is a heavy CPU user.) BootCamp, because it allows you to run Windows natively, has no affect on the Mac because when you are running Windows in BootCamp you aren't running the Mac OS. With BootCamp you run one or the other at one time unlike PD which lets you run multiple OS versions at one time

  • Sluggish performance- hardware test?

How can I run a Hardware/performance test on my Mac pro 2008(early).
    2X3 GHz Quad-Core Xeon.
I am getting very sluggish performance from Motion and Avid programs.
Honestly I saw very little performance increase compared to my old Quad PPC.
I installed 16 gigs RAM from OWC.
ATI Radeon HD 4870 and a eSATA video RAID.
By all accounts this machine should be cooking- but it doesn't.
I ran DW on the Boot drive- but I still have issues.
I have read so much praise for the 2008's as great machines- so I just don't understand why I get so many hang ups.

Clone your drive (SuperDuper) so you have an exact backup image.
Question: did you migrate your apps from G5? It sounds like you did.
The nice thing about SuperDuper is it skips all the clutter (cache, temp, logs etc) and optimizes folder and free space.
Are you using drives from G5 that have not been reformatted?
I'm sure there are other things to look for under the hood.

  • "The task sequence has been suspended. LiteTouch is trying to install applications. This cannot be performed in Windows PE."

MDT 2012 Server is up and running. I mistakenly deleted a Task Sequence step called "Install Application" that I thought was not needed (I know I should have disabled it and tested).
I have a problem now, when I went to image a computer I did not get application list (This used to work before I deleted the above TS step) with items to check and uncheck for installation.  "Install Application" TS was readded but now when I try to

"The task sequence has been suspended. LiteTouch is trying to install applications. This cannot be performed in Windows PE."
I've tried moving it to different positions on the list (Higher and lower) to no avail, I always get the same error. Please advise.
    -Thanks in advance!

On the computer you are deploying to "the client", boot into WindowsPE just like you are going to image and before you authenticate or
get any dialogue boxes, press F8 in WindowsPE to get command prompt and type the following:
    diskpart
    list disk
    select disk 0
    list part
    select part 1
    clean
    create part primary
    assign

  • General Performance with Windows?

Im a seasoned mac fanatic, but since I got my G5 back in 04 I haven't been keeping up with the latest Mac News.
Basically I'm interested in getting a Mac Book Pro because I play mid-higher end gfx pc games on my Dell and I understand you can run Windows natively with hardware acceleration. Ive used Virtual PC and YUCK!
I have a Dell XPS Quad Core QX6700 that I've been using and its good, but from having a G5, G3, and the old Power Macs, a Quadra, Centris, etc.. I know Macs are faster when compared side by side.
Ok my question... How is performance under windows? Can I play these same games no problem? Virtual PC could barely run solitaire so I am a bit skeptical about the performance I hear. I wish Apple put a 1GB of video memory but the games I play can use 512 just fine.
    Thanks for the help!
    Chris

    Thank you for the star!
I have just noted some general advice on Boot Camp, with a Windows XP partition, which I also highly recommend.
First, you should read the Boot Camp manual carefully and follow it in detail.
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Boot_CampInstall-Setup.pdf
Second, you should format your Windows partition using the NTFS format. Fat 32 will not support files larger than 3.5 GB.
By having your partition formatted as NTFS, you will be able to upgrade to Windows 7 easily in the future should you wish to do so. I would recommend a minimum partition size of 40 GB.
To access your Mac hard drive from Windows, you would want to check out MacDrive 7, which is really good.
    http://www.mediafour.com
Under NTFS, you will be able to read your Windows drive from your Mac drive.
However, if you want to write to it, you will need the following software from Paragon.
    http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/
If you go with XP, and to save money, look for Microsoft OEM versions of Windows XP. These are the same as retail versions of Windows, but you will pay far less, i.e. $129 vs. $399.
However, do not go for manufacturer OEM copies of Windows, like from Dell or HP, as they will not work properly.
You can find the proper versions at CDW or Amazon.
    http://www.cdw.com
    Good luck!

  • Sluggish performance with OSX 10.9.2?

Since the automatic download of OSX 10.9.2, Cloud 2.0.1, and Tunes 11.1.5 on 26 Feb 2014, I have had prolonged periods of "sluggish" performance on my iMac; slow to open Safari and my home page, very slow sending of email and frequent need to re-enter "sites" to get to the location.
I have brief periods where operating my iMac is a "breeze;" instant connection to Safari and my home page, quick sending of email, and instant entry to web-sites I selected.
And, when I've tried to re-store my 5 and 5s iPhones on iTunes due to rapid battery depletion; I'm informed that "tones" that I've used on the iPhones previously cannot be "copied" to the iPhones.
    Any similiar problems? Suggestions?

No platter based hard drive will score above a 5.9 in the WEI, even if it is a RAID setup using 10,000 RPM drives. This is according to Microsoft. Run a disk benchmark tool on the drive and then compare those results to other similar drives online. In all likelyhood there is no issue with your system.
